If you want another game like Planet Zoo 2, start with Planet Zoo: it is the closest documented match for modern wildlife, habitat construction, terrain shaping and creative building. Choose Prehistoric Kingdom for extinct animals and deeper logistics, Let’s Build a Zoo for a different management-first presentation, or Jurassic World Evolution 3 for dinosaur breeding and operational park management.

The right choice depends on what you want to keep from Planet Zoo 2. The sequel’s documented baseline includes more than 130 animals, including flying birds and fully aquatic species, guest needs, blueprint and piece-by-piece construction, conservation projects and customizable Wildlife Reserves. A PC Gamer review dated October 13, 2026 awarded it 60/100, praising the new fish, birds and reserves while calling some career objectives mundane and the creation tools fiddly. As contributor Rick Lane put it: “The animals are superstars, but they don’t quite make up for the fiddly, frustrating micromanagement.”

  • Want the same modern-wildlife zoo loop? Pick Planet Zoo.
  • Want extinct species, trains and supply logistics? Pick Prehistoric Kingdom, while remembering that it remains in Early Access.
  • Want zoo management in a noticeably different format? Try Let’s Build a Zoo. Its official description establishes zoo management and animal breeding, but does not establish that it is easier or less complex.
  • Want dinosaurs, DNA research and a more operations-focused park? Pick Jurassic World Evolution 3.

These are not interchangeable substitutes. They divide along five useful axes: animal theme, construction freedom, management intensity, progression modes and development status.

Planet Zoo: the closest documented match

Planet Zoo is the safest recommendation when your favorite parts of Planet Zoo 2 are living modern animals, naturalistic habitats and the freedom to build detailed spaces. It keeps the same broad identity instead of replacing a wildlife zoo with a dinosaur park or a more abstract management format.

Why it feels familiar

The documented overlap is unusually direct: animal simulation, habitat construction, terrain shaping and extensive creative building. If you enjoy sculpting hills, laying paths around viewing areas and designing enclosures around animal behavior, those are the systems to prioritize. The game is therefore a better fit than a title that only shares the word “zoo” but changes the main fantasy.

What you give up

The available comparison does not establish every feature of the sequel as present in the original. In particular, do not assume that Planet Zoo includes the sequel’s complete animal roster, flying birds, fully aquatic species or customizable Wildlife Reserves. Treat it as the closest documented match to the core loop, not as a guaranteed replacement for every sequel feature.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if construction and habitat design matter more than a new theme.
  • Choose it if you want modern wildlife rather than extinct animals or dinosaurs.
  • Choose it if you would rather learn a familiar style of simulation than adapt to a different management model.

It is the best answer to “What games are like Planet Zoo 2?” when “like” means the same kind of wildlife park, not merely another game with animals.

Prehistoric Kingdom: extinct species with a logistics layer

Prehistoric Kingdom changes the fantasy from conserving living wildlife to discovering, incubating and releasing extinct species. Steam’s developer-authored description presents it as a park-management zoo in which you must meet the demands of guests, staff and animals while operating the infrastructure that keeps the park supplied.

The systems that make it different

  • Extinct-animal focus: the collection centers on prehistoric species rather than modern zoo animals.
  • Construction: you can shape terrain and build piece by piece.
  • Logistics: resource delivery is part of the simulation, with trainable staff moving supplies through infrastructure that you construct.
  • Sharing: Steam Workshop support lets players share creations.
  • Modes: Challenge and Sandbox are documented options.

That logistics layer is the key reason to choose it after Planet Zoo 2. A player who wants more than visual habitat design can manage deliveries and staff movement as an explicit operational problem. Conversely, someone seeking a low-friction creative builder may find the supply chain adds work rather than removing it.

  • Build your own Jurassic World like never before. Nurture generations of awe-inspiring dinosaurs with the series debut of juveniles, create and manage sprawling prehistoric parks around the globe, and let your imagination roar with powerful new creative options.

Early Access and release timing

Prehistoric Kingdom is still in Early Access. In a 2026 developer update, the team said it was working on Update 18 and aiming for a full release with Update 19, currently scheduled for 2027. That is a target, not a completed release date. Expect the game’s feature set and balance to change before then, and check the current storefront description before buying.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it for extinct animals and a park that must be supplied as well as designed.
  • Choose Challenge if you want constraints and resource pressure.
  • Choose Sandbox if you primarily want to experiment with terrain and construction.
  • Wait or buy cautiously if you require a finished, stable feature set today.

The developers list 80 species in their 2026 Update 18 information. That number is tied to that update context and should not be treated as a permanent final roster.

Let’s Build a Zoo: a different management-first presentation

Let’s Build a Zoo belongs on this list because its official description clearly identifies it as a zoo-management simulator and emphasizes animal breeding. The available material associates it with Steam and Xbox. It does not establish a reliable ranking for its building depth, difficulty or overall system complexity.

Why it may suit a Planet Zoo 2 player

If your favorite part of a zoo game is deciding which animals to acquire, breed and display, a management-first structure can provide a fresh rhythm after a large construction sandbox. You approach the zoo as an operating organization: the animal collection and its growth are central, while the presentation differs from the highly detailed habitat-building identity of the Planet Zoo series.

What cannot be promised

It would be misleading to label Let’s Build a Zoo “the simple option” solely because it looks different. The available description does not prove that it has fewer systems, easier objectives or less construction complexity. Check current gameplay footage and the local store description if difficulty or building freedom is your deciding factor.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it when you want breeding and day-to-day zoo management presented differently.
  • Choose it when a new visual and structural format matters more than reproducing Planet Zoo 2’s construction tools.
  • Do not choose it on the assumption that it is automatically less complicated; that comparison is not established.

Jurassic World Evolution 3: dinosaur breeding and operational management

Jurassic World Evolution 3 is the strongest alternative if your priority is running a prehistoric attraction rather than a modern wildlife reserve. TechRadar’s 2025 review describes a management simulation with custom buildings and scenery, Campaign, Challenge and Sandbox modes, and 70 dinosaur species.

Jurassic World Evolution 3 (Xbox Series X)
  • The next entry in the award-winning series, Jurassic World Evolution 3 puts you in control of building and running your very own Jurassic World.
  • Nurture Generations of Dinosaurs - With over 80 awe-inspiring pre-historic species, 75 of which allow you to manage, breed and nurture families of dinosaurs across entire generations. Rear them from playful juveniles into awe-inspiring adults, each with distinct female, male, and juvenile variants. Park guests will marvel as these majestic creatures socialise and react to the vibrant world around them.
  • Creativity Evolved - Create jaw-dropping parks with new creative tools never before seen in the Jurassic World Evolution series! From groundbreaking terrain editing to modular scenery customisation – build and tweak every aspect of your park from the ground up.
  • Epic Globetrotting Campaign - Join familiar faces from the Jurassic franchise, including Dr. Ian Malcolm (voiced by Jeff Goldblum) and embark on a non-linear campaign across a sprawling world map filled with iconic locations such as the Montana Badlands, and new locations such as Japan—each offering thrilling new challenges.
  • Control the Chaos - Set your site up to run as efficiently as possible with powerful and accessible park management tools provide control over your park’s operations. But chaos is the only certainty, so prepare for disaster using new security cameras that will help automate the response to escaped dinosaurs and deploy your Maintenance team to keep threats contained by delivering critical repairs across the site.

How its progression works

  1. Hire scientists to operate the research side of the park.
  2. Send expeditions to recover fossils.
  3. Extract DNA from those fossils.
  4. Select traits when developing the genome.
  5. Incubate the resulting dinosaurs.
  6. Release them into exhibits and balance their needs against guest and park requirements.

This chain gives the game a clear research-to-exhibit progression. It is more explicitly about breeding and operating a specialized park than about simulating a broad modern ecosystem.

Where management is more demanding

TechRadar’s review says management is more central than in Planet Zoo. You are not only designing scenery; you are coordinating scientists, expeditions, genomes, incubation and dinosaur welfare. The same review warns that repeated timers and balancing dinosaur needs can feel like busywork. That matters if you are leaving Planet Zoo 2 because its micromanagement already feels frustrating: the theme changes, but the operational workload does not disappear.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if dinosaurs are the main attraction you want to manage.
  • Choose it if Campaign, Challenge and Sandbox modes are important to your play style.
  • Choose it if research, fossil expeditions and trait selection sound more engaging than modern-animal conservation.
  • Look elsewhere if your primary goal is freeform wildlife habitat construction with minimal timers.

Which alternative is less complicated than Planet Zoo 2?

No reliable evidence in the available material proves that one of these games is universally simpler. “Less complicated” can mean fewer construction tools, fewer operational systems, a gentler campaign or simply a presentation that is easier to read.

If you mean… Best starting point Why Important qualification
Fewer unfamiliar themes Planet Zoo It retains the modern-wildlife identity and familiar habitat-building loop It is not documented as having every sequel feature
Less emphasis on detailed construction Let’s Build a Zoo may be worth investigating Its official positioning is management-first and breeding-focused Building depth and difficulty are not established; do not assume simplicity
More visible operational logistics Prehistoric Kingdom Resources, staff delivery and infrastructure are explicit systems Those systems can make it feel more complex, not less
A focused breeding pipeline Jurassic World Evolution 3 Fossils, DNA, traits and incubation give progression a clear structure Reviewers report timer-driven busywork and demanding dinosaur-needs balancing

If you want fewer decisions, the evidence does not justify a definitive winner. If you want a different kind of decision-making, each game offers a clear direction: familiar wildlife construction, prehistoric logistics, breeding-led management or dinosaur operations.

How the alternatives compare with Planet Zoo 2’s documented feature set

Planet Zoo 2 is pitched around more than 130 animals, including flying birds and fully aquatic species, plus guest needs, blueprint and piece-by-piece construction, conservation projects and customizable Wildlife Reserves. Those features establish why players may be looking elsewhere: a broad feature set can also create more interfaces, objectives and micromanagement.

Planet Zoo is the closest match to the underlying wildlife-and-building identity. Prehistoric Kingdom replaces living wildlife with extinct species and adds a stated logistics focus. Let’s Build a Zoo changes the presentation toward management and breeding, but the available information is not detailed enough to rank its complexity. Jurassic World Evolution 3 narrows the animal theme to dinosaurs and makes research and park operations more central.

Jurassic World Evolution 2 (PS4)
  • Immerse yourself in a compelling and original Jurassic World narrative set after the Earth-shattering events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
  • Take control with deeper management tools and creative options. Construct and customise new buildings and flex your managerial muscle across never-before-seen locations ranging from dense forests to rocky deserts.
  • Chaos Theory mode lets you play through key moments of your favourite films - with a twist. Experience "what-if" scenarios from iconic Jurassic World and Jurassic Park films, with each level set across eras and locations from all five movies.

The PC Gamer review’s 60/100 score is a reviewer’s evaluation, not a universal measurement. Its criticism of fiddly creation tools and mundane career objectives is useful when deciding what to avoid, but your priorities still matter: a player who values new aquatic and flying animals may rate the sequel differently from one who wants streamlined objectives.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Name the animal fantasy. Select modern wildlife, extinct species or dinosaurs before comparing interfaces.
  2. Decide whether building or operations come first. Habitat design points toward Planet Zoo; logistics points toward Prehistoric Kingdom; research and breeding point toward Jurassic World Evolution 3.
  3. Separate “different” from “easier.” A new presentation, such as Let’s Build a Zoo, is not proof of lower complexity.
  4. Choose your progression style. Challenge and Sandbox are documented for Prehistoric Kingdom; Campaign, Challenge and Sandbox are documented for Jurassic World Evolution 3.
  5. Check development status. Treat Prehistoric Kingdom as Early Access and account for its stated 2027 Update 19 full-release target.
  6. Verify the current store listing. Platform, edition, regional price and availability can change, so confirm them locally before purchase.

Buying and availability notes

Use your local storefront to verify the current platform, edition, price and availability for any game on this list. Those details vary by region and can change after publication. Do not assume that a listing on one storefront proves availability in another.

For Prehistoric Kingdom, the Early Access label and the developer’s stated Update 19 target in 2027 are material purchasing conditions. A full-release target is not a guarantee, so buy only if the current Early Access state suits you.

Before using an Amazon listing or any other retailer link, verify that the listing is live in your target region. Inventory, regional pricing and referral terms are not established here.
