For the most consistent 60 fps experience on Xbox Series S, set the television to Game Mode, use the Xbox’s highest stable resolution at 60 Hz, enable ALLM and VRR when both the TV and game support them, and select a game’s Performance mode when available. A 120 Hz output is useful for titles with a genuine 120 fps mode, but it cannot make a 30 fps or 60 fps game render more frames. The HDMI port, cable and TV input settings must also support the signal you select.

What to set first for stable 60 fps

Start with a reliable baseline before experimenting with 120 Hz, HDR or advanced picture processing. This setup targets games designed to run at 60 fps and avoids introducing display features that can cause compatibility problems.

  1. On the TV, select the HDMI input connected to the Xbox Series S.
  2. Turn on the TV’s Game Mode, Game Optimizer or equivalent low-latency picture preset.
  3. On Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & display options.
  4. Choose the highest resolution that the TV can sustain reliably. If the set is limited to 60 Hz, select 60 Hz.
  5. Enable Allow auto-low-latency mode (ALLM) if the TV supports it.
  6. Enable VRR only after confirming that the TV and the game support it without instability.
  7. In each game that offers graphics presets, choose Performance when a steadier 60 fps is more important than maximum resolution or visual effects.

Microsoft documents 60 Hz as a compatibility fallback when combinations of VRR and 120 Hz cause display problems. If the picture flickers, drops out or repeatedly reconnects, return to 60 Hz before changing other settings.

Why Game Mode and ALLM matter

Game Mode removes avoidable processing

Televisions often apply noise reduction, sharpening, frame interpolation and other processing in their standard picture modes. Those steps can add delay between an Xbox command and the image appearing on screen. Game Mode is the TV’s intended low-latency path: it minimizes processing while preserving the panel’s native refresh behavior.

Use Game Mode on the exact HDMI input used by the console. Many televisions save picture settings per input, so enabling it on a different HDMI socket does not necessarily change the Xbox input.

ALLM switches the TV automatically

Auto Low Latency Mode lets the console signal the TV to enter its low-latency mode when a game starts. Xbox Series X|S support ALLM, but the TV must also implement the feature. If the TV has an option such as Allow auto-low-latency mode, leave it enabled; if automatic switching is unreliable, select Game Mode manually.

Turn off motion interpolation for gaming

Motion smoothing, motion interpolation and similarly named options create synthetic frames between rendered frames. They do not increase the game’s actual frame rate and can add processing delay or visible artifacts. Disable them for competitive or timing-sensitive play. This is separate from VRR: VRR changes when the display refreshes, while interpolation invents intermediate pictures.

Xbox display settings explained

Resolution

In Settings > General > TV & display options, select the highest resolution that remains stable through the entire HDMI path. A higher output resolution does not guarantee a higher in-game frame rate; a title may render internally at a different resolution or cap its frame rate according to its graphics mode.

If changing resolution causes a blank screen or an unstable signal, wait for the Xbox to restore the previous setting or reconnect it directly to the TV and test again. Use the TV’s enhanced HDMI setting when the model requires it for higher-bandwidth formats.

Refresh rate

Set a TV limited to 60 Hz to 60 Hz. Series S supports output up to 120 Hz, but 120 Hz should be selected only when the TV, HDMI port and cable can accept it and the games you play expose a 120 fps mode.

A 120 Hz output does not force a 30 fps or 60 fps title to render at 120 fps. The game engine, its patch and its chosen graphics preset determine the actual frame-rate cap. In many titles, Performance mode is the setting intended to target a steadier 60 fps.

4K TV details

Open Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details to see which capabilities the Xbox detects. This built-in screen can reveal why 120 Hz, VRR or a high-resolution mode is unavailable. A capability may be unchecked because the connected HDMI port is limited, the TV’s enhanced mode is disabled, an intermediate device does not pass the signal, or the cable connection is not negotiating correctly.

When 120 Hz is worth enabling

Microsoft states that Xbox Series X|S supports refresh rates up to 120 Hz, along with ALLM and VRR. Microsoft’s current Series X|S specifications also describe frame-rate capability up to 120 fps. Those figures describe the platform’s output and capability ceiling, not a promise that every Series S game runs at 120 fps.

Choose 120 Hz when all three conditions are true:

  • The TV has a native 120 Hz panel and exposes that mode on the HDMI input connected to the Xbox.
  • The HDMI cable and every device in the path can carry the selected signal.
  • The game offers a 120 fps mode, or you specifically want the display’s faster refresh timing for supported titles.

Epic’s Rocket League support guidance tells players to verify 120 Hz in the Xbox display details. It also notes that Series S does not include an HDMI 2.1 cable, so the cable supplied with another device may not be suitable for every 120 Hz configuration.

If your games are capped at 60 fps, a 120 Hz television can still be useful when it provides VRR and a good low-latency mode, but it will not double the frame rate by itself. A 60 Hz TV remains adequate for games capped at 60 fps.

How VRR changes the experience

Variable Refresh Rate synchronizes the display’s refresh timing with the frame delivery from the console. When a game’s frame time fluctuates, VRR can reduce visible tearing and make those changes less distracting. It cannot create frames that the game does not render and cannot turn a 30 fps title into a 60 fps title.

Enable VRR safely

  1. Enable the TV’s VRR, FreeSync or Adaptive Sync option for the Xbox HDMI input.
  2. On Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & display options and enable the VRR option available for the detected display.
  3. Launch a game known to support VRR and check for flicker, black screens or signal drops.
  4. If the image is unstable, disable VRR first. If problems continue with 120 Hz, set the Xbox to 60 Hz as the compatibility fallback.

VRR support is not universal across games, and the useful operating range depends on the television. When comparing TVs, check the manufacturer’s stated VRR range and confirm that Xbox VRR is supported on the specific HDMI ports you plan to use.

HDR: improve the picture without changing frame rate

HDR affects brightness and color, not the number of frames rendered per second. Enable it only when the TV handles HDR correctly and the game’s HDR image looks properly calibrated.

  1. Put the TV in its gaming picture mode first.
  2. Enable HDR for the Xbox HDMI input if the TV supports it.
  3. On Xbox, run the built-in HDR calibration tool and follow its black-level and peak-brightness prompts.
  4. Check a game’s own HDR calibration screen, because individual titles can use different sliders and target values.

If HDR makes the image washed out, excessively dark or incorrectly tinted, disable it temporarily and verify the TV’s HDR mode and firmware before changing frame-rate settings. Do not use HDR as a remedy for stutter; it addresses image range and color rather than frame pacing.

HDMI cable, port and passthrough requirements

Microsoft recommends High Speed HDMI or Premium High Speed HDMI cabling for Series S connections and warns that passthrough equipment must support the desired signal. A cable upgrade cannot raise a game’s frame-rate cap, but an unsuitable cable or port can prevent the Xbox from negotiating 4K, 120 Hz or VRR.

Use the direct connection for diagnosis

  1. Disconnect receivers, capture devices, HDMI switches and soundbars temporarily.
  2. Connect the Xbox directly to a high-bandwidth HDMI port on the TV.
  3. Use a certified High Speed or Premium High Speed HDMI cable.
  4. Check 4K TV details again and test the desired resolution, refresh rate and VRR combination.
  5. Reconnect passthrough equipment one component at a time, confirming that each device supports the same signal.

Many TVs reserve their highest-bandwidth features for particular HDMI sockets. Look for the port identified by the TV manual as supporting enhanced bandwidth, then enable the TV’s Enhanced, HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1 input mode when the model requires that setting.

Fixes for common Series S display problems

“Why is my Xbox Series S stuck at 60 Hz?”

  • Confirm that the TV panel is actually 120 Hz; a 60 Hz panel cannot accept a true 120 Hz output.
  • Move the Xbox to the TV port that supports the required bandwidth.
  • Enable the port’s enhanced HDMI mode.
  • Replace an uncertified or damaged cable with a certified High Speed or Premium High Speed HDMI cable.
  • Remove passthrough equipment and test the direct connection.
  • Open Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details to see which capability is failing detection.
  • Update the TV firmware, restart both devices and test again.

If the TV still reports only 60 Hz, that may be the correct limit of its panel, HDMI implementation or current input configuration. Do not select 120 Hz by guessing; use the capability indicators shown by the Xbox.

120 Hz or VRR causes flicker or a black screen

First return the Xbox to 60 Hz. Microsoft identifies 60 Hz as the fallback when a VRR/120 Hz combination creates compatibility problems. Then test the variables separately: 60 Hz with VRR off, 60 Hz with VRR on, 120 Hz with VRR off, and finally 120 Hz with VRR on. This isolates whether the problem comes from refresh rate, VRR, the TV port or an intermediate device.

The game still feels uneven at 60 fps

  • Check the game’s graphics menu for Performance, Quality or Resolution modes and select Performance when available.
  • Confirm that motion interpolation is disabled on the TV.
  • Enable VRR if the game and display support it and the connection is stable.
  • Remember that a game can have frame-time fluctuations even when its advertised target is 60 fps; 120 Hz output cannot correct a title that does not render additional frames.

The picture tears when VRR is disabled

Tearing can appear when the console and display refresh at different times. Bethesda’s display guidance notes that disabling VRR can permit tearing in supported titles. Re-enable VRR when the TV supports it reliably; if VRR introduces flicker or dropouts, keep it disabled and use the stable 60 Hz configuration instead.

Choosing a TV for Series S

Use the following criteria rather than judging a TV by its advertised resolution alone.

Criterion What to verify Why it matters
Native panel refresh rate 60 Hz or 120 Hz panel, not merely a motion-processing number A 60 Hz panel is suitable for games capped at 60 fps; a 120 Hz panel is required for supported 120 fps modes.
VRR support VRR range and explicit Xbox compatibility VRR can make frame-rate dips less distracting and reduce visible tearing, but it cannot add frames.
HDMI bandwidth Which HDMI ports expose the required bandwidth and whether an Enhanced mode must be enabled The port determines whether 4K60, 1440p120 or VRR is available.
Game Mode and ALLM Measured input lag in Game Mode and whether ALLM switches reliably Low-latency behavior affects control response and convenience.
HDR quality How the TV handles HDR brightness, black levels and calibration HDR changes picture range and color; it does not change frame rate.

A 4K/60 Hz TV is an appropriate match for games capped at 60 fps. A 120 Hz VRR TV with ALLM is the better fit when you play titles that expose 120 fps modes or want smoother handling of frame-rate dips. In either case, confirm the exact HDMI port and cable requirements rather than assuming every socket has identical capabilities.

A practical 60 fps setup checklist

  • TV input connected directly to the Xbox during initial setup.
  • Game Mode or Game Optimizer enabled on that input.
  • Motion smoothing and frame interpolation disabled.
  • Xbox resolution set to the highest stable value.
  • Xbox refresh rate set to 60 Hz for a 60 Hz TV, or 120 Hz only when the complete path supports it.
  • ALLM enabled when available.
  • VRR enabled only after a stable test with a supported game.
  • HDR calibrated after the TV is already in gaming mode.
  • Certified High Speed or Premium High Speed HDMI cable in use.
  • 4K TV details checked whenever an option is greyed out.

What the Series S can and cannot guarantee

Xbox Series X|S hardware supports up to 120 Hz output, ALLM and VRR, and the Series X|S family is specified for frame rates up to 120 fps. Those are platform capabilities. Actual performance varies by game, patch and graphics setting. There is no authoritative portfolio-wide percentage of Series S games that sustain 60 fps, so use each game’s own Performance or Quality options and current patch notes as the deciding evidence.

The reliable path is therefore straightforward: use Game Mode, select a stable 60 Hz baseline, enable VRR and ALLM when the TV supports them, and move to 120 Hz only for a verified 120 fps title and a compatible HDMI path. Hardware settings can remove display bottlenecks, but they cannot override a game’s frame-rate cap.
