Beyond Words is a single-player word roguelike that combines Scrabble-like tile placement with the escalating multipliers, upgrade choices and challenge structure associated with Balatro. The iPhone and iPad version is English-only, is credited to PQube Limited, and was listed at $4.99 in Pocket Gamer’s October 14, 2024 coverage; the price and availability can vary by country and may change.
What Beyond Words is
Each run asks you to build words on a persistent board while turning letter placement into a score-building engine. You draw seven letters, connect a new word to letters already on the board, activate special squares and choose upgrades that shape the rest of the run. It is not a head-to-head Scrabble replacement: the structure is a solo score chase in which target scores rise from round to round.
The Balatro comparison describes the game’s progression rather than a card-game interface. Modifiers, power cards, shops and escalating targets let you assemble a build whose bonuses can matter as much as your vocabulary. Game coverage specifically describes Balatro-like multipliers that can carry a run even when a player is not an expert Scrabble competitor.
How a run works
Draw, connect and score
- Draw seven letters from the bag.
- Place a word so it connects to words already on the board, following the game’s word-placement rules.
- Use special squares to upgrade letters played on them.
- Score the word from tile values, word length and active multipliers. Using all available tiles provides an additional bonus.
The board persists between rounds. When the bag is empty, it refills with the same letters and their accumulated upgrades, so early placement decisions continue to affect later scoring.

Beat the rising target
You can play up to five words in a round. The required target increases exponentially, making a build’s modifiers increasingly important. A modest word with a strong multiplier can be more valuable than a longer word that does not fit your upgrade plan.
Build an upgrade engine
Runs include modifiers, power cards and shops. The App Store listing advertises more than 300 unique modifiers and abilities, including bomb, virus, multiplier, lock and hazard tile effects. The same listing advertises more than 30 unique boss challenges. Those figures are publisher storefront claims, so the exact mix and balance may change with updates.

Modes and challenge content
Pocket Gamer reported 40 handmade challenges, seeded runs and time attacks. Seeded runs make a particular sequence reproducible, while time attacks add pressure to the normally deliberate process of finding a high-value placement. Coverage also describes shifting boards and changing objectives, giving the game goals beyond simply accumulating the largest possible word score.

Boss challenges add constraints to the normal loop. The available listing describes more than 30 of them, but does not provide a complete rule-by-rule catalogue; expect boss encounters to alter the conditions under which a run can succeed rather than functioning as ordinary target-score rounds.

Practical strategy for new players
Use early rounds to prepare
A review published by Siliconera on April 7, 2026 observed that successful play can involve slow-playing early rounds, making words that can be amended later and powering up a build before attempting a very large word. That is a reviewer’s strategic observation, not a guaranteed optimal solution, but it captures the game’s central tension: immediate points versus a stronger board and multiplier economy.
Plan around the persistent board
- Prefer placements that leave useful extension opportunities instead of closing off the most flexible lanes.
- Track which upgraded letters will return when the bag refills; their value can compound across rounds.
- Save premium spaces and powerful modifiers for turns where they help clear a sharply higher target.
- Consider the all-tiles bonus when your rack and board make a full play realistic, but do not sacrifice a reliable multiplier setup for it.

Choose Beyond Words if you want word placement with a run-based upgrade system and do not need multiplayer competition. Choose standard Scrabble for the social, head-to-head board game. Balatro remains the closer fit if the appeal is card-combo construction rather than vocabulary and spatial placement.

Platforms, language and price
The official App Store listing covers iPhone and iPad and specifies English as the supported language. Pocket Gamer reported an iOS price of $4.99 on October 14, 2024; check the listing in your country before purchasing because storefront prices and availability are regional and change over time. PQube’s launch announcement described the game as a “Scrabble-like Balatro-inspired word-puzzler,” and launch coverage also recorded availability beyond the initial iOS announcement through a Steam community post.

Beyond Words is a good match for players who enjoy finding high-scoring words but want more than the fixed rules of a traditional board game. Its persistent board, escalating targets and large modifier pool create room for experimentation, while seeded and timed challenges support repeat runs. The main limitation is focus: it is designed for solo optimization, not for playing against another person, and the English-only iOS listing narrows its accessibility for non-English players.
