There is no single best workout headphone for every sport. Swimming requires a model built for submersion with local audio storage; running often favors an open-ear design that keeps the ear canal clear; and gym users may prefer secure in-ear buds with isolation, active noise cancellation (ANC), or workout sensors. The practical winners are therefore activity-specific: Shokz OpenSwim Pro for swimming, Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 for open-ear running, Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 for hooked in-ear gym and running sessions, and JBL Endurance Peak 3 as a budget-oriented hooked alternative.

Use the comparison below as a starting point, then match water protection, fit, awareness, playback method, battery mode, and extras to the way you actually train. A sweat- or rain-resistant rating is not automatically a swimming rating.

Best workout headphones at a glance

Best for Model What makes it suitable Important limitation
Swimming and underwater audio Shokz OpenSwim Pro IP68 protection, a stated 2 m (6.5 ft) depth rating, Bluetooth on land, onboard MP3 playback underwater, and 32 GB storage. Underwater listening uses MP3 mode rather than Bluetooth streaming; follow the depth and care instructions.
Open-ear running Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 Open-ear construction, a secure fit, and a manufacturer-rated battery of up to 12 hours. Its IP55 rating is for rain and sweat. The manufacturer excludes seawater, sauna, and shower use.
Gym or running with hooked in-ear buds Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 Over-ear hooks, silicone coating, IPX4 splash protection, ANC, and heart-rate sensors listed by RTINGS. IPX4 is not a swimming rating, and ANC can reduce awareness outdoors.
Budget-oriented hooked option JBL Endurance Peak 3 SoundGuys describes it as a budget-conscious workout choice with a hooked design, IP68, and nearly nine hours per charge. Review figures and availability can change; verify the current specification before buying.

These are different tools rather than four versions of the same product. Open-ear headphones trade some isolation for environmental awareness, while sealed in-ear buds can provide stronger isolation and a more conventional bass response. A swimming model has to solve a separate problem: Bluetooth radio links are unreliable underwater, so it needs local playback.

What are the best headphones for swimming?

Shokz OpenSwim Pro: the swimming-specific pick

The OpenSwim Pro is the clearest match for pool or open-water sessions because Shokz specifies an IP68 rating and a maximum operating depth of 2 meters (6.5 feet). Its design supports Bluetooth on land and switches to built-in MP3 playback underwater, where a phone connection should not be expected. The product page lists 32 GB of onboard storage, enough for loading audio before entering the water. These are manufacturer specifications, not an independent swim test; stay within the stated depth and use limits. See the OpenSwim Pro product information and product page.

Shokz quotes up to nine hours in Bluetooth mode and up to six hours in MP3 mode. Those figures are mode-specific maximums. The company notes that actual endurance varies with volume, audio source, interference, enabled features, and individual use habits, so a long open-water event should be planned around the shorter MP3 figure rather than the headline maximum.

How to use it around water

  1. Pair and test Bluetooth audio on land before your session.
  2. Load the audio you want for underwater playback and confirm that the headphones can play it without a phone connection.
  3. Switch to MP3 mode before submerging; do not assume a Bluetooth stream will continue underwater.
  4. Remain within the stated 2 m depth limit and avoid treating IP68 as permission for deeper diving.
  5. After saltwater use, rinse or soak the unit in fresh water as Shokz recommends, then dry it according to the manufacturer’s care guidance.

For pool swimmers, this is the only candidate in this guide designed around underwater playback. For a run to the pool or a gym workout before swimming, remember that its most useful feature in the water is local MP3 playback, not wireless streaming.

What are the best running headphones?

Shokz OpenRun Pro 2: open ears and outdoor awareness

OpenRun Pro 2 is aimed at runners who want their ear canals unobstructed. Shokz describes it as open-ear with a secure fit and rates battery life at up to 12 hours. Tom’s Guide reports that multi-marathoner Nick Harris-Fry called it his preferred running headphone at the time of the review, citing its fit, open design, and sound. That is a reviewer’s opinion, not a laboratory measurement or a guarantee that the fit will suit every head.

The open-ear approach lets ambient traffic, other runners, and spoken instructions remain easier to hear than with strongly isolating earbuds. It also means you should not expect the same seal or low-frequency isolation as a sealed in-ear model. The right choice depends on whether awareness or isolation is your priority.

Water protection is where many buyers make a costly mistake. Shokz specifies IP55 for rain and sweat and explicitly says the OpenRun Pro 2 is not suitable for seawater, a sauna, or a shower. It is therefore a running and gym model, not a swim model. Check the OpenRun Pro 2 product page and FAQ for the manufacturer’s current restrictions.

When an open-ear design is the better running choice

  • You run beside roads or on shared paths and want more environmental sound than ANC earbuds provide.
  • You dislike the plugged-in sensation of silicone ear tips.
  • You need a secure design for long runs but do not want to adjust a bud in the ear canal.
  • You can accept less isolation in exchange for awareness.

For crowded gyms, open-ear headphones also make it easier to hear staff, timers, or a training partner. In a loud weight room, however, an in-ear design may mask equipment noise more effectively.

Best in-ear headphones for gym and running sessions

Beats Powerbeats Pro 2: retention, isolation, and sensors

RTINGS lists the Powerbeats Pro 2 with over-ear hooks, a silicone coating, IPX4 protection, ANC, and heart-rate sensors. The hooks are intended to keep each earbud in place during movement, while the in-ear seal provides more isolation than an open-ear headset. Those characteristics make it a candidate for lifting, interval training, and runs where a stable seal matters more than hearing every surrounding sound.

IPX4 means splash protection; it does not make the earbuds suitable for submersion. ANC can also reduce awareness of traffic, cyclists, gym announcements, or nearby people. Use an awareness or transparency mode when available and keep volume low enough to monitor your surroundings. The product’s sensor and ANC features are extras, not substitutes for a secure fit or safe listening habits.

JBL Endurance Peak 3: a budget-oriented hooked alternative

SoundGuys identifies the JBL Endurance Peak 3 as a budget-conscious workout option and lists a hooked design, IP68 protection, and nearly nine hours of use per charge. The hook can appeal to athletes who routinely dislodge ordinary true-wireless earbuds. Because this information comes from a review guide rather than a current manufacturer specification sheet in the supplied sources, confirm the exact model, regional variant, battery claim, and intended water use before purchase. An IP68 label still needs to be interpreted alongside JBL’s own activity instructions.

“Budget” here describes its position in that review, not a fixed worldwide price. Retail pricing, stock, and bundles change by country and date, so this guide does not assign a dollar figure.

How to read water-resistance ratings

An IP code combines a dust-protection digit with a water-protection digit. The water digit describes a defined test condition, not every real-world activity. Tom’s Guide explains that IPX4 covers splashes and specifically warns that an IPX7 rating alone is not a reason to take headphones swimming. Read its explanation of IP ratings and workout headphones alongside the chosen product’s instructions.

  • IPX4: protection against splashing, useful for sweat and light rain but not immersion.
  • IP55: dust protection at the first digit’s stated level plus water-jet protection at the second digit’s level; for OpenRun Pro 2, Shokz limits the claim to rain and sweat.
  • IP68: a higher dust and water-protection classification, but the tested depth and duration still matter. OpenSwim Pro’s stated limit is 2 m, and the manufacturer defines how it should be used.

Do not infer shower, sauna, seawater, or pool suitability from the code alone. Salt, heat, detergents, and pressure can create conditions different from the rating test. Manufacturer activity restrictions take precedence over a retailer’s shorthand description.

Choose by your training priority

If you swim regularly

Choose the OpenSwim Pro category first. Require a stated submersion limit and an onboard playback mode, because a phone’s Bluetooth connection is not the underwater solution. Plan battery life around the MP3-mode figure, rinse after saltwater exposure, and keep the device within its rated depth.

If you run outdoors

Decide whether awareness or isolation comes first. OpenRun Pro 2 is the better fit for an open-ear experience and a secure, unobstructed ear canal. Hooked in-ear buds such as Powerbeats Pro 2 are better when you need an in-ear seal, ANC, or sensor features. Neither should be treated as a swim headset.

If you train in a gym

Consider how often you move between machines, whether you need to hear coaching, and how much background noise you want to block. Hooks help retention during jumps and intervals. ANC can make music clearer in a loud room but should be reduced or disabled when you need environmental awareness. For a gym that includes a pool, use separate swim-capable equipment rather than exposing a rain-and-sweat model to immersion.

If you want the lowest-cost route among these picks

Start with Endurance Peak 3 as the budget-oriented candidate identified by SoundGuys, but verify current availability and specifications. A lower purchase price is not a reason to compromise on the water-use instructions or fit security you need for training.

Battery life: compare the mode you will actually use

Published endurance is meaningful only when the playback mode and test assumptions are clear. OpenSwim Pro’s maximum is up to nine hours over Bluetooth and up to six hours in MP3 mode; underwater use belongs to the latter mode. OpenRun Pro 2’s manufacturer figure is up to 12 hours, while the review description of Endurance Peak 3 says nearly nine hours per charge. Powerbeats Pro 2’s specific endurance number is not established in the cited material, so do not substitute a generic true-wireless estimate.

Volume, radio interference, ANC, heart-rate sensing, codec or source behavior, and battery age can all reduce runtime. Charge before a long session, and if an event exceeds the shorter quoted mode, carry a backup plan rather than assuming the headline maximum will hold.

Fit, comfort, and awareness checklist

  • Retention: Hooks and secure open-ear bands resist movement, but they can create pressure during long sessions. Test the fit during the most vigorous exercise you do.
  • Ear-canal comfort: Open-ear designs avoid an in-ear seal; silicone-tipped buds need the correct tip size to stay put without excessive pressure.
  • Awareness: Open-ear is naturally more transparent to outside sound. ANC and a sealed in-ear fit can be useful indoors but may be inappropriate near traffic.
  • Sweat and salt: Wipe and dry headphones after training, and follow the specific rinse instructions for saltwater use.
  • Controls: Make sure buttons or touch controls can be operated with wet or sweaty fingers before relying on them during a set.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Taking a splash-rated model swimming

IPX4 and IP55 models are not swim headphones. Even an IPX7 code does not automatically establish suitability for swimming. Use a model with explicit submersion guidance and local playback.

Expecting Bluetooth to work underwater

Water disrupts the short-range radio link between a phone and a submerged headset. OpenSwim Pro addresses this with MP3 mode; start that mode before entering the water.

Using the wrong battery figure

Do not plan an underwater workout around OpenSwim Pro’s Bluetooth maximum. Its MP3 figure is the relevant one. Treat all “up to” numbers as conditions-dependent maximums.

Ignoring manufacturer exclusions

OpenRun Pro 2’s IP55 rating does not override Shokz’s explicit exclusions for seawater, sauna, and shower use. Product-specific instructions are more useful than a rating copied into a sales listing.

Blocking too much sound outdoors

ANC can reduce awareness of traffic and people. Choose open-ear playback or an awareness mode for road running, and keep volume at a level that lets you perceive important sounds.

Bottom line by activity

For swimming, choose Shokz OpenSwim Pro because it combines a stated 2 m submersion limit with onboard MP3 playback and storage. For open-ear running, choose Shokz OpenRun Pro 2, provided your use is limited to the rain-and-sweat conditions Shokz specifies. For gym or running sessions that benefit from hooks, isolation, ANC, or heart-rate sensing, consider Beats Powerbeats Pro 2. For a budget-oriented hooked design, investigate JBL Endurance Peak 3 and verify its current details. The safest purchase is the one whose water rating, fit, playback method, and awareness characteristics match your actual workout rather than the one with the most impressive headline specification.
