Big Bang Boom Solutions (BBBS) has unveiled a development roadmap for an Indian sovereign quantum-radar programme at its QuantEW 2026 workshop, held during IEEE MILCOM in the Washington, DC area on October 12, 2026. The proposal is based on quantum-illumination radar for detecting low-observable targets in severe background noise, but it is not a fielded product: BBBS places the work at technology readiness level (TRL) 3 and says no deployable quantum radar exists today.

What BBBS announced at IEEE MILCOM 2026

BBBS co-founder and chief technology officer Dr. Shivaraman Ramaswamy presented the company’s quantum-radar assessment and roadmap in the opening keynote at QuantEW 2026. The workshop brought quantum-technology and electronic-warfare researchers together inside IEEE MILCOM 2026, which ran from October 12 to 16 in the Washington, DC area.

The announcement concerns a sovereign research and engineering effort rather than a product launch. BBBS describes the intended system as a way to move quantum radar from laboratory work toward hardware that can eventually be mounted on platforms and, later, developed into an operational prototype.

“Bringing the quantum and electronic warfare communities together at MILCOM was a milestone for BBBS. Quantum Radar is moving from the laboratory toward engineering reality. Our approach is designed to deliver measurable advantage in the contested, noise-dominated environments where it matters most.”

How quantum-illumination radar is supposed to work

Quantum illumination uses a pair of linked photons: a signal photon sent toward a scene and an idler photon retained at the radar. If a reflected signal returns, the receiver compares it with the stored idler to look for the correlation associated with a target.

In BBBS’s proposal, that architecture is aimed at situations in which an echo is weak and the surrounding noise is strong. Stealth shaping can reduce a target’s radar return, thermal noise can obscure a signal, and digital radio-frequency-memory (DRFM) jamming can manipulate or replay radar signals. Quantum illumination is being considered because correlations between the signal and idler can survive in a way that may help distinguish a genuine target return from background noise.

Current status: a research programme, not deployable equipment

BBBS explicitly states that no field-deployable quantum radar exists today. Cryogenic requirements remain a critical engineering barrier: maintaining the conditions needed by parts of a quantum-photonic system can require bulky, power-hungry cooling hardware that is difficult to put on an aircraft, vehicle, ship, or other military platform.

Uniden R3 EXTREME LONG RANGE Laser/Radar Detector, Record Shattering Performance, Built-in GPS w/ Mute Memory, Voice Alerts, Red Light & Speed Camera Alerts, Multi-Color OLED Display , Black
  • UNSURPASSED RANGE & SENSITIVITY - Industry Leading Performance with Advanced False Alert Filtering is THE choice for drivers who demand the highest level of protection against speeding tickets.
  • GPS TECHNOLOGY - Using GPS the R3 can remember and mute common false alerts (such as retail store automatic doors) along your regularly driven routes so you never have to listen to the same false alert twice.
  • RED LIGHT AND SPEED CAMERA ALERTS - Preloaded Red Light and Speed Camera locations with Free Database and Firmware updates ensures your detector will never be out of date.
  • MULTI-COLOR OLED DISPLAY - is easy-to-Read and allows for more useful information to be displayed at once. This improves your overall situational awareness.
  • VOICE ALERTS - Voice warnings allow for hands-free operation and provide clear communication. Voice Alerts are programable to fit your driving style so you can keep your eyes on the road with no distractions.

Other practical questions still have to be resolved, including how to generate and preserve useful photon correlations, collect extremely weak returns, reject environmental noise, and integrate the receiver with existing electronic-warfare and command systems. Until those issues are solved in representative environments, “quantum radar” should be read as a technology-development objective rather than a replacement for conventional radar.

What TRL 3 means for the roadmap

BBBS places the programme at TRL 3, a stage generally associated with an experimental proof of concept in a laboratory or controlled setting. It is earlier than an integrated field demonstrator: the underlying approach may have been shown in principle, but the complete system has not yet been validated in an operationally realistic environment.

Roadmap point Status or target What it implies
Current maturity TRL 3 Experimental proof-of-concept stage
Near-term objective TRL 4–5 in about 24 months Progress toward component and system validation in relevant conditions
Platform-mounted demonstrator Longer-term goal Hardware integrated on a military or other operational platform
Operational prototype Longer-term goal A prototype intended for realistic mission use; no date was specified

If the 24-month target is measured from the October 2026 announcement, the TRL 4–5 milestone would fall around October 2028. That is an approximate planning horizon, not a committed delivery date. BBBS did not publish a date for a mounted demonstrator or operational prototype.

Why the announcement matters for electronic warfare

Electronic-warfare systems increasingly operate in crowded spectrum environments where a radar must find targets while facing intentional interference and deceptive signals. A quantum-illumination approach is relevant to that problem because it is designed around extracting information from a low-signal, high-noise return rather than assuming a clean echo.

The strategic significance is also national. BBBS characterizes the effort as sovereign, meaning the objective is to develop critical sensing capability domestically rather than depend entirely on imported technology. The company is based in Chennai, was founded in 2018, and says its work spans artificial intelligence, electronic warfare, autonomous systems, and counter-uncrewed-aircraft systems. It reports eight iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) projects and a 20,000-square-foot SHAKTI R&D Hub in Chennai.

Where to find the QuantEW technical papers

BBBS says papers submitted to QuantEW 2026 underwent peer review. Accepted papers are planned for publication in the IEEE MILCOM 2026 workshop proceedings and in IEEE Xplore. Those publications should provide more technical detail than the roadmap announcement, such as experimental methods, system assumptions, photonic architectures, and measured results when the authors disclose them.

Publication in the proceedings will document peer-reviewed research; it will not by itself mean that a field-ready radar has been demonstrated. Readers evaluating progress should distinguish among theoretical analysis, laboratory experiments, mounted demonstrators, and operational prototypes.
