A Ray-Ban Meta owner alleged on October 13, 2026, that three pairs of glasses recorded conversations and created audio-history entries without deliberate activation. The report says the “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” option was turned off. It has not been independently verified, does not show whether audio was sent to Meta, and does not establish that other owners are affected.
What the owner says happened
In a Reddit post, the owner wrote that the Meta AI app saved audio recordings and text transcripts of conversations in conversation history. They said the behavior appeared after a recent firmware update and was observed on three pairs, including second- and third-generation models.
Those details are firsthand claims, not a confirmed product defect. The poster also said they could not determine whether the issue affects all owners or whether the recordings were transmitted to Meta. No independently verified rate of unintended recording is available.
What Ray-Ban documents as normal behavior
The optional follow-up microphone window
Ray-Ban’s current US FAQ says “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” is enabled by default. When it is on, the glasses keep the microphone active briefly after a voice request so the wearer can continue speaking without repeating the wake phrase. The microphone should turn off automatically after a few seconds if there is no additional request.

The same FAQ says the notification LED indicates when audio is being processed during that follow-up period. Ray-Ban also states: “To protect your privacy, if we detect speech not intended for your glasses, your glasses will not react.” That is the manufacturer’s description of intended behavior, not an independent test of every device or firmware version.
How to switch the setting off
The setting can be changed in the Meta AI app under Meta AI settings or the selected glasses’ “Hey Meta” preferences. Turning it off should remove the documented post-request follow-up mode; it does not, by itself, explain the Reddit poster’s claim that audio entries appeared while the option was off.

Why the camera light does not answer the audio question
Meta’s July 2026 privacy explainer discusses the white capture LED used for photos and videos. It says the light signals content being captured for the gallery and that gallery captures remain stored privately on the glasses unless the wearer chooses to share them.
That explanation concerns camera media. It does not establish how microphone recordings or conversation-history entries are stored, whether they are uploaded, or whether an LED would appear during the alleged behavior. A camera-capture policy should not be treated as proof about voice recording.

What affected owners can check now
- Confirm the preference. Open the Meta AI app, select the connected glasses, and inspect the “Hey Meta” or Meta AI preferences. Verify whether “Respond without ‘Hey Meta’” is off.
- Preserve evidence. Save screenshots or exports of unexpected audio entries and transcripts. Record the glasses generation, firmware version, phone model, app version, date and time, and whether the status LED appeared.
- Check the history pattern. Note whether entries follow an intentional voice request, occur during camera use, or appear during unrelated conversation. Avoid treating a single timestamp as proof of transmission or continuous recording.
- Use official support. Submit the preserved details through Meta or Ray-Ban support. The FAQ includes microphone troubleshooting for inconsistent voice controls, but those steps are not confirmation of this reported issue.
- Limit sensitive use while investigating. If unexpected entries continue, disable voice features or disconnect the glasses until support responds, particularly during confidential conversations.
What remains unknown
- Whether the report reflects a software bug, a settings mismatch, a misinterpreted history entry, or another cause.
- Whether the behavior affects more than the reported three pairs.
- Whether the glasses captured complete conversations or only short audio segments.
- Whether any alleged recordings were transmitted to Meta, reviewed by contractors, or retained beyond the app history.
- Whether the recent firmware update is causally related.
A September 2026 podcast discussion raised broader privacy questions about voice-recording defaults, shared content and contractor review. That context is separate from this specific allegation and does not verify what happened on the owner’s glasses.

The report is a serious privacy allegation, but it is still one unverified firsthand account. Ray-Ban documents a short, optional microphone follow-up window and says an LED indicates audio processing; it does not document continuous conversation recording with that option disabled. The available information also does not show that the alleged audio was uploaded or that the problem is widespread.
