Mine at Y -59 for the highest practical diamond density in current Minecraft worlds generated with the 1.18-and-newer ore distribution. A 1×2 branch-mine with your feet around Y -59 (often described as a tunnel at Y -58) puts you in the richest part of the diamond range while avoiding some of the constant bedrock interruptions found lower down.
Diamonds can generate from Y -64 through Y 16 and become more common as you go deeper. In practice, Y -54 to -58 is a worthwhile compromise when lava and bedrock make Y -59 slow or hazardous. Open caves are useful for finding exposed ore, but systematic tunnels through solid deepslate are more reliable because air-exposed diamond generation is reduced.

For a deliberate diamond-mining trip, enable coordinates, descend until your player position is approximately Y -59, and carve a regular network of two-block-high branch tunnels. This level is the practical sweet spot identified by current ore-distribution charts: it is at the deepest part of the high-density zone without placing every tunnel directly into the most troublesome bedrock layers.
You may see reputable guides write “mine at Y -58.” That is usually a coordinate convention rather than a different generation rule. Some describe the block occupied by the tunnel, while others describe the player’s feet or the level of the blocks being exposed. The useful instruction is to work around the Y -58/-59 boundary and keep your mining pattern consistent.

| Where are diamonds most concentrated? | At the lowest practical levels, with Y -59 the commonly cited optimum. |
| What is the generation range? | Y -64 through Y 16 in the post-1.18 distribution. |
| What if Y -59 is awkward? | Move up to about Y -54 to -58 for easier tunnels and a modest density trade-off. |
| Should you mine only visible cave walls? | No. Reduced air exposure means cave-only exploration can miss diamonds that would generate in enclosed deepslate. |
Why deeper levels contain more diamonds
Mojang’s Java Edition Snapshot 21w37a described the change directly: “Diamond generates below y 16, with more diamond the lower you go.” That rule is the reason modern mining advice moved far below the levels used before the 1.18 world-generation overhaul.
Diamond generation extends from Y -64 to Y 16, but the range is not uniform. The lower part of the range has the greatest concentration, so a tunnel at Y -59 exposes more likely diamond-bearing blocks than a tunnel high in the deepslate layer. The distribution does not make every block at -59 valuable; it changes the probability across the world-generation band.
There is an important second rule: diamond has reduced air exposure. Fewer diamonds are generated where the ore would be directly exposed to air, such as on a large cave wall. This does not make caves useless. It means a visible vein is a bonus rather than a complete survey of the surrounding area. A systematic tunnel through solid deepslate can reveal ore that a player who follows only open caverns never sees.
Understanding the Y -58 versus Y -59 wording
Minecraft coordinates identify three dimensions, and mining instructions can refer to different blocks in the same tunnel. A guide may label the level of the player’s feet, the block forming the tunnel floor, or the block at eye level. In a two-block-high passage, those references can differ by one block.
Current references therefore cluster around Y -58 and Y -59 without disagreeing about the underlying ore distribution. Treat them as the same practical target: descend to the upper edge of the deepest useful branch-mining layer, verify your coordinate display, and keep your tunnel at that height. If your feet read Y -59 while the guide calls the passage Y -58, you are not one layer away from the recommended zone.

How the main mining levels compare
The best level depends on more than theoretical density. Bedrock and lava can interrupt a tunnel, forcing detours that reduce the amount of solid rock you inspect per minute. The following comparison separates the generation advantage from the practical cost.
| Mining approach | Diamond density | Lava and bedrock interruptions | Tunnel efficiency | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Y -59 branch mining | Highest practical density in current charts | Manageable, but frequent enough to require preparation | Best balance for a dedicated search | Use when maximizing diamonds is the priority. |
| Y -58 | Effectively the same target zone; often a coordinate convention | Slightly easier to route around than the lowest layers | Very high | Use when your coordinate display or guide labels the tunnel this way. |
| Y -54 to -58 | Small trade-off from the Y -59 optimum | Generally fewer bottom-layer obstructions | Often better when detours at -59 become constant | Use for a safer, less frustrating long session. |
| Y -60 to -64 | Very high theoretical density | Bedrock and lava interrupt tunnels more often | Lower because of blocked or irregular passages | Use only if you accept frequent route changes and difficult excavation. |
| Open-cave exploration | Visible ore can be found quickly, but air-exposed generation is reduced | Lava pockets and uneven terrain vary by cave | Fast to start; incomplete as a sole method | Use to supplement branch mining or collect exposed veins safely. |
Prepare before descending
Deep deepslate mining is slow to recover from if you arrive without basic supplies. Pack for an interrupted route rather than an ideal, uninterrupted tunnel.
- Coordinates enabled: You need a reliable Y reading to stop at the intended level and return to your route.
- A water bucket: Lava pockets are common at these depths. Water gives you a way to block or neutralize a flow and create a safe retreat.
- Food: Mining, sprinting, jumping and dealing with cave hazards consume hunger. Running out while far underground turns a simple detour into a survival problem.
- Spare pickaxes: Deepslate takes longer to break than ordinary stone, and an empty tool can leave you stranded below your base.
- Building blocks: Use them to seal a lava opening, bridge an uneven gap, mark a branch, or create a temporary barrier.
- Inventory space: A long branch-mining session produces large amounts of deepslate and other blocks before you find the ore you want.
These items do not increase diamond generation. They protect the time you spend reaching the correct layer and make it possible to continue when the ideal straight tunnel is blocked.
Step-by-step: branch-mine at Y -59
- Turn on coordinates. Use the coordinate display available in your edition or world settings. Watch the Y value, not just your horizontal position.
- Descend safely. Do not dig a straight vertical shaft beneath yourself. Use a staircase or another controlled descent so you can stop at the target level without dropping into a cave or lava pocket.
- Confirm the target height. Aim for approximately Y -59 at your feet, or the equivalent Y -58 tunnel label used by your guide. A one-block difference inside this boundary does not represent a separate ore rule.
- Make a two-block-high main passage. A 1×2 tunnel lets you walk while exposing a continuous wall and ceiling. Keep the route straight enough that you can retrace it and recognize branches.
- Cut repeatable branches. From the main passage, dig side tunnels at regular intervals. Leave enough separation for each branch’s walls and ceiling to reveal the intervening blocks; the goal is complete coverage, not a random maze.
- Inspect every exposed surface. Check the floor, ceiling and both walls as you advance. Deepslate can make a diamond block blend into the background, especially in low light.
- Handle lava before expanding the opening. If a branch opens into a lava pocket, stop at the edge, place a barrier or use water, and only then widen the passage. Never sprint into an unexamined opening.
- Mark the route. Use a consistent lighting or block-marking system so you know which branches you have cleared and can find the main path after a detour.
- Return when your supplies are low. A safe trip with a partially cleared network is more productive than losing tools, food or collected ore because you continued beyond your ability to retreat.
Designing tunnels that actually expose blocks
Branch mining works because each tunnel reveals neighboring blocks that are not inside the passage itself. Its value comes from coverage: a regular pattern lets you inspect a large volume of deepslate while digging fewer blocks than a fully excavated chamber.
Use one main corridor and side branches with the same orientation and spacing throughout an area. If branches are too close, you spend time digging rock you have already exposed from the adjacent tunnel. If they are too far apart, untouched columns remain between them. Choose a spacing pattern that lets the walls, floor and ceiling of neighboring branches account for the blocks between them, then repeat it instead of improvising at every junction.

When a branch meets a cave, ravine-like opening or a large lava pocket, record the interruption and resume the same pattern on the other side. A detour should preserve your coverage plan; otherwise a single obstruction can leave an unexamined strip of deepslate.
Why cave-only mining misses diamonds
Open caves are attractive because they expose many blocks without the time cost of breaking deepslate. They are also useful for locating a starting route. However, the modern generation rule reduces diamond placements that would be directly exposed to air. A cave wall can therefore look barren even when nearby enclosed blocks contain ore.
Use caves as a supplement: collect clearly visible veins, examine safe side pockets, and then connect a systematic branch network through solid deepslate. Do not infer from one empty cavern that the surrounding chunk has no diamonds. Conversely, do not enter every dark opening just because its walls might contain ore; lava, falls and hostile mobs can make an unplanned cave search less efficient than a controlled tunnel.
Managing lava and bedrock at the deepest levels
When lava cuts across a branch
At Y -59 and below, a straight branch may open into lava. Stop before the liquid, light the area if possible, and create a solid edge from which you can work. Use your water bucket to make a safe surface or to block the source, then inspect the newly exposed boundaries. If the opening is too broad to secure efficiently, mark it and continue the branch from a parallel position rather than gambling on a blind crossing.

When bedrock blocks the floor or ceiling
The lower boundary of the world is Y -64, so the deepest levels contain irregular bedrock that prevents a uniform tunnel. A bedrock block is not a reason to abandon the entire area. Raise the passage slightly, step around the obstruction, and reconnect with the planned branch line. If repeated bedrock blocks force constant zigzags, move up toward Y -54 to -58, where the small density loss can be offset by a faster, more continuous tunnel.

When both hazards appear repeatedly
Judge the route by blocks inspected rather than by the number printed on the coordinate display. Y -59 is the density optimum, but a branch that spends most of its time sealing lava and routing around bedrock is not an efficient search. Relocating a few layers upward is a practical optimization, not a failure to follow the chart.
Choosing between Y -59 and the safer compromise
Use Y -59 when you can maintain a regular pattern, have adequate supplies and are comfortable securing lava openings. Choose Y -54 to -58 when you value uninterrupted walking tunnels, are teaching a new player, or are working in an area where the bottom layers repeatedly collapse into bedrock and lava.

The guidance here applies to the post-1.18 ore distribution used by current Minecraft 1.21 references and the current 26.x reference charts cited for this topic. The underlying rule is the same one introduced in the 1.18-era world-generation changes: diamonds generate below Y 16, with greater abundance at lower levels, across the Y -64 to 16 range.
There is no single platform-by-platform “latest release” number established here for Java, Bedrock and console editions. Interface details for enabling coordinates can differ by edition, but the mining target and the Y -58/-59 convention are the relevant parts of the distribution advice. If a future world-generation update changes the ore chart, verify that chart before treating this level as permanent.

What not to promise about diamond yield
Y -59 is a generation-density recommendation, not a guaranteed number of diamonds per hour. Your result depends on how much solid deepslate you expose, how often lava or bedrock forces detours, how systematically you space branches, and whether you spend time exploring caves instead of digging. No authoritative diamonds-per-hour statistic is established for this guidance, so any precise hourly promise would be misleading.
Measure your own route by useful tunnel length, uninterrupted coverage and safe returns to the surface. If moving to Y -56 lets you clear substantially more blocks because you avoid repeated interruptions, that route may produce a better session outcome even though Y -59 remains the denser level on the chart.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Stopping at an old pre-1.18 level
Advice centered on higher layers belongs to a different world-generation system. For current worlds, descend into the deepslate range and use the lower-level distribution.
Digging only a single straight tunnel
One corridor exposes a narrow slice of the surrounding volume. Add regularly spaced side branches so you inspect the blocks between routes.
Following only cave walls
Reduced air exposure means visible cave faces are not a complete sample. Continue into solid deepslate with a controlled branch pattern.
Ignoring the coordinate convention
Do not move several layers because one guide says -58 and another says -59. Check whether each is naming the player’s feet, the tunnel block or the exposed layer; they are normally describing the same target zone.
Refusing to move above -59
The deepest level is not automatically the fastest in every location. If bedrock and lava destroy your tunnel efficiency, shift to Y -54 to -58 and keep mining systematically.
A practical decision checklist
- Want the highest chart-based density and can manage hazards? Start at Y -59.
- Your guide says Y -58 or your feet read Y -59? Treat both as the same practical target zone.
- Constant bedrock or lava detours? Raise the route into Y -54 to -58.
- Found a large open cave? Search visible ore, then return to solid-deepslate branches.
- Need a guaranteed hourly yield? None is established; judge your route by coverage and interruptions instead.
For current 1.18-and-newer generation, the dependable method is therefore straightforward: reach the Y -58/-59 zone, branch-mine through solid deepslate, prepare for lava, and move a few layers upward whenever the deepest level stops being efficient.
