The best fitness app depends on what you want your phone to do: stream coached workouts, build a lifting plan, record outdoor activities, or connect your training data to a wearable. Those are different jobs, and no single app is best at all of them.
For most iPhone users, Apple Fitness+ is the most complete guided-workout service. Nike Training Club is the best free option, while Fitbod is better if you want an algorithm to create strength sessions around your equipment and recovery. Runners and cyclists should look at Strava, and Garmin owners will get the most value from Garmin Connect.
Prices and features below are U.S. prices verified in August 2026. App Store, Google Play, regional, tax, and promotional pricing may differ.

How to find workouts
- Open the Fitness app on your iPhone.
- Tap Fitness+.
- Open Explore.
- Choose an activity type, then use Filter to narrow the duration, trainer, music, or other available options.
An Apple Watch is not required; an iPhone is enough to use Fitness+. An Apple Watch, AirPods Pro 3, Powerbeats Pro 2, or a compatible Bluetooth heart-rate monitor can add real-time metrics on screen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe main drawback is platform compatibility. Fitness+ is not an Android app, and availability varies by country or region. Some features and workout metrics also depend on compatible Apple hardware.
2. Nike Training Club — best free guided-workout app
Nike Training Club is the easiest recommendation for someone who wants guided workouts without taking out a subscription. Nike currently advertises more than 200 workouts and training programs, with sessions generally lasting from 5 to 50 minutes.
Its catalog covers strength, bodyweight training, cardio, HIIT, yoga, mobility, recovery, sleep, nutrition, mindfulness, and wellness. Some sessions need dumbbells or other equipment, while others are bodyweight-only; the workout overview identifies what you need before starting.
The app is available on iOS and Android. Nike says it removed the old “Premium” label and made the former Premium programs, workouts, and expert tips free for Nike Members. That means older comparisons describing a separate paid NTC Premium tier are no longer current.

Choose Nike Training Club if you want a broad catalog and do not need detailed workout logging or automatic progression. It is less suitable when your priority is tracking every set, rep, and load across months of gym training.
3. Peloton — best for instructor-led variety
Peloton’s standalone app is aimed at people who stay motivated by classes, trainers, music, and a studio atmosphere. It includes strength, yoga, HIIT, Pilates, barre, dance cardio, meditation, stretching, and other formats. You can use it on phones, tablets, TVs, computers, and supported smartwatches without owning Peloton equipment.
There are two important app tiers:
| Plan | Price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| App One | $15.99/month | Unlimited standard classes, but only three cardio-equipment classes per month |
| App+ | $28.99/month | Everything in App One, plus unlimited cardio-equipment classes and Peloton Strength+ |
Do not read “unlimited classes” in the App One description as unlimited access to every Peloton class. The three-per-month limit applies to cardio-equipment classes. App+ is the tier for unrestricted access to those sessions.
If you own a Peloton Bike, Tread, or Row, the equipment uses the separate All-Access Membership, currently $49.99 per month. New app members can generally start with a 30-day trial; a payment method is required, and the selected plan begins automatically unless canceled during the trial.
4. Fitbod — best for automated strength programming
Fitbod is for people who want a workout generator rather than a large library of classes. It builds strength sessions using your goals, available equipment, previous workouts, and muscle recovery. Its exercise library contains more than 1,000 exercises with video demonstrations and form guidance.
The current website price is $15.99 per month or $95.99 per year. The annual plan works out to about $8 per month when billed annually. New users receive a seven-day trial that automatically changes to a paid subscription unless canceled in time.
How to subscribe in Fitbod
Open the app and go to Log tab → Settings icon → Upgrade to Fitbod.

- Vibrant 1.6” AMOLED Display – Large, high-res screen with smooth touch for easy navigation
- 5ATM & IP68 Water Resistance – Swim-ready and dust-resistant for active lifestyles
- Up to 14 Days Battery Life – Powerful 208mAh battery for long-lasting performance
- 101+ Workout Modes with Auto Detection – Automatically tracks common workouts for seamless fitness tracking. Advanced Health Tracking – Includes sleep coaching, SpO2, heart rate, and snore detection
- International Model No Warranty in the US. ONLY compatible with Android devices. Samsung Pay - Not Supported. NOT compatible with iPhone or iOS devices.
Fitbod is a good match for a gym user who wants adaptable programming but does not want to hire a coach or design every session manually. It is not a replacement for a broad instructor-led service: conditioning and recovery movements may appear, but the app is primarily a strength-workout generator.
Cancel through the same billing platform used to subscribe. Web, Apple, and Google Play subscriptions are managed separately, so deleting the app does not cancel the trial or membership.
5. Hevy — best strength-training log
Hevy is a workout journal for people who already know what they want to lift. It records sets, reps, weights, routines, rest periods, supersets, personal records, and progress graphs. Social features add a layer of accountability, while the exercise library provides more than 400 exercises with demonstrations, instructions, equipment filters, and muscle-target filters.
Its free plan is useful for trying the workflow, but the limits matter:
- Four routines
- Three months of data history
- Seven custom exercises
Hevy Pro removes those limits and adds expanded tracking and a warm-up calculator. However, every workout and routine still has a 150-set limit, including Pro accounts.
Useful Hevy paths
- Upgrade: Profile tab → Settings icon → Manage subscription
- Browse exercises: Profile tab → Exercises
- Add an exercise during a workout: tap + Add Exercise
Pick Hevy over Fitbod if logging is the main job. Pick Fitbod if you want the app to decide what to train next.
6. Strava — best for running, cycling, and social accountability
Strava is primarily an activity tracker and fitness social network, not a video workout service. It records running, cycling, walking, hiking, and other sports, then adds route discovery, challenges, clubs, segment leaderboards, training analysis, and social sharing.

- 1500 nits HBM brightness,Glanceable in any light:25% brighter than before, the display achieves a remarkable 1500 nits HBM brightness, making every message readable even in direct sunlight.
The U.S. subscription costs $11.99 per month or $79.99 per year. A Family Plan costs $139.99 per year, while a Strava plus Runna plan costs $149.99 per year. Paid features include suggested and offline routes, advanced analysis, goals, segment leaderboards, and Fitness Score history.
Strava works well when public activity, competition, and community keep you consistent. It is a poor fit if you are specifically looking for a large library of coached strength, yoga, or meditation videos.

7. Garmin Connect — best for Garmin-device owners
Garmin Connect is the natural choice when your fitness data already comes from a Garmin watch, bike computer, or another Garmin device. The free platform brings activity records, health metrics, training information, and device data into one place.
Garmin Connect+ adds paid personalized insights and other premium performance features. Garmin’s current public product page does not expose a dependable, readable U.S. price, so check the in-app purchase screen before subscribing rather than relying on an old comparison.
Garmin Connect is less compelling as a standalone phone fitness app. Its value comes from the Garmin hardware ecosystem; without a Garmin device, Strava or one of the guided-workout apps will usually be more useful.

How to choose the right fitness app
- Choose the workout format first. For coached video sessions, use Apple Fitness+, Nike Training Club, or Peloton. For programmed lifting, use Fitbod. For logging your own plan, use Hevy.
- Check your hardware. Apple Fitness+ favors Apple users, Garmin Connect favors Garmin owners, and Peloton’s equipment classes have their own access rules.
- Price the plan you will actually use. A free app is not cheaper if its catalog does not fit your routine. Conversely, do not pay for App+ if you will never take cardio-equipment classes.
- Inspect trial renewal terms. Fitbod’s seven-day trial and Peloton’s 30-day app trial convert automatically unless canceled. Strava trials also require cancellation before the end date.
- Decide whether history matters. Hevy’s free tier limits history to three months. That is important if you use workout records to plan progressive overload.
