Best overall sealed alternative: JBL Endurance Peak 3 is the closest clearly documented rival to Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 in this comparison. It combines a bendable ear-hook enhancer, an IP68 rating and a manufacturer-rated 50 hours of total playback. Choose Powerbeats Pro 2 instead if you specifically want active noise cancellation, Transparency mode, workout heart-rate sensors and five eartip sizes. For a lower displayed manufacturer price, soundcore Sport X20 is worth investigating, but the available listing does not establish enough specifications for a full head-to-head verdict.

JBL Endurance Zone belongs in a different category: it is open-ear, so it leaves the ear canal unobstructed and prioritizes awareness of traffic, people and other surroundings over sealed isolation. The right choice depends on fit, listening environment, protection rating, battery claims and the features you will actually use—not on the longest specification list.

At a glance: which ear-hook workout earbud fits your use?

Model Ear design Protection stated by maker Battery claim Modes or notable features Price observed in source
Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 Sealed in-ear buds with flexible, nickel-titanium alloy-reinforced hooks IPX4 sweat and water resistance Up to 45 hours with the wireless charging case ANC, Transparency mode, workout heart-rate sensors, five eartip sizes Not stated on the product page
JBL Endurance Peak 3 Sealed in-ear buds with a bendable TwistLock hook enhancer IP68 dust and water protection Up to 10 hours in the earbuds plus 40 hours in the case Ambient Aware, TalkThru, 10 mm dynamic driver; replacement tips and enhancers listed $109.95 displayed on the US manufacturer page during the October 13, 2026 research check
soundcore Sport X20 In-ear sport earbuds with a hook Not stated on the collection listing Not stated on the collection listing Collection page identifies it as an exercise model; further specifications require its dedicated product page $79.99 displayed on the US manufacturer collection during the October 13, 2026 research check
JBL Endurance Zone Open-ear sport headphone with silicone hook and adaptable memory wire IP68 Up to 8 hours per charge plus 24 hours from the case Open-ear awareness; adjustable 10-band EQ in the app Not stated on the product page

All battery figures in the table are manufacturers’ stated maximums, not independently measured results. Ratings apply to the device as specified; none of these sources says that a charging case has the same protection rating as the earbuds.

Why ear hooks can work better for workouts

An ear hook adds a second point of retention around the outer ear. Instead of asking the ear tip or an internal wing alone to resist the movement of running, jumping or strength training, the hook carries part of that load. This is why running guides commonly describe hooks as the most secure approach, while also warning that they can be less comfortable than small winged in-ear buds for some ears. Tom’s Guide notes that compact buds can be more practical for some people, including glasses wearers. Its running-headphone guide discusses both “what type of headphone is best for running?” and whether headphones fall off during a run: Tom’s Guide running-headphone guide.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Security is not identical to comfort. A hook can prevent a bud from dropping while creating pressure where the hook meets the ear, especially during long sessions or when it overlaps a glasses arm. Ear canals and outer ears differ substantially, so a manufacturer’s fit-testing claim cannot guarantee your individual fit. A return policy and a choice of tip sizes are practical safeguards.

Beats Powerbeats Pro 2: the feature-rich sealed reference

Powerbeats Pro 2 is the benchmark in this group when you want a sealed, hook-retained earbud with a broad feature set. Beats describes flexible ear hooks reinforced with nickel-titanium alloy, an in-ear seal, active noise cancellation, Transparency mode and workout heart-rate sensors. Five eartip sizes are included, giving you more starting points for balancing stability, bass seal and pressure.

What makes it compelling

  • Workout sensing: Beats lists heart-rate sensors intended for workouts. Sensor accuracy depends on placement and contact; the manufacturer’s statement is not an independent validation.
  • Noise control: ANC is designed to reduce external sound, while Transparency mode intentionally lets outside sound through. They are different operating goals, not interchangeable labels.
  • Fit adjustment: Five eartip sizes make it easier to tune the acoustic seal without changing the hook itself.
  • Claimed endurance: Beats reports up to 45 hours when the wireless charging case is included. The figure is a maximum manufacturer claim rather than a controlled measurement in this comparison.

How to interpret Beats’ fit claims

Beats says it conducted more than 1,500 hours of fit testing with nearly 1,000 athletes and says the second-generation model is 20% lighter than the original. Those are manufacturer-reported comparison and testing claims, not independent laboratory results. Beats also states, “Finding the right fit is crucial to achieve optimal comfort, sound quality, and heart rate accuracy.” In practice, start with the smallest tip that seals without pressure, then check whether the hook remains comfortable when you move your jaw and turn your head.

Where it falls short in this comparison

The stated protection is IPX4, which covers the rating Beats publishes for sweat and water resistance. It should not be expanded into a claim that the charging case is waterproof, or that it offers the same dust protection as an IP68 product. The product page does not provide a price in the material used here, so value cannot be judged against the dated prices shown for the JBL and soundcore listings.

JBL Endurance Peak 3: the clearest sealed Beats alternative

Endurance Peak 3 is the most fully documented sealed alternative in this comparison. JBL lists a bendable TwistLock ear-hook enhancer, a 10 mm dynamic driver, Ambient Aware and TalkThru modes, and IP68 dust and water protection. The manufacturer states up to 10 hours from the earbuds and another 40 hours from the case, or up to 50 hours in total.

Why runners and outdoor users may prefer it

  • Higher stated protection: IP68 is the rating JBL publishes for the earbuds. It is not interchangeable with Powerbeats Pro 2’s IPX4 rating, and the source does not assign IP68 to the case.
  • Hook adjustment: The bendable enhancer gives you a way to change contact around the ear rather than relying only on the ear tip.
  • Awareness modes: Ambient Aware and TalkThru are JBL’s names for its environmental and conversation features. They should not be described as equivalent to ANC.
  • Parts support: JBL lists model-specific replacement ear tips and enhancers, useful if a tip wears out or a hook component is lost.

Price context

The US JBL product page displayed $109.95 when checked for this article on October 13, 2026. That is a manufacturer-page observation, not a guaranteed current retail price or an Amazon quote. Recheck the page and your preferred retailer immediately before buying because inventory and pricing can change.

soundcore Sport X20: a lower displayed price, but incomplete evidence

The current US sport collection identifies Sport X20 as “True Wireless Earbuds for Exercise” and describes it as an in-ear sport earbud with a hook. The collection page displayed $79.99 USD during the October 13, 2026 check. That makes it a relevant lower-price candidate for shoppers who know they want hooks but do not yet need a feature-by-feature verdict.

What the listing establishes

  • It is positioned as an exercise-oriented, in-ear hook design.
  • The displayed US manufacturer price was $79.99 at the time of the check.

What you must verify before purchase

The collection listing does not establish battery life, a water or dust rating, ANC, transparency features, driver size, tip count or control details. Open the dedicated current Sport X20 product page and confirm those points, along with included accessories and return terms, before comparing it directly with Powerbeats Pro 2 or Endurance Peak 3. It would be misleading to fill those cells with assumptions based on another model in the same collection.

JBL Endurance Zone: choose open-ear awareness instead of a seal

Endurance Zone is not a sealed in-ear competitor. JBL describes an open-ear sport headphone with a high-grade silicone ear hook and adaptable memory wire. Because it leaves the ear canal unobstructed, it is aimed at people who need to hear traffic, training instructions, colleagues or other surroundings while exercising.

Its documented strengths

  • Environmental awareness: The open-ear layout avoids plugging the ear canal, so outside sound remains part of what you hear.
  • Durability rating: JBL lists IP68 for the product.
  • Battery: The manufacturer states up to 8 hours per charge and another 24 hours from the case.
  • Sound adjustment: The companion app provides an adjustable 10-band equalizer.

The trade-off versus sealed earbuds

An open-ear design generally cannot create the same ear-canal seal or isolation as a sealed bud. If you need ANC, a strong passive seal or the most isolated sound possible in a gym, Endurance Zone is the wrong category. If awareness is the priority, its design answers a different problem than Powerbeats Pro 2, Peak 3 or Sport X20.

Sealed versus open: make this decision first

Priority Usually points toward Reason
Hearing traffic and people while running outdoors JBL Endurance Zone Open-ear construction keeps the ear canal unobstructed.
Reduced external noise on a treadmill, train or busy gym Powerbeats Pro 2 or another sealed model A sealed in-ear fit can isolate more; Powerbeats Pro 2 also lists ANC.
Maximum stated dust and water protection among the sealed choices here JBL Endurance Peak 3 JBL publishes IP68, while Powerbeats Pro 2 is listed as IPX4 and Sport X20’s rating is not established by the collection page.
Heart-rate sensing in the earbud Powerbeats Pro 2 Beats specifically lists workout heart-rate sensors.
Lowest displayed manufacturer price in this set soundcore Sport X20 $79.99 was shown on the US collection page, but detailed specifications still require verification.

Fit and comfort: a setup process that reduces dropouts

  1. Check the return window first. Ear shape is personal, and a hook that feels secure for one person can press uncomfortably for another. Keep packaging and confirm the seller’s return conditions before opening the product.
  2. Start with the tip, not the hook. On sealed models, choose the smallest eartip that stays sealed without creating pressure. Powerbeats Pro 2 explicitly includes five sizes; Peak 3’s page lists replacement tips and enhancers, while Sport X20’s available collection listing does not state its tip selection.
  3. Seat the earbud before rotating the hook. Place the tip gently, then position the hook around the outer ear. Bending or adjusting the hook should remove movement, not clamp the ear tightly.
  4. Test movement in stages. Walk, turn your head, climb stairs and perform the arm motion you use in training. If the bud loosens, try a different tip or hook position before increasing volume.
  5. Check glasses and headwear. Put on glasses, a hat or a helmet after fitting the earbuds. If the hook and glasses arm compete for the same space, a smaller bud or open-ear design may be more comfortable.
  6. Evaluate long-session pressure. Wear the earbuds for the length of a normal workout while stationary. Immediate stability does not prove that the hook will remain comfortable after an hour.

Do not treat a maker’s athlete testing or “secure fit” language as a promise about your ears. The useful test is whether your own seal, hook position and comfort remain stable through the movements you actually perform.

Water, sweat and dust ratings without over-reading them

IP ratings are specific claims, not a universal durability score. Powerbeats Pro 2 is listed at IPX4, which communicates the stated sweat and water resistance but does not provide a dust-class number. Peak 3 and Endurance Zone are both listed at IP68. Sport X20’s collection listing does not state a rating, so you need the dedicated product page for a meaningful comparison.

None of the cited product pages says the charging case shares the earbuds’ rating. Keep every case away from water unless its own documentation explicitly provides protection. Also distinguish a manufacturer’s rating from your use environment: heavy rain, salt water, soaps and repeated exposure can impose conditions not captured by a simple comparison table.

Battery claims: separate earbuds from the case

Peak 3’s “10 plus 40 hours” means up to 10 hours from the earbuds and up to 40 additional hours supplied by the case. Endurance Zone’s claim is up to 8 hours per charge plus 24 hours from its case. Beats reports up to 45 hours with the Powerbeats Pro 2 wireless charging case. These numbers are not directly comparable to a single-earbud runtime unless the manufacturer states the test conditions, and no independent battery test was conducted for this comparison.

When planning a purchase, ask how you use the earbuds: a runner who charges after every session may value quick convenience, while a traveler may prioritize the largest case-supported total. Confirm whether features such as ANC, high volume or calls reduce the manufacturer’s maximum, because the cited pages present maximum claims rather than a common test protocol.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Modes and controls: similar names do not mean identical behavior

Powerbeats Pro 2 lists ANC and Transparency mode. ANC attempts to reduce external sound; Transparency intentionally mixes outside sound back in. Peak 3 lists Ambient Aware and TalkThru, which are JBL’s environmental-awareness and conversation features. The available material does not establish that these JBL modes deliver the same noise reduction, microphone behavior or tuning as Beats ANC and Transparency.

For outdoor running, an awareness mode or open-ear design can be a deliberate safety choice. For indoor training, ANC may be useful when you want to reduce steady equipment noise. Decide based on where you listen rather than assuming that every mode label represents the same technology.

Price and value: use a dated check, not a permanent ranking

The only prices documented here are page observations from October 13, 2026: $109.95 for Peak 3 on JBL’s US product page and $79.99 for Sport X20 on soundcore’s US sport collection. No price was stated on the Beats or Endurance Zone product pages in the available material. These figures can change with promotions, stock and region.

Which one should you buy?

Choose Powerbeats Pro 2 when features matter most

Select Powerbeats Pro 2 if you want a sealed hook design with ANC, Transparency mode, workout heart-rate sensors and five eartip sizes. It is the strongest fit for someone who values those documented features and accepts the stated IPX4 rating. Verify comfort with your glasses and check the current price before ordering.

Choose JBL Endurance Peak 3 for the documented rugged sealed option

Peak 3 is the straightforward choice when IP68 protection, a bendable enhancer, ambient and conversation modes, and a stated 50-hour total battery claim matter more than ANC or heart-rate sensing. Its $109.95 displayed US price was time-specific, so treat it as a reference point rather than a guarantee.

Investigate soundcore Sport X20 for a budget-oriented hook design

Sport X20 deserves a shortlist if the displayed $79.99 US manufacturer price fits your budget and you prefer an in-ear hook. Do not buy on the collection snippet alone: confirm the dedicated page’s battery, protection, noise-control and accessory details first.

Choose JBL Endurance Zone when awareness outranks isolation

Endurance Zone is the suitable direction for cyclists, runners or workers who want an open ear and environmental awareness. Its 8-hour-per-charge and 24-hour case claims, IP68 rating and 10-band EQ are documented, but its open-ear sound is not a substitute for sealed isolation or ANC.

Buying checklist

  • Decide whether you need a sealed ear canal or open-ear awareness.
  • Match the protection rating to the product’s stated rating; do not assign the case a rating that the maker does not publish.
  • Separate earbud runtime from case-supported total runtime.
  • Check tip sizes, hook adjustability and compatibility with glasses or helmets.
  • Confirm whether you need ANC, an awareness mode, heart-rate sensing or only stable playback.
  • Verify the current regional price, stock, warranty and return policy at the retailer.
  • For Sport X20, read the dedicated current model page before comparing specifications.

Frequently asked questions

Are ear-hook earbuds less likely to fall out while running?

The hook adds retention around the outer ear and is generally considered a secure approach, but fit still depends on ear shape, tip size, movement and comfort. It cannot guarantee that a particular model will stay in every runner’s ears.

Is IP68 automatically better than IPX4 for every workout?

IP68 is a different, more extensive stated protection rating than IPX4, but ratings are not a complete buying decision. Comfort, awareness, case handling and the conditions you encounter still matter, and the cited pages do not say the cases share the earbud rating.

Can JBL Endurance Zone replace Powerbeats Pro 2?

Only if your priority is open-ear awareness. Endurance Zone does not occupy the same sealed in-ear category, so it is not a direct replacement for ANC, a passive seal or the heart-rate feature Beats lists.

Does the 50-hour Peak 3 claim mean 50 hours on one charge?

No. JBL separates the claim into up to 10 hours in the earbuds and up to 40 additional hours from the case.

What should I verify about soundcore Sport X20?

Verify the dedicated product page for battery life, water or dust rating, ANC or awareness modes, driver information, included tips and the current price. The collection listing establishes only its exercise-oriented in-ear hook category and the displayed $79.99 US price at the cited check.
