Start with TUNIC if you want the closest modern interpretation of Zelda’s exploration, dungeons, secrets, and item-driven puzzles. Choose Death’s Door for a tighter, combat-first adventure with dark humor, or CrossCode for the longest and most puzzle-heavy 2D action-RPG experience. All three are available for PC through Steam, while Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King, Hyper Light Drifter, and Anodyne 2 are worthwhile secondary options to check.
Quick answer: which Zelda-like PC RPG should you play?
“Zelda-like” covers several different experiences: interconnected maps with shortcuts, dungeon rooms that teach a new item, real-time swordplay, environmental puzzles, secrets hidden off the main path, and a steady stream of upgrades. No single indie RPG reproduces every Zelda era equally well, so the right choice depends on which part of the formula you miss most.
| Game | Best match for | Exploration and world | Dungeons and puzzles | Combat | Progression | Tone and presentation | Commitment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TUNIC | Mystery, secrets, and manual-driven discovery | Highly interconnected, with environmental clues and hidden routes | Dense dungeon-like areas and secret puzzles | Action combat built around positioning, timing, and discovered tools | Items and abilities open new solutions and areas | Isometric fox adventure with an intentionally enigmatic presentation | Focused adventure whose depth comes from optional discoveries |
| Death’s Door | Focused combat and dark humor | Compact areas designed around exploration and secrets | Strong dungeon-delving feel without an oversized world | Fast melee attacks supported by arrows and magic | Character-stat customization, upgrades, weapons, and abilities | Darkly comic story with stylized fantasy presentation | Streamlined action adventure |
| CrossCode | A longer, puzzle-heavy 2D action RPG | Large RPG structure with repeated returns to explored spaces | Very high puzzle density and elaborate dungeon challenges | Fast-paced ranged and real-time action | Substantial RPG progression and item-driven problem solving | 16-bit SNES-style visuals in a science-fiction setting | Deepest and most demanding commitment of the three |
The table is a decision guide rather than a scorecard. TUNIC is the most distinctive Zelda-like in structure and mystery; Death’s Door concentrates the dungeon-and-boss rhythm into a more direct package; CrossCode expands the formula into a broad science-fiction RPG with extensive puzzle solving.
TUNIC: the best choice for secrets, mystery, and discovery
TUNIC was released for PC on 16 March 2022 by TUNIC Team and published by Finji. Steam classifies it as an Action, Adventure, and RPG title. You play an isometric fox exploring a world filled with hidden treasures, combat encounters, puzzles, and large boss fights.

Why it feels like Zelda
TUNIC’s strongest connection to Zelda is its interconnected exploration. Paths loop back on themselves, landmarks hint at places you cannot yet reach, and newly discovered items change how you interpret earlier rooms. Dungeon-like areas contain combat, environmental puzzles, and optional secrets rather than functioning as isolated stages.
Item discovery matters because it is both a practical upgrade and a clue about the world’s logic. The game expects you to notice visual details, test possibilities, and remember locations that looked incomplete. That makes exploration feel investigative instead of checklist-driven.
The instruction manual is the central hook
Instead of giving you a fully readable tutorial, TUNIC gradually reconstructs an in-game instruction manual. Its pages contain maps, diagrams, hints, and rules, but parts of the text are initially unreadable. You learn by comparing symbols, illustrations, room layouts, and your own observations.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This manual changes the nature of progression. A page can reveal a combat technique, explain a system, point toward a secret, or make an earlier area suddenly meaningful. The most satisfying discoveries often come from understanding information you already collected rather than merely receiving a stronger weapon.
Combat, bosses, and challenge
Combat is real-time and built around movement, attack timing, defensive positioning, and the tools you uncover. Bosses provide the major tests, but ordinary encounters also matter because they force you to read enemy behavior while navigating limited space. The result is an adventure that asks for attention without reducing every problem to numerical character statistics.
Its challenge is closely tied to observation. If a route, puzzle, or combat rule seems opaque, the manual and environment often contain the missing clue. Treating every unexplained symbol as potentially useful is more productive than rushing from objective to objective.
Who should choose TUNIC?
- Choose it if you enjoy finding shortcuts, interpreting maps, and uncovering secrets without explicit instructions.
- Choose it if you want a modern indie game that captures the feeling of opening a classic adventure manual and slowly decoding it.
- Choose it if exploration and mystery matter more to you than a conventional, heavily narrated story.
- Expect to spend time examining pages, testing ideas, and revisiting places that seemed finished.
Steam states that TUNIC on PC is best experienced with a gamepad or controller. A PC gamepad or wired controller is therefore the most natural hardware pairing, especially for players who prefer analog movement and face-button combat.

Death’s Door: the best combat-led Zelda-like
Death’s Door launched on 20 July 2021 from Acid Nerve and was published by Devolver Digital. Steam describes it as an action adventure with melee weapons, arrows, magic, character-stat customization, upgrades, exploration, secrets, colossal bosses, and a darkly comic story.
A compact dungeon-delving structure
Death’s Door is designed around momentum. You move through distinct areas, fight through groups of enemies, search for hidden paths, and confront bosses that anchor the adventure. Its world is not presented as an enormous sandbox; instead, each location supports a clear rhythm of traversal, combat, discovery, and escalation.
That structure is ideal if what you remember most about classic Zelda is the satisfaction of entering a dungeon, learning its spaces, finding useful tools, and reaching a memorable boss. Steam-hosted IGN copy calls it “a must for those looking to scratch the itch of a classic Zelda dungeon-delving game.”
Fast melee action with ranged and magical options
Melee weapons provide the core of combat, while arrows and magic give you ways to control distance and respond to different enemy patterns. Character-stat customization and upgrades let you refine the way your character handles encounters instead of relying on a single fixed attack string.
The combat is more immediate than TUNIC’s investigative pacing. You are constantly reading attack ranges, choosing when to commit, and using the arena around you. Bosses are colossal set pieces, but the ordinary fights are meaningful because they reinforce the same movement and timing skills.
Dark humor instead of solemn fantasy
The story uses a darkly comic tone. That contrast keeps the adventure from becoming relentlessly grim: dangerous spaces and enormous bosses coexist with characters and situations that undercut the drama. If you want a Zelda-like that treats dungeon danger with a mischievous sense of humor, Death’s Door is the strongest match in this group.
Who should choose Death’s Door?
- Choose it if combat is your priority and you want a responsive melee-led adventure.
- Choose it if you prefer a focused sequence of areas to a sprawling, heavily layered world.
- Choose it if you want boss encounters, secrets, upgrades, and dungeon energy without a large RPG ruleset.
- Choose it if a darkly comic story sounds more appealing than TUNIC’s mostly wordless mystery or CrossCode’s science-fiction narrative.
CrossCode: the best long-form, puzzle-heavy alternative
CrossCode was released on 20 September 2018 by Radical Fish Games and published by Deck13, WhisperGames, DANGEN Entertainment, and Mayflower Entertainment. Steam describes it as a retro-inspired 2D action RPG with 16-bit SNES-style graphics, fast-paced combat, engaging puzzle mechanics, and a science-fiction story.

A Zelda-like formula expanded into a full RPG
CrossCode uses the familiar top-down action-adventure foundation—real-time combat, dungeon puzzles, exploration, and item-driven solutions—but gives it a much larger RPG framework. Progression is substantial, and the game repeatedly asks you to combine movement, attacks, ranged actions, and environmental interactions.

Instead of treating each dungeon as a self-contained lesson, CrossCode returns to its systems again and again, layering more demanding puzzles and combat situations onto what you have learned. Players who want a brief, concentrated adventure may find that structure demanding; players who enjoy sustained progression will find more to master.
Puzzles are the main attraction
CrossCode’s puzzles are not occasional interruptions between battles. They are a defining part of the experience. Rooms often test timing, positioning, range, and the interaction between your abilities and the environment. Solving them requires experimentation and spatial reasoning rather than simply locating a key.
The repeated puzzle-solving makes CrossCode the best recommendation for readers who consider Zelda’s dungeons the primary appeal. Its science-fiction setting also lets it depart from familiar fantasy objects and aesthetics while preserving the same satisfaction of using a newly understood ability to solve a previously impossible problem.
Fast-paced combat and ranged action
Combat is quick and responsive, with ranged attacks playing a major role alongside close-range actions. Encounters reward movement and rapid decisions, while the RPG structure gives you more progression systems to manage than in Death’s Door or TUNIC.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The combination of action combat and elaborate puzzles means that CrossCode can feel mentally and mechanically busy. It is the right pick when you want your Zelda-like to occupy a substantial place in your PC library rather than serve as a short palate cleanser.
Who should choose CrossCode?
- Choose it if you want the deepest RPG progression and the highest concentration of dungeon-style puzzles among these three recommendations.
- Choose it if 16-bit SNES-inspired graphics appeal to you but you would rather explore science fiction than conventional fantasy.
- Choose it if you enjoy ranged action, repeated returns to established mechanics, and challenges that build over time.
- Choose it if you are comfortable with a larger commitment and do not need a minimalist adventure.
How the three games differ on the features Zelda fans care about
Exploration and world connectivity
TUNIC offers the strongest sense of a world whose clues are distributed across interconnected spaces. Its secrets and manual pages reward careful observation. Death’s Door uses a more focused layout, emphasizing movement through distinct areas and the discovery of optional routes. CrossCode places exploration inside a broader RPG structure, with the emphasis on returning to systems and locations as your abilities expand.

Dungeon and puzzle density
CrossCode is the clear choice for players who want puzzles to dominate their play sessions. TUNIC combines dungeon rooms with hidden-information puzzles, so understanding the manual is as important as manipulating the environment. Death’s Door keeps puzzles in service of its combat-led progression and dungeon atmosphere.
Combat speed and difficulty
Death’s Door is the most immediately combat-focused, pairing fast melee action with arrows, magic, and boss fights. CrossCode is also fast, but its ranged action is integrated with a larger RPG and puzzle framework. TUNIC balances combat against exploration and decoding; its encounters are part of a broader process of learning how the world works.
Items, abilities, and progression
TUNIC treats discoveries as keys to both physical access and understanding. Death’s Door combines weapons, magic, upgrades, and character-stat customization in a streamlined package. CrossCode offers the most substantial RPG progression and repeatedly asks you to apply its tools in new puzzle and combat contexts.
Tone and story delivery
TUNIC foregrounds mystery and discovery through its partially unreadable manual and environmental storytelling. Death’s Door delivers a darkly comic narrative around its action. CrossCode presents a science-fiction story alongside its retro-inspired action-RPG systems.
Visual style
TUNIC uses an isometric presentation centered on a small fox and a deliberately mysterious world. Death’s Door has a stylized fantasy look that supports its dark humor. CrossCode uses 16-bit SNES-style graphics while placing its action in science-fiction surroundings.

A practical decision guide
Pick TUNIC when discovery is the point
Select TUNIC if you want to decode a world, inspect an in-game manual, and find meaning in maps, symbols, and apparently insignificant details. It is the strongest fit for players who remember Zelda as an adventure of secrets rather than a sequence of fights.
Pick Death’s Door when action is the point
Select Death’s Door if you want to move quickly from one fight or boss to the next, with enough exploration and secrets to keep the world from feeling linear. Its melee, arrows, magic, upgrades, and dark humor make it the cleanest recommendation for a focused combat adventure.
Pick CrossCode when puzzles and progression are the point
Select CrossCode if you want a substantial 2D action RPG in which puzzles recur throughout the adventure and progression keeps expanding the range of problems you can solve. Its science-fiction setting and 16-bit presentation make it a distinct game rather than a simple fantasy imitation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPC setup and purchase checks
Controller choice
A PC gamepad or wired controller is the most defensible accessory recommendation for this group. Steam explicitly recommends a gamepad or controller for TUNIC on PC, and analog movement with dedicated face buttons suits all three games’ real-time action. If you normally play action games with a keyboard and mouse, verify each title’s current control options and remapping support on its Steam page before purchase.
Verify the live storefront listing
TUNIC, Death’s Door, and CrossCode have official Steam listings for PC. Check the live page for the current price, edition, regional availability, system requirements, language support, controller notes, and any bundle or discount, because those details can change after publication. Do not treat a temporary sale price as a permanent cost.
Match the game to your available time
Use the commitment column in the comparison table as a planning tool rather than a promise of a specific number of hours. Death’s Door is the most streamlined, TUNIC concentrates depth in optional discoveries and interpretation, and CrossCode asks for the largest sustained investment in RPG progression and puzzles.
Bottom line
For most readers asking for “the closest thing to Zelda on Steam,” start with TUNIC. Its interconnected world, dungeon-like areas, hidden treasures, bosses, item discovery, and decipherable manual create the most distinctive modern Zelda-like identity. Choose Death’s Door when you want streamlined combat, secrets, upgrades, and dark humor. Choose CrossCode when you want the deepest puzzle workload, fast ranged action, and a longer science-fiction RPG structure.
