Betelgeuse and Antares are both cool, luminous red supergiants that can be seen without a telescope, but they occupy different constellations and have been studied in different ways. Betelgeuse marks Orion’s shoulder, while Antares lies in Scorpius. NASA’s 2023 explainer gives Betelgeuse a diameter of about 700 times the Sun’s and a mass of about 15 Suns; an ESO release gives Antares a diameter of about 700 solar diameters and a mass of about 12 Suns. Those rounded, source-specific estimates do not establish a dependable size or mass winner.
The clearest scientific contrast is observational. NASA describes Betelgeuse as a semiregular variable with cycles near 400 days and five years, and connects its dramatic 2019 fading to a surface mass ejection. ESO’s work on Antares instead mapped motions in its extended atmosphere and found unexpected turbulence. Both stars are late in their evolution and are expected eventually to end as supernovae, but none of these sources predicts that either explosion is imminent.
Betelgeuse and Antares at a glance
The two stars look similar because both are red supergiants: very large, cool, luminous stars in an advanced stage of stellar evolution. Their red-orange appearance and naked-eye visibility make them easy to compare, yet the available measurements are not a single, matched experiment. The values below come from separate institutional summaries published in different years.
| Comparison | Betelgeuse | Antares | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common name and designation | Betelgeuse, also called Alpha Orionis | Antares | Different stars in different constellations |
| Constellation | Orion | Scorpius | A firm sky-location distinction |
| Visibility | Naked-eye star | Naked-eye star | No telescope is required to see either one under a suitable sky |
| Approximate diameter | About 700 times the Sun’s size, in NASA’s 2023 explainer | About 700 times the Sun’s diameter, in ESO’s 2017 release | Similar rounded estimates; no reliable winner |
| Approximate mass | About 15 solar masses, NASA, 2023 | About 12 solar masses, ESO, 2017 | Separate estimates, not a controlled head-to-head analysis |
| Surface temperature | About 3,300 °C, NASA, 2023 | Not stated as a matched number in the cited ESO release | Both are described as comparatively cool red supergiants; a numerical ranking is not established |
| Variability information in these sources | Semiregular cycles of roughly 400 days and five years | Atmospheric motion and turbulence are documented; no directly comparable cycle is supplied | Do not treat the absence of a cycle figure as proof that Antares is non-variable |
| Distance | About 700 light-years in NASA’s 2023 explainer; roughly 548 light-years in a NASA 2024 observing article | Not stated in the consulted sources | No defensible closer-star verdict from this source set |
| Recent notable result | ESO reported strong evidence for a companion in 2026 | ESO’s 2017 VLTI observations mapped its surface and atmosphere | Different research questions, not a direct contest |
What makes both stars red supergiants?
A red supergiant is an evolved star that has expanded enormously and has a relatively cool visible surface compared with hotter, bluer stars. “Cool” is relative here: the surface remains hot by everyday standards, but its lower stellar temperature shifts much of the visible light toward red and orange wavelengths. The class is also intrinsically luminous because the expanded star radiates across a huge surface area.

Betelgeuse and Antares are therefore related types of object, not two stages of the same star. Their similar color does not mean that their masses, distances, atmospheric structures or evolutionary histories are identical. Measurements of each star also come from different instruments, models and publication dates, so apparently similar numbers should not be treated as precision measurements of equality.
Where are Betelgeuse and Antares in the sky?
Betelgeuse: Orion’s shoulder
Betelgeuse is the star commonly identified as marking one of Orion’s shoulders. NASA also gives it the designation Alpha Orionis. Orion is one of the most recognizable constellations, so the star’s location is the easiest practical way to distinguish it from Antares: find Orion’s familiar pattern and look for the strongly orange-red star at the shoulder.
Antares: the heart of Scorpius
Antares is in Scorpius, a separate constellation whose outline is often described as scorpion-shaped. Its name and color can invite comparisons with Mars, but the important point for this question is positional: Antares is not in Orion and will not appear beside Betelgeuse in the same constellation pattern.

Yes. Both are naked-eye stars. A seasonal star chart or planisphere can help you identify Orion and Scorpius, but binoculars or a telescope are not prerequisites for seeing either red supergiant. Their visibility at a particular time depends on season, latitude, local horizon and sky brightness, so an observing plan should use a chart appropriate to your location rather than assuming both are above the horizon together.
Are they the same size?
The short answer is that the cited summaries make them look similar in size, but they do not prove a tie or identify a winner.
Betelgeuse’s estimate
NASA’s 2023 “What is Betelgeuse?” explainer describes Betelgeuse as about 700 times the Sun’s size. In a red supergiant context, that is a rounded scale estimate, not a claim that the star’s boundary can be measured like the edge of a solid ball.

Antares’s estimate
ESO’s 2017 release gives Antares a diameter of about 700 times the Sun’s diameter. The wording is similarly approximate and comes from a different institution and analysis.
Why “which is bigger?” has no firm answer here
Red supergiants have extended, changing atmospheres. The apparent edge depends on the wavelength and measurement method, while the inferred physical diameter also depends on distance and modeling. Because the two quoted values are rounded to the same order and were not obtained as a harmonized comparison, saying that Betelgeuse is definitively larger—or that Antares is—would claim more precision than the evidence supports.
Which star is more massive?
The published figures point in different directions from the diameter question, but they must be read with the same caution.
Betelgeuse: about 15 Suns
NASA’s 2023 explainer gives Betelgeuse an approximate mass of 15 solar masses. “Solar masses” means a comparison with the mass of the Sun, not a direct weighing; astronomers infer stellar mass from observations and models.
Antares: about 12 Suns
ESO’s 2017 release reports about 12 solar masses for Antares. That estimate is also approximate and belongs to ESO’s specific source context.
On those individual summaries alone, Betelgeuse’s quoted mass is higher. It would be misleading, however, to present 15 versus 12 as a controlled measurement showing that Betelgeuse is certainly more massive. The figures were not published as a matched analysis using the same assumptions, and the source set does not provide uncertainty ranges that would support a precision ranking.

Which one is hotter?
NASA gives Betelgeuse a surface temperature of about 3,300 °C in its 2023 explainer. The cited ESO Antares release describes Antares as a comparatively cool red supergiant but does not provide a matched numerical temperature.
That means the sources support the broad statement that both stars are cool relative to hotter stellar classes, but they do not support a numerical Betelgeuse-versus-Antares temperature ranking. A missing Antares number is not evidence that Antares has no measurable temperature or that it must be cooler.
Which star changes brightness more clearly?
Betelgeuse’s documented cycles
NASA calls Betelgeuse a semiregular variable. Its brightness commonly follows a cycle of roughly 400 days, with another longer variation around five years. “Semiregular” signals that the pattern is not a perfectly repeating clock; the timing and amplitude can vary.

Betelgeuse attracted unusual attention when it faded dramatically in 2019. NASA’s later account links the event to a surface mass ejection: material was expelled from the star, cooled and formed dust that temporarily blocked some of the light reaching observers. The episode is consistent with Betelgeuse’s volatile outer layers, not with a confirmed prediction of imminent core collapse.
What is—and is not—said about Antares
The cited Antares material focuses on motions in the star’s atmosphere rather than supplying a directly comparable brightness cycle. It would be wrong to turn that omission into the statement that Antares is constant or non-variable. The defensible comparison is narrower: Betelgeuse has the better-documented cycle information in these sources, while the Antares release emphasizes atmospheric dynamics.
What did astronomers see in Antares’s atmosphere?
ESO reported that observations with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) mapped Antares’s surface and the motions of gas in its extended atmosphere. The measurements revealed unexpected turbulence. Instead of a simple, quietly expanding shell, the atmosphere contains complex motions that help explain why material can be transported far from the visible surface.

The result matters because mass loss is central to the final evolution of a red supergiant. Keiichi Ohnaka, lead author of the Antares study, described the long-standing problem this way: “How stars like Antares lose mass so quickly in the final phase of their evolution has been a problem for over half a century,”

Betelgeuse’s story in the cited sources is dominated by changing brightness and an observed ejection; Antares’s is illuminated by spatially resolved measurements of surface and atmospheric motion. Neither observation by itself supplies a complete account of how either star will die.
Which star is closer?
The available figures do not justify naming a closer star.
NASA’s 2023 Betelgeuse explainer says the star is about 700 light-years away. A separate NASA observing article published in 2024 gives a rough estimate of about 548 light-years. The difference illustrates that distance values can change with the source, data set and method. The consulted sources do not provide a comparable Antares distance, so there is no like-for-like basis for declaring Betelgeuse or Antares closer.
Distance also affects how apparent size and brightness are interpreted. A star can look prominent because it is intrinsically luminous, relatively nearby, or both. Without matched distances and luminosities for these two stars, visual prominence is not a reliable shortcut to a winner.

Which one is brighter or more luminous?
The cited comparison does not supply a common luminosity measurement for both stars. Brightness as seen from Earth and intrinsic luminosity are different quantities: the first depends on distance and observing conditions, while the second describes the star’s own energy output. Because the source set lacks a matched luminosity table and does not attach a controlled apparent-brightness comparison to both objects, this article does not rank them as brighter or more luminous.

Are either of them about to explode?
Both stars are described in the cited material as late-stage stars expected eventually to become supernovae. “Eventually” is the crucial word. Stellar evolution operates on timescales that do not translate into a reliable human calendar date, and the sources do not predict an imminent explosion for either star.
Betelgeuse’s 2019 fading was caused by a surface mass-ejection event in NASA’s account. It was not presented as evidence that the star had begun an immediately impending supernova. Antares’s turbulent atmosphere likewise demonstrates active mass loss, not a countdown. A red supergiant can be unstable and lose material without astronomers being able to announce that its explosion is near.
What is the new Betelgeuse companion result?
In a 2026 announcement, ESO reported strong evidence that Betelgeuse has a faint companion estimated at roughly two to three solar masses. The announcement raises an important question: gravitational interaction with a companion could influence how the red supergiant has evolved or lost mass. However, ESO states that the companion’s effect on Betelgeuse’s evolution remains an open question.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis finding does not change the basic sky-location or size comparison, and it does not provide a new matched measurement for Antares. It is best understood as an additional piece of Betelgeuse’s history, not as proof that Betelgeuse is more unusual, larger or closer than Antares.
How the two research stories differ
| Star | What the cited observations emphasize | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Betelgeuse | Semiregular brightness cycles; the 2019 surface mass ejection; later recovery; evidence for a faint companion announced in 2026 | Shows a visibly changing, volatile star whose outer activity can affect its observed brightness and whose history may include a companion |
| Antares | VLTI maps of the surface and extended atmosphere, with unexpected turbulence | Shows that atmospheric gas motions and mass loss are complex rather than smoothly behaved |
These are complementary lines of investigation. A brightness record samples how much light reaches us over time; interferometric imaging and spectroscopy can probe where material is moving around the star. Comparing the headlines without comparing the measurement methods can make the stars seem more different—or more alike—than the evidence warrants.
A practical observing comparison
To find Betelgeuse
- Use a seasonal star chart or planisphere set for your date, time and location.
- Locate Orion’s recognizable pattern.
- Identify the orange-red star at the shoulder; that is Betelgeuse.
- Observe its color without assuming that color alone reveals its temperature, distance or size.
To find Antares
- Use the same kind of location-specific chart to determine when Scorpius is visible.
- Find the scorpion-shaped outline of Scorpius.
- Look for the prominent red-orange star in that constellation; that is Antares.
- Compare its appearance with Betelgeuse only as a visual exercise, not as a measurement of which star is intrinsically brighter or larger.
Both can be seen unaided under suitable conditions. Light pollution, haze, the Moon and the star’s altitude can change how strong its color appears, so a casual visual impression should not be treated as a scientific ranking.
Common misconceptions to avoid
- “They are both about 700 Suns wide, so they are exactly the same size.” The figures are rounded estimates from NASA and ESO, not a precision, same-method comparison.
- “Betelgeuse’s 15 solar masses versus Antares’s 12 proves Betelgeuse wins.” The estimates come from different source contexts and are approximate.
- “Antares has no variability because no cycle is listed.” The cited Antares release discusses atmospheric motion, not a direct variability-cycle analysis.
- “The 2019 dimming means Betelgeuse will explode soon.” NASA associates the dimming with a surface mass ejection and does not use it to predict an imminent supernova.
- “The distance is settled at one number.” NASA’s 2023 and 2024 materials give different rough Betelgeuse distances, and the consulted sources do not supply a matched Antares value.
- “A redder-looking star must be larger or closer.” Color, apparent brightness, distance and physical size are separate properties.
So, what is the real difference?
Betelgeuse and Antares are best distinguished by where they are and what astronomers have measured most clearly. Betelgeuse is Orion’s semiregularly variable red supergiant, with documented roughly 400-day and five-year cycles, a 2019 surface-ejection event and a newly reported possible companion. Antares is Scorpius’s red supergiant, whose extended atmosphere has been mapped with the VLTI and found to contain unexpected turbulence.
For size, the responsible answer is “roughly comparable in the cited rounded summaries,” not “one definitely wins.” For mass, NASA’s Betelgeuse estimate is about 15 Suns and ESO’s Antares estimate about 12, but they are not harmonized measurements. For temperature, only Betelgeuse has a numerical value in this source set. For distance and luminosity, the evidence does not support a matched winner. Both are destined, in the broad evolutionary sense, for eventual supernovae; neither source establishes that the event is imminent.
