The safest opening in Beyond These Stars is a compact, serviceable settlement on Kewa: secure housing, food, water and wood first, then add storage, roads and production. Keep each Peep close to a workplace, account for every by-product, and expand only after the basic supply loop continues without shortages.

This approach lets you learn Kewa’s production graph without exhausting workers, starving the colony or creating pollution you cannot yet manage.

What you are building on Kewa

Beyond These Stars begins on Kewa, a sentient space whale. The Home Spaceship anchors the first settlement, and your colony develops on Kewa’s living surface rather than on an ordinary, inert map. That distinction matters: construction, resource extraction, ecological management and your relationship with Kewa are connected systems.

Peeps are the colonists who carry resources between buildings, take jobs and consume supplies to recover from work. The official Hooded Horse wiki describes resources as natural or produced items that Peeps move between buildings to make other goods and satisfy needs. You therefore manage two networks at once:

A settlement can have enough raw material and still fail if workers cannot reach jobs or if food and water are unreliable. Conversely, a well-laid-out colony can stall when an industrial building creates waste that has no destination. Build the first network before making the second one complicated.

Day-one build order

The opening objective is not maximum population or the largest factory. It is a dependable loop that lets Peeps work, recover and construct the next group of buildings.

  1. Place a Hut beside the Home Spaceship. Keep the first home near the starting hub and leave room for additional housing. A compact first district shortens early walks and gives you flexibility when the colony grows.
  2. Add a Water Pump near a water source. Confirm that the pump can operate from its chosen position before committing to roads or other structures around it.
  3. Build a Potato Patch. Food is an operating supply, not a decorative upgrade. Establish production before you add buildings that increase the number of workers or the colony’s consumption.
  4. Construct a Woodcutter. Wood is needed for early construction, so a reliable source prevents the first expansion from competing with basic survival needs.
  5. Connect the buildings with roads. A road link between homes, jobs, storage and services gives Peeps a practical route instead of leaving them to make long detours across the terrain.
  6. Check workers before placing more industry. Make sure Peeps can reach their assigned jobs from their homes and that food and water continue to arrive. Only then reserve space for the next housing cluster or production building.

Keep the first layout deliberately small. Rushing factories or spreading homes over a wide area increases walking time and creates more demand before the colony has a recovery system.

How Peep work distance determines your layout

A Peep will take a job only when that workplace is within 16 tiles of the Peep’s home. This is the most important placement rule in the opening settlement: housing is not merely a population container; it defines which jobs can be staffed efficiently.

Place homes as coverage anchors

Use the Home Spaceship and the first Hut as the center of a compact district. When you add housing, place it close enough to the jobs that district is intended to serve. Do not build a long residential strip and expect one end to staff production at the other end.

Build a district around a job group

Group a Woodcutter and other early workplaces around nearby homes, with roads connecting the group to storage and services. A new industrial area should receive its own housing capacity rather than drawing every worker from the original Hut.

Reserve space before filling it

Leave open tiles around early housing for later homes and roads. Rebuilding a dense starting block is more disruptive than keeping a modest expansion corridor from the beginning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the four-distance questions

  • Can a Peep walk from home to the assigned workplace without leaving the intended district?
  • Can the same worker reach food, drink and storage on a practical route?
  • Will a new road shorten the route, or merely add another branch to maintain?
  • Does a proposed workplace require a new housing cluster to remain staffed?

If the answer to the last question is yes, create the housing and recovery capacity first. A production building that sits idle because its workers live too far away is not useful capacity.

Stabilize food, water, happiness and energy

Food and drink restore Peep happiness and energy between work shifts. Shortages therefore reduce production indirectly: tired or unhappy workers have less ability to sustain the jobs that keep the colony supplied.

Protect the basic loop

Keep the Potato Patch and Water Pump operating before expanding the workforce. When adding housing, check whether existing food and water production can support the additional residents. If not, expand those supplies first.

Read shortages as system warnings

A food or drink shortfall can indicate more than a missing building. It may reflect an overlarge workforce, a long route, an inaccessible workplace, insufficient storage or a production building that is consuming workers needed elsewhere. Inspect the entire chain instead of immediately adding another factory.

Expand recovery before industry

When you establish a new district, add housing and basic recovery capacity before assigning a complex industrial chain to it. This keeps new workers productive and prevents the original district from being drained to staff distant buildings.

Understand Kewa’s resource progression

Early workers near the Home Spaceship can gather wood, stone and iron. Later areas introduce copper, shell and crystal. The map therefore changes the set of materials available to you as you expand, while specialized buildings improve the efficiency of some basic resources.

Resource stage Materials and role Planning implication
Opening area Wood, stone and iron gathered near the Home Spaceship Use these to support the first homes, roads and construction steps before searching widely.
Later areas Copper, shell and crystal become available Plan travel and outpost infrastructure before committing to a chain that depends on distant deposits.
Specialized production Buildings produce primary resources more efficiently and may create by-products Reserve storage and a destination for secondary outputs before increasing throughput.

Do not treat a deposit as the same thing as a finished supply. A natural resource must be gathered, moved and often processed before it satisfies a construction or production requirement. Roads, storage and worker access are part of the resource plan.

Plan production around outputs and by-products

Every production building should be evaluated for what it creates besides its headline product. The official wiki gives two useful examples: a Woodcutter produces Wood as its primary resource and Wood Waste as a by-product; a Burner Generator produces Power and Soot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record both sides of each building

Before placing a new producer, identify:

  • Its input materials and where they will come from.
  • Its primary output and which building or service will consume it.
  • Its by-products and whether they need storage, processing or disposal.
  • The roads and workers needed to keep the chain moving.

Do not hide waste in the expansion plan

Wood Waste and Soot are not harmless blanks in the interface. If a by-product accumulates without a use or handling route, it can occupy storage and contribute to the colony’s wider pollution and waste-management burden. Place the destination for secondary outputs at the same time as the producer, or delay the producer.

Scale one chain at a time

Start with a single dependable chain and observe its inputs, output and by-product flow. Add a second producer only when the first chain has stable workers, storage and demand. This makes it easier to identify whether a failure comes from a missing input, a blocked output or an exhausted workforce.

Storage, roads and practical logistics

Resource buildings do not operate in isolation. Peeps must carry materials between buildings, so the shortest-looking route is not always the most reliable route if it lacks a road or passes through an awkward district.

Connect the four essential points

For each district, make a clear route between homes, workplaces, storage and recovery services. Keep storage close enough to the production group that workers are not spending their shifts crossing the settlement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use roads to support districts, not sprawl

Extend a road when it links a home cluster to a job cluster, a job cluster to storage, or a new district to the established network. Avoid laying long roads into undeveloped territory merely because future expansion might eventually reach them.

Watch for a logistics bottleneck

If production appears to have enough inputs but the next building still cannot operate, inspect whether materials are waiting in the wrong place or whether workers are spending too much time walking. A short road connection or a nearby storage building can be more effective than another producer.

A layered expansion plan

Expand in layers rather than unlocking every available system at once. The following sequence follows the documented relationship between worker access, supplies, production, ecological health and travel.

Layer 1: Housing and recovery

Place enough Huts for the intended workforce and keep them close to the jobs they must staff. Maintain food and water capacity while the population grows. This layer gives the colony a stable base.

Layer 2: Basic construction materials

Secure wood, stone and iron from the starting area. Add the Woodcutter and other basic resource support only when the first loop can continue without taking food or water workers away from their jobs.

Layer 3: Storage and road structure

Organize a compact district with clear routes. Add storage where it reduces carrying distance and reserve room for another housing cluster rather than filling every open tile.

Layer 4: Specialized production

Introduce production chains after you know their inputs, primary outputs and by-products. Build the receiving or handling capacity for secondary outputs alongside the producer.

Layer 5: Ecological controls

Include pollution and waste handling in the design of every industrial district. Do not wait until the colony is large to consider where unwanted outputs will go.

Layer 6: Travel and outposts

Prepare landing infrastructure and a supply plan before establishing distant outposts. Strengthen your relationship with Kewa and ensure the home settlement can continue operating while workers and materials support travel.

Kewa’s health is an operating resource

Kewa is part of the colony’s operating environment, not merely scenery. The beginner guidance connects tree planting, pollution control, whale health, travel speed and later memory conversations. These systems make ecological planning a practical concern.

Plant and preserve trees as you expand

When laying out new districts, leave room for ecological measures rather than paving every available area. Tree planting is one of the actions linked to Kewa’s health, so include it in the expansion plan instead of treating it as decoration added after construction.

Control pollution at the source

Industrial buildings can create outputs such as Soot. Decide how those outputs will be handled before increasing production. A district that is efficient only because it ignores pollution is not stable; its environmental cost can affect whale health and later movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect colony health to travel readiness

The beginner guide links Kewa’s condition to travel speed. That makes ecological maintenance relevant before you open distant routes. A healthy home platform gives you a stronger base for outposts and encounters.

Prepare for outposts and galaxy travel

The Steam description presents outposts, alien encounters, supply chains and galaxy travel as core parts of the game loop. Travel is therefore an extension of colony logistics, not a separate menu to click once the settlement is finished.

Build the home economy first

Before sending resources or workers away, verify that the original district can maintain food, water, construction materials and basic staffing without the traveling group. A fragile home economy can fail while attention is focused on an outpost.

Plan landing infrastructure

Prepare the infrastructure required for landing and supply movement before committing to a remote site. The route should have a clear source of materials and a way to receive what the outpost produces or needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treat an outpost as a new district

Use the same questions you used on Kewa: where will workers live, how will they recover, which resources are local, what must be imported, and where will by-products go? If the answers are unclear, strengthen the main colony and its supply chain first.

Story Mode or Sandbox Mode?

Choose the mode that matches what you are trying to learn.

Mode Best use Trade-off
Story Mode Recommended first playthrough; systems are introduced in sequence. The teaching pace controls when you encounter mechanics, so experimentation is less immediate.
Sandbox Mode Testing layouts, production arrangements and mechanics without as much instructional pacing. You must provide your own learning order and can encounter interconnected systems before understanding their dependencies.

Start in Story Mode if you want the game to reveal its systems gradually. Use Sandbox Mode when you already understand the basics or want to test a housing pattern, production chain or road layout without waiting for the guided sequence.

A decision framework for every new district

When comparing two possible layouts or deciding whether to expand, score each option against four questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Axis Question to ask Good sign Warning sign
Worker walking distance Can homes, jobs, storage and services be connected with short practical routes? Existing Peeps can staff the district without a distant housing pull. Workers must cross the settlement or a workplace sits outside home coverage.
Food and water reliability Can the district recover workers while supporting its planned population? Basic supplies remain available after adding homes. New industry depends on supplies that are already intermittent.
By-product and pollution handling Where do secondary outputs go? Each producer has storage, use or handling capacity for its by-products. Waste or Soot is left without a destination.
Housing and road cost What must be extended before the district can operate? Housing and roads can be added in a compact, reserved area. The plan requires a long road or scattered homes before producing anything.

This framework prevents a visually attractive layout from winning on appearance alone. A compact district with dependable supplies and manageable waste is usually a stronger foundation than a larger but disconnected build.

Troubleshoot the most common opening failures

Peeps refuse a job

Check the distance between the Peep’s home and the workplace first. If the workplace is outside the 16-tile work radius, move the job, add nearby housing or redesign the district so workers do not need to commute from the original Hut.

Food or drink runs out

Pause new housing and industry. Verify that the Potato Patch and Water Pump are operating, that routes are connected, and that the workforce assigned to basic supplies has not been pulled into a new production chain.

Wood is always missing

Inspect the Woodcutter’s worker access and route to storage. Confirm that construction demand has not expanded faster than wood production and that Wood Waste is not obstructing the output flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A factory has inputs but does not deliver

Look for a blocked output or unhandled by-product. A producer can appear supplied while its storage or receiving destination is full. Add the missing destination or reduce the number of producers until the chain clears.

Pollution becomes a crisis

Stop adding industrial capacity and identify which buildings generate unwanted outputs. Handle those outputs, add ecological measures such as tree planting where appropriate, and keep Kewa’s health in the expansion plan rather than postponing the issue.

An outpost destabilizes the home colony

Review the home settlement’s food, water, staffing and construction reserves. If travel has removed workers or materials needed for the basic loop, reinforce the original district before enlarging the outpost.

The practical rule for steady growth

Every expansion should answer four questions before construction begins: who will live there, what will they eat and drink, which jobs can they reach, and where will every output—including waste—go? If you can answer those questions with the current roads, housing and production, the district is ready. If not, improve the existing loop first.
