If your Xbox Series X is connected to a Samsung TV, start with the console’s 4K TV details screen, enable HDMI UHD Color on the TV input you are using, and then select the highest resolution and refresh rate that the capability report confirms. Run Xbox’s HDR calibration afterward. This sequence is more reliable than copying a brightness or contrast preset from another Samsung model.

The supplied title says “Samson,” but Microsoft’s instructions concern Samsung displays. Menu names and HDMI capabilities differ between Samsung models, so an exact model number is required before choosing numerical picture values. The instructions below therefore identify safe settings and decision points without inventing a universal Samsung preset.

What you need before changing anything

Find the full model number printed on the TV, in its support menu, or on the original label. A Samsung television marketed as 4K may have different refresh limits, HDMI ports, HDR behavior, and game-mode controls from another Samsung model. The same model can also provide different capabilities on different HDMI inputs.

Record which HDMI socket the Xbox uses and whether the cable is the one supplied with the console or a certified cable rated for the mode you want. This matters most when targeting 4K at 120 Hz. The Xbox can request a mode only when the display, the particular port, and the cable can carry it.

Acer Nitro 27in 4K 3840x2160 IPS 160Hz DFR 320Hz Gaming Monitor VG270K V4 | 0.5ms, AMD FreeSync Premium, 2xHDMI 2.1, DisplayPort, Speaker, VESA Mountable, Bluelight Filter, Flickerless Technology
  • Quality Visuals: The VG270K 27" IPS monitor with 3840 x 2160 UHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
  • AMD FreeSync Premium Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync Premium, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provides the smoothest gaming experience.
  • Quick Refresh Rate: Different content has different refresh rate and resolution requirements. If you are playing an FPS or racing game, you will need a monitor with a high refresh rate. However, if you are doing office work or streaming videos, a higher resolution will be more beneficial. With DFR technology, users can choose a higher resolution, or a higher refresh rate based on what is suitable for them.
  • Responsive: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter if the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting.
  • ZeroFrame Design: With a Nitro VG270K monitor, you’ll want to see as much of the display as possible. Get more real estate with the near bezel-less design, allowing you to see more and do more. The ZeroFrame design lets you place multiple monitors next to each other for a seamless, almost uninterrupted view.
  • Have the TV model number available before changing contrast, gamma, local dimming, color temperature, or similar controls.
  • Connect the Xbox directly to the TV while troubleshooting, rather than passing it through an audio receiver, switch, or capture device whose HDMI limits may be lower.
  • Turn on the TV and Xbox fully before reading the capability report; a disconnected or incorrectly selected input cannot report the correct combination.

Check what the Xbox and TV actually support

The Xbox capability page is the authoritative first check for this setup. On Xbox Series X, open Settings → General → TV & Display Options → 4K TV details. Read every line on that screen before selecting a resolution or refresh rate.

  1. Confirm that the TV reports 4K support. If 4K is not listed, do not select 4K merely because the television is advertised as a 4K product; investigate the input, cable, and TV setting first.
  2. Check whether HDR is reported. HDR10 is the baseline HDR format Xbox tells users to look for.
  3. Check the refresh combinations. Some displays report 120 Hz only at a lower resolution, while others report 4K at 60 Hz but not 4K at 120 Hz.
  4. Note any warnings about the HDMI port or cable. These warnings describe the active connection, not a theoretical maximum for another port.

Xbox Series X|S support refresh rates up to 120 Hz, along with Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) when the connected display and connection support them. The console’s maximum is not a promise that every Samsung TV, port, or cable will expose 120 Hz.

Capability report Recommended target What it means
4K and 120 Hz reported together 4K UHD at 120 Hz Use the compatible high-bandwidth HDMI input and a certified cable. Continue with HDR calibration and game mode.
4K reported, 120 Hz absent 4K UHD at 60 Hz Keep 4K/60 rather than forcing an unsupported refresh rate. The limitation may be the display model, input, or cable.
120 Hz reported only at a lower resolution Choose between 4K resolution and the lower-resolution 120-Hz mode The TV’s bandwidth or panel design does not provide both objectives on this connection.
HDR not reported Use SDR until the connection is corrected Check the TV input setting, port, and cable before trying HDR switches.

Enable HDMI UHD Color on the Samsung input

Samsung uses an input option called HDMI UHD Color to open the HDMI port’s enhanced color and bandwidth behavior. On the television, go to Settings → Picture → Expert Settings (or Picture Options) → HDMI UHD Color, then turn it on for the exact HDMI port connected to the Xbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The label and location vary by model. If your menu does not match this path, use the TV’s manual and search for HDMI UHD Color or an equivalent enhanced-input setting. Enabling it on a different socket has no effect on the Xbox connection. After changing the option, return to the Xbox’s 4K TV details page and read the report again.

Do not enable the option on every input as a troubleshooting shortcut if other devices become unstable. Apply it to the Xbox input first, verify the result, and then configure other sources individually.

Set the Xbox output to the highest confirmed mode

Once the capability report is correct, open Settings → General → TV & Display Options. Choose 4K UHD for resolution when the report confirms it. Set the refresh rate to 120 Hz only when 4K/120 appears as a supported combination; otherwise leave the console at the highest confirmed rate, commonly 60 Hz for a 4K connection.

There is no benefit in forcing an unavailable mode. An unsupported selection can produce a blank screen, an unstable signal, or a fallback to a lower mode that obscures the original problem. If the screen goes blank after a change, wait for the Xbox’s automatic recovery prompt; if it does not return, reconnect the console to a known-compatible input and select a mode shown on the capability page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When testing, change one variable at a time. First verify 4K at 60 Hz, then test 120 Hz if the report permits it. This isolates a bandwidth problem from an HDR problem and makes it clear which change caused a failure.

Turn on HDR10 and decide how to use Auto HDR

HDR10 is the baseline HDR mode Xbox directs users to seek on a compatible television. In Settings → General → TV & Display Options, enable the HDR option only after the capability page reports HDR support and the Samsung input is configured correctly.

Xbox’s Auto HDR can add HDR enhancements to compatible games that were originally released in standard dynamic range (SDR). It is an Xbox processing option, not a substitute for a TV that can receive HDR. Leave it enabled when the display reports support and the resulting image looks correct. If a particular title appears visibly wrong after Auto HDR processing, disable Auto HDR for troubleshooting and compare the game in its original SDR presentation.

HDR and 120 Hz are separate capabilities. A TV may accept HDR at 4K/60 but not at 4K/120, or it may offer 120 Hz only at a lower resolution. Follow the combinations shown on the capability page rather than assuming that enabling one feature guarantees the other.

  1. Leave the Samsung in the picture mode you intend to use for games before starting. Switching modes afterward can change the result.
  2. Adjust the first pattern only until the instructions’ reference detail is visible as directed. Do not brighten the image simply to make every hidden shade appear.
  3. Use the next pattern to set the highlight level without washing out the brightest reference areas. The goal is to preserve the pattern distinctions the Xbox shows, not to maximize a menu number.
  4. Complete every pattern and accept the calibration. Re-run it if you change the TV’s game mode, move the Xbox to another HDMI input, or change the output resolution/refresh combination.

Xbox also provides a general TV calibration tool for brightness, sharpness, and contrast. Use it only after the HDR-specific pass and make adjustments while watching the test patterns, not by copying values from a different Samsung model. The same numerical setting can produce a different result on another panel or in another picture mode.

Use the Samsung game or low-latency mode

Enable the Samsung mode intended for gaming or low latency, using the name supplied by your model. Samsung’s controls and available labels differ, so this guide cannot provide one universal path or number. The purpose of this mode is to shorten display processing; it may also expose separate controls for VRR, ALLM, or motion processing.

Keep the mode consistent while calibrating. If the TV automatically switches modes when it detects HDR, perform the Xbox HDR calibration after that switch has occurred. Changing to a cinema, filmmaker, or standard mode later can alter tone mapping and invalidate the visual balance you set for games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VRR and ALLM are useful only when both the Xbox connection and the TV support them. If the capability page does not report a feature, do not infer support from a marketing label elsewhere on the television. Motion-smoothing controls are not a replacement for VRR and can add processing that is undesirable for responsive play.

How to get 4K at 120 Hz working

Four conditions must align: the Xbox must be set to 4K UHD, the Samsung must report 4K/120 support, the Xbox must use the HDMI input that provides that bandwidth, and the cable must be suitable for the signal. A compatible HDMI 2.1 input and a certified high-speed cable are generally required for 4K/120.

  1. Move the Xbox to the Samsung HDMI socket identified in the manual as supporting the highest bandwidth or HDMI 2.1 features.
  2. Turn on HDMI UHD Color for that socket.
  3. Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if the existing cable cannot pass the required mode.
  4. Power-cycle the TV and Xbox, then reopen 4K TV details.
  5. Select 4K UHD and 120 Hz only if both are now listed together.

If the report still shows only 60 Hz, the TV model or that specific input may not provide 4K/120. Some displays reserve 120 Hz for lower resolutions. In that case, 4K/60 is the honest maximum for that connection; forcing 120 Hz cannot create missing hardware support.

Why the Xbox shows only 60 Hz

The television or port is limited to 4K/60

A 4K panel can still have a 60-Hz HDMI input. Check the model’s manual and compare the exact socket in use with the socket listed for high refresh. If no port reports 4K/120 on the Xbox, retain 4K/60.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDMI UHD Color is off or applied to another input

Return to the Samsung menu and verify the option on the Xbox-connected port. Recheck the Xbox capability page after changing it; do not rely on the TV’s general product description.

The cable cannot carry the requested mode

Replace an unverified or older cable with a certified high-speed cable appropriate for 4K/120, then restart both devices and run the capability check again. A cable that works at 4K/60 can still fail when bandwidth demand rises.

An intermediary device is restricting the signal

Temporarily connect the Xbox directly to the TV. If 120 Hz appears, the receiver, switch, splitter, or capture device in the original path is the limiting component.

The console is running a lower-resolution 120-Hz mode

Some displays expose 120 Hz only below 4K. Decide whether your priority is 4K detail or the higher refresh rate, and select the combination the capability page confirms.

If highlights clip or shadow detail disappears in the Xbox patterns, repeat the calibration carefully and follow the pattern instructions instead of raising every brightness control. If the image is still wrong, test with Auto HDR disabled in a compatible SDR game to separate TV HDR handling from Auto HDR processing.

Do not apply a numeric contrast, gamma, local-dimming, or color-temperature recipe from another Samsung model. Panel brightness, tone mapping, firmware behavior, room lighting, and picture mode all affect the result, and no model-independent numeric preset is established here.

What to compare when choosing or evaluating a Samsung model

If you are deciding whether a particular Samsung display is suitable for Xbox Series X, compare the items below in the model’s documentation and in the Xbox capability report. The useful question is not simply whether the television says 4K or HDR, but which combination it delivers through the port you will use.

Comparison point Why it matters for Xbox Series X What to verify
Resolution and refresh combinations Determines whether you can choose 4K/120 or must choose 4K/60 or lower-resolution 120 Hz. Look for the exact combinations reported by 4K TV details.
HDMI 2.1 availability 4K/120 commonly depends on HDMI 2.1 hardware. Identify the specific HDMI socket, not just the television series.
HDR peak brightness and tone mapping Affects how the Xbox calibration patterns are rendered and whether highlights retain detail. Use the model’s measured or documented behavior and verify the result with the Xbox patterns.
VRR and ALLM Can coordinate refresh timing and automatic low-latency behavior when supported end to end. Check the capability page and the Samsung manual for the active input.
Input lag in game mode Determines responsiveness while gaming. Use measurements for the exact model and mode; do not assume another Samsung model behaves identically.
Shadow-detail behavior during HDR calibration Shows whether dark areas remain distinguishable without lifting blacks excessively. Judge the Xbox calibration patterns in the game mode you will actually use.

A repeatable setup workflow

Use this order whenever you install the Xbox on a new Samsung display or move it to another HDMI socket:

  1. Identify the exact TV model and the HDMI socket intended for the Xbox.
  2. Connect the Xbox directly with a suitable, certified cable.
  3. Enable HDMI UHD Color on that socket.
  4. Read Settings → General → TV & Display Options → 4K TV details.
  5. Select 4K UHD and the highest refresh rate that the report confirms together.
  6. Enable HDR10-related options when HDR is reported; test Auto HDR with a compatible game.
  7. Switch the Samsung to its gaming or low-latency mode.
  8. Run Setup → Calibrate HDR for Games, followed by the general TV calibration tool if needed.
  9. Test one game at a time and record any change you make, so you can undo a setting that causes a worse result.

When a capability disappears after moving cables or changing inputs, repeat the capability check instead of assuming the console has changed. The report reflects the active path and is the quickest way to distinguish a setting problem from a hardware limit.
