You can play online multiplayer on Xbox without a paid Game Pass subscription when the game is configured as free-to-play and your account’s multiplayer privileges allow it. Microsoft’s platform policy permits free-to-play titles, demos, and betas to enable multiplayer for players who are not Game Pass subscribers, while still requiring the game to check parental controls and other account restrictions.
The Microsoft Store’s current top-free online-multiplayer catalog contains 147 listings, and its cross-platform filter contains 95. Rather than reproduce every entry, this guide narrows the list to defensible starting points across battle royale, shooters, racing, sports, social play, and co-op or MMO-style games. Store labels, regional availability, and inclusion status can change, so confirm the individual Xbox page before installing.
How Xbox multiplayer works without Game Pass
Free-to-play multiplayer is the key distinction. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit policy says free-to-play titles, demos, and betas can be configured to permit multiplayer for players who are not Game Pass subscribers. The same policy requires those games to continue checking multiplayer privileges, so family settings, privacy choices, age restrictions, and other account controls still apply.

Battle royale: Fortnite Battle Royale, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, and Apex Legends
Choose this group when the appeal is a large competitive match in which positioning, survival, and the final standings matter. Fortnite Battle Royale, PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, and Apex Legends are all present as free-to-play entries in the current catalog. Their shared label does not mean they are interchangeable: compare each game’s camera perspective, squad structure, pace, and competitive intensity on its current store and game pages before committing to a large download.
Fortnite deserves a label check because Microsoft’s merchandising system can show it under Included with Game Pass even while the catalog identifies the free-to-play entry. That merchandising label is not, by itself, proof that a Game Pass subscription is required for the free multiplayer mode.
Hero and arena shooters: Marvel Rivals, THE FINALS, Halo Infinite, and Splitgate: Arena Reloaded
These are the natural starting points for players who want objective-based or arena-style shooting rather than a battle-royale format. Marvel Rivals and Splitgate: Arena Reloaded are explicitly marked Free in the catalog. THE FINALS and Halo Infinite also appear among the top-free listings, but their store presentation can vary, so open the individual product page and read the current access and purchase disclosures.
Use the game descriptions to check whether the perspective, team size, and match rhythm suit your group. A competitive shooter can be a good fit for a regular team and a poor fit for someone looking for short, low-pressure sessions; the catalog itself does not provide queue-time or population data.

Co-op and MMO-style play: Destiny 2 and Warframe
Destiny 2 and Warframe are the strongest choices in this list when you want progression and cooperative play rather than a single stand-alone match. Both are marked Free in the current catalog. Their free entry points coexist with paid expansions or optional content, so separate the base download and multiplayer access from the content you may later decide to buy.
These games can demand more storage, time, and system familiarity than a quick party title. Before installing, check the current product page for edition details and add-on listings, especially if friends are playing a particular expansion or season.

Trackmania and Disney Speedstorm provide free racing options in the catalog. Trackmania also appears in the cross-platform filter, which is helpful for mixed-device groups. Check whether the current edition, events, and online features match what your friends own; racing titles can change their content and access labels over time.
Sports: eFootball and UFL
eFootball and UFL are the clearest free choices for a football-focused group. Both are marked Free, and both appear in the cross-platform catalog. A free base game can still offer optional purchases, so inspect the product page and in-game store disclosures if you want a no-spend experience.
Competitive fighting and card play: Brawlhalla and Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel
Brawlhalla is marked Free and is suited to players looking for competitive platform fighting. Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel appears in the cross-platform catalog for players seeking a card-based competitive format. Their genres differ sharply, so use the game’s current description and rating to confirm that the rules, communication features, and session style work for your group.

Free-to-play, Game Preview, trial, and “Included with Game Pass” are different labels
Read the store language carefully. A title can be free-to-play, a preview build, a trial, or a paid product promoted through Game Pass. Those categories affect how much content is available and whether the access terms can change.
- Free: The catalog presents the base title as free to download or play. Optional purchases may still be offered.
- Game Preview: The title is an early-access or preview product. skate. is listed this way, so treat its features and availability as subject to change.
- Trial or demo: Access may be limited by time, content, or progression. Do not assume that a trial provides the same multiplayer access as the full free-to-play release.
- Included with Game Pass: This is a merchandising label for subscription access and does not automatically describe the separate free-to-play status of a title. Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, Rocket League, Halo Infinite, Overwatch, and THE FINALS can appear with this kind of label even though the catalog also identifies free-to-play entries. Verify the individual page.
What “free” does and does not cover
Microsoft marks many entries with “Offers in-app purchases.” Avoid treating the absence of a Game Pass fee as a promise that every item is free. Cosmetics, battle passes or season passes, expansions, upgrades, and other optional content can be sold separately.
For a no-spend setup, decide what your group means by free before installing. If it means “no monthly multiplayer subscription,” the free-to-play catalog may meet that requirement. If it means “no purchases of any kind,” review the in-game purchase controls and family settings as well as the store disclosure.
Step-by-step: find a suitable game on Xbox
- Open the Microsoft Store on your Xbox and browse the top-free online-multiplayer category.
- For a mixed-device group, apply the store’s cross-platform filter. The current filtered catalog contains 95 items, including the games listed above.
- Open the individual product page rather than relying only on a category tile. Confirm whether it is marked Free, Game Preview, a trial, or another access type.
- Read the multiplayer, age-rating, region, and in-app-purchase information shown for your account and location.
- Check the title’s current description with your group. Match the genre and expected session style to the players: battle royale, arena shooter, racing, sports, social play, or co-op.
- Install the game and launch it with the Xbox account that will play. If the account is managed by a family organizer, confirm that multiplayer and communication privileges are enabled.
- Invite friends only after each player has verified the same title and edition. Updates, previews, and regional listings can create mismatched versions.
Troubleshooting when multiplayer still asks for Game Pass
The store page is ambiguous
Return to the individual product page and read the current access wording. Category pages can combine free-to-play entries with Game Pass merchandising, so a tile alone is not enough evidence.

Check whether the listing says Game Preview, demo, or trial. Preview and trial access can have different multiplayer rules from a full free-to-play release. If the listing does not clearly describe the access you need, choose a title explicitly marked Free instead.

A child or managed account cannot join
Free multiplayer still has to respect account privileges. Ask the family organizer to review multiplayer, communication, age, and privacy settings. Changing the subscription will not override a parental restriction.
The game launches but requests a purchase
Separate the base multiplayer access from optional content. A prompt for a cosmetic item, season pass, expansion, or upgrade is consistent with a free-to-play model; it does not necessarily mean the base multiplayer mode requires Game Pass.
Friends cannot connect across devices
Confirm that the title appears in the current cross-platform catalog and that every player is using the same game and edition. Cross-platform availability can change with updates, platform support, or regional storefront differences.

The 147-item top-free catalog count and 95-item cross-platform count are snapshots of the Microsoft Store captured in 2026, not permanent limits. Storefront rankings, labels, regional availability, age ratings, and in-app-purchase disclosures can change. A title that is free today can add a preview label, change its supported platforms, or alter its content model later.
