For the most reliable large-game downloads, connect the Xbox Series X or Series S by Ethernet, install pending console updates, pause or suspend any running game, and leave enough free storage for installation work. For an unattended download, use Sleep (formerly called Instant-On), not Shutdown (energy saving). Keep Series X|S-optimized games on the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card; use a USB 3.1 drive mainly to store and transfer games.
Those choices improve reliability, but they cannot guarantee a particular Mbps result. Your internet service, Xbox delivery load, wireless conditions, and the console’s unpacking and writing work all affect the number shown on screen.
The recommended settings at a glance
| Task | Recommended choice | Reason and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Network connection | Ethernet when the router is close enough; otherwise the strongest available Wi-Fi | A wired link normally avoids wireless interference and signal variation. Microsoft documents both Ethernet and Wi-Fi; neither guarantees a fixed download speed. |
| Console preparation | Install pending Xbox system updates before diagnosing a slow download | Updates can affect download and installation behavior, and the displayed rate can include local install work. |
| While a large title downloads | Suspend or quit the game shown in the download queue | A running game can compete for network, processor and storage resources. The improvement varies by game and server. |
| Unattended or overnight installation | Sleep/Instant-On, with storage allowed to remain active while the console is off | Microsoft’s getting-started guidance says downloads require the console to be on or in Instant-On behavior. |
| Series X|S-optimized games | Internal SSD or official Storage Expansion Card | These are the high-speed locations intended for games that require Xbox Velocity Architecture storage performance. |
| Large library that is not currently being played | USB 3.1 HDD or SSD as an archive and transfer tier | USB storage is useful for holding and moving games, but many optimized titles must be moved to internal or expansion storage to run. |
Why a download can look slow even with a good connection
The Mbps figure on the Xbox dashboard is not a laboratory measurement of your internet line. A title may be downloading network data while the console also verifies files, unpacks compressed content and writes the result to storage. During those phases, the displayed rate can fall or fluctuate even though the router and internet service are working normally.
Xbox delivery servers can also be busy, and the result depends on your ISP plan, the route to the service, wireless congestion and other traffic in your home. Consequently, a responsible setup guide can improve the conditions around a download but cannot promise a percentage increase or a universal Mbps number.

What Ethernet changes
Use an Ethernet cable when the router is nearby. It removes the radio link between the console and router, making the local connection less sensitive to walls, distance, neighboring networks and wireless congestion. Use a known-good cable and connect it directly to the router or a wired network switch.
If Ethernet is impractical, use the Wi-Fi band and access point that provide the strongest, least-congested signal at the console. Avoid hiding the Xbox behind a television, inside a crowded cabinet or beside devices that obstruct its antennas. Wi-Fi remains a supported option; it is simply more dependent on the local radio environment.
Why testing another DNS server is not a default fix
No cited Xbox guidance establishes a universal DNS setting that makes downloads faster. Changing DNS may alter how a name is resolved, but it does not create additional bandwidth or remove install-time unpacking. Treat DNS changes as a troubleshooting experiment for a specific connectivity problem, not as a guaranteed speed setting.
Prepare the Xbox before starting a large download
- Check the network path. Connect Ethernet if available. Otherwise place the console where it receives the strongest practical Wi-Fi signal, and reduce competing wireless traffic while the title downloads.
- Install pending console updates. Open the Xbox system-update area and apply any available update before comparing speeds. Reboot if the console requests it, then start the game download again.
- Check free space. A large title may need room for its download, unpacked files and an update. If space is tight, uninstall a game you can redownload, move a title to USB storage, or add a Storage Expansion Card. Xbox identifies those as its basic capacity options.
- Close resource-heavy activity. Save work in any game and return to the dashboard. When the queue offers a suspend or quit control for the active game, use it before judging the download.
- Start one important transfer first. If several large downloads and updates are queued, prioritize the title you need. The queue still depends on Xbox service capacity, but removing unnecessary simultaneous work makes the result easier to evaluate.
Do not repeatedly cancel and restart a healthy download simply because its number changes. Restarting can discard useful progress and does not address a rate that is fluctuating because the console is processing files locally.

Settings to use while the game downloads
Suspend the running game
Open the download queue from the Xbox guide or dashboard. If an active game is using the console, choose the displayed Suspend or Quit command. Suspending leaves the game ready to resume; quitting releases more of its memory and background activity.
This can reduce competition for the network, CPU and storage, especially when a game is online or continuously saving data. It is not a fixed-speed switch: some titles and server conditions show little change, while others download more consistently once gameplay stops.
Read the rate as a progress indicator, not a promise
Look at total progress and remaining time over several minutes rather than reacting to a single Mbps reading. A short drop can coincide with verification or writing to the SSD. A sustained stall, an error message or a queue that repeatedly stops is a different problem and should be diagnosed separately.

Place the Xbox on a hard, open surface with its ventilation openings unobstructed. Do not enclose it in a tight cabinet or stack objects over it. The platform uses active cooling and a performance architecture designed around its storage and processor, but the available guidance does not define one universal temperature setting for every room, placement and game. Ventilation is therefore a placement requirement, not a temperature number to tune.

Best power mode for overnight and remote downloads
| Power behavior | Use it when | Download implication | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| On | You are starting the download now or need to watch its progress | Downloads and updates can continue while the console is running. | Uses more power than an off state and leaves the console active. |
| Sleep (formerly Instant-On behavior) | You want a remote or overnight install | Microsoft’s getting-started guidance says downloads require the console to be on or in Instant-On mode. Verify that storage remains enabled while the console is off. | Higher standby consumption than Shutdown (energy saving), depending on the console’s current settings. |
| Shutdown (energy saving) | Minimum off-state power is more important than unattended downloads | It is not the unattended-download mode documented in the cited Xbox guidance. | Microsoft’s Xbox Series X environmental profile says Shutdown cuts power use by 95% when off compared with Sleep. The page’s publication year is not stated. |
Set up an overnight installation
- Start the download while the Xbox is on and confirm that it appears in the queue.
- Open the console’s power-options settings. Current software uses labels such as Sleep and Shutdown (energy saving); wording can change with system updates.
- Select Sleep, or the equivalent Instant-On behavior if your interface still uses that term.
- Check the setting that allows storage to remain active while the console is off. Without that permission, a queued download may not continue as expected.
- Put the console into Sleep and check the queue later. If it did not progress, wake the Xbox, inspect for an error or full drive, and retry after correcting that condition.
Sleep is a convenience choice, not a guarantee that a server will deliver a title at a constant rate overnight. It keeps the console available for the documented download behavior while accepting more standby power than Shutdown.
Where to install large Xbox games
| Storage location | Can it run Series X|S-optimized games? | Best role | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Internal SSD | Yes | Default location for games you play frequently and titles requiring Xbox Velocity Architecture | Capacity is limited, so reserve space for updates and new installs. |
| Official Storage Expansion Card | Yes; Microsoft says it matches internal storage performance | High-speed capacity extension that keeps optimized games ready to play | Sold separately. Exact model, capacity, regional compatibility, seller and current price must be checked before buying. |
| USB 3.1 HDD | Usually not for titles that require the internal-speed path | Economical archive and transfer storage for a large library | Move the game back when Xbox says faster internal or expansion storage is required to launch it. |
| USB 3.1 SSD | Same compatibility rule as USB HDD for optimized titles | Portable archive and transfer tier with quicker copying than many hard drives | It does not turn USB storage into the internal SSD or an official expansion card for games with a high-speed-storage requirement. |
Internal SSD: the play tier
Install frequently played games on the internal SSD. It is the simplest way to ensure that a Series X|S-optimized title has access to the storage performance it expects. Keep some headroom rather than filling the drive to its last few gigabytes; updates may need staging space even when the installed game itself fits.
Official Storage Expansion Card: the closest capacity extension
Microsoft’s product specification describes Storage Expansion Cards for Xbox Series X|S as matching internal storage performance. That makes an official card the appropriate expansion when you want additional capacity without moving optimized games back and forth.

A practical search phrase is “Xbox Series X|S storage expansion card 1TB”. Treat that phrase as a way to find the product category, not as a recommendation of a particular seller or a promise about price or stock. Before ordering, verify that the listing names Xbox Series X|S compatibility, states the capacity, identifies the exact model and comes from a seller serving your region.

USB 3.1 HDD or SSD: the archive and transfer tier
Xbox Wire describes USB 3.1 storage as useful for moving and storing large libraries. A USB drive can hold games you are not currently playing, freeing internal space without deleting the installation. When you want one again, transfer it to the internal SSD or an official expansion card instead of downloading the entire title again.
USB SSDs can make transfers feel quicker than many USB hard drives, but the key distinction is compatibility, not just the drive’s advertised sequential speed. If the Xbox’s file information or installation warning says the game needs faster storage, follow that warning and move the title before launching it.
Decide where each game belongs
- Play every week: internal SSD or official expansion card.
- Keep installed but rarely played: USB 3.1 drive, if the game does not need to run from the high-speed tier.
- Series X|S-optimized title with a storage warning: internal SSD or official expansion card; do not treat USB as a permanent play location.
- Large library and limited internal space: archive completed or inactive titles on USB and transfer them back when needed.
Move a game between drives without deleting it
- Connect the USB 3.1 HDD or SSD to the Xbox and allow the console to format it for games if prompted. Formatting erases existing content on that drive, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- Open My games & apps, highlight the game and open its management options.
- Choose the storage or move/copy command, select the source and destination drives, and start the transfer.
- For a Series X|S-optimized game that cannot run from USB, choose the internal SSD or official expansion card as the destination.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting the drive. Use the console’s safe-removal option when you are taking USB storage away.
Menu names can differ slightly by system update, but the relevant controls are the game’s management page and the storage move/copy action. Moving is generally preferable to uninstalling when you expect to play the title again and want to avoid another full download.
Run large games smoothly after installation
Use Quick Resume deliberately
Quick Resume lets supported games return to a saved suspended state instead of launching from the beginning. Xbox describes it as part of the Xbox Velocity Architecture, with state persisted by the console’s storage system. It is useful when switching among supported games, but it is not a network optimization.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Online games can resume with an expired session or stale connection. If matchmaking, sign-in or a server connection behaves incorrectly after Quick Resume, fully quit that game and launch it again. A clean relaunch refreshes the session; it does not change the game’s storage requirement.
Keep optimized games on the fast tier
If an optimized title is on USB and Xbox reports that it needs faster storage, move it before attempting to play. Repeatedly launching it from an incompatible location will not make the USB drive behave like the internal SSD. Keeping the active group of games on internal or expansion storage also avoids a transfer immediately before a play session.
Protect airflow during long installs and sessions
Large downloads, decompression and extended gameplay all generate heat. Leave open space around the console, keep vents free of dust and avoid an enclosed shelf. If the console displays a warning, shuts down unexpectedly or becomes unusually loud, stop the session, improve airflow and follow the on-screen guidance rather than applying an arbitrary temperature target.

The download is slow but still moving
- Check whether a game is running and suspend or quit it.
- Confirm that the console has installed pending updates.
- Watch progress for several minutes; a low rate can reflect unpacking, verification or writing to storage.
- Use Ethernet or improve the Wi-Fi position if the local signal is weak.
- Check free space and the queue for an update or installation error.
The rate repeatedly drops to zero
- Look for an error, paused queue item or full destination drive.
- Wake the console if it was in Sleep and verify that storage is allowed to remain active while off.
- Test the connection from the Xbox network settings. If the network test fails, resolve the local connection before judging the game service.
- Restart the console only after noting the queue state; a reboot can clear a stuck process, but it cannot guarantee faster server delivery.
The game installed but will not run from USB
Read the game’s storage warning. Series X|S-optimized titles that require Xbox’s high-speed storage path must be moved to the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card. Keep the USB copy as an archive if you need the space.
An online game resumes incorrectly
Fully quit the game, then launch it again. This addresses a stale suspended network session and is a recovery action rather than a promise that every online title will support seamless Quick Resume reconnection.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting a fixed Mbps improvement: no universal percentage is established because service load, ISP conditions, Wi-Fi and install work differ.
- Using Shutdown for an overnight download: the energy-saving mode prioritizes lower off-state consumption, not the unattended-download behavior documented for On or Instant-On/Sleep.
- Filling every byte of the SSD: updates and installation staging need working room.
- Buying a generic USB drive as an optimized-game replacement: USB is a storage and transfer tier; it does not replace the internal-speed path where a title requires it.
- Leaving the console in a sealed cabinet: restricted airflow can undermine stable long sessions and installs.
- Changing DNS first: there is no one-size-fits-all DNS recommendation supported by the cited Xbox material.
A practical setup for most Series X|S owners
- Connect Ethernet, or use the strongest available Wi-Fi location.
- Apply console updates and confirm sufficient free space.
- Start the title with no active game competing for resources; suspend or quit when prompted.
- Keep the download in the queue and judge sustained progress rather than one fluctuating rate.
- Use Sleep/Instant-On for a remote or overnight install, with storage activity enabled while off.
- Install the games you actively play on the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card.
- Use a USB 3.1 HDD or SSD for inactive games, then move a title back when Xbox requires faster storage.
- Keep ventilation clear and relaunch an online game if Quick Resume restores a stale connection.
This arrangement balances dependable downloads, unattended convenience, playable optimized titles and practical library capacity without promising performance that the available evidence cannot guarantee.
