For most players leaving Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force, start with Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution on Nintendo Switch. It is the most complete currently available solo substitute, with story campaigns covering the animated series through VRAINS, more than 10,000 cards and over 80 hours of advertised gameplay. Choose Yu-Gi-Oh! MASTER DUEL instead if current competitive rules and online play matter more than a character-driven campaign.

If what you miss is specifically Duel Academy, partner selection, student activities and Tag Duels, the closest match is the upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh! TAG FORCE GX. Konami announced it on September 9, 2026 as a remake of GX TAG FORCE 3, scheduled for February 16, 2027 on Steam, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

Which game should you choose after GX Tag Force?

The right follow-up depends on which part of GX Tag Force you want to preserve. No single game combines its school-life routine, partner relationship system, anime cast and long solo progression with a modern card pool. The options below divide those strengths clearly.

1. Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution — the best all-round replacement

Link Evolution is the safest purchase for a player who wants a substantial game immediately after finishing GX Tag Force. Its appeal is breadth rather than school-life role-playing: you move through story content from the animated series eras through Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS, build decks from a pool Konami described as exceeding 10,000 cards, and work through a package advertised at more than 80 hours of gameplay.

Why it works as a solo follow-up

  • Long-form progression: The story structure gives you a clear route through multiple anime eras instead of leaving you to create your own goals in a primarily competitive client.
  • Large card selection: The over-10,000-card figure comes from Konami’s 2019 product page. It is a published card-pool claim, not a guarantee that every card is legal in every duel mode.
  • Local and online play: You can continue beyond the campaign with multiplayer options when you want a human opponent.
  • Physical Switch option: Nintendo Switch is the researched platform with both physical and digital editions. PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam are listed as digital-only editions.

What it does not reproduce from Tag Force

Link Evolution does not center its progression on choosing a partner at Duel Academy, attending student activities or raising a relationship through a daily schedule. Its story presentation is a tour of the animated series rather than a new school-life scenario. If those social and campus systems are the reason you remember GX Tag Force, this is a strong substitute for card-game volume and solo length, not a mechanical remake.

Switch ownership details

Konami lists a $39.99 manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the Switch edition and says the physical package includes three official Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. The price is an MSRP stated on the 2019 product page; a retailer’s current price can differ. The Switch version is therefore the clearest choice if you want a cartridge, while the other listed console and PC versions are digital purchases.

2. MASTER DUEL — choose this for current competitive Yu-Gi-Oh!

Yu-Gi-Oh! MASTER DUEL is built around the contemporary card game rather than an anime-season campaign. Konami describes it as the definitive edition of the competitive card game that has evolved for more than 20 years. Its product page lists more than 10,000 cards, Solo Mode, tournaments, cross-platform play and cross-save.

When Master Duel is the better choice

  • You want current rules: This is the option designed around modern competitive Yu-Gi-Oh!, rather than a fixed historical ruleset.
  • You play on several devices: The game is listed for PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android, with cross-platform play and cross-save documented by Konami.
  • You want an active opponent pool: Ranked and tournament-oriented systems give you reasons to return after the Solo Mode chapters.
  • You want to start without buying the game: It is free-to-play with in-app purchases. “Free-to-play” describes access to the client, not an absence of optional spending.

Solo play and the Tag Force comparison

Solo Mode provides structured content, but it is not the same kind of character-led calendar as GX Tag Force. You will not be selecting a Duel Academy roommate and building a friendship through school activities. The trade-off is a much stronger emphasis on current deck construction, online matchmaking and event play.

Practical expectations

The advertised pool of more than 10,000 cards is comparable in headline size to Link Evolution, but the two games serve different purposes. In Master Duel, card acquisition, deck legality and the live competitive environment shape how quickly you can assemble a deck. Treat the free entry as a way to test the current game, then decide whether its ongoing in-app purchases and competitive cycle fit your budget and play style.

3. TAG FORCE GX — the closest modern match, but it is not available yet

Yu-Gi-Oh! TAG FORCE GX is the answer to “Is there a modern game like Tag Force?”—with an important date qualification. Konami announced it on September 9, 2026 for February 16, 2027. Until that release date, it is an upcoming title rather than a game you can play today.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the announced remake includes

Konami calls it a remake of the popular RPG card game Yu-Gi-Oh! GX TAG FORCE 3, with modern visuals, enhanced Dueling and nostalgic cards from the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime era. The documented feature set includes:

  • More than 3,800 cards focused on the GX-era experience.
  • More than 100 visually upgraded characters.
  • Partner-based Tag Duels.
  • Student-life mini-games at Duel Academy.
  • Online Tag and 1v1 rooms.
  • Gallery scenes from TAG FORCE 1 and TAG FORCE 2.

Nintendo’s listing frames the setup as your final year at Duel Academy, where you select a partner from over 100 characters and duel as a team. That combination of a school setting, partner choice and two-on-two play is why this is the closest structural successor to the PSP-era games.

Platforms and buying decision

The announced platforms are Steam, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The February 16, 2027 date is documented by Konami’s announcement and Nintendo’s listing. Pre-orders and launch bonuses are mentioned in those listings, but the available product information does not establish a universal price, a physical edition for every platform or a recurring purchase model. Check the store listing for your region before placing an order.

Who should wait for it?

Wait for TAG FORCE GX if the thing you miss most is the routine of living at the Academy, choosing a partner and watching GX characters interact around Tag Duels. Do not wait if you mainly want a large, immediately playable solo campaign or current tournament rules; Link Evolution and Master Duel address those needs now.

4. EARLY DAYS COLLECTION — a compact trip to early Yu-Gi-Oh!

Yu-Gi-Oh! EARLY DAYS COLLECTION is aimed at players who want the series’ older games rather than a modern replacement for GX Tag Force. Konami’s digital catalog describes it as a collection of classic early Yu-Gi-Oh! RPGs and strategic card games. The catalog lists a February 25, 2025 release.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Why choose it

  • Historical variety: You get multiple early approaches to Yu-Gi-Oh!, including role-playing and strategy-focused formats, instead of one contemporary rules engine.
  • Shorter sessions: The collection format suits players who want discrete retro games rather than an 80-hour, anime-spanning campaign.
  • Early-era rules: Its appeal is seeing how the series played before later mechanics and card pools became standard.

Why it is not a direct Tag Force substitute

The catalog description does not document Duel Academy scheduling, partner progression, a GX-era cast or a comparable card count. Choose it for preservation and retro experimentation, not because it recreates the social structure of GX Tag Force.

5. DUEL LINKS — a lighter character-led option

Yu-Gi-Oh! DUEL LINKS brings the TCG to digital play through competitive card battles with Yugi, Kaiba and other franchise characters. Konami’s catalog lists a January 11, 2017 release.

Where it fits

This is the most natural pick when you want recognizable characters and quick digital duels without committing to the larger campaign package in Link Evolution. Its presentation is more character-led than a purely anonymous ladder, so it can provide some of the anime flavor that makes GX Tag Force memorable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important limits

The cited catalog entry does not state a total card count or promise a Duel Academy-style partner-and-calendar system. It should therefore be treated as a lighter digital experience, not as evidence of a full Tag Force sequel. Players seeking current competitive depth should compare its rules and progression with Master Duel rather than assuming the two clients are interchangeable.

How the games compare on the questions Tag Force players actually ask

Which has the closest GX nostalgia?

TAG FORCE GX is the clear match because its announced setting, characters, partner Tag Duels, student mini-games and GX-era cards directly target that nostalgia. Its February 2027 release means you need another game if you want to play immediately.

Which has the best story mode?

Link Evolution has the strongest documented long-form package: anime story content through VRAINS and more than 80 hours of advertised gameplay. That is a different type of story from a school-life RPG, but it is the most clearly quantified solo campaign among the currently available choices.

Which is best for solo play today?

Choose Link Evolution when “solo” means a substantial, finite campaign with a beginning-to-end route. Choose Master Duel when it means practicing decks in Solo Mode before entering an ongoing competitive environment. The former is campaign-first; the latter is competition-first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which has the largest card pool?

Link Evolution and Master Duel both advertise more than 10,000 cards. TAG FORCE GX advertises more than 3,800 cards, a smaller pool focused on the GX-era identity. The early collections and Duel Links entry do not provide comparable totals in the cited catalog descriptions.

Can you buy a physical game for Switch?

Yes. Link Evolution is documented as available physically and digitally on Nintendo Switch, with a $39.99 MSRP and three included official cards in the physical edition. TAG FORCE GX is listed for Switch and Switch 2 ahead of its February 16, 2027 launch, but the available information does not establish physical availability for every region or platform.

A decision path that avoids buying the wrong game

  1. Start with your preferred activity. If you want a campus routine and partner Tag Duels, mark TAG FORCE GX as the target. If you want a finished campaign now, choose Link Evolution. If you want ranked or tournament play, choose Master Duel.
  2. Decide whether you need a physical copy. Select the Switch physical edition of Link Evolution if a cartridge matters. For a digital-first experience, all five options are better evaluated by their platform availability and ruleset.
  3. Match the card era to your expectations. The two over-10,000-card games are built for broad modern coverage. The announced TAG FORCE GX pool is smaller and intentionally tied to GX nostalgia. EARLY DAYS COLLECTION is for even earlier designs and rules.
  4. Separate a one-time purchase from a live service. Link Evolution is a conventional paid game; Master Duel is free-to-play with in-app purchases. That difference affects how you budget for deck building and how often the game’s environment changes.
  5. Check the release status before you buy. TAG FORCE GX is scheduled for February 16, 2027, while Link Evolution, Master Duel, EARLY DAYS COLLECTION and DUEL LINKS are the options represented as released in the cited product information.

Recommended play orders for different kinds of returning fans

The GX completionist

Play Link Evolution now for a large solo route and broad card selection, then move to TAG FORCE GX at launch for the Academy setting and partner-focused play. This gives you a campaign immediately without pretending that either game reproduces every system of the other.

The competitive player

Start with Master Duel. Use Solo Mode to learn its presentation and deck interactions, then move into its online, tournament and cross-platform features when you are ready. Its free-to-play entry lowers the cost of testing the current rules, but plan for optional in-app purchases if you want to accelerate collection building.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The retro archivist

Choose EARLY DAYS COLLECTION first, because its purpose is historical variety. Add DUEL LINKS if you want a more character-forward digital client afterward, but do not expect either to provide the same Academy schedule and partner loop as TAG FORCE GX.

Bottom line: the best next game depends on what you miss

Buy Legacy of the Duelist: Link Evolution when you want the strongest currently available all-round replacement, especially on Switch where a physical edition is documented. Download MASTER DUEL when modern competition, cross-platform play and tournaments are the priority. Wait for TAG FORCE GX when the irreplaceable part of GX Tag Force is Duel Academy life, partner choice and Tag Duels. Use EARLY DAYS COLLECTION for compact early-series history and DUEL LINKS for a lighter character-led digital experience.
