Choose Big Walk if your group wants open-ended online exploration, communication-based puzzles, crossplay, and room for 2–12 players. Choose It Takes Two if exactly two people want a tightly directed, story-led adventure that continually switches between platforming, puzzles, and action. They are both cooperative adventures, but they serve very different kinds of sessions.

The short answer

Big Walk and It Takes Two share a basic promise: progress depends on people cooperating rather than simply fighting through a game alone. The similarity largely ends there. It Takes Two is a two-player campaign with authored scenes, a clear route forward, and frequent changes in mechanics. Big Walk is an online-only social adventure in which exploring, communicating, and improvising with a group are the main activities.

Question Big Walk It Takes Two
How many players? 2–12 players online Exactly two players
Solo play No meaningful single-player mode No single-player mode

Online play Required for meaningful progression; crossplay supported Online co-op supported
Best match Friends who want a larger online group and freedom to wander Two people who want a focused campaign with story beats

If you are buying for a couple, ask whether you want a shared story with a beginning, middle, and end that is designed around two roles. If so, It Takes Two is the safer choice. If you are organizing a regular online group, or you enjoy games where talking and experimenting are the point, Big Walk is the better fit.

That structure does not make it a conventional open-world action game. The emphasis is on being together in a shared space and figuring out what to do through observation and conversation. You can wander, test an idea, signal to a distant teammate, or stop to socialize without following a strict mission chain. The same group can return over multiple sessions, which suits a game night that continues across several evenings rather than a single sitting.

Online groups, not matchmaking

Big Walk has no random matchmaking. You need people you know or a group you organize yourself, and the game is designed around that continuing group relationship. It also has no meaningful solo mode, so it is not a purchase for someone who expects to explore alone and occasionally invite others.

Crossplay lets players on the supported platforms join the same group. A mixed Windows, Mac, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 group is therefore possible, subject to each player having the game and a suitable online connection. The game is online-only for meaningful progression, and same-screen couch co-op is not available.

Communication is a game mechanic

House House says the game is “entirely about teamwork and talking.” Voice and text are intentionally affected by distance and obstacles. A teammate may fade from hearing range, echo through a corridor, or become muffled behind a wall. Text chat follows the same distance and obstruction rules instead of acting like a universal, always-visible message window.

That design changes how you solve problems. You may need to describe a landmark to someone who cannot see you, find a way to get within speaking range, or use a tool when a wall or a long gap separates the group. The game’s communication limits are not a minor audio setting; they are part of the challenge.

Tools for groups that are not standing together

The multiplayer toolkit includes:

  • Proximity voice chat and distance-aware text chat
  • Gestures for nonverbal signaling
  • Walkie-talkies for communicating across greater distances
  • Laser pointers for indicating a location or object
  • Binoculars for scouting
  • Megaphones for projecting a message
  • Flares for drawing attention
  • Whiteboards for leaving visible instructions or diagrams

These tools make the group’s communication style part of the experience. A quiet pair can use pointers, boards, and gestures; a loud group may coordinate almost entirely through voice; a group spread across a large area may establish its own system of walkie-talkies and landmarks. The game rewards clarity, patience, and experimentation more than fast individual reactions.

What It Takes Two is actually built to do

It Takes Two is an action-adventure and platform game designed exclusively for two players. It has no single-player mode, but it supports both local and online co-op. Its campaign is directed: players move through authored story beats, encounter designed set pieces, solve puzzles that require both characters, and regularly receive new abilities or activities.

The two-player limit is fundamental rather than incidental. Challenges can be tuned around two people, and each player’s actions are usually legible: one character creates an opportunity while the other uses it, or both perform complementary actions in sequence. The result is a more controlled pace than Big Walk. You generally know what the game is asking you to attempt, even when the exact solution still requires teamwork.

A campaign for a pair

For two people who want a shared adventure with momentum, It Takes Two is the clearer match. It supplies a route, a story, and a succession of mechanics rather than asking the group to create its own agenda. That makes it easier to schedule: two players can start a session, continue the campaign, and stop at a natural point without coordinating a larger party.

It is also a better choice when the appeal is seeing what the designers have authored. The game’s platforming, puzzle-solving, and action sequences are arranged as a sequence of deliberate scenes. You are not choosing between a dozen possible activities in a large social space; you are cooperating through the next designed encounter.

Is Big Walk like It Takes Two?

Only at the broadest level. Both games require cooperation, and neither offers a meaningful solo campaign. Both can give two friends a reason to talk, coordinate, and celebrate a solution together. Their moment-to-moment expectations are different.

Dimension Big Walk It Takes Two
Primary activity Wandering, discovering, socializing, and solving communication-driven problems Following a directed campaign through platforming, puzzles, and action
Party scale Designed for 2–12 online players Designed for exactly two players
How progress is found Conversation, observation, experimentation, and group coordination Reading the current encounter and combining the two players’ abilities
Pacing Self-directed and suitable for multi-session groups Structured around authored scenes and a continuous campaign
Communication Distance, walls, voice, and text are intentionally simulated Communication supports conventional co-op rather than serving as the central puzzle system
Physical setup Players are expected to be in separate locations online Can be played locally on one screen or online

So, “Is Big Walk another It Takes Two?” is the wrong purchasing test. If you want a two-player story game, start with It Takes Two. If you want a social online world in which the group’s conversations are themselves part of play, start with Big Walk.

Which game is better for two players?

Pick It Takes Two when the pair wants structure

  • You want a directed campaign instead of an open-ended space.
  • You prefer frequent platforming, puzzle, and action changes.
  • You want the game to provide the next objective and set piece.
  • You are playing with one specific partner and do not need a larger party.
  • You want the option of local same-screen co-op.

For a couple, siblings, or two friends arranging regular sessions, the two-player design removes a common scheduling problem: nobody else has to be available. The campaign can be treated as a joint project with a shared pace and a clear sense of completion.

Pick Big Walk when two players want a social sandbox

  • You enjoy exploring without being pushed immediately toward the next story beat.
  • You like using voice, text, gestures, and unusual tools to solve problems.
  • You want the option to invite more people later, up to 12 online.
  • You are comfortable with a game whose fun depends on the group’s conversation and initiative.
  • Both players will be online from separate locations.

Two people can play Big Walk, but the experience is not simply a smaller version of It Takes Two. With only two players, there are fewer voices and fewer simultaneous experiments, yet the distance-based communication systems still matter. Choose it because you want that kind of interaction, not because you expect a conventional two-character campaign.

Which game is better for a larger group?

Big Walk is the only choice of these two for three or more players. Its stated range is two to 12 online participants, and its tools are designed to help a group spread out, regroup, and communicate through obstacles. It is a natural fit for a friend group that cannot always get everyone online at once, provided the people playing are willing to organize sessions without random matchmaking.

It Takes Two remains strictly a two-player experience. A third person cannot join the campaign, and there is no larger-party mode to switch on. If your household or friend group normally plays in rotating groups, that restriction should be part of the decision before anyone buys it.

For families

For a parent and child, siblings, or two relatives who will usually play in the same room, It Takes Two has the practical advantage because local co-op is supported. Big Walk requires an online setup and does not support same-screen couch co-op, so two people in front of one console or computer cannot use it as a split-screen-style activity.

For a family spread across different homes, Big Walk can accommodate a wider range of participants and lets the group communicate through more than a standard voice channel. The trade-off is that everyone must be comfortable with the game’s online requirements and with communication being affected by distance and walls.

Can Big Walk be played couch co-op?

No. Big Walk does not support same-screen couch co-op. Its intended setup is online play with people in separate locations, using in-game voice or text and the communication tools available in the world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A local pair should choose It Takes Two if playing on one screen is essential. A pair sitting together could still play Big Walk through separate online devices, but that is a workaround rather than couch co-op and requires each player to have access to a supported system and the game.

How Big Walk’s communication systems change the experience

Distance creates information gaps

In a conventional co-op game, a teammate’s voice is usually equally clear whether they are beside you or on the other side of the level. Big Walk intentionally removes that certainty. A player who walks ahead may become hard to hear; a corridor can create an echo; a wall can muffle a message. Text is subject to the same idea, so typing does not automatically eliminate the need to move closer or find another way to signal.

This creates a different kind of teamwork. The group has to decide who scouts, who waits, and how to report what was found. Miscommunication can be funny, but it can also cost time. A group that treats every puzzle as a race may find the communication limits frustrating; a group that enjoys role-playing a field team or inventing its own callouts is more likely to appreciate them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Physical tools make coordination visible

Laser pointers, binoculars, flares, megaphones, whiteboards, walkie-talkies, and gestures give players alternatives to repeating the same spoken instruction. A whiteboard can preserve a diagram after the original speaker leaves. A flare can draw attention when nobody is close enough to hear. Binoculars allow one player to scout while another remains at an objective.

The important distinction is that these tools support social problem-solving; they are not a replacement for it. The game does not turn the group into a set of interchangeable avatars with identical abilities. The players decide how to divide information, how much detail to communicate, and when to regroup.

Campaign length, pacing, and replay expectations

Big Walk: a continuing group activity

The official descriptions present Big Walk as a long-form cooperative adventure with a hand-crafted beginning, middle, and end. It is meant to be played start-to-finish with a group of friends, often across multiple sessions. That wording suggests a campaign with a planned conclusion, but the route between those points is intended to feel exploratory rather than like a sequence of tightly bounded levels.

Its replay value is likely to come from the people you play with and the solutions your group invents. A second group may communicate differently, split up at different times, or discover a different way to use the available tools. It is therefore a poor choice if you need a predictable, solo-friendly progression path and a good choice if the shared stories created during play are part of the appeal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It Takes Two: a directed cooperative campaign

It Takes Two is organized around authored story beats and frequent mechanical changes. The designers can tune each section for two players, introduce a new form of platforming or puzzle interaction, and then move the pair into an action set piece. That structure gives the campaign a stronger sense of forward momentum and makes it easier to recommend to players who want to see a complete, curated adventure.

Because the two games derive variety differently, they also differ in how they handle a player who is unsure what to do. It Takes Two generally communicates the current encounter through its level design and objectives. Big Walk expects players to look, talk, test tools, and decide together what is worth investigating.

Accessibility and comfort features in Big Walk

House House’s FAQ lists several options intended to make Big Walk more adaptable:

  • Control rebinding
  • Multiple crosshair styles
  • Hold or toggle control options
  • Field-of-view adjustment on PC and Mac
  • Motion-reduction overlays
  • Text chat
  • Interactive-item highlighting
  • The ability to skip any challenge that may be inaccessible

The skip option is particularly relevant in a game where progression is cooperative. A group does not have to abandon its campaign because one challenge is inaccessible to a participant. The online-only format still imposes practical requirements: each player needs a supported device, an online connection, and a way to communicate or read the group’s messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because proximity audio and text are intentional mechanics, players who cannot rely on voice should test the text-chat experience early. The text channel also respects distance and obstructions, so it is not equivalent to an always-on external chat service. That limitation is part of the design and should be considered when deciding whether the game’s communication model suits everyone in the group.

Price and purchase context

The Steam listing showed Big Walk at $19.99 at the time of the supplied pricing check. That is a recorded storefront price, not a permanent price promise; regional pricing, taxes, discounts, and later changes can alter the amount you see. The game also has a verified digital listing for Nintendo Switch 2, while the official FAQ lists PlayStation 5, Windows, and Mac availability as well.

The comparison material establishes It Takes Two as a purchase-oriented comparison title but does not provide a current price, edition breakdown, or complete platform list. Check the store for your region and platform before budgeting for a two-player session. For either game, the cost of additional hardware, separate online accounts, or a second copy may matter more than the base price, especially when a group is spread across different devices.

A decision checklist

Use these questions before choosing:

  1. How many people will actually play? Choose It Takes Two only when the plan is exactly two players. Choose Big Walk for a group of two to 12.
  2. Will everyone play online from separate locations? That is required for meaningful Big Walk progression. If you need one-screen local play, choose It Takes Two.
  3. Do you want a story route or a social space? Select It Takes Two for authored scenes and a directed campaign; select Big Walk for wandering and self-directed investigation.
  4. Is communication itself part of the fun? If yes, Big Walk makes distance, walls, voice, text, and signaling tools central. If you simply need to coordinate conventional co-op actions, It Takes Two is more straightforward.
  5. Can the group organize without random matchmaking? Big Walk expects a known group and does not provide random matchmaking.
  6. Does anyone need accessibility accommodations? Review Big Walk’s rebinding, hold/toggle, field-of-view, motion-reduction, highlighting, text-chat, and challenge-skip options before scheduling the campaign.

Final recommendation

Big Walk is the right co-op adventure for a recurring online group that wants to roam, talk, signal, and solve problems in its own way. Its 2–12-player range, crossplay, communication tools, and distance-aware voice and text make the group itself the main source of variety.
