Use Binance Last Price to see the latest futures trade, Index Price to judge the underlying spot-market level, and Mark Price to manage unrealized profit and loss (PnL) and liquidation risk. Binance states that a position is liquidated when Mark Price reaches its liquidation price, so Mark Price is the operational risk reference. Last Price explains execution and realized PnL, while Index Price shows the fair-value anchor used to calculate Mark Price.
At a glance: which Binance price matters for each task?
| Task | Primary reference | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Check where the latest futures trade printed | Last Price | It is the most recent executed contract trade. |
| Understand the underlying spot-market level | Index Price | It is a weighted reference built from spot prices on major exchanges. |
| Track unrealized PnL or distance to liquidation | Mark Price | Binance uses Mark Price for unrealized PnL and liquidation calculations. |
| Investigate a wick or a price discrepancy | Compare all three | A futures trade can temporarily diverge from both the weighted index and the smoothed mark. |
| Build a risk dashboard or alert | Mark Price plus Index Price, with Last Price for execution context | Binance exposes all three values and funding data through its APIs. |
These prices answer different questions; none is a universal replacement for the others. A chart may emphasize Last Price, your position panel may show Mark Price, and the index may reveal whether a move is broad across spot markets or isolated to the futures order book.
What Last Price means on Binance Futures
Last Price is the latest transaction price at which the futures contract traded. Binance describes it as the last trade in the contract’s trading history and says it is used for calculating realized PnL (Binance Support, Futures Liquidation Protocols, updated January 4, 2026).

What Last Price is good for
- Execution review: Compare your fills with the current Last Price to evaluate slippage and the price at which the market actually traded.
- Realized PnL context: When a trade closes, the executed prices—not a theoretical spot reference—determine the transaction result, fees aside.
- Reading the futures order book: A sudden Last Price move shows where buyers and sellers matched on that contract.
- Chart interpretation: If your chart is configured to display contract trades, a wick is usually a record of Last Price prints.
Why Last Price can be misleading for risk
Last Price can move sharply when liquidity is thin or a large order crosses the book. It may briefly sit above or below the spot-derived reference without representing a durable change in the underlying asset. That makes it useful for execution analysis but unsuitable as the sole liquidation gauge. A dramatic Last Price wick does not itself trigger liquidation if Mark Price has not reached the position’s liquidation threshold.

What Index Price means
Binance’s Price Index is a weighted average of the underlying asset’s spot prices across major exchanges. Binance says you can consider the Price Index the spot price (Binance Support, Mark Price and Price Index in USDⓈ-Margined Futures, updated October 5, 2026).
How the index is built
Each constituent exchange contributes a weighted spot quote. Binance can set an exchange’s weight to zero when its data is stale. A source that deviates by more than 3% from the median can be capped under the documented protection rules. Binance also reserves the right to change index constituents without prior notice, so the exact basket is not a permanent contract specification.
What Index Price tells you
- If Last Price and Index Price move together, the futures move is broadly consistent with spot markets.
- If Last Price moves while Index Price is steady, the contract may be experiencing a local order-book imbalance, spread expansion or a transient wick.
- If Index Price moves first, the underlying spot market is signalling a broader move that futures may follow.
Index Price is a reference, not a tradeable quote. You cannot assume that an order will fill at the index or that every exchange in the basket has the same price at every instant.
What Mark Price means
Mark Price is Binance’s calculated fair-value estimate for a futures contract. Binance says it is a better estimate of a contract’s true value than a perpetual-futures transaction price because it is less volatile in the short term. It is not simply the spot price: Index Price is the spot-like reference, while Mark Price combines that reference with funding and basis information.

Why Binance uses Mark Price
Using the most recent trade for margin events could let an isolated print create an unfair liquidation. Mark Price is designed to reduce the effect of short-lived manipulation and noisy order-book moves while still tracking the underlying market. It can nevertheless move quickly during a genuine, broad market shock.
How Binance calculates Mark Price
USDⓈ-M perpetual contracts
For USDⓈ-M perpetual contracts, Binance documents a median of three values:
- Contract price: the futures market price used by the calculation.
- Price 1: Index Price × (1 + Last Funding Rate × time until the next funding payment ÷ funding period).
- Price 2: Index Price plus a 30-second moving-average basis.
The Mark Price is the median of those three values. The funding-adjusted term links the perpetual contract to its expected funding payment, while the moving-average basis smooths a temporary premium or discount.

Do not apply that formula to every Binance contract
Binance states that the exact methodology differs for COIN-M and other contract types. Its documentation also lists futures Last Price, bid1 and ask1 data, funding rate and composite spot prices among Mark Price inputs. Treat the USDⓈ-M perpetual formula as a documented example for that contract family, not as a universal rule for every futures product.

Why the three prices diverge
Normal futures premium or discount
Perpetual contracts can trade at a premium when long demand is strong or at a discount when sellers dominate. Last Price reflects that immediate imbalance. Mark Price tempers it with the index, funding and basis inputs, so it may sit between Last Price and Index Price.
Thin liquidity and isolated trades
A large market order can push Last Price through several order-book levels. Index Price may barely change because the constituent spot markets remain stable, and Mark Price may move less than the contract trade.
Broad spot-market movement
When the underlying asset moves across the spot venues in the index, Index Price changes. Mark Price generally follows because its calculation is anchored to the index; Last Price may lead or lag depending on futures liquidity.

Binance can remove a stale constituent’s weight, cap a source that deviates by more than 3% from the median, and temporarily use the contract’s latest transaction price within a limit through its Last Price Protected mechanism when stable reference data is unavailable. These safeguards mean the relationship between the three values can change during an outage or abnormal feed.

Liquidation, margin and PnL: the price that actually counts
Binance’s liquidation rule is explicit: liquidation occurs when Mark Price hits the liquidation price of a position (Binance Support, Futures Liquidation Protocols, updated January 4, 2026). Monitor Mark Price and the liquidation price shown in your position panel rather than waiting for Last Price to reach the same level.
Unrealized versus realized PnL
- Unrealized PnL: Binance calculates the open position’s floating result from Mark Price. It changes as the mark changes, even when no trade is executed.
- Realized PnL: Closing fills determine the realized result, so Last Price and your actual execution prices provide the relevant context.
Why the displayed liquidation price can change
The liquidation estimate depends on position size, leverage, margin, maintenance-margin requirements and the current mark. Binance warns that Mark Price is not linear in volatile markets; the liquidation price recorded in history can therefore differ from an earlier estimate displayed before the move. Use the live value as a moving threshold, not as a guaranteed fixed number.
What a Last Price wick means for a position
A wick visible only in Last Price is not, by itself, proof that your position should have been liquidated. Check whether Mark Price reached the liquidation price at that moment. Conversely, do not assume every wick is harmless: a fast, legitimate market move can carry Mark Price to the threshold within seconds.

The correct trigger depends on what you are trying to control. A stop based on Last Price reacts to the tradeable futures market and can exit on a brief contract dislocation. A stop based on Mark Price aligns more closely with the margin metric that can liquidate the position. Binance’s interface and order types can expose different trigger choices by contract and setting, so verify the trigger label shown in the order ticket before submitting.

Use Last Price when execution displacement is the risk
- You are trading a short-term breakout and want the stop to respond to an actual contract print.
- You accept that a one-off wick can trigger an exit before spot markets confirm the move.
- You are managing slippage or a spread trade whose edge depends on the futures quote itself.
Use Mark Price when liquidation distance is the risk
- You want the alert to warn as the exchange’s liquidation metric approaches your threshold.
- You are monitoring a leveraged position through volatile periods and want to filter some isolated Last Price noise.
- You are sizing margin buffers and need the same reference used for unrealized PnL.
Regardless of trigger choice, place a separate alert below the displayed liquidation price. A stop order is not a guarantee of execution at its trigger: in a fast market it can fill at a worse price or fail under exceptional trading conditions.

- Display all three values: Keep Last Price, Mark Price and Index Price visible for the contract you hold.
- Calculate the mark-index spread: Mark Price minus Index Price shows the contract’s fair-value premium or discount after Binance’s smoothing and funding inputs.
- Watch funding context: Record the current funding rate and time until the next funding event; these are inputs to the USDⓈ-M perpetual mark calculation.
- Set two alerts: Use one around your strategy’s stop level and another when Mark Price approaches liquidation.
- Investigate divergences: If Last Price moves alone, inspect liquidity and recent trades. If Index Price also moves, treat the event as a broader market move.
- Recheck after feed incidents: During an index-source interruption, review Binance’s current contract documentation and status information because constituent weights and fallback behaviour can affect the relationship.
Using Binance APIs for a live panel
REST premium-index data
Binance’s USDⓈ-M premium-index response example includes markPrice, indexPrice, estimatedSettlePrice, lastFundingRate, interestRate, nextFundingTime and a timestamp. A monitoring service can poll this endpoint, store timestamped observations, calculate the mark-index spread and compare Mark Price with the liquidation price obtained from your position data.
WebSocket mark-price stream
The documented USDⓈ-M mark-price stream supplies Mark Price, Index Price, estimated settlement price, funding rate and next funding time. Binance documents update options of every 3 seconds or every 1 second. Use the 1-second option when you need tighter alerts and can handle the additional message rate; 3-second updates are usually sufficient for a dashboard.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Operational safeguards for API users
- Use the event timestamp to detect stale data instead of treating a silent connection as a stable price.
- Reconnect and backfill after a WebSocket gap so an alert does not miss a rapid mark move.
- Keep contract type and symbol metadata with each record; COIN-M and other products can use different mark methodologies.
- Do not hard-code index constituents or assume the documented fields will never change. Binance notes that constituents and API details are subject to change.
Worked scenarios
Scenario 1: A one-minute futures wick
Last Price drops sharply, then returns, while Index Price barely changes. Mark Price moves only modestly and never reaches the liquidation threshold. The event is primarily a futures-market liquidity shock. Review your Last Price stop policy and fill history, but do not label it a liquidation trigger without confirming Mark Price.
Scenario 2: Spot-led sell-off
Index Price falls across its weighted spot sources. Mark Price follows, and Last Price trades around the declining mark. Because the move is reflected in the underlying reference, leveraged positions face genuine margin risk even if no isolated wick appears.
Scenario 3: Futures premium before funding
Last Price trades above Index Price as the next funding time approaches. The funding-adjusted component and moving-average basis can lift Mark Price, but the median calculation may keep it below the latest trade. Track the mark-index spread and funding data rather than assuming the entire premium will become unrealized profit.
Common mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Better practice |
|---|---|---|
| Calling Mark Price the spot price | It hides the funding and basis components and can misread a premium. | Call Index Price the spot-like reference and Mark Price the calculated fair-value estimate. |
| Assuming a chart wick always means liquidation | The chart may show Last Price while liquidation uses Mark Price. | Compare the wick with Mark Price and the liquidation price at the same time. |
| Applying the USDⓈ-M formula to COIN-M contracts | Contract families have different methodologies. | Check the method for the exact contract you trade. |
| Ignoring funding and time to funding | Funding is an input to the documented USDⓈ-M perpetual mark calculation. | Display funding rate and next funding time beside the prices. |
| Hard-coding today’s index basket | Binance may change constituents and weights without prior notice. | Use current exchange metadata and design for changes. |
| Treating a displayed liquidation price as fixed | Volatility and non-linear mark behaviour can change the estimate. | Keep a live Mark Price alert and maintain extra margin. |
Bottom line for traders
Think of the three values as three lenses on one futures market. Last Price answers, “Where did the contract just trade?” Index Price answers, “What is the underlying spot market worth?” Mark Price answers, “What value is Binance using for my open risk?” Use Last Price for execution analysis, Index Price for fair-value context, and Mark Price for unrealized PnL, liquidation monitoring and risk alerts. When prices disagree, compare all three before deciding whether you are seeing a real market move, a futures dislocation or a protected reference-feed event.
