Best current setup: run the Xbox One version through backward compatibility, use your display’s native console output (4K UHD on a 4K TV with Series X; 1440p or 1080p on Series S when supported), set the console to 60 Hz, and enable HDR only if the result looks accurate on your television. The documented Xbox One X version is approximately 1080p at 30 frames per second, and no authoritative source lists a selectable 60-FPS, quality, or performance mode for this release. Series X|S compatibility features are selective, so a newer console does not automatically turn this game into a 4K/60-FPS title.

What version of Ancestors is running on Xbox Series X|S?

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is an Xbox One family game that the Xbox Store lists as playable on Xbox Series X|S. Unless you install a later, dedicated Series X|S build, the console is using backward compatibility rather than a native current-generation graphics package.

For practical settings decisions, use these compatibility baselines:

  • Series X: expect the Xbox One X compatibility path.
  • Series S: Microsoft states that Series S runs the Xbox One S version of backward-compatible games.

That distinction matters because Xbox One X and Xbox One S were different source versions. A Series X can output a 4K signal to a television even when the game is rendering internally at a lower resolution; Series S has the Xbox One S baseline and is not evidence of a 1440p or 4K render target.

Two independent 2019 observations describe the Xbox One X presentation as 30 FPS. Windows Central estimated approximately 1080p and 30 FPS, while Gamernews reported a stable 30 FPS during its Xbox One X test. Those observations are the most concrete performance evidence for the currently documented release. They do not establish a guaranteed Series X|S resolution, HDR mode, or selectable frame-rate option.

Recommended settings at a glance

Setting Series X recommendation Series S recommendation Why
Console resolution 4K UHD when connected to a 4K display; otherwise use the display’s native supported mode 1440p on a supported 1440p display, or 1080p on a 1080p television Matches the output signal to the screen without claiming that the game renders at that resolution
Refresh rate 60 Hz 60 Hz The documented game observations are 30 FPS; 120 Hz output does not create a 120- or 60-FPS mode
HDR Optional; enable only after checking the image Optional; enable only after checking the image Auto HDR is selective, and HDR support for this original release is not established
In-game performance mode No documented toggle No documented toggle No authoritative Xbox settings list identifies quality, resolution, or frame-rate modes
Expected frame-rate target Approximately 30 FPS based on Xbox One X observations Not separately measured in the cited evidence; Xbox One S compatibility is the baseline Do not promise 60 FPS on either console

Best Series X setup

Use 4K UHD as the console output for a 4K television

On Series X connected to a 4K TV, 4K UHD is the sensible output setting. It lets the console and television negotiate a 4K signal, and the TV can apply its normal scaling pipeline. This setting describes the signal leaving the console, not the internal render resolution of Ancestors. The approximately 1080p estimate came from an Xbox One X observation, so selecting 4K UHD should not be presented as proof of native 4K rendering.

If your screen is 1080p, leave the console at 1080p. If it is a 1440p monitor, choose 1440p when that mode is available and stable. Matching the output to the panel avoids an unnecessary conversion step and makes the dashboard and other games look consistent, while the game itself remains governed by its backward-compatible code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the refresh-rate setting at 60 Hz

Set the console to 60 Hz for ordinary television and monitor use. The cited Xbox One X tests describe a 30-FPS presentation, so selecting 120 Hz changes the output timing but does not unlock a 60-FPS or 120-FPS mode in this title. A 120-Hz television can still display a 30-FPS signal, but its higher refresh capability is not evidence that the game is producing extra frames.

Treat HDR as a visual preference, not a performance upgrade

Enable HDR only when the game looks correct on your particular TV. Microsoft documents Auto HDR as a selective backward-compatibility feature; it is not enabled for every game. The cited reviews do not establish native HDR support for the original Xbox release, so compare the image with HDR on and off rather than assuming that HDR is always superior.

Look for clipped highlights, gray-looking blacks, an overly dark jungle, or colors that appear less natural than SDR. If any of those occur, return to SDR. HDR does not raise the frame-rate target, increase internal resolution, or add a missing performance mode.

Best Series S setup

Choose 1440p or 1080p according to the display

Series S uses the Xbox One S version in backward-compatibility scenarios. Set 1440p only when your monitor or television supports that input reliably; use 1080p for a 1080p screen or when 1440p causes handshake problems. This is an output choice, not a statement that the game internally renders at 1440p.

Do not select 4K UHD merely because the television is a 4K model. Series S can send a compatible signal in some display configurations, but the Xbox One S baseline and the absence of a publisher specification mean there is no evidence that this game benefits from a native 4K render path on Series S.

Use 60 Hz and judge motion at the game’s actual cadence

Keep 60 Hz as the normal output. The available measurements cover Xbox One X rather than a separately measured Series S build, so the responsible expectation is a console-compatible 30-FPS experience, not a guaranteed 60 FPS. A 120-Hz monitor can be used, but it will not create additional game frames.

Enable HDR only after a direct comparison

Use the same test described for Series X: compare a representative outdoor scene and a dark interior with HDR enabled and disabled. Retain the setting that preserves shadow detail and natural highlights. Because title-specific HDR support is not documented, SDR is the safer fallback when the HDR image appears washed out or too dim.

How to configure the Xbox video settings

The following procedure changes the console output, not an undocumented game profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings.
  2. Go to General > TV & display options.
  3. Under Display, select Resolution. Choose 4K UHD for a 4K television on Series X, 1440p for a supported 1440p display on Series S, or 1080p for a 1080p screen.
  4. Set Refresh rate to 60 Hz. If the display reports that a mode is unsupported, use the highest stable mode that remains 60 Hz-compatible rather than forcing 120 Hz.
  5. Open Video modes and review the HDR options. If you enable Allow 4K, Allow HDR10, or a similar option, verify the result in the game; disable HDR when the picture is inaccurate.
  6. Return to TV & display options and use the console’s calibration tools if your TV has recently changed picture modes. Calibration can correct black level and brightness but cannot alter the game’s frame-rate cap.

Menu names can vary slightly with Xbox system updates and regional language settings. The important controls are the resolution, refresh rate, and HDR switches inside TV & display options.

Is there a performance mode or quality mode?

No documented Xbox settings list shows a selectable performance, quality, resolution, or frame-rate mode for this release. Do not expect an in-game menu that switches between 4K/30 and 1080p/60, and do not infer such a mode from the console’s 4K or 120-Hz options.

If you open the game’s Options or Settings menus and see no graphics subsection, that is consistent with the available evidence. If a future patch adds a toggle, its own patch notes and menu should take precedence over this baseline.

What “30 FPS” means in practice

A 30-FPS presentation displays a new game frame about every 33.3 milliseconds when pacing is even. It is slower than a true 60-FPS mode, but a stable cadence can still feel consistent during exploration. Windows Central’s approximately 1080p/30-FPS estimate and Gamernews’ stable-30-FPS observation were made on Xbox One X in 2019; they are measurements of that test environment, not a publisher guarantee for every Series X|S configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Series X|S backward compatibility can provide improvements such as higher resolutions, improved texture filtering, more consistent frame rates, faster loading, FPS Boost, or Auto HDR on selected titles. Microsoft describes these as possible, title-by-title features. They should therefore be treated as enhancements to verify, not as automatic upgrades. There is no evidence here that Ancestors receives FPS Boost or a 60-FPS patch in its currently documented form.

Picture settings on the television

Use the TV’s low-latency or Game picture preset when available. It reduces display processing delay; it does not change the game’s internal resolution or frame rate.

  • Disable motion interpolation for this game. Interpolation can create a synthetic “soap opera” look and may add latency or artifacts around foliage and moving animals.
  • Set sharpness near the display’s neutral point. Excessive sharpness adds halos to branches and text without recovering detail that was not rendered.
  • Turn off overscan or enable a screen-fit mode so the entire image is visible.
  • Adjust black level and brightness with the Xbox calibration screen rather than raising contrast to compensate for a dark scene.
  • Use the TV’s native aspect ratio. Stretching a 16:9 image can distort the composition.

These recommendations apply to the display chain. They are not hidden graphics options inside the game.

Series X versus Series S: what difference should you expect?

Comparison point Series X Series S
Backward-compatible source Xbox One X path for the current release Xbox One S version, as stated by Microsoft
Practical output target 4K UHD for a 4K display, or the panel’s native mode 1440p for a supported 1440p display; otherwise 1080p
Internal render resolution Not publisher-specified; an Xbox One X review estimated approximately 1080p Not stated in the cited evidence
Frame-rate evidence Approximately 30 FPS; Gamernews observed a stable 30 FPS on Xbox One X No separate measurement supplied; do not assume 60 FPS
HDR behavior Native support and Auto HDR status are not established for this release Native support and Auto HDR status are not established for this release
Dedicated Series X|S build Not part of the current baseline as of October 18, 2026 Not part of the current baseline as of October 18, 2026

The visible difference can therefore come more from the display and output mode than from a new graphics menu. Series X has the stronger Xbox One X compatibility source, while Series S follows Xbox One S compatibility behavior.

Troubleshooting common problems

The game looks soft on a 4K TV

Confirm that the Xbox resolution is set to 4K UHD and that the TV input accepts the selected mode. If the image remains soft, that does not prove a console fault: the Xbox One X observation estimated approximately 1080p internal rendering. A 4K output can upscale a lower-resolution game image.

The image is too dark or washed out with HDR

Open Settings > General > TV & display options > Video modes and disable HDR10 temporarily. Compare the same scene in SDR. Since title-specific HDR support is not established, keep HDR off if SDR preserves more detail and natural color.

Motion feels uneven

Verify that the console is set to 60 Hz and that the TV’s motion interpolation is off. The game’s documented 30-FPS cadence remains unchanged by selecting 120 Hz. If the display supports variable refresh rate, it may help with the display’s timing in other games, but no evidence shows that it changes this title’s frame-rate target.

Series S will not accept 1440p

Return to TV & display options and choose 1080p, then power-cycle the display and console if necessary. Use the panel’s supported mode; forcing an unsupported signal offers no benefit and can produce a blank screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find a performance toggle

There is no authoritative evidence that the current release includes one. Check for a game update, but do not treat the absence of a toggle as an installation error.

Cloud play considerations

The Xbox Store listing advertises cloud play with eligible Game Pass plans. Cloud play is a separate delivery route from installing the backward-compatible console version. Image quality, latency, and available resolution depend on the network connection and service session, so cloud play should not be used to judge the game’s local rendering resolution or frame-rate mode.

For the most predictable controls and picture, install the game locally when your console has access to it. Use cloud play when convenience matters more than eliminating network latency.

What changes on December 8, 2026?

A report dated October 15, 2026 says a dedicated Xbox Series X|S upgrade or remaster is planned for December 8, 2026. That date is after the October 18, 2026 information cutoff for this guide, so it is not part of the current settings baseline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When that build becomes available, check three things before reusing these recommendations:

  1. Open Manage game and add-ons and confirm which version is installed.
  2. Read the developer’s patch notes for resolution, frame-rate, HDR, and backward-compatibility changes.
  3. Open the new build’s own graphics menu and use its listed modes instead of assuming that the Xbox One settings still apply.

A dedicated release could change the correct output, frame-rate expectation, HDR behavior, or available toggles. Until those specifications are published and the build is installed, the Xbox One compatibility guidance remains the defensible choice.

Practical checklist

  • Identify whether you are running the current Xbox One-compatible release or a later dedicated Series X|S build.
  • Set output resolution to the display’s supported native mode: 4K UHD on a 4K Series X setup, 1440p or 1080p on Series S according to the screen.
  • Use 60 Hz for normal play.
  • Compare HDR and SDR; keep HDR only when highlights, shadows, and color look correct.
  • Do not expect a performance-mode toggle or a guaranteed 60 FPS.
  • Use Game picture mode, disable motion interpolation, and avoid excessive sharpness.
  • If a future Series X|S build is installed, follow its patch notes and graphics menu.
