There is no single best Xbox role-playing game for every player. The right pick depends on whether you want story and dialogue, an expansive world to explore, action-focused play, or a less familiar narrative style. This guide covers games listed for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; availability and compatibility depend on the specific game and edition.
How to choose an Xbox RPG
Start with the kind of experience you want rather than a universal ranking. The Microsoft Store’s Xbox role-playing category includes a broad range of titles, and its Game Pass-filtered listings distinguish games included with the service from those offered for purchase. Treat the catalog as a live availability check, not a permanent list or price promise: confirm the game’s current regional listing and whether your subscription plan includes it.

- Story and dialogue: Look for a game whose narrative style and character conversations appeal to you.
- Exploration: Decide whether you want a large world to roam or a more directed journey.
- Combat: Consider whether you prefer action-focused encounters or another combat approach; check the game’s official listing for details.
- Player choice: Check how much the game emphasizes decisions and their consequences if that is important to you.
- Play format: Confirm whether you want a solo-oriented experience or one with multiplayer elements.
- Console and edition: Verify the supported Xbox generation and whether you are buying a digital or disc edition.
Xbox RPGs to consider by play style
These are options for different tastes, not objective winners. GamesRadar+ included several of them in its 2026 Xbox RPG roundup, while the Microsoft Store’s role-playing category currently lists titles such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition, and The Witcher 3. Listings and availability can change.

For a story-led or distinctive narrative
GamesRadar+’s 2026 selection includes Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Pentiment, and Persona 5 Royal as editorial examples for players drawn to narrative and character-focused experiences. These are not interchangeable kinds of stories; check each game’s Store page for its Xbox edition, supported consoles, and current availability before choosing.

For an expansive-world adventure
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition and The Witcher 3 appear in the Microsoft Store’s Xbox RPG category, while Cyberpunk 2077 is another listed option. They are candidates for players prioritizing a substantial setting to explore, but confirm the edition and console generation on the individual product page rather than assuming every release or add-on works on every Xbox.
For a different setting or format
GamesRadar+ also names Pentiment, Fable Anniversary, and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty among its 2026 picks. These examples show why “best” depends on the world and format a player wants. Check whether a listing is a full game, an edition, or an add-on, and confirm what is needed to use it.

For an RPG to buy or check through Game Pass
The Microsoft Store’s role-playing category includes Baldur’s Gate 3 and other named games, and its Game Pass-filtered view marks some titles as included while showing purchase listings for others. Inclusion is title-, plan-, region-, and time-dependent. Open the current Store listing for the exact title and edition, then verify that your subscription plan includes it before relying on access.

Xbox says most Xbox One games are playable on Xbox Series X|S, but compatibility is not universal across every historic Xbox title. For supported backward-compatible games, features such as FPS Boost, higher resolution, or Auto HDR may be available; the specific enhancements vary by game. Xbox also says it put “more than 500,000 hours of testing” into testing and meeting quality standards for Xbox Series X|S gameplay. That statement describes Xbox’s overall testing effort, not a guarantee that every game or feature was tested on every configuration. See Xbox’s backward compatibility guidance.
Rank #3

Xbox Series S plays digital games only. A compatible disc-based game requires an Xbox Series X with a disc drive. Before buying a physical copy, check that the console has a drive and that the particular disc edition supports the console you own. If you are buying digitally, check the exact product page for supported console generation and edition.
