The closest alternative depends on the constraint you refuse to compromise. If you need six 3.5-inch SATA bays, start with the UGREEN NASync DXP5800 Pro. If built-in 10GbE matters more than bay count, the four-bay UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Pro is the more direct fit. Synology and QNAP deserve consideration when a mature appliance ecosystem is more important than open-ended hardware tinkering; Asustor and TerraMaster add other six- or four-bay choices. None is a universal winner, and the figures below are model specifications and review-time observations rather than a controlled, same-lab performance test.
Use the standard ZimaCube 2 as the baseline, not the separate Pro configuration. Its documented six SATA bays, four M.2 NVMe slots, dual 2.5GbE, two Thunderbolt 4 ports and PCIe expansion make it unusually expandable for a home system. The practical decision is therefore a balance of drive capacity, network speed, memory headroom, expansion, software maturity and the time you want to spend administering the box.
What the standard ZimaCube 2 actually offers
Before comparing alternatives, identify the exact ZimaCube 2 SKU. ZimaSpace lists the standard family hardware with six SATA bays, four M.2 NVMe drive slots, two 2.5GbE ports, two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a PCIe expansion interface. The Pro is listed as a different configuration, so a feature found on a Pro listing should not be assumed to be included on the standard model.
A TechRadar review identifies the reviewed ZimaCube 2 as using an Intel Core i3-1215U, 8GB of LPDDR5 memory, a 256GB internal SSD and ZimaOS 1.61. That review states a 32GB memory maximum. Treat that ceiling, firmware version and supported drive capacities as time-sensitive: check the current product page and manual for the precise SKU you are buying.

The 10GbE distinction
The standard model has dual 2.5GbE in the official hardware documentation. A separate review notes that it does not provide native 10GbE and would need an add-in network card for a true 10GbE connection. The PCIe slot is therefore part of the networking plan, not merely a future upgrade option. Confirm the slot’s lane allocation, card length and clearance, cooling, driver support and operating-system compatibility before selecting a NIC.
What that baseline means in practice
- Six SATA bays give the standard unit a larger expansion path than four- and five-bay alternatives, especially when you want separate disks for data, parity and future growth.
- Four M.2 positions can serve cache, application storage or another supported storage role, but the usable role depends on ZimaOS and the SSDs you install. Do not assume every M.2 slot can be pooled into the same array as the SATA bays.
- Thunderbolt 4 is useful for fast direct-attached workflows and compatible peripherals, while 2.5GbE is the normal path to a wired home network.
- The Core i3 platform and 8GB starting memory are reasonable for file services and light containers, but virtual machines, databases, media indexing and many simultaneous services make memory capacity and upgradeability important.

UGREEN NASync DXP5800 Pro: the closest six-bay substitute
The DXP5800 Pro is the most direct named alternative when your first requirement is retaining six SATA bays. TechRadar reports dual 10GbE, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, 8GB of RAM, two Gen4 M.2 slots and one PCIe x4 slot. That combination moves the network connection from the ZimaCube 2’s 2.5GbE baseline to 10GbE without consuming the expansion slot, while preserving six bays for bulk storage.
Why it fits a storage-heavy home lab
Six bays let you begin with a smaller set of disks and add capacity later without immediately replacing the chassis. The PCIe slot remains available for another adapter, subject to lane and driver support, and the M.2 positions can be assigned to workloads that benefit from SSD latency. For containers, build servers or self-hosted applications, the important comparison is not just CPU branding: check how much memory is installed, whether it can be expanded, and which virtualization or container features the current OS release exposes.
What to verify before purchase
- The review quoted a price of $1,027.99 at the time it was written. It is not a current quotation and may not include disks, memory upgrades or tax.
- Confirm whether the listing is the Pro model and whether it includes the advertised RAM configuration.
- Check that your switch, cabling and client devices support 10GbE; otherwise the extra ports will negotiate at a lower speed.
- Read the current UGOS Pro release notes for backup, container and virtual-machine features you actually need.
Choose this model when bay count and an immediately fast network are both non-negotiable. Choose a different model if the appeal of the ZimaCube 2 is specifically its open, low-friction ability to install and experiment with alternative operating systems.
UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Pro: four bays with native 10GbE
The DXP4800 Pro gives up two SATA bays in exchange for a compact, network-forward configuration. TechRadar reports an Intel Core i3-1315U, 8GB of DDR5 memory expandable to 96GB, four SATA bays, two Gen4 x4 M.2 slots, 10GbE plus 2.5GbE and UGOS Pro.
When four bays are enough
Four bays can be practical for a mirrored pair plus a second mirrored pair, or for a small parity array when your capacity target is modest. It is not a capacity equivalent to a six-bay chassis: adding a fifth or sixth disk later is impossible without changing the enclosure or replacing existing disks. Model your usable capacity, redundancy level and three-year growth before treating the lower bay count as a saving.

Why the memory ceiling matters
A stated expansion path to 96GB gives this model more headroom for virtual machines, multiple containers, indexing and development services than an 8GB-only appliance. Memory expansion still requires compatible modules, access to the sockets and an operating system that can use the installed amount. Verify those details in the current manual rather than assuming the review configuration applies to every regional SKU.
Network trade-off
Native 10GbE avoids buying a PCIe NIC, but it does not guarantee 10Gb/s file transfers. The switch, client adapter, cable category, protocol overhead, disk array and workload all become limiting factors. A single hard drive, encrypted workload or many small files can run far below link speed.
Synology DiskStation DS1525+: five bays and a mature appliance approach
The DS1525+ is a five-bay comparison point for buyers who put DSM’s administration and application ecosystem ahead of maximum hardware openness. TechRadar’s ZimaCube review describes two 2.5GbE ports and a proprietary PCIe slot on this model.
Where it differs from an expandable homelab platform
DSM is designed to make routine jobs—user accounts, shared folders, backup tasks, snapshots and photo workflows—approachable for a household. That can reduce maintenance time compared with an enthusiast-oriented setup. The trade-off is that proprietary expansion and compatibility policies may constrain the disks, M.2 devices or adapters you can use.

Drive and M.2 compatibility rules change with hardware revisions and DSM releases. Check the current compatibility list for the exact DS1525+ model, the capacity and firmware of each drive, and the intended SSD role. If your plan depends on a particular third-party NIC, memory module or NVMe cache arrangement, confirm it is supported before ordering.
This is the better direction for a household that wants guided administration and integrated applications. It is less compelling when your main requirement is experimenting with many operating systems, custom PCIe cards or unusual storage layouts.
Asustor Lockerstor 6 Gen3 AS6806T: six bays with a 10GbE upgrade path
TechRadar describes the Lockerstor 6 Gen3 AS6806T with six bays, four M.2 slots and 2.5GbE ports, with 10GbE available through PCIe expansion. It is therefore closer to the ZimaCube 2 in bay count and M.2 quantity than the four- and five-bay choices, but its fast-networking path requires an add-in card.

Who should consider it
Choose this route if six-bay growth is essential and your network can remain at 2.5GbE initially while you budget for a supported 10GbE adapter. The four M.2 positions may suit an SSD-heavy application layout, subject to the current operating-system rules and thermal limits.
Price and availability caution
The review characterizes the price as high, but does not establish a current market price. Treat that observation as historical context only. Compare the complete system cost—chassis, disks, memory, adapter, switch and backup target—against the six-bay UGREEN option and the standard ZimaCube 2 rather than comparing empty-chassis prices.
TerraMaster and QNAP four-bay systems
Four-bay TerraMaster and QNAP models can be sensible when a specific CPU, software feature or local price outweighs the loss of two drive positions. The exact hardware varies widely by model, so a brand-level recommendation would be misleading.
TerraMaster’s article dated July 16, 2026 compares its F4 systems with the Synology DS923+, QNAP TS-462 and UGREEN DXP4800 Plus. Treat the specifications as TerraMaster’s published comparison table and any value or performance conclusions as the manufacturer’s perspective, not as an independent benchmark. Verify the exact F4 model, network ports, M.2 support, transcoding capability, memory limits and TOS version.
For QNAP, compare QTS or QuTS hero requirements with your intended workloads. Features such as snapshots, containers, virtualization, ZFS memory needs and supported expansion cards differ by model. A four-bay QNAP may be a strong appliance choice, but it is not a like-for-like replacement for six SATA bays.

Bulk storage, media and backups
Start with usable capacity and redundancy. List the number and size of existing disks, the replacement cycle, the amount of data added each month and the backup copy you will maintain. Six bays provide more room for staged expansion; five bays sit between the two extremes; four bays can be sufficient when data growth is predictable.
Do not count M.2 slots as automatic substitutes for SATA bays. An M.2 drive may be reserved for cache, applications or a separate volume, and some systems limit which SSDs are supported for pools. Confirm the role in the vendor documentation before using M.2 capacity in your calculation.

Containers, virtual machines and development
Compare memory ceiling, CPU generation, PCIe access and operating-system flexibility. A system that starts with 8GB may run a few lightweight services, but databases, Kubernetes nodes, build workers and desktop virtual machines consume memory quickly. The DXP4800 Pro’s reported 96GB ceiling is attractive for experimentation; the ZimaCube 2 review’s stated 32GB maximum may be adequate for lighter homelabs but leaves less room for growth.
Ask four practical questions: Can you install the hypervisor or container runtime you prefer? Are drivers available for the network and storage controllers? Can you recover the system if an update breaks a service? Is the memory upgrade documented and covered by warranty? Reviewer reports that ZimaOS or third-party systems can be installed describe observed possibilities, not a guarantee of vendor support for every combination.

Family administration and photo workflows
If several people need reliable file sharing, phone-photo backup and account-level permissions, software maturity may matter more than PCIe lanes. DSM, QTS/QuTS, UGOS Pro, TOS and ZimaOS take different approaches to applications, updates and support. Make a short list of the exact apps you need—backup clients, photo indexing, sync, media serving and password-protected sharing—and verify availability for the current version. A broad app count is not a substitute for confirming your workflow.
Plan the network before paying for 10GbE
Native 10GbE is valuable only when the rest of the path can use it. Inventory the NAS port, switch, router, client adapters and cabling. A 10GbE NAS connected to a 2.5GbE switch will negotiate down; a fast switch connected to an older client will not make that client faster.
- Draw the path from each heavy-use client to the NAS, including every switch and adapter.
- Mark each link as 1GbE, 2.5GbE or 10GbE and check the cable and transceiver requirements.
- Separate bulk sequential transfers from small-file, encrypted or multi-user workloads; they stress the system differently.
- Decide whether you need 10GbE now or only an upgrade path. An add-in card may be cheaper than replacing a switch, while an onboard port avoids occupying a PCIe slot.
- Test the network after installation with your real clients and storage pool. Do not infer a guaranteed speed from the port label.
The reviewed material does not establish a universal home-network performance gain for any alternative. Treat 10GbE as a capacity and workflow decision, not a promise of a particular copy time.

Assuming every M.2 slot is interchangeable
Slots can differ in PCIe generation, lane width, heatsink clearance and supported roles. Install only SSDs listed as compatible, update firmware as directed and confirm whether the operating system treats them as cache, a separate pool or boot media.
Adding a NIC without checking the platform
For a ZimaCube 2 or another model that relies on PCIe for 10GbE, verify lane allocation, physical clearance, cooling and driver support. Keep the original network configuration available so you can remove the card and regain access if the driver fails.
Confusing redundancy with backup
RAID or another storage pool can keep services online after a disk failure, but it does not protect against deletion, ransomware, fire or a failed enclosure. Maintain a second copy and test restoring a file before trusting the arrangement.
Treating vendor comparisons as benchmarks
TerraMaster’s July 2026 comparison is useful for the specifications it publishes, but its value judgments represent the vendor’s perspective. Likewise, reviews report their own configurations and dates. Do not convert a feature list into a claim that one system is universally faster.
A practical selection matrix

Installation checklist for any replacement
- Record the current ZimaCube 2 shares, users, permissions, containers, virtual machines and backup jobs before moving data.
- Choose the redundancy layout and calculate usable capacity with the smallest disk in the set.
- Confirm each drive, M.2 SSD, memory module and expansion card against the current compatibility documentation.
- Update the NAS firmware and operating system before loading production data, while retaining a recovery method and configuration export.
- Create administrator and ordinary-user accounts separately; disable or rename default credentials where the platform allows it.
- Connect the NAS to an uninterruptible power supply if an interrupted write could damage the pool or services.
- Copy a representative data set, test permissions from each household account and measure transfers from the clients that matter.
- Configure an external backup and perform a restore test, including a large file, many small files and application data.
- Document the final drive order, network addresses, expansion cards, OS version and recovery steps.
Final recommendation by buyer type
Pick the UGREEN NASync DXP5800 Pro when six SATA bays and native 10GbE are the defining requirements. Pick the UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Pro when four bays are enough and memory expansion plus onboard 10GbE are more valuable than capacity growth. Pick the Synology DS1525+ when DSM’s guided administration and household applications outweigh proprietary expansion constraints. Consider the Asustor six-bay model when you want six bays and can add 10GbE later. Evaluate TerraMaster or QNAP four-bay systems only after matching an exact model’s software and hardware to your workload.
The standard ZimaCube 2 remains sensible when four M.2 slots, dual Thunderbolt 4, six SATA bays and an open homelab approach matter more than built-in 10GbE. Its network limitation can be addressed with a compatible PCIe card, but that solution requires checking lanes, clearance and drivers. Whichever direction you choose, verify the exact SKU, current firmware, live price, regional availability and compatibility list immediately before committing.
