For most full-game recordings, use 1080p at 30 fps with Efficient (HEVC/H.265) encoding. Switch to 1080p/60 when smooth motion or half-speed review matters, and choose 2.7K/30 or 4K/30 only when added detail justifies the narrower tracking margin, larger files and greater storage demand.

Choose the right Falcon recording mode

Falcon offers four documented capture modes: 1080p/30fps, 1080p/60fps, 2.7K/30fps and 4K/30fps. The best choice depends on whether your priority is uninterrupted coverage, motion analysis, framing margin or maximum detail.

Mode Motion smoothness Tracking and field-of-view margin Image detail Best use
1080p/30 Efficient Standard motion Widest practical margin among the listed choices Good for coaching, archives and normal viewing Safest default for a complete game
1080p/60 Efficient Smoother motion; suitable for half-speed review Narrower field of view; XbotGo warns this can reduce tracking performance Same nominal resolution as 1080p/30 Fast action when the camera can stay close enough to the play
2.7K/30 Efficient Standard motion Less storage and framing margin than 1080p modes More crop and zoom detail Detail-focused recordings with substantial storage
4K/30 Efficient Standard motion Highest storage burden and least tolerance for a poorly placed camera Maximum detail among the four modes Large displays, later cropping or detailed tactical review

Why 1080p/30 is the default

Thirty frames per second is adequate for ordinary game playback, while 1080p gives the tracking system more framing margin than the narrower 60-fps view. Efficient mode uses HEVC/H.265, reducing file size so the camera is less likely to run out of card capacity during a long game. This combination is the most balanced option when missing a late-game sequence would be worse than giving up extra resolution.

When 1080p/60 is worth the trade-off

The June 29, 2026 firmware announcement describes the higher frame rate as useful for slowing footage to half speed while keeping fast plays smooth. Use it for rapid movement, skill analysis or replay work when the camera has enough distance and a clear angle. The narrower field of view is not a cosmetic change: it leaves less room for players moving toward the edge of the frame and may reduce automatic tracking performance. Test the framing at the actual venue before committing to a whole game.

When to choose 2.7K or 4K

Higher resolution helps when you expect to crop, zoom into a tactic, identify a distant player or show footage on a large screen. It does not compensate for poor placement or a camera that loses the play. Both 2.7K/30 and 4K/30 keep the standard 30-fps motion cadence, so their main benefit is spatial detail rather than smoother movement. Pick 2.7K when you need a middle ground; reserve 4K for sessions where storage, card speed and post-production hardware are all ready for the larger files.

Efficient (HEVC) versus Compatible (H.264)

Falcon documents two encoding choices. Efficient mode records HEVC/H.265 files at lower data rates. Compatible mode records H.264 files that are easier for older phones, tablets, computers and editing applications to decode, but the files are larger.

Priority Recommended encoder Reason
Longest recording time on a card Efficient (HEVC/H.265) Lower listed megabytes per minute
Editing on a device with uncertain HEVC support Compatible (H.264) Broader playback and editing support
Sharing directly with older hardware Compatible (H.264) Fewer decoding-related errors
Modern phone or computer with confirmed HEVC support Efficient (HEVC/H.265) Smaller files without changing resolution or frame rate

Encoding does not fix tracking, lighting or a badly aimed tripod. It changes storage consumption and whether your playback chain can open the resulting files. If a clip shows a black screen, stutters or refuses to import, test the same workflow with Compatible/H.264 before changing the camera’s resolution.

Storage planning for a complete game

XbotGo’s 2026 estimates list average file sizes per minute. Actual use varies with settings and conditions, and the usable capacity of a card is lower than its advertised capacity. The hourly figures below multiply the listed minute rates by 60; they are planning values, not a guarantee of exact recording time.

Mode and encoder Estimated MB/min Approx. GB/hour
1080p/30 Efficient 110 6.6
1080p/60 Efficient 166 9.96
2.7K/30 Efficient 194 11.64
4K/30 Efficient 295 17.7
1080p/30 Compatible 104 6.24
1080p/60 Compatible 204 12.24
2.7K/30 Compatible 203 12.18
4K/30 Compatible 425 25.5

Approximate card capacity by mode

The next table uses decimal card capacities (1 GB = 1,000 MB) and the listed average rates. Subtract a safety margin for formatting overhead, existing files and variations in scene complexity; do not plan a game to end at the mathematical limit.

Mode 128GB 256GB 512GB 1TB
1080p/30 Efficient About 19.4 h About 38.8 h About 77.6 h About 151.5 h
1080p/60 Efficient About 12.9 h About 25.7 h About 51.4 h About 100.4 h
2.7K/30 Efficient About 11.0 h About 22.0 h About 44.0 h About 85.9 h
4K/30 Efficient About 7.2 h About 14.5 h About 28.9 h About 56.5 h
1080p/30 Compatible About 20.5 h About 41.0 h About 82.1 h About 160.3 h
1080p/60 Compatible About 10.5 h About 20.9 h About 41.8 h About 81.7 h
2.7K/30 Compatible About 10.5 h About 21.0 h About 42.0 h About 82.1 h
4K/30 Compatible About 5.0 h About 10.0 h About 20.1 h About 39.2 h

A 90-minute game at 1080p/30 Efficient uses roughly 9.9 GB at the stated average rate; the same duration at 4K/30 Compatible uses roughly 38.25 GB. Those examples show why encoder choice can matter as much as resolution. For tournaments or doubleheaders, calculate every scheduled recording, then leave reserve capacity instead of choosing a card that exactly matches the nominal total.

Camera placement that protects tracking

Settings cannot rescue a camera that is too low, too close or pointed at the wrong part of the court. XbotGo’s volleyball setup guidance recommends placing the tripod 10 feet outside the sideline at an 8-foot height. Frame the court at eye level before raising the tripod so the final elevated view remains centered, and avoid touching the camera body after recording starts.

Use the correct mount

Falcon uses a quick-release plate and cannot screw directly onto a tripod. Confirm that the plate is locked into the camera and that the tripod head is secure before you leave the setup unattended. A loose plate can change the horizon or aim even when the camera itself appears to be recording normally.

Check the whole playing area

  • Stand at the intended tripod position and verify both sidelines, end lines and the likely path of fast breaks are visible.
  • Keep the camera at the recommended height rather than lowering it to make setup easier; a low angle increases obstruction from players and spectators.
  • Do not narrow the frame merely to make players larger unless you have confirmed that tracking remains reliable.
  • Keep the tripod stable and away from traffic, balls and equipment bags.

Pre-game setup and recording procedure

  1. Charge the camera before leaving for the venue. The published material does not establish a universal battery runtime per game, so do not assume one charge covers a doubleheader.
  2. Insert a card with enough capacity for the complete schedule and check that important files have already been copied elsewhere.
  3. Choose the resolution and frame rate: 1080p/30 for the safest coverage, 1080p/60 for motion analysis, or 2.7K/30 and 4K/30 for detail.
  4. Choose Efficient/HEVC unless your playback or editing device has unreliable HEVC support; use Compatible/H.264 when interoperability is more important than card life.
  5. Enable anti-flicker if the venue lights create horizontal bands. Select the setting that matches the local electrical lighting standard when the camera offers that choice.
  6. Lock white balance when the lighting is stable. A locked balance prevents color shifts as the camera sees different jerseys, walls or sections of the court.
  7. Leave microphone recording on when game sound, referee calls or coaching audio is part of the deliverable. Turn it off only when silent footage is intentional.
  8. Mount Falcon on its quick-release plate, place the tripod about 10 feet outside the sideline at 8 feet high, and frame the court at eye level before raising the tripod.
  9. Start recording and leave the camera body untouched. The manual excerpt states that holding M1, M2 or M3 for three seconds starts or stops recording; use the control deliberately and verify the recording indicator before walking away.
  10. After the final whistle, hold the selected M button for three seconds to stop recording and wait for the file to finish writing before removing power or the card.

Using dual-stream output

The manual excerpt documents dual-stream output as 4K/30 for storage plus 1080p/30 for preview. This lets a compatible workflow retain a high-resolution recording while monitoring a lower-resolution preview. It does not mean the camera is recording two independently framed scenes, and it does not remove the storage requirement of the 4K stream. Confirm that the application or device you use can identify both streams before relying on the preview for live monitoring.

Fix common Falcon recording problems

Falcon misses plays or loses the action

  • Return to 1080p/30 if you are using 1080p/60 and the narrower field of view is leaving too little tracking margin.
  • Move the tripod to the recommended geometry—about 10 feet outside the sideline and 8 feet high—and re-center the full court.
  • Remove obstructions and avoid touching or rotating the camera once recording begins.
  • Use 60 fps only after checking that the entire playing area remains visible during the fastest transitions.

No official source supplies a universal missed-play percentage or a guaranteed recording-success rate. These steps improve the documented setup conditions, but no setting can promise perfect coverage in every venue.

Horizontal bands or flicker appear

Enable anti-flicker when artificial lighting produces bands that move through the image. If the venue has mixed lighting, test from the final camera position because a setting that works in one gym may not suit another. Flicker is a lighting-and-shutter interaction; increasing resolution or switching encoders does not inherently correct it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The footage will not play or edit smoothly

HEVC files require compatible hardware and software. If a phone, older computer or editor cannot decode them reliably, switch to Compatible/H.264 for the next recording. For footage already captured, use a trusted HEVC-capable player or transcode a working copy rather than deleting the original. Transcoding takes additional time and storage, so H.264 is the practical choice when the destination workflow is unknown.

The card fills before the game ends

Check the mode against the per-minute table. 4K/30 Compatible is listed at about 425 MB/min, nearly four times the 1080p/30 Efficient estimate of 110 MB/min. Move to 1080p/30 Efficient, use a larger card with adequate sustained write performance, or divide a long schedule into planned files. Do not remove the card while recording; stop the camera and wait for writing to finish.

Color changes during a recording

Lock white balance when venue lighting is stable. An unlocked balance can react to large changes in the scene and produce visible shifts between plays. If the lighting genuinely changes during the event, leave it unlocked and accept that consistency may be less predictable.

  • Capacity: size the card for every planned game, then add reserve space for rate variation and setup clips.
  • Sustained write performance: use a card rated for the selected high-resolution stream, especially 4K or Compatible/H.264 modes with the highest listed rates.
  • Mount compatibility: verify the tripod includes a quick-release plate that fits Falcon; the camera cannot screw directly onto a tripod.
  • Height and stability: use a tripod that can reach about 8 feet while remaining stable outside the sideline.
  • Weather and power: protect the setup from venue conditions and plan charging for sessions longer than a single game because a universal battery-per-game figure is not published.

Recommended presets by recording goal

Goal Preset Reason
One complete game with minimal risk 1080p/30, Efficient, anti-flicker as needed, white balance locked when stable Balanced tracking margin, motion and storage
Fast-play or half-speed coaching review 1080p/60, Efficient Smoother motion, with the narrower field-of-view trade-off
Moderate cropping and extra detail 2.7K/30, Efficient More spatial detail without the 4K storage burden
Maximum detail for later crops 4K/30, Efficient Highest detail with smaller files than 4K/30 Compatible
Editing on older hardware 1080p/30 or 1080p/60, Compatible H.264 is more broadly supported
High-resolution archive with live preview Dual stream: 4K/30 storage plus 1080p/30 preview Uses the documented dual-stream workflow; verify application support first

What these settings cannot guarantee

Resolution, frame rate, encoding and tripod geometry all influence usable footage, but they are not a guarantee of complete coverage. The available official documentation does not publish a controlled statistic for missed action, battery life per game or recording-failure frequency. Treat the presets as risk-reduction choices: verify framing before each event, monitor the recording indicator, carry a properly sized card and power plan, and review a short test clip on the device that will actually edit or share the game.
