BETSI addresses a real source of inconsistency in BET surface-area calculations: researchers could select different portions of the same gas-adsorption isotherm and obtain different results. The software applies additional selection criteria to make that choice more consistent. It changes how adsorption data are analyzed, not the measurements themselves.
What the BET method measures
The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) equation estimates a material’s surface area from gas-adsorption data. Introduced in 1938, it remains a widely used benchmark in studies of porous materials, including activated carbons, zeolites and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). BET surface-area estimates are used in research on applications such as catalysis, carbon capture and water harvesting, although surface area alone does not establish how well a material will perform in any of those applications.
To use the equation, an analyst fits a linear region of an adsorption isotherm. The chosen region matters: changing the data points included in the fit can change the calculated surface area.

Choosing the fitting region was not always straightforward. The Rouquerol criteria were developed to help standardize that choice, but Chemistry World reported in 2022 that ambiguity remained. When analysts made different choices, they could report different areas for the same material; manual selection also left room for inconsistent or inflated results.

A Cambridge-led effort compared results from more than 60 laboratories. Chemistry World reported that, in some cases, the calculated values differed by as much as fivefold. That figure describes particular cases—not a general error rate, and not evidence that every BET result is wrong by that amount.
What BETSI changes
The team led by David Fairén Jiménez at the University of Cambridge introduced additional criteria alongside the Rouquerol criteria and built BETSI to apply them. Instead of leaving the fitting-range decision to an analyst’s interpretation, the software implements a defined selection process intended to make assignments unambiguous.

Chemistry World described BETSI as open-access in its 2022 report. That report does not establish the software’s current availability, version or adoption by instrument manufacturers.

Can previously collected data be reanalyzed?
Yes, if the adsorption data needed for the analysis are available: the reported purpose of BETSI includes applying its selection criteria to existing data. Reanalysis changes the data-selection and calculation step, not the experiment already performed. It can therefore help researchers examine whether an earlier reported surface area depended on a different fitting-range choice.

More consistent analyses could make comparisons between laboratories clearer. The Chemistry World report also described possible future use of more consistent BET values in computational and machine-learning models; that is a potential benefit, not an established outcome.

- It addresses analytical discretion. The reported flaw concerns how users choose data to fit the BET equation, not a newly discovered defect in the porous material itself.
- It does not redo measurements. BETSI applies different analysis criteria to adsorption data that have already been collected.
- It does not prove application performance. A more reproducible surface-area estimate is useful for characterization, but it cannot by itself predict a material’s performance in catalysis, carbon capture, water harvesting or another use.
The figures on laboratory variation and BETSI’s reported capabilities here come from Fernando Gomollón-Bel’s Chemistry World report of 25 May 2022, which references a 2022 paper by J. W. M. Osterrieth and coauthors in Advanced Materials (DOI: 10.1002/adma.202201502). The report’s examples show why consistent fitting choices matter; they should not be read as a claim that BET surface-area measurements are universally unreliable.
