Use a binary converter for routine base changes, but check what it accepts and how it formats the result. For data sizes, distinguish decimal units such as kB from binary units such as KiB; for consequential work, verify the factor and rounding against a standards reference.

What binary conversion does

Binary is base 2: each digit position represents a power of two. To convert a binary numeral to decimal, add the weights of the positions containing 1. For example, 1010₂ means 1×8 + 0×4 + 1×2 + 0×1, which equals 10₁₀.

For binary-to-hexadecimal conversion, group the bits into four-bit chunks from the right. The binary value 1010₂ is one nibble and corresponds to A₁₆. If the leftmost group is short, leading zeroes may be added to complete it; they change the written width, not the value.

How to choose and use a converter

For a quick check, choose a browser-based converter that explicitly supports the bases and units you need. Before trusting an output, inspect its input rules, displayed precision, and handling of signs and leading zeroes. A converter may show the answer without showing the factor or intermediate calculation, making independent checking harder.

AstroAI Digital Multimeter Tester 2000 Counts with DC AC Voltmeter and Ohm Volt Amp Meter; Measures Voltage, Current, Resistance, Continuity and Diode, Blue
  • Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.
  • Versatile Digital Multimeter - Accurately measures AC/DC Voltage, DC Current, Resistance, and Diode. This Multimeter is a really useful tool for solving industrial and household electrical issues. Suitable for Household Outlets, Fuses, Batteries (including Vehicles), Automotive Circuit Troubleshooting, Charging Systems, Testing electronics in Cars etc.
  • Troubleshooting with Accuracy - This Multimeter has a sampling speed of 2 times per second; Built-in a backlight LCD display with 3 ½ digits (1999 count) 0.6”, and high polarity including negative and positive readings.
  • Ensures Safety - Double fuse is anti-burn and protects from overloading. The silicone cover can protect the multimeter from failing damage and prevent electric shocks. And low battery indication will be displayed when battery power is low.
  • Ease of Use - Support Data Hold and Continuity Buzzer. Includes Convenient feature like LCD Backlit Screen makes it easy to use in dimly light areas. Batteries/Set of Test Leads/User Manual are Included.
  1. Identify the quantity and starting unit. A numeral such as 1010₂ is a base-conversion problem; a storage amount such as 10 MB is a unit-conversion problem.
  2. Choose the desired output format. Confirm the base or unit label, including capitalization such as b for bit and B for byte.
  3. Enter the value and inspect validation. Check whether the tool accepts the digits and any sign or leading zeroes in your input.
  4. Review the result and method. Look for the conversion factor, intermediate steps, and rounding controls. If these are hidden, verify the result separately.
  5. Check whether the result is plausible. For consequential calculations, confirm factors and rounding using NIST SP 811 or IEEE/ASTM SI 10.

BinaryConverter.org describes multiple conversion modes and says its text conversion runs in the browser; that is the site’s own feature claim, not independently verified behavior. Avoid entering sensitive text into an online tool unless you have confirmed how it handles data.

Keep binary and decimal data units separate

SI prefixes use powers of 10, while IEC binary prefixes use powers of 2. NIST distinguishes them explicitly: use the “i” in KiB or MiB when the binary multiplier is intended.

kB 1,000 10³
KiB 1,024 2¹⁰
MB 1,000,000 10⁶
MiB 1,048,576 2²⁰

The IEC binary prefix sequence continues with Gi (2³⁰), Ti (2⁴⁰), Pi (2⁵⁰), and Ei (2⁶⁰). Do not infer that a value labeled GB uses the same multiplier as GiB.

Check bits, bytes, and rates

A byte (B) is 8 bits (b). Keep the units attached to values: network rates are commonly expressed in bits per second, while file or memory capacities are commonly expressed in bytes. Mixing them without accounting for the factor of eight can produce a substantially wrong estimate. Also check whether the prefix is decimal or binary.

Use a reliable conversion process

NIST’s conversion guidance is useful beyond binary arithmetic: identify the starting and target units, choose appropriate factors, cancel units, calculate, check that the result makes sense, and round only the final result. Exact factors should be used where available. Factors and rounding conventions deserve particular scrutiny in trade, commerce, specifications, and other critical applications.

A browser converter is convenient for routine work, not proof that its result is suitable for a critical application. Verify the factor and rounding independently against an authoritative reference such as NIST SP 811 or IEEE/ASTM SI 10. NIST’s guidance on conversion software emphasizes checking factors and rounding for critical uses: NIST unit-conversion software guidance.

Base conversion is not text encoding

Changing a numeral from binary to decimal or hexadecimal changes how the same numeric value is written. Encoding text is a different operation: a character is represented by one or more bytes under an encoding scheme. ASCII and UTF-8 are character encodings; Unicode defines a broader character repertoire and related encoding forms. A text-conversion tool may show bytes for text, but that is not the same as converting a number between bases.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does binary code represent both numbers and text characters?

Binary digits can represent numeric values directly through powers of two. Text is represented by encoding characters as bytes; the byte sequence depends on the character encoding. These are related uses of bits, but numeric base conversion and text encoding are different tasks.

What is the difference between ASCII, UTF-8, and Unicode binary encoding?

ASCII is a character encoding with a limited character set. UTF-8 is a variable-length encoding for Unicode characters. Unicode defines a much broader character repertoire; it is not itself simply another name for a binary numeral system.
