A woman in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, alleged that her in-laws demanded ₹50,000 from her father and assaulted her when she tried to use a locked toilet. Police said her complaint led to an FIR against five relatives on October 1, 2026. The allegations have not been established as fact.

What the woman alleged

According to a PTI report published by Hindustan Times and attributed to her complaint, Shabnam, described as about 20 and from Roshan Tara locality in Bhadohi, said her in-laws demanded ₹50,000 from her father in the first week of September. She said she refused.

She reportedly told police that on the morning of September 27, she found the toilet door locked. When she asked for it to be opened and tried to open it herself, relatives allegedly assaulted her and told her she could use the toilet only after bringing the money. The report says she went to a neighbour’s house to use the toilet. Her complaint also reportedly said the toilet was unlocked for other family members and locked again afterwards.

Police, as quoted in the report, said Shabnam’s husband, Imtiyaz, could not get the toilet unlocked because he was allegedly afraid of his father and elder brothers. This is the police account relayed by the report, not an independently verified finding.

What police said they did

Superintendent of Police Abhinav Tyagi said the complaint led to an FIR at City Kotwali police station on Wednesday, October 1, 2026. The FIR names Shabnam’s father-in-law, Buniyaad; brothers-in-law, Iliyas and Nanhku; and sisters-in-law, Sana and Rehana. The report says City Kotwali inspector Shailesh Kumar Rai was directed to take further action.

According to the report, the FIR cites sections 85, 115 and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act. An FIR records allegations for police investigation; it is not a finding that the named people are guilty.

What is—and is not—established

The account is based on the complaint and statements by Bhadohi police reported by PTI and republished by Hindustan Times. The cited report does not provide an investigation finding, a response from the accused, or a court outcome. It therefore supports a summary of what Shabnam alleged and what police said about the FIR, not a conclusion that the alleged acts occurred.
