If you mean The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom—Nintendo’s official title, released for Nintendo Switch on September 26, 2024—the closest follow-up here is The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. It keeps the focus on a top-down adventure, exploration, dungeons, and puzzles. Choose The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom instead if what you most want is room to experiment and explore on a much larger scale; it is a 3D adventure with a notably different format.

Which Zelda game should you play next?

Game Best fit after Echoes of Wisdom Format Why choose it
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (Nintendo Switch) You want another compact-feeling, puzzle-and-dungeon-focused adventure. Top-down exploration Nintendo describes an adventure across Koholint Island, with trap-filled dungeons and customizable Chamber Dungeons.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom You want experimentation and broad exploration more than a similar structure. Expansive 3D adventure Nintendo highlights open-ended exploration across Hyrule’s land and sky, construction with Ultrahand, and item combinations with Fuse.

These are different kinds of follow-up, not an objective ranking. Link’s Awakening is the more natural choice if you want to stay close to the top-down adventure, dungeon, and puzzle side of Echoes of Wisdom. Tears of the Kingdom makes more sense if creative problem-solving and a wider world are your priorities, even if you are ready for a substantial change in scale.

Why the name matters: “Echoes of Hyrule” or “Echoes of Wisdom”?

Nintendo’s official title is The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom; its Nintendo Switch listing gives September 26, 2024, as the release date. “Echoes of Hyrule” appears to be a mistaken version of the name rather than the official game title. The recommendations below are for someone who has played—or is looking for games after—Echoes of Wisdom.

Choose Link’s Awakening for a closer structural match

What carries over

Nintendo describes the Switch edition as an exploration of Koholint Island featuring trap-filled dungeons. That makes it the strongest fit of these two if the parts of Echoes of Wisdom you want more of are exploring a connected-feeling adventure, working through dungeons, and solving puzzles. It is a top-down adventure, so it also preserves a closer camera and play format than Tears of the Kingdom.

#1 Best Overall
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - World Edition
  • Discover Hyrule as never before: by making your own path, choices, and consequences
  • Ingenuity is the key to survival: find multiple solutions to tons of dynamic puzzles
  • Surprises hide around every corner: scavenge weapons, armor, plants, animals, and more
  • Live off the land: find weapons and armor, cook food, and brew elixirs
  • Utilize special technology: the in-game Sheikah Slate controls, objects and enemies in fun ways

The games are not identical. Echoes of Wisdom centers on Zelda using the Tri Rod to create echoes—imitations of objects and creatures found in the world—and using them to solve puzzles or fight enemies. Link’s Awakening offers its own adventure and dungeon challenges; the available descriptions do not establish that it uses the same echo system. Pick it for the broad style of play, not as a continuation of that mechanic.

What to expect from Chamber Dungeons

The Switch version also includes customizable Chamber Dungeons. This is a useful extra if you enjoy thinking about dungeon layouts and want a construction-oriented activity within a more compact adventure. It should not be confused with the open-ended world-building scale of Tears of the Kingdom: Nintendo specifically presents Chamber Dungeons as a feature of Link’s Awakening, while its description of the larger 3D game emphasizes construction and exploration across Hyrule.

Who should pick it

  • Choose Link’s Awakening if dungeons and puzzles are the main reason you enjoyed Echoes of Wisdom.
  • Choose it if you want another top-down Zelda adventure rather than switching to a broad 3D world.
  • Consider its Chamber Dungeons if customizing dungeon challenges sounds appealing alongside the island adventure.

Choose Tears of the Kingdom for creative freedom and a bigger world

How its experimentation works

Nintendo describes Tears of the Kingdom as supporting open-ended exploration across Hyrule’s land and sky. Its creative tools include Ultrahand for construction and Fuse for combining items. Those systems make it the better match if your favorite part of Echoes of Wisdom was trying different solutions with objects and abilities rather than following a more familiar dungeon-and-puzzle rhythm.

There is a useful connection between the games, but it is not a one-to-one match. In Echoes of Wisdom, the Tri Rod creates echoes of objects and creatures found in the world; Nintendo’s example product copy mentions using water blocks to reach higher places, making bridges from beds, or throwing rocks at foes. Tears of the Kingdom also rewards experimentation, but its named tools are Ultrahand and Fuse. Expect a different set of systems and a larger environment, not the same echo-based play in 3D.

The important trade-off: scale and format

Tears of the Kingdom is not simply the next compact, top-down adventure. Its land-and-sky exploration and construction tools belong to a much larger 3D format. If you are ready to roam and experiment broadly, that change is the point. If you mainly want another tightly focused experience built around dungeons and puzzles, Link’s Awakening is the closer match in this shortlist.

Who should pick it

  • Choose Tears of the Kingdom if building and combining things sounds more appealing than returning to a top-down structure.
  • Choose it if you want to explore widely across both Hyrule’s land and sky.
  • Choose it only if the change in scale and 3D format is appealing; similarity to Echoes of Wisdom is not its main advantage.

What makes Echoes of Wisdom distinct

Knowing what you want to carry forward helps make the choice clearer. Nintendo says Zelda uses the Tri Rod to create echoes: imitations of objects and creatures encountered in the world. Those echoes can be used in puzzles and against enemies, so solutions can depend on selecting and applying what the player has found rather than relying on a single fixed use for every object.

Nintendo’s feature page also identifies dungeons, a temporary swordfighter ability, quests, and minigames. The Associated Press described the game as combining the top-down action of the original 1987 Zelda with improvisation associated with Tears of the Kingdom, and characterized its puzzles as clever. That is a useful way to think about the two recommendations: Link’s Awakening aligns more closely with the top-down adventure side, while Tears of the Kingdom is the choice for more open-ended creative play.

Optional amiibo rewards

Echoes of Wisdom supports optional Zelda-themed amiibo rewards, including smoothie ingredients and alternate-color outfits. Nintendo presents amiibo as optional rather than a requirement to play. They are relevant only if you want those additional rewards; they are not a reason you need to buy an accessory before choosing a follow-up game.

A simple decision rule

  1. Start with the activity you want more of. For dungeons, puzzles, and a top-down adventure, pick Link’s Awakening. For open exploration and creative construction, pick Tears of the Kingdom.
  2. Consider how much change you want. Link’s Awakening is the closer structural follow-up. Tears of the Kingdom offers a broader 3D format and a different scale.
  3. Choose for the experience, not a presumed sequel connection. These are recommendations based on the play styles Nintendo describes, not direct continuations of Echoes of Wisdom.
