The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the strongest pick for phone-camera zoom versatility among the phones covered here: it has dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras, and reviewers favor its reach and flexibility. Choose the iPhone 18 Pro instead if you prefer more natural-looking everyday images, or consider the Google Pixel 10 Pro if its listed zoom specifications fit your needs. A maximum zoom number alone does not tell you how much useful detail a phone will capture.
Best phone camera zoom: the top picks
| Phone | What the cited evidence establishes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra | Dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras; TechRadar’s October 2026 comparison prefers it for zoom photography and versatility. TechRadar; Amateur Photographer | Distant subjects and flexible framing |
| Apple iPhone 18 Pro | TechRadar lists a 4x optical telephoto and favors its more natural-looking everyday images in its comparison. TechRadar | Readers who prioritize natural-looking general photography as well as zoom |
| Google Pixel 10 Pro | AT&T lists a 48 MP telephoto, 4.5x optical zoom and Super Res Zoom up to 30x. Those specifications do not establish that it beats the other phones in image quality. AT&T | A specification-supported alternative; compare real images before choosing |
The Galaxy recommendation is a review judgment, not a universal laboratory ranking. TechRadar’s reviewer Alex Wattanapong wrote, “If I wanted the most versatile zoom shooter, I’d choose the Samsung,” in the October 2026 comparison with the iPhone 18 Pro. TechRadar also preferred the iPhone for more natural-looking everyday shots. Those conclusions can coexist: zoom reach and image-rendering preference are different buying criteria.
Why the Galaxy S26 Ultra stands out for zoom
The Galaxy S26 Ultra has two dedicated telephoto positions, 3x and 5x, according to Amateur Photographer’s April 2026 comparison. Having both gives you more native framing choices than a phone with just one telephoto camera. TechRadar’s October 2026 comparison likewise describes Samsung’s additional 3x telephoto alongside its 5x optical telephoto as a source of versatility.

In Amateur Photographer’s comparison example, the S26 Ultra’s 10x optical-quality crop showed more detail than the iPhone 17 Pro’s 8x optical-quality crop. That is a result from the tested example, not a guarantee for every subject, lighting condition, or scene. The article compares the S26 Ultra with the iPhone 17 Pro, so its iPhone findings should not be treated as a test of the newer iPhone 18 Pro.

Android Central discusses the S26 Ultra’s zoom clarity beyond 5x and shows high-magnification examples. That does not make every extreme-zoom image suitable for demanding use, nor does it mean the advertised maximum is optical zoom. Read Android Central’s camera review.
Optical zoom, sensor crops, and digital zoom explained
Dedicated optical telephoto
A telephoto camera uses a lens with a longer native focal length than the phone’s main camera. It provides a distinct framing position—such as 3x, 4x, or 5x—without relying solely on enlarging a crop from the main camera. The listed magnification is a useful starting point, but it does not by itself predict detail or color in the final image.

Optical-quality crop
An “optical-quality” zoom step can use a high-resolution sensor crop to offer an intermediate view. It is not another fixed telephoto lens. TechRadar explicitly distinguishes the cited optical-quality positions on the iPhone and Samsung from fixed focal lengths. Treat such steps as additional framing options, not as extra cameras.
Digital and extreme zoom
Software can extend magnification beyond a phone’s native telephoto view, but enlarging an image does not create detail the camera did not capture. Amateur Photographer says the longest digital-zoom images in its iPhone 17 Pro and S26 Ultra comparison were not suitable for serious use. The largest number printed in a specification is therefore not a reliable measure of useful long-range quality.

How to choose the right zoom phone
- Start with the distance and subjects you photograph. For wildlife, performances, or other distant subjects, look for multiple dedicated telephoto cameras and consider where their native framing positions fall. Samsung’s cited 3x and 5x positions provide two such choices.
- Decide whether you need reach or a particular rendering style. TechRadar describes the iPhone 18 Pro’s images as more natural-looking and Samsung’s as more vibrant or stylized in its comparison. If possible, inspect sample images of familiar subjects; specifications cannot determine which processing style you will prefer.
- Separate a lens from a crop step. Count dedicated telephoto cameras as native optical positions. Treat sensor-crop or software zoom steps as useful extras whose detail may depend on the scene.
- Look beyond the maximum zoom claim. Consider whether reviews show clear results at the ranges you expect to use. A high advertised maximum does not establish that the image will retain enough detail for your purpose.
- Match the evidence to the question. A specification listing tells you what hardware or zoom modes a manufacturer or carrier lists. A hands-on comparison can describe how phones performed in the scenes tested, but its outcome is still scene-specific and may apply to a different phone generation.
What the comparisons do—and do not—show
The October 2026 TechRadar comparison directly addresses the iPhone 18 Pro and Galaxy S26 Ultra. It favors Samsung for zoom reach and versatility while favoring iPhone for more natural-looking everyday images. Amateur Photographer’s April 17, 2026 hands-on comparison tested varied scenes and favored the S26 Ultra overall, while reporting good performance from both phones; its Apple comparison device was the iPhone 17 Pro. These are reviewer assessments, not controlled rankings that settle every scene or personal preference.
For the Pixel 10 Pro, the cited AT&T comparison page supports the listed telephoto and zoom specifications, but it is not an independent head-to-head image-quality test against Samsung or Apple. The available evidence therefore supports including the Pixel as a hardware alternative, not calling it the overall zoom winner.
