Responsive image performance comes from matching each download to the image’s rendered size, reserving its space in the page, and loading critical images promptly. Use srcset and sizes for suitable image candidates, <picture> when the image itself must change, and lazy loading only for images that can wait.
How responsive images reduce unnecessary downloads
A browser needs two kinds of information to choose a suitable image file: the files available and the width the image is expected to occupy in the layout. The srcset attribute lists image candidates and their intrinsic widths; sizes estimates the rendered slot width. The browser uses those details along with device pixel density to select a candidate.
For example, an image in a one-third-width column on a wide screen may occupy only about a third of the viewport. If its sizes value incorrectly says 100vw, the browser may select a larger file than the layout needs. Keep the size conditions aligned with the actual CSS layout. sizes guides resource selection; it does not set the image’s CSS dimensions.
Provide width candidates and a fallback
This example assumes the image is full-width on narrow screens and occupies one third of the viewport above 900 pixels. Adjust the breakpoints and slot widths to match your own CSS:

alt="A mountain lake beneath a cloudy sky">The width descriptors, such as 480w and 1200w, give the browser each candidate’s intrinsic width. The src provides a fallback. The sizes rule estimates the slot: below 900 pixels it is the full viewport width; at 900 pixels and above it is one third. Those values are illustrative, not universal. If your image occupies half the viewport at a breakpoint, describe that instead.
When to use <picture> instead
Use srcset and sizes when the image is the same composition at different resolutions and the browser can choose an appropriate file. Use <picture> with <source> when the source needs to be selected explicitly—for example, to show a tighter mobile crop or offer a format-specific source. Keep an <img> element inside as the fallback, with its alternative text and image attributes.

</picture>Here the source rule offers a portrait-oriented crop on narrow screens, while the fallback image serves wider layouts. Crops can have different aspect ratios, so ensure the page reserves appropriate space for the selected image rather than assuming every source has the fallback image’s proportions.

Reserve space to prevent layout movement
Include intrinsic width and height attributes on images. The browser can use their ratio to reserve space before the file finishes loading, reducing shifts in surrounding content. As the web.dev responsive-images documentation puts it, “If you know your image’s dimensions, always include width and height attributes.”

For responsive files that show the same composition, use variants with a common aspect ratio. If you use art-directed crops with different ratios, make sure the layout accounts for the chosen crop’s dimensions.
Lazy-load images that are below the fold
For an image that is offscreen when the page opens and is not needed immediately, add loading="lazy":

alt="A detail from the gallery exhibit">Native lazy loading can defer offscreen requests and reduce competition for bandwidth with resources needed sooner. It generally does not require a JavaScript lazy-loading library for this purpose.
Do not lazy-load a hero image or another image likely to be the page’s Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) element. It may not be requested until styles and layout establish its position, delaying its load. Web.dev guidance warns: “Never lazy-load your LCP image, as that will always lead to unnecessary resource load delay, and will have a negative impact on LCP.”

Prioritize the critical image selectively
If a critical image is present in the initial HTML and readily discoverable, fetchpriority="high" can signal that the browser should fetch it at higher priority:

alt="A mountain lake beneath a cloudy sky">Use the hint sparingly. Raising one resource’s priority can reduce priority for another, so it is not a setting to apply to every image.
When a preload can help
Preload is most useful when a critical image is not readily discoverable in the initial HTML, such as an image inserted by script or used as a CSS background. A responsive preload can provide imagesrcset and imagesizes so its early request can match the appropriate candidate. Avoid indiscriminate preloading: competing preloads or format alternatives can trigger redundant transfers.

Responsive markup works only when usable variants exist and its size estimates reflect the layout. For a small set of images, you may be able to produce and maintain the variants manually. Sites handling many images can consider an image CDN or transformation workflow to generate and deliver variants; that is a workflow category, not a guarantee of faster results or a recommendation for a particular provider.
