Big data architecture is the design of the connected systems that ingest, store, process, and analyze data too large, complex, or fast-moving for an organization’s conventional systems. There is no universal size cutoff: what counts as “big” depends on the tools and capabilities available to that organization.
What is big data architecture?
It is both a description of system components and a plan for how data moves among them, from its sources to useful outputs such as analysis, reports, or applications. The term “big data” does not refer to one fixed number of bytes. Data may exceed conventional systems’ capabilities because of its volume, complexity, speed, or the analytical demands placed on it. The goal is not just to hold more data, but to make it usable.
Microsoft Learn defines the field this way: “A big data architecture manages the ingestion, processing, and analysis of data that’s too large or complex for traditional database systems.” Microsoft Learn’s big data architecture overview describes common components and patterns, while a vendor-neutral conceptual model is available in NIST’s Big Data Interoperability Framework, Volume 6: Big Data Reference Architecture, published June 26, 2018.

What are the components of a big data architecture?
A logical architecture follows the data through a set of responsibilities. One deployment may combine several of them, and not every system needs every component.

- Data sources: Applications, databases, log files, devices, and other systems supply raw or previously prepared data.
- Ingestion: The system captures and moves data into the architecture. It may load collected data in batches or accept a continuing flow of events through a message-ingestion or buffering layer.
- Storage: Data is retained for processing, analysis, or later use. The storage arrangement depends on the workload and solution; the architecture concept does not prescribe one store.
- Processing: Jobs or stream processors can filter, aggregate, transform, or otherwise prepare data. Some processing operates on stored data; other processing handles incoming events.
- Analytical destinations and consumers: Prepared results may go to an analytical data store, reporting and analytics tools, or other applications. Machine-learning workloads can use data from batch and streaming paths.
These are functional roles, not a required list of products or a claim that each role must run as a separate physical system. Microsoft notes that an individual solution may not contain every component shown in its reference architecture.
What is the difference between batch and stream processing?
| Processing path | What it handles | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Batch | Data already collected and stored—data at rest—processed in groups. | When results can be produced after a scheduled or otherwise grouped processing run. |
| Stream | Incoming messages or events—data in motion—processed as they arrive. | When analysis needs to reflect new events with real-time or low latency. |
The two paths are not mutually exclusive. A system may use batch processing for stored data and stream processing for fresh events, with analytical or machine-learning workloads drawing on either path. The appropriate mix depends on how quickly results are needed and what the workload does.

What is a big data reference architecture?
A reference architecture is a conceptual model for discussing system responsibilities and functions; it is not a deployment blueprint that every organization must copy. NIST’s Big Data Reference Architecture organizes the subject through roles and fabrics, an activities view, and a functional-component view. This framing helps explain why architecture covers more than software: it also encompasses who is responsible for data and systems, what activities take place, and how governance and security and privacy requirements are addressed.

How do common big data architecture patterns differ?
Lambda, Kappa, and lakehouse are patterns discussed in Microsoft’s overview. They are design choices, not a universal ranking or a requirement to use a particular branded platform. Compare an architecture against its workload and operating needs rather than assuming one pattern is best for every organization.
- Workload: Is the main need batch processing, streaming, interactive exploration, predictive analytics, machine learning, or a combination?
- Freshness: How quickly must new data affect an analysis or application?
- Data demands: What volume, complexity, and variety must the system handle, given the organization’s existing capabilities?
- Data flow: Where will data be ingested, retained, transformed, and served?
- Use of results: How will analytics, reports, applications, or machine-learning workloads consume the data?
- Control requirements: How will governance and security/privacy requirements be applied and monitored across the design?
A reference diagram can clarify these decisions, but it should not be mistaken for a mandatory shopping list. The organization’s actual requirements determine which logical components and processing paths belong in its architecture.
