Play Majora’s Mask first. It is the closest preparation for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Nintendo Switch 2 because it follows Ocarina’s 3D movement, targeting, camera language and dungeon vocabulary while showing how those ideas evolved immediately afterward. Add A Link to the Past for the classic top-down design grammar, or choose Link’s Awakening if you want a shorter route. For a three-game primer, play Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild.

Nintendo says the remake launches on November 5, 2026. The ranking below is an editorial guide based on continuity, 3D lineage, classic puzzle structure and modern exploration—not an official Nintendo list or a score-based ranking.

Which Zelda game should you play first?

If you will play only one game before the remake, choose Majora’s Mask. It is the most direct bridge from Ocarina’s original 3D design to the new version: movement, target-based combat, camera management and dungeon vocabulary all remain close enough to make the transition meaningful, while its position as Ocarina’s immediate successor gives it the strongest continuity context.

Use this decision rule if your time is limited:

  • One game: Majora’s Mask.
  • Two games: Majora’s Mask and A Link to the Past. Substitute Link’s Awakening when you need a shorter, more self-contained classic.
  • Three games: Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild.
  • Series-history route: The Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past, Majora’s Mask, then Breath of the Wild.

The other titles have specific jobs. Twilight Princess is the best later interpretation of Ocarina’s darker 3D adventure format. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are comparisons for how Hyrule moved from traditional, guided dungeons toward open-air exploration and systemic play.

How the recommendations are judged

There is no authoritative, consistently dated review-score dataset that ranks every Zelda game fairly for this purpose. A score would also obscure what “preparation” means. The order here uses four practical axes:

  • Continuity and timeline context: whether the game follows Ocarina directly or helps you understand its place in the series.
  • 3D design lineage: how closely movement, camera control, targeting and dungeon vocabulary prepare you for Ocarina’s remake.
  • Classic puzzle structure: the top-down item-gated progression and compact dungeon logic that Ocarina translates into three dimensions.
  • Modern exploration: how later games replace fixed routes with traversal, player freedom, verticality and interacting systems.

That makes the ranking useful for different readers. The “best” first game is not necessarily the one with the newest presentation or the broadest world; it is the one that teaches the design ideas you want to recognize when you start the remake.

Ranking at a glance

Rank Game Best preparation for Choose it when
1 Majora’s Mask Ocarina’s immediate 3D lineage, targeting, camera and dungeon vocabulary You want the strongest continuity and the closest mechanical warm-up
2 A Link to the Past Classic top-down progression, compact dungeons and light/dark-world structure You want to understand the 2D design grammar behind Ocarina
3 Link’s Awakening Dense puzzle spaces and a self-contained classic adventure You have less time or prefer a distinctive, contained tone
4 Twilight Princess A later, darker 3D interpretation with large dungeons You want a comparison with a more mature visual mood
5 Breath of the Wild The modern open-air exploration model You want to see how traversal and freedom changed after traditional dungeons
6 Tears of the Kingdom Construction, vertical exploration and systemic Hyrule design You want an optional modern-design comparison, not required preparation

1. Majora’s Mask: the closest preparation

Majora’s Mask earns the top spot because it sits closest to Ocarina’s 3D foundation. The two games share the movement, targeting and camera vocabulary that define Nintendo’s early 3D Zelda design. Practicing those interactions before the remake lets you focus on its new presentation instead of relearning how to move through a three-dimensional dungeon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What it teaches

  • 3D spatial reading: rooms, corridors and vertical spaces are designed around navigating a three-dimensional camera rather than a flat map.
  • Targeting discipline: encounters ask you to manage positioning and a target lock while moving, attacking and observing the room.
  • Dungeon vocabulary: switches, locked progression and item-led problem solving feel like a direct continuation of Ocarina’s design language.
  • Immediate context: it is Ocarina’s direct post-Ocarina context, so you can recognize which ideas were carried forward and which were changed.

Who should choose it

Choose it even if you are not normally a completionist. For a single-game primer, its value is not that it reproduces every Ocarina scenario; it is that it provides the most relevant mechanical and historical handoff. It is also the right pick for readers asking, “Do I need to play Majora’s Mask first?” You do not need it to understand the remake, but you will get the clearest preparation from it.

2. A Link to the Past: the classic design grammar

A Link to the Past is the best counterpoint to the 3D route. Its top-down perspective exposes the compact puzzle structure and item-gated progression that Ocarina translates into a three-dimensional world. Playing it helps you see that Ocarina is not only a technical leap; it is also a 3D interpretation of established Zelda problem solving.

What to watch for

  • Compact dungeons: observe how rooms, keys and locked routes form a readable sequence without relying on a large open world.
  • Item-gated progression: notice how acquiring a tool changes which spaces are reachable and which puzzles can be solved.
  • Light/dark-world structure: the split-world model is a foundational way of organizing Hyrule’s geography and progression.

When it is better than Majora’s Mask

Pick it first when your goal is design history rather than controller practice. It is also the stronger second game after Majora’s Mask, because the pair covers both sides of Ocarina’s lineage: the older 2D grammar and the immediate 3D evolution.

3. Link’s Awakening: a shorter classic route

Link’s Awakening offers a practical alternative to A Link to the Past. It is shorter and more self-contained, with dense puzzle spaces and a distinctive tone. That makes it useful when you want classic Zelda structure without committing to a broader series-history route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it helps

  • Dense puzzle spaces: its compact design makes the relationship between room layout, item use and progression easy to study.
  • Self-contained structure: you can finish a complete classic-style adventure without treating it as a survey of the entire series.
  • Distinctive tone: it demonstrates that Zelda’s puzzle framework can support a notably different atmosphere while remaining recognizable.

Choose Link’s Awakening instead of A Link to the Past when the latter’s larger historical role is less important than completing a focused classic game. It is not a replacement for Majora’s Mask if your priority is 3D control familiarity.

4. Twilight Princess: a later, darker 3D interpretation

Twilight Princess is the best later comparison for readers who want to see Nintendo revisit Ocarina’s 3D formula with a darker visual mood and larger dungeons. It is not as close in continuity as Majora’s Mask, but that distance is useful: you can compare what stayed recognizable and what expanded over time.

What to compare

  • Dungeon scale: its larger dungeons show how the traditional 3D format can grow beyond the more compact early template.
  • Visual mood: the darker presentation provides a deliberate contrast with Ocarina’s remake, whose visuals are being completely overhauled rather than simply reproduced.
  • Formula versus revision: treat it as a later interpretation, not as a required prequel. Its value comes from comparison.

Include it in a three-game route when you want one game that sits between Ocarina’s classic structure and the modern open-air design of Breath of the Wild.

5. Breath of the Wild: the modern open-air reset

Breath of the Wild belongs on the list for a different reason. It shows how the series changed after the traditional dungeon structure: exploration, traversal and player freedom become the organizing principles of the world. It will not train you for Ocarina’s camera or targeting as directly as Majora’s Mask, but it gives you a baseline for understanding what the remake is—and is not—trying to be.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it as a contrast, not a prerequisite

  • Exploration: compare open-air movement with Ocarina’s more directed progression.
  • Traversal: notice how getting around the world itself becomes a central design problem.
  • Player freedom: contrast a modern structure built around choice with the classic item-gated route represented by A Link to the Past.

Play it before the remake if your main question is how Zelda evolved in the years after the traditional 3D template. Do not choose it as your only preparation if you specifically want to practice Ocarina-style dungeons, camera handling or targeting.

6. Tears of the Kingdom: optional systemic comparison

Tears of the Kingdom is the least necessary title on this list, but it is the richest optional comparison for modern design. It extends the open-air direction with construction, vertical exploration and a systemic version of Hyrule.

Why it is optional

Its strengths answer a different question from the remake. Ocarina’s remake is revisiting a landmark 3D adventure with overhauled presentation and controls; Tears of the Kingdom represents an expansive, systems-driven approach to exploration. Playing it can sharpen your sense of how far the series has moved, but it will not provide the most efficient preparation for classic dungeon pacing.

Choose it after Breath of the Wild if you want a modern-design double feature. Skip it on a short route.

Recommended play routes

One-game route

  1. Play Majora’s Mask.
  2. Start the remake with its movement, camera and targeting concepts already familiar.

This route maximizes continuity and mechanical relevance.

Two-game route

  1. Play Majora’s Mask for the immediate 3D lineage.
  2. Play A Link to the Past to understand the top-down puzzle and progression grammar behind that lineage.

If you need a shorter classic, replace A Link to the Past with Link’s Awakening.

Three-game route

  1. Majora’s Mask — direct 3D continuity.
  2. Twilight Princess — a later, darker and larger interpretation of the 3D formula.
  3. Breath of the Wild — the open-air reset that reframed exploration and freedom.

This is the broadest preparation without requiring both modern open-air games.

What the remake changes—and which game prepares you for each change

Nintendo’s announcement describes a substantial presentation and control overhaul rather than a simple resolution upgrade. The remake launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026, with the following announced features:

Announced feature Most relevant preparation Why
Completely overhauled visuals Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild They provide later visual points of comparison for how Hyrule can be presented in 3D.
Fully voiced cutscenes and expanded character dialogue Majora’s Mask It keeps the immediate post-Ocarina context in view while you assess how the remake expands its narrative presentation.
Symphonic orchestral music Any route Music is a remake presentation change, not a requirement to learn a particular game system.
Reworked camera and movement controls Majora’s Mask Its 3D movement and targeting vocabulary are the closest mechanical warm-up.
Faster loading and smoother performance Any route These are technical improvements announced for the remake rather than skills learned from another Zelda title.
Continuing day/night cycle Majora’s Mask It keeps your attention on how time and world state can shape a 3D Zelda experience.
Threads of Time story-progress feature A Link to the Past and Link’s Awakening Classic progression-focused games provide useful context for a named tool that tracks story progress.
Switch 2 microphone support for humming learned ocarina melodies Majora’s Mask It is the closest listed preparation for treating the ocarina as an active part of play.

Nintendo also says a playable ocarina and a HORI electric ocarina are planned for later in 2026. Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo are planned for 2027 and will unlock special masks. These accessories are optional; none is required to understand the recommended games or begin the remake.

Edition and launch details to plan around

  • Release date: November 5, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, according to Nintendo’s announcement.
  • Physical edition: Nintendo says the first print run has textured foil packaging.
  • Regular price: Nintendo lists $59.99 for the physical version; treat that as the announced regular price, not a guaranteed regional checkout total or promotion.
  • Later merchandise: Nintendo announced a LEGO Ocarina of Time – Link & Epona set with 1,750 pieces for spring 2027 and a 27-inch Hasbro Electronic Master Sword for spring 2027.

Retail availability, regional pricing and final stock can change. Verify those details with the retailer and region you intend to use.

Can you play the older Zelda games on Switch 2?

The remake announcement confirms the new game for Nintendo Switch 2, but it does not establish a complete catalogue of older Zelda releases on that hardware. Availability can depend on Nintendo’s current service offerings, digital store listings, edition and region. Check the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop and Nintendo’s current compatibility or service information for the specific title you want before building a route around it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a particular classic is unavailable to you, preserve the route’s purpose rather than forcing the exact list: use Majora’s Mask for 3D continuity, one available top-down classic for puzzle structure, and Breath of the Wild for the modern open-air contrast.

A practical pre-remake checklist

  1. Choose your axis: select continuity, classic puzzle history, later 3D comparison or modern exploration as your main goal.
  2. Set the route length: one game for efficiency, two for 3D plus 2D context, or three for a broad lineage.
  3. Play actively: while playing, note how movement, targeting, camera position, item gates, room layout and world traversal solve different design problems.
  4. Leave modern comparisons until after the core: complete Majora’s Mask before using Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom as your primary comparison.
  5. Confirm platform access: check current Nintendo listings for each older title rather than assuming every release is available on Switch 2.
  6. Plan for the remake’s new controls: expect to spend the opening session adjusting to reworked camera and movement controls even if you know the original.
  7. Decide whether optional accessories matter to you: the microphone humming feature, later playable ocarina, amiibo and announced merchandise are extras, not prerequisites.

Bottom line

Majora’s Mask is the best single Zelda game to play before Ocarina of Time’s remake. Add A Link to the Past for the classic design foundation, or Link’s Awakening for a shorter version of that lesson. Use Twilight Princess to study later 3D dungeon design, then Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom only when you want to compare the series’ move toward open-air, systemic exploration.
