The right Hatsu starts with the job you need it to perform, not with a race to become a Specialist. In Hunter x Hunter, Enhancement is usually the efficient choice for direct damage and durability, Transmutation for changing aura into deceptive properties, Emission for fighting at range, Manipulation for control, Conjuration for tools and rule systems, and Specialization for effects that do not fit the other five. A strong build gives one category a clear primary role, then uses neighboring categories for support while accepting their lower efficiency.

This guide compares all six Nen categories, explains the affinity model, and gives a practical method for designing a Hatsu around range, information, defense, recovery, setup time, and restrictions. Examples from later arcs are marked as spoilers.

What a Hatsu category actually determines

Nen is the system of aura use in Hunter x Hunter. A Hatsu is an individual expression of that aura: an attack, tool, control method, information system, transformation, or unusual rule. The six categories describe how aura is being used, but they do not function as a universal ranking from weakest to strongest.

Your natural category is the one in which training is most efficient. The other categories can still be used, but the distance from your native category generally increases the training cost and lowers the amount of aura converted into the intended effect. Conditions, total aura reserves, tactical knowledge, and the wording of the ability can matter more than the label in a particular matchup.

The six categories at a glance

Category Primary function Best build jobs Typical risk
Enhancement Reinforces the user or an object Close-range offense, durability, healing support, reliable exchanges Needs a way to handle distance, deception, or unusual conditions
Transmutation Changes the properties of aura Adaptable offense, feints, mobility, effects that imitate a material or behavior Requires precise control and a convincing tactical application
Emission Projects aura away from the body Ranged attacks, remote pressure, area coverage, support fire Power and control can fall off as distance and complexity increase
Manipulation Controls people, creatures, objects, or systems Commands, traps, indirect victories, automated actions Often depends on landing a trigger and protecting the controller
Conjuration Creates aura-derived objects or rule-bound systems Specialized equipment, detection, storage, contracts, information Detailed rules create predictable failure points if an opponent learns them
Specialization Produces an effect outside the other five categories Singular, difficult-to-classify abilities with unusual information or authority Rarely offers a general advantage by itself; the ability still needs conditions and a usable tactic

Canonical abilities are often mixed constructions. For example, an ability may have an Enhancement core and an Emission component, or a Conjured object whose rules require Manipulation. When comparing a character, identify the dominant category first, then list the supporting techniques instead of forcing the whole ability into one box.

The affinity model: how much support work can your build afford?

The category hexagon places each affinity beside related categories. A commonly cited compatibility-guide model assigns 100% efficiency to the native category, 60% to an adjacent category, 40% to a category two steps away, and 20% to the opposite category. Those percentages are a planning model, not a published win-rate statistic or a promise that every user converts aura identically.

Relationship to your native category Guide-model efficiency How to use it in a build
Native category 100% Give this the main job and the largest share of training time.
Adjacent category 60% Choose one for a practical support function such as range, restraint, or mobility.
Two steps away 40% Use sparingly for a narrow feature whose benefit justifies extra cost.
Opposite category 20% Avoid making this the engine of the ability unless an exceptional condition or talent supports it.

Efficiency is only one part of the result. A fighter with a smaller aura reserve may prefer a simple native-category technique, while a tactician with excellent information and preparation can make a lower-efficiency effect decisive. Vows can also exchange freedom, safety, or availability for greater output. Treat the hexagon as a budget: every support category consumes training and aura that cannot be spent on the core job.

Compare a Hatsu on five decision axes

Before choosing a category, write down the conditions of the fights the ability must survive. Compare every candidate on the same five axes.

  1. Native-category efficiency: Is the main effect in your natural category, or are you paying a permanent conversion penalty for the headline feature?
  2. Distance and mobility: Does the ability require contact, work within arm’s reach, cover a room, or remain useful while you are moving or retreating?
  3. Setup time and information: What must happen before activation? Do you need an object, a mark, a spoken command, a known name, line of sight, or time to study the target?
  4. Defense and recovery: What protects you while the ability is active, and what happens if it misses, is dispelled, or leaves you exhausted?
  5. Restrictions and vows: Which freedoms are you giving up, and is the resulting power worth losing access in other situations?

A build is usually balanced when one category handles the primary win condition and one or two neighboring categories handle support. Trying to make one Hatsu equally strong at melee, sniping, healing, scouting, and control usually produces a long rule set with no reliable finishing plan.

Enhancement: the dependable close-range build

Enhancement reinforces the user or an object. It is the clearest choice when your plan is to win exchanges through stronger strikes, tougher defense, or a weapon that must survive repeated impacts. Its value is consistency: the ability can remain useful even when an opponent has not revealed a weakness.

Choose Enhancement when

  • You expect to fight at close range and can create openings with footwork or timing.
  • Your team needs a durable front line rather than a complicated setup.
  • You want an ability that remains effective when information is incomplete.

What to add

An adjacent category can cover the problem Enhancement does not solve. Limited Emission can extend a strike or maintain pressure as an opponent retreats. Transmutation can give the aura an unexpected behavior without replacing the reinforced hit. Keep the support effect narrow so the build does not become a weaker imitation of a specialist.

Canon example

Gon’s Jajanken presents a recognizable Enhancement core: the charged punch is the straightforward finishing option, while the other forms demonstrate how a fighter can use related categories to create distance or deception. The lesson is not that every Enhancer needs the same three-part technique; it is that a clear primary attack can support carefully defined alternatives.

Transmutation: adaptable properties and deception

Transmutation changes the properties of aura. The category suits fighters who win by making an opponent misread distance, texture, timing, or the apparent behavior of an attack. It rewards imagination, but the property must be trained well enough to function under pressure.

Choose Transmutation when

  • You want one aura form to create several tactical situations.
  • Feints, traps, and irregular movement matter more than raw impact.
  • You can explain exactly what the altered aura can and cannot do.

Canon examples

Hisoka’s Bungee Gum is a classic example of a simple property used creatively for offense, movement, and misdirection. Killua’s Godspeed shows a different route: a transmuted electrical quality combined with demanding control and reaction requirements. Both abilities are powerful because their users understand the property and build tactics around it, not because Transmutation automatically outranks another category.

Emission: when the fight leaves your body

Emission projects aura away from the user. It is the natural home for ranged attacks, remote pressure, and techniques that must keep functioning while the user changes position. An Emission build should specify how accuracy, force, and control change with distance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions to answer before choosing Emission

  • What is the effective range, and does power fall off across that range?
  • Can the projectile be redirected, recalled, or used to protect an ally?
  • What happens if an opponent closes the distance before you can fire again?
  • How do you conserve aura during a long pursuit rather than a single exchange?

Emission pairs naturally with Enhancement for a fighter who wants a strong body and a credible ranged option. It can also support Manipulation or Conjuration, but each added layer increases the information and control burden.

Manipulation: control, commands, and indirect victories

Manipulation controls people, creatures, objects, or systems. Instead of overpowering an opponent directly, the user creates a condition under which the opponent’s own movement becomes the defeat mechanism.

Build requirements

  • Trigger: Define the contact, mark, object, or action that permits control.
  • Authority: State what can be commanded and whether the target can resist, interpret, or exploit the wording.
  • Protection: Plan for the vulnerable period before the trigger lands and while the controller is concentrating.
  • Fallback: Include a useful action if the target avoids the condition or breaks line of sight.

Manipulation is especially strong when combined with preparation and reconnaissance. It is less attractive when the fight is too fast to establish the trigger or when the opponent can force the controller into direct combat.

Conjuration: tools, information, and rules

Conjuration creates aura-derived objects or systems. A Conjurer can turn an abstract plan into equipment with a defined interface: a detector, key, chain, container, contract, or other specialized tool. The object is only half the ability; its rules determine its tactical value.

Design the rule before decorating the object

Specify who can use the object, what it can target, what evidence activates it, how long it lasts, and what happens when a condition is violated. A visually impressive object with vague limits is difficult to balance and easy for an opponent to exploit. A narrow object with reliable information can be more useful than a weapon that tries to solve every problem.

Canon example

Kurapika’s chains demonstrate how restrictions can define a Conjuration-centered build. Their threat comes from clearly bounded conditions and purpose, not from the mere fact that they are conjured. Readers should separate the normal category use from effects enabled by exceptional conditions.

Specialization: unique effects, not a strength ranking

Specialization covers effects that do not fit Enhancement, Transmutation, Emission, Manipulation, or Conjuration. It is the right label for a genuinely singular mechanic, especially one involving unusual information, identity, or authority. It is not a shortcut to being “the strongest” category.

Chrollo’s Skill Hunter illustrates the attraction and the cost: an extraordinary result is tied to specific acquisition and use conditions. A Specialist build must therefore answer more questions than a simple attack: What qualifies as a target? What must be observed or obtained? Can the ability be repeated? What prevents an opponent from denying the required condition?

How to design a balanced Hatsu step by step

  1. Write the win condition in one sentence. For example: “I win by forcing a retreat through repeated mid-range pressure,” or “I win by immobilizing one marked target long enough for an ally to finish.”
  2. Select the native category that performs that job. If the sentence is about reinforcement, begin with Enhancement; if it is about an aura property, begin with Transmutation; if it is about remote force, begin with Emission; if it is about commands, begin with Manipulation; if it is about a tool and rules, begin with Conjuration; reserve Specialization for an effect that truly falls outside those functions.
  3. Choose one support category. Give it a specific task such as extending range, hiding the activation, marking a target, or creating an escape route. Use the affinity distance to estimate the cost.
  4. Define activation and information requirements. List contact, line of sight, spoken words, objects, names, charge time, and any knowledge the user must obtain.
  5. Build a defensive and recovery loop. Decide how the user survives a miss, interruption, recoil, aura depletion, or a target who knows the rules.
  6. Add a restriction only when it solves a design problem. A vow should make the main effect more reliable or powerful in the situations that matter, not merely add dramatic wording.
  7. Test three failure cases. Run the design against a faster melee opponent, a distant attacker, and an enemy who knows the ability. If it has no playable response to one case, narrow the mission or add a modest support function rather than another unrelated power.

Build patterns for common fighting styles

Fighting style Primary category Support idea Key trade-off
Front-line brawler Enhancement Limited Emission for pressure during disengagement Less reach and fewer options against prepared traps
Feint-heavy duelist Transmutation Enhancement for a reliable finishing strike Requires exact property control and deceptive timing
Ranged controller Emission Manipulation or a marking condition Must manage aura loss, accuracy, and close-range defense
Trap specialist Manipulation Conjuration for a trigger object or detection tool Preparation and information are more important than raw speed
Rule-bound investigator Conjuration Emission or Manipulation for remote use Opponents who learn the rules can attack the conditions
Singular information user Specialization Conjuration or Manipulation to apply the result Rare activation conditions can make the ability unusable at the wrong time

Restrictions and vows: trading freedom for output

A restriction limits when, where, or how an ability works. A vow is a deliberate commitment that can carry a harsher consequence. The design principle is proportionality: the narrower and more dangerous the commitment, the more meaningful the potential gain can be, but the user also loses flexibility.

Useful restrictions remove ambiguity. “Only against a named class of target,” “only after a verified condition,” or “only while a particular object remains intact” gives the ability a tactical identity. A restriction that never changes the user’s choices is mostly flavor. A restriction that makes the user helpless in ordinary encounters may produce impressive peak power but a poor overall build.

Spoiler-aware canon references and reading order

For an accessible introduction, the early Nen-training material is the safest starting point. VIZ’s synopsis for Hunter x Hunter Vol. 7 centers on Gon and Killua studying Nen with Wing, which makes it a useful companion for readers learning the categories alongside the protagonists.

Later-arc spoiler: VIZ’s synopsis for Vol. 37 introduces newer Nen users during the succession-war storyline. Use that volume only if you are comfortable with developments beyond the early training arc. The examples in this guide identify the category and design lesson without treating later abilities as a simple power ladder.

Common Hatsu-building mistakes

  • Picking Specialist because it sounds strongest: category rarity does not supply a win condition, range, defense, or usable activation.
  • Making every feature primary: an ability that attacks, heals, scouts, seals, flies, and controls usually pays for complexity with poor reliability.
  • Ignoring setup: a powerful effect that needs several minutes, undisclosed information, or a fragile object may never activate in the fight you imagined.
  • Leaving defense until the end: every offensive plan needs an answer for interruption, pursuit, and aura depletion.
  • Adding vows without a purpose: restrictions should improve the central job, not compensate for an unfocused concept.
  • Confusing category with outcome: matchup, terrain, information, teamwork, and the opponent’s conditions can overturn an apparent affinity advantage.

Bottom line: choose the job, then pay for the support

Start with the result your Hatsu must produce. Put that result in the category that performs it most efficiently, use an adjacent category for one clearly defined support function, and write the activation, defense, recovery, and restriction rules before adding extra spectacle. Enhancement, Transmutation, Emission, Manipulation, Conjuration, and Specialization are design tools rather than a universal ranking. The best build is the one whose main job remains reliable when the opponent knows the rules and the fight does not follow your preferred setup.
