You follow Manny Calavera, a travel agent for the dead, through four years in the afterlife. The remaster improves the original presentation with upgraded visuals, sound and controls. Those changes matter because the 1998 design often asks you to inspect scenes, combine clues and interpret character dialogue rather than react quickly. Wasteland Remastered: the historical choice-driven RPG
Wasteland Remastered is for players who want to see where a major branch of post-apocalyptic role-playing came from. Xbox describes the original as a 1988 release that brought the post-apocalypse to video games and inspired a genre. The remaster places you in command of Desert Rangers in a radioactive 2087, with a squad campaign in which decisions can alter the world.

The central idea is that actions in one period can affect another. Instead of treating every room as an isolated puzzle box, the game asks you to think across time, characters and inventories. Full Throttle Remastered works when you want a complete experience with attitude but do not want to begin a long RPG. Xbox Wire describes the 1995 graphic adventure as the story of biker-gang leader Ben Throttle, whose gang is pulled into motorcycles, mayhem and murder.
The game is structured like a road movie. Scenes, dialogue and set pieces move the story forward, while puzzles and confrontations provide the interactive rhythm. Its biker imagery and hard-edged humor give it a different flavor from the supernatural bureaucracy of Grim Fandango or the broad cartoon absurdity of Day of the Tentacle.
Who should choose it
- Choose it for a focused, character-led adventure rather than an open-ended campaign.
- Choose it if music, visual attitude and cinematic pacing matter as much as puzzle complexity.
- Skip it as a first pick if you specifically want deep combat systems or a large explorable map; that is not its purpose.
Tim Schafer summarized the original LucasArts order in an official Xbox podcast discussion as “Tentacle first … then Full Throttle … then Grim,” referring to the 1993, 1995 and 1998 releases. That sequence is useful if you want to explore the creative progression, but the games do not require a shared story order. CULTIC: a modern bridge to retro-FPS cult games
CULTIC is the choice when you want the feel of an old-school shooter without requiring an actual 1990s release. Xbox’s September 2026 Indie Selects feature presents it as a modern retro FPS with explosive action and survival-horror tension. Its design target is not simply low-resolution nostalgia. The game uses a dark cult setting, aggressive firefights and deliberate combat decisions to create pressure. You can move quickly, but success still depends on choosing when to attack, when to reposition and how to manage the danger created by the environment and enemies. That combination makes it a useful counterpoint to the slower puzzle adventures in this list.

Streaming quality, controller support and regional service access still depend on your location and connection.
