If you want a Zelda game built around choosing where to go and how to get there, start with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. For exploration across multiple layers of the same world, choose The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The Wind Waker is the sea-travel option, while Skyward Sword HD is a better fit if you want discovery shaped by dungeons and puzzles. They offer different kinds of exploration rather than one objective winner.

Which Zelda game is best for exploration?

Breath of the Wild is the clearest starting point for players who want to roam and decide their own routes. Nintendo’s Breath of the Wild Explorer’s Guide calls Hyrule “vast and wild” and notes that “While climbing is a great way to reach new heights, it’s only one of the many ways Link has to explore the world.” Climbing is one part of a broader approach to getting around, not the only way to make discoveries.

Choose Tears of the Kingdom if you want to revisit Hyrule with more vertical layers and ways to shape your travel. Choose The Wind Waker if the draw is a journey by sea between islands. Choose Skyward Sword HD if you prefer exploration organized around distinct regions, puzzle-filled dungeons, and travel between the sky and the surface.

How the exploration styles differ

Game Exploration style Best fit
Breath of the Wild A broad landscape with self-directed travel; Nintendo highlights climbing as one of several ways to explore. Players who want to choose their own routes through Hyrule.
Tears of the Kingdom Hyrule across land, sky, caves, and depths, with abilities that enable creative movement, shortcuts, and construction. Players who want layered environments and experimentation with traversal.
The Wind Waker A sea voyage is central to the premise, according to Nintendo’s series history. Players drawn to ocean travel and island discovery.
Skyward Sword HD Travel between floating islands and the surface, with exploration built around designed areas, puzzles, and dungeons. Players who prefer structured adventures and puzzle-filled dungeons.

These are practical comparison points based on Nintendo’s descriptions, not measured ratings of map size, playtime, or game quality.

Why choose Tears of the Kingdom?

Nintendo describes Tears of the Kingdom as a sequel to Breath of the Wild, with travel across Hyrule’s landscapes and floating islands. The game also includes caves and depths. Its abilities change how you approach movement: Ultrahand lets Link move and attach objects, Ascend provides a shortcut through overhead surfaces, and Recall reverses an object’s movement.

Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi describes diving from the sky into water as both a seamless means of travel and a way to gather information about the surface by surveying it from above. That makes vertical movement part of discovery as well as transportation. Nintendo’s developer interview discusses the added sky and cave regions and Fujibayashi’s account of diving: Nintendo developer interview.

When Breath of the Wild is the better fit

Pick Breath of the Wild when the main appeal is setting out across Hyrule without making dungeon-focused progression the center of your choice. Nintendo’s guide presents climbing as just one of many ways to explore, a useful signal that travel can involve more than following a single route. It is the most direct recommendation here for self-directed roaming; the available official descriptions do not establish a measured comparison of its size or exploration quality against the other games.

When to choose The Wind Waker

The Wind Waker suits players who want exploration framed as a sea journey. Nintendo’s series-history page describes Link traveling the seas to rescue his sister. That supports the ocean-travel distinction, but not a more detailed comparison of island variety, world size, or how much freedom it offers relative to the other games.

When Skyward Sword HD is the right choice

Skyward Sword HD is the strongest match here for players who enjoy designed areas and dungeon puzzles more than open-ended roaming. Nintendo describes travel between floating islands and the surface, and its gameplay overview presents each dungeon as its own adventure. The game supports motion controls and button-only controls, so motion input is not the only control option. Nintendo also describes materials used to upgrade equipment. See the official Skyward Sword HD overview and gameplay information for its feature and control details.

How to choose after Ocarina of Time

  • Want to set your own route through a broad landscape? Start with Breath of the Wild.
  • Want to explore Hyrule across land, sky, caves, and depths? Choose Tears of the Kingdom.
  • Want your journey to center on sea travel and islands? Choose The Wind Waker.
  • Want distinct dungeons, puzzles, and trips between sky and surface? Choose Skyward Sword HD.

Nintendo’s official descriptions establish these broad differences, but they do not provide a like-for-like ranking of exploration, dungeon quality, map area, or playtime. The right next game depends on whether you want open roaming, layered traversal, a sea voyage, or puzzle-led areas.
