Billy Evans is publicly identified as Elizabeth Holmes’s longtime partner or fiancé and the father of their two children. Although the film’s promotional wording and some headlines call him Holmes’s “husband,” ABC and A&E accounts do not document a wedding date or marriage certificate. Evans is featured prominently in Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary You Can See Everything, which follows the family before and during Holmes’s imprisonment.

Who is Billy Evans?

Evans comes from the San Diego family behind Evans Hotels. A&E reports that his grandparents, William and Anne Evans, founded the hotel group in 1953. The company’s family connection is the clearest publicly reported part of his background; the documentary and related interviews focus more on his relationship with Holmes and his role in giving filmmakers access to their family life.

Evans studied economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2010 through 2015, earning a Bachelor of Science. A&E also reports that he studied Chinese language and literature and spent time at Fudan University. His work history has included companies such as Luminar Technologies.

Are Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans married?

The most supportable description is that Evans is Holmes’s longtime partner or fiancé. ABC and A&E use those terms, while the available reporting does not verify a marriage date, legal filing or certificate. Calling him her “husband” without that documentation would turn an unconfirmed label into a fact.

Holmes and Evans became parents while Holmes’s Theranos criminal case was still unfolding. Evans has also been the family member speaking publicly about the children’s contact with Holmes during her sentence.

How many children do Holmes and Evans have?

They have two children:

Child Reported details
William Holmes Evans A&E reports that their son was born in July 2021.
Invicta A&E reports that their daughter was born in early 2023, a few months before Holmes entered federal prison.

ABC reported in October 2026 that Evans described the children as a 5-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter who visit Holmes weekly. He said he answers honestly when they ask difficult questions, adjusting the explanation to what they can understand.

What role does Evans play in You Can See Everything?

The documentary begins 34 days before Holmes reported to federal prison in May 2023. According to the Associated Press, Holmes and Evans welcomed the filmmakers into their beachside cottage in Del Mar, California. Director Nathan Fielder eventually stayed with the family for about 20 days. Filming then continued secretly over roughly three years, with Evans and Holmes remaining part of the project through 2025.

Evans’s participation supplied the filmmakers with unusually close access to Holmes’s home life, parenting and preparation for incarceration. It also makes him more than a background subject: he is the partner managing family routines while Holmes serves an 11-year federal sentence, and a central voice in the decision to let cameras observe that process.

Why did Evans agree to be filmed?

In an interview with David Friedberg on the All-In Podcast, Evans explained the idea this way: “So the whole idea was here she is. See her and make up your own mind.” He also acknowledged uncertainty about the finished film, saying, “Well, I haven’t seen it yet. I mean, I might think this is like the dumbest thing I’ve ever done.” Those comments suggest that Evans viewed the project as a chance for audiences to encounter Holmes directly rather than rely only on the Theranos scandal’s established narrative.

What did Nathan Fielder say about meeting Holmes?

Fielder told the Associated Press, “I am still struggling to this day to understand what I went through.” Variety reported that before meeting Holmes through A24, Fielder had read John Carreyrou’s 2018 book Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup. Variety quoted Fielder describing the tension he felt around Holmes: “When I met her, I remember having this weird experience where she seems so genuine at times. But then I’m like, ‘no,’ and clocking and tracking my thoughts and being like, ‘Okay, I know she’s a liar.’”

That uncertainty is part of the film’s premise. Rather than presenting Evans or Holmes as a simple rehabilitation story, the documentary places viewers inside the family’s situation and leaves them to judge what they see.
