For XRP you intend to hold for years, use a self-custody hardware wallet such as Ledger Nano X. Its private keys remain isolated on the device, and each transaction must be physically approved before it is broadcast. For frequent XRP Ledger payments, token management and dApp use, Xaman is the better fit because it is a non-custodial, XRPL-native mobile wallet. A custodial service such as Uphold is convenient for buying, selling and converting to fiat, but the provider—not you—controls the keys.
The right choice depends on how you use XRP, not on a universal ranking. Separate long-term reserves from spending funds, understand who controls the secret keys, and test every new transfer with a small amount first.

Quick comparison: which XRP wallet fits your use?
| Wallet or model | Best use | Who controls the keys? | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ledger Nano X (hardware wallet) | Long-term XRP storage and infrequent, high-value transfers | You, with keys isolated on the physical device | Less convenient for constant access; you must protect the device and recovery backup |
| Xaman (mobile wallet) | Everyday XRP Ledger payments, tokens and dApps | You, through a non-custodial secret-key backup | Keys are used from an internet-connected phone, so device security matters |
| Trust Wallet (software wallet) | People who want a broad, multichain mobile app | You, managed through software on the phone | Broader coverage but less XRPL-specific workflow and online key exposure |
| Uphold (custodial service) | Buying, selling and fiat conversion with exchange-style convenience | Uphold, as the custodian | You depend on the provider for access and withdrawals |
| Trezor or another supported hardware wallet | Alternative cold-storage setup | You, with keys on the device | Confirm current XRP support and the exact signing workflow before purchase |
This table describes custody and workflow, not an independently audited safety ranking. The available documentation does not establish a dated, independent loss-rate or theft-rate comparison between these products.
Start with custody, not brand names
An XRP wallet does not “store” coins in the way a physical wallet stores cash. XRP remains recorded on the XRP Ledger. The wallet holds, protects or accesses the secret keys that authorize transactions from your account.

Custodial wallets
With a custodial service, a company controls the keys and keeps an internal record of your balance. You sign in to an account and request deposits, trades or withdrawals. This can simplify fiat conversion and trading, but access depends on the provider’s account controls, availability and withdrawal policies. If the provider freezes an account, suffers an outage or changes its terms, you cannot independently sign an XRP Ledger transaction with those keys.
Non-custodial wallets
With a non-custodial wallet such as Xaman, you control the secret keys. That removes the need to trust an exchange to authorize transfers, but it transfers responsibility to you. Losing the recovery information, exposing it to another person or signing a malicious transaction can permanently compromise the account. The XRP Ledger documentation describes Xaman as an example where the user has the secret keys.
Hardware wallets
A hardware wallet keeps the signing keys on a dedicated physical device. The companion application prepares account information and transaction details, while the device performs the critical signing operation. This separation reduces the chance that malware on a computer or phone can copy the private key. It does not protect you from approving a fraudulent address, losing the recovery backup or buying a tampered device.
Best for long-term XRP storage: Ledger Nano X
Ledger’s official XRP documentation lists Nano X as supported and explains that the private keys remain isolated on the hardware device. The companion Ledger Wallet app is intended to manage the account, while the device requires physical validation before a transaction is broadcast. That workflow is appropriate for XRP held for years, where minimizing online key exposure matters more than instant access.
Why hardware signing suits a long-term reserve
- Keys stay off the everyday phone or computer. A browser extension, mobile app or infected desktop cannot simply export the hardware-protected key.
- Each transfer has a physical checkpoint. You must inspect and approve the transaction on the device rather than relying solely on a screen that malware could alter.
- The reserve can remain disconnected. You can keep the device stored safely and connect it only when you need to move funds.
- Ownership is independent of an exchange account. You do not need a custodial login to hold or sign for the XRP.
What a hardware wallet does not solve
- Anyone who obtains your recovery phrase can generally recreate the account elsewhere; the device is not a substitute for a secure backup.
- A compromised computer can display a wrong destination address. Read the address and any destination-tag field on the hardware screen before approving.
- Loss, theft or damage to the device is recoverable only if the recovery backup was created correctly and kept private.
- Hardware support can change by model, operating system or companion-app version. Confirm current XRP support before buying and during setup.
Best for everyday XRP Ledger use: Xaman
Xaman is designed specifically for the XRP Ledger and is non-custodial. The XRP Ledger Learning Portal presents it as suitable for daily transactions and XRPL interactions. That focus makes it practical when you regularly send XRP, manage XRPL tokens or connect to decentralized applications.
Why an XRPL-native wallet is convenient
- The wallet’s account and transaction flow is built around XRP Ledger addresses and signing.
- You retain control of the secret keys instead of depositing funds with an exchange.
- Frequent payments do not require plugging in a separate device for every transaction.
- XRPL dApp and token workflows are part of the intended use rather than an afterthought.
The security trade-off
Xaman keeps keys accessible from a mobile device, so the phone becomes part of your security boundary. Use a strong device passcode, current operating-system updates and a reputable app-store installation. Never photograph, email or paste the wallet’s secret recovery information into cloud notes, messaging apps or websites. A mobile wallet is best for an amount you can transact with regularly, not necessarily your entire multi-year reserve.
Trust Wallet: a broader software-wallet option
Trust Wallet can suit someone who wants one general-purpose app for multiple networks and assets. The XRP Ledger Learning Portal names it alongside Xaman as a wallet suitable for daily transactions. Its advantage is breadth: users who already manage several chains may prefer a familiar multichain interface.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe trade-off is that keys are managed in software on an internet-connected device. That creates a different risk profile from a hardware wallet and a less XRPL-specific experience than Xaman. Choose it when multichain convenience is more important than a dedicated XRPL workflow, and keep the balance appropriate for a software wallet.
Uphold and other custodial services: convenient, but not self-custody
Uphold can simplify purchases, sales and fiat conversion because it operates like a service account. This is useful when your main task is moving between XRP and government-issued currency, or when you do not want to manage a recovery phrase immediately.
The defining limitation is custody: the provider holds the keys. Your displayed balance represents a claim handled through the service, and transferring XRP to an external wallet depends on the provider’s withdrawal process, account verification and regional availability. Treat a custodial balance as an exchange position, not as a replacement for a self-custody long-term reserve. If you use one, learn how to withdraw to an address you control and verify the destination details before sending.
Other hardware options: verify support before committing
The XRP Ledger Learning Portal names Trezor as a hardware-wallet option. Hardware support is model- and software-specific, so check the manufacturer’s current XRP documentation and the exact application required for your model before moving funds. Do not assume that support for one device means support for every device in a product family.

How to set up a hardware wallet for XRP
Follow the manufacturer’s current instructions for your exact device. The sequence below focuses on the controls that prevent the most serious mistakes.
- Buy through an official or trusted channel. Avoid second-hand devices or packages that arrive with a prewritten recovery phrase. A legitimate setup generates the backup during initialization.
- Inspect and initialize the device yourself. Install the official companion application, connect the device and complete any authenticity or firmware checks it presents.
- Create the recovery backup offline. Write the words on the supplied or otherwise durable offline medium. Never store the phrase in a screenshot, cloud drive, password-manager note or email.
- Verify the backup when prompted. Enter or confirm the words only on the hardware device or the manufacturer’s approved recovery flow. If a stranger supplied the phrase, stop and reset the device.
- Install the XRP support required by the companion app. Confirm the app recognizes the device and shows the XRP account you intend to use.
- Copy the receive address from the verified wallet screen. Compare the first and last characters on your computer or phone with the device display before sharing the address.
- Send a small test transfer. Wait for it to arrive and confirm the account and amount before moving a larger balance.
- Store the device and backup separately. Someone who finds both can access the funds; someone who finds only the device should not be able to recover the account.
How to use Xaman safely for daily transfers
- Install the genuine application. Use the official app-store listing and check the publisher name. Avoid links sent through unsolicited messages.
- Create or import the account only inside the wallet. Keep the secret recovery information offline and private. Support staff should never need it.
- Enable the strongest phone protections available. Use a long device passcode, biometric protection where appropriate, automatic updates and remote-lock features.
- Keep a spending balance separate from your reserve. Transfer only the amount needed for normal activity to the mobile wallet; leave long-term funds on the hardware wallet.
- Review every signing request. Check the destination address, amount, network and any token or dApp permission before confirming. Reject requests that are unclear or unexpectedly broad.
- Back up before relying on the wallet. Confirm that you can locate the recovery information offline without exposing it to the phone’s camera or cloud backup.
Sending XRP: address and destination-tag checks
An XRP payment normally uses a destination address, but exchanges and other hosted services may also require a destination tag to route the deposit to your account. Omitting a required tag can delay crediting or require a manual recovery process. Before sending to an exchange, copy both the address and the destination tag exactly as shown on that service’s deposit page.
Use this pre-send checklist
- Confirm that the receiving service supports XRP deposits in your region and account type.
- Check whether a destination tag is required, optional or explicitly marked “not required.”
- Compare the address character by character, including the first and last several characters.
- Enter the tag as a number in the wallet’s destination-tag field, not as part of the address.
- Send a small test amount and wait for the receiving service to credit it.
- Only then repeat the transfer for the remainder.
For a self-custody XRPL address that does not use an exchange-style routing system, follow the recipient’s instructions and do not invent a tag. If the wallet or service presents conflicting instructions, stop and contact that service through its published support channel before signing.
Exchange versus hardware wallet for long-term holding
| Question | Custodial exchange or service | Self-custody hardware wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who signs transactions? | The provider | You, using the device |
| How do you access funds? | Account login and provider availability | Device plus recovery backup |
| Fiat conversion | Usually the simpler workflow | Requires a separate exchange or on-ramp when selling |
| Main failure mode | Account restrictions, outages or withdrawal limits | Lost recovery backup, compromised backup or mistaken approval |
| Best role | Trading and temporary balances | Long-term reserves and infrequent transfers |
There is no requirement to choose only one model. A two-wallet arrangement often matches the risks better: hardware storage for the reserve, and Xaman for a controlled spending balance. A custodial account can remain an on-ramp or trading venue rather than the place where every XRP unit is kept.
A practical decision framework
Choose a hardware wallet when…
- Your holding period is measured in years.
- You can store a recovery backup securely and operate a physical signing device.
- Reducing online exposure matters more than immediate access.
- You are comfortable moving funds only after checking the device screen.
Choose Xaman when…
- You make regular XRP Ledger payments.
- You use XRPL tokens or decentralized applications.
- You want non-custodial control without carrying a separate device.
- You can secure a modern phone and protect the recovery information offline.
Choose a multichain software wallet when…
- You need one application for assets on several networks.
- You accept the added exposure of software-managed keys.
- Your balance is sized for a mobile-wallet risk profile.
Use a custodial service when…
- Your priority is buying, selling or converting XRP to fiat.
- You understand that the provider controls the keys.
- You have verified withdrawal procedures and regional availability.
Common mistakes and how to recover
“I lost the device, so the XRP is gone.”
A lost hardware device does not by itself destroy the account if the recovery backup is intact and private. Obtain a genuine replacement or compatible recovery path, restore the account according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and move funds if you suspect the backup was exposed.
“I sent XRP but the exchange has not credited it.”
Check the transaction status in the wallet and confirm that the address and destination tag match the exchange’s deposit instructions. If the tag was missing or incorrect, contact the exchange through its official support process with the transaction details. Do not send a second large transfer until the first issue is resolved.
“A dApp asked me to sign something unexpected.”
Reject the request. Disconnect from the site, review the account’s permissions and verify the project through an independent, trusted channel. Never approve a transaction simply because a pop-up claims it is needed to receive free tokens or unlock an account.
“Someone asked for my recovery phrase.”
Do not provide it. Legitimate wallet support cannot use your secret phrase to troubleshoot an account. Assume any person or site requesting it is attempting to take control of the funds.
Security practices that apply to every XRP wallet
- Separate long-term holdings from money used for daily spending.
- Keep recovery information offline, legible and protected from fire, water and unauthorized access.
- Use a unique password for every custodial account and turn on multifactor authentication where offered.
- Install wallet software and firmware only from the manufacturer’s genuine distribution channel.
- Verify addresses on the signing device when possible, not only in a browser or phone window.
- Make a small test transfer before a large transfer, especially after changing wallets or exchanges.
- Document a recovery plan for trusted heirs without revealing the secret phrase in an unsecured document.
- Ignore urgent giveaways, “support” messages and investment promises that ask you to connect a wallet or disclose keys.
Bottom line: use a two-tier setup
For most XRP holders, the clearest arrangement is a Ledger Nano X or another verified, supported hardware wallet for the long-term reserve, plus Xaman for everyday XRPL activity. Keep only a practical spending amount in the mobile wallet, use a custodial service when fiat conversion is the priority, and treat every destination address and tag as a detail that must be checked before signing. This approach aligns the wallet’s custody model with the job it has to perform instead of forcing one product to handle every risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ledger Nano X safer than Xaman for XRP?
They address different use cases. Ledger Nano X isolates private keys on a hardware device and is intended for long-term storage, while Xaman is a non-custodial mobile wallet optimized for frequent XRP Ledger activity. The safer choice depends on whether minimizing online exposure or maintaining instant daily access is your priority.
Should I keep XRP on an exchange?
Use a custodial exchange or service for buying, selling and fiat conversion if its convenience suits you, but remember that the provider controls the keys. Move long-term holdings to a self-custody hardware wallet if you want independent control.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Do XRP transfers always need a destination tag?
No. Exchanges and other hosted services commonly use destination tags to route deposits to individual accounts, while a self-custody address may not. Follow the receiving service’s exact instructions and test with a small amount.
What happens if I lose my hardware wallet?
The device loss alone does not remove access when your recovery backup is intact and private. Restore the account using a genuine replacement or supported recovery process, then consider moving funds if the backup may have been exposed.
Can I use one wallet for both long-term storage and daily spending?
You can, but separating roles limits exposure. Keep the long-term reserve on a hardware wallet and a smaller spending balance in Xaman or another suitable software wallet.
