For most professionals who want macOS, the MacBook Air is the best place to start: it covers everyday office work, calls, browsing, and travel without requiring a Pro-tier machine. Choose a MacBook Pro when your workload, display needs, or port requirements justify its higher-tier configurations. If your work depends on Windows applications or your organization’s Windows deployment and security requirements, consider the Surface Laptop for Business 8th Edition instead.
These are recommendations based on manufacturer specifications, not hands-on testing or independent performance comparisons. “Mac enthusiast” can mean someone committed to macOS or someone seeking a Windows laptop with a similarly polished design; the Surface is a Windows alternative, not a way to run macOS. Confirm that your essential applications and peripherals support the operating system you choose.
Which laptop should I buy for work?
| Choose | Best fit | Why it stands out |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air | Mac users doing general business work, travel, calls, and web-based tasks | 13-inch and 15-inch options; a lighter starting point than a Pro-class laptop |
| MacBook Pro | Mac users whose work needs a higher-tier chip configuration, a more advanced display, or a broader selection of ports | 14-inch and 16-inch models, with M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max chip families |
| Surface Laptop for Business 8th Edition | People who need Windows applications or must meet Windows-oriented IT requirements | 13.8-inch and 15-inch options, USB-A and USB-C USB4/Thunderbolt 4 ports, and select configurations with a privacy-screen key |
Start with the software and IT requirements, then match the laptop’s screen size, memory, storage, and ports to the work you actually do. The available specifications do not establish a tested performance winner across these machines.

The MacBook Air is the sensible default for professionals who want macOS for everyday productivity and portability. Apple lists M5 Air models in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes. The 13-inch model has a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display with a 2560 × 1664 resolution and 500-nit brightness. One listed configuration starts with 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD, with other memory and storage options available. Check the exact configuration before buying rather than assuming every Air has the same capacity.

- AN AMAZING MAC AT A SURPRISING PRICE — With an incredibly portable and durable aluminum design, up to 16 hours of battery life,* and the A18 Pro chip, MacBook Neo is ready to go wherever school takes you.
- FOUR STUNNING COLORS. ONE DURABLE DESIGN — Choose from four beautiful colors — Silver, Blush, Citrus, or Indigo — each with a color-coordinated keyboard. And MacBook Neo is made with a durable recycled aluminum enclosure that helps it reach 60 percent recycled content by weight — the most ever in any Apple product.*
- FLY THROUGH EVERYDAY ASSIGNMENTS — Whether you’re cramming for finals, using Apple Intelligence* to summarize class notes, creating presentations, or even playing the latest Apple Arcade game,* MacBook Neo delivers the performance and AI capabilities you need to get things done.
- UP TO 16 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Neo delivers all day battery life, so you can power through from early morning classes to late night study sessions without worrying about plugging in.
- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
Apple lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3, a headphone jack, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and a 12MP Center Stage camera. The 13-inch model is listed at 2.7 pounds. Apple estimates up to 18 hours of video streaming or up to 15 hours of wireless web use; these are manufacturer estimates, not a guarantee of the battery life you will see with your apps, settings, and workload.
For frequent travel, compare the 13-inch and 15-inch sizes in person if possible: the larger model may suit spreadsheet and document work better, while the smaller one is easier to carry. If you connect multiple displays or many peripherals at a desk, check whether the Air’s ports meet the setup’s requirements before choosing a compatible dock.

When to step up to a MacBook Pro
Consider the MacBook Pro when a specific requirement makes the Air a poor fit—not simply because the laptop is for business. Apple lists 14-inch and 16-inch models and M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max chip families. The 14-inch model’s 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display supports adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. The family includes HDMI, SDXC, headphone, MagSafe, and Thunderbolt ports; exact port counts vary by model.

Compare the exact chip and memory options against your software’s needs, and check the port layout of the specific model before buying.

Windows laptop for business: Surface Laptop for Business 8th Edition
The Surface Laptop for Business is the Windows alternative in this shortlist. Microsoft’s support page identifies 8th Edition models in 13.8-inch and 15-inch sizes, with USB-A and two USB-C USB4/Thunderbolt 4 ports. Select business configurations include a privacy-screen key that narrows viewing angles. Microsoft says many components can be replaced by authorized service providers or skilled technicians; availability and service options can vary by product, market, and time.
Microsoft announced on May 19, 2026, that the new Surface Laptop for Business was available in select markets with Intel Core Ultra Series 3, with Snapdragon X2 expansion planned later in 2026. That announcement does not establish current availability in every country or for every configuration, so check Microsoft’s local listing and your organization’s approved hardware options. Microsoft’s performance claims in that announcement are vendor comparisons, not a common independent test against MacBooks.

Before choosing Windows, confirm that your required applications, security controls, device provisioning, and peripherals are supported by your organization’s setup. A laptop’s business label alone does not guarantee that it meets a company’s policies.

How to choose a work laptop without overbuying
1. Confirm operating-system compatibility
List the applications you must use, including specialized or company-managed software, and verify that they support macOS or Windows as appropriate. Also check any required peripherals and organizational security or deployment controls. Do not assume an app behaves identically on both systems.

- Share Your Family Subscription | You can share all of your subscription benefits with up to 6 people for use across all their devices.
2. Match the configuration to the workload
For ordinary office applications, calls, browsing, and travel, begin with the Air and select memory and storage that suit your actual workload. Move to a Pro when you can identify a need for its chip options, display, or ports. For a Windows requirement, verify the exact Surface configuration and local availability. The listed specifications alone do not provide a fair benchmark ranking across operating systems and models.
3. Balance screen size and travel
Consider whether you routinely work with several documents side by side or carry the laptop between meetings and trips. The Air comes in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes; the Pro in 14-inch and 16-inch models; and the Surface Laptop for Business 8th Edition in 13.8-inch and 15-inch sizes. Screen size is a practical trade-off, not a performance ranking.
4. Check the desk setup before adding a dock
If you use external displays or desk peripherals, check the laptop generation, display count and resolution, power delivery, and required connections before selecting a USB-C or Thunderbolt dock. A dock is optional; no particular dock was evaluated here. Apple lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the Air. Compatibility and supported display setups should be confirmed for the exact laptop and dock.

What the battery figures do—and do not—tell you
Apple’s current Air specifications give estimates of up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web use. Microsoft’s published battery figures for Surface Laptop for Business 7th Edition—not 8th Edition—are up to 20 hours of local video playback for the 13.8-inch model and 22 hours for the 15-inch model, plus up to 12 hours and 14 hours of web use, respectively. Microsoft tested preproduction 7th Edition devices in January 2025 at 150 nits, using separate video and web protocols, and says battery life varies.
Because these are different manufacturers’ estimates for different generations and test methods, they are not a direct battery-life comparison. Treat them as context, and look for a test using the exact model and a workload like yours if battery runtime is a deciding factor.

What this shortlist cannot establish
Manufacturer specifications can identify sizes, ports, configuration choices, and stated battery estimates, but they do not settle long-term reliability, repair costs, real-world battery performance, or which laptop is fastest for a particular professional workflow. Prices, local availability, and exact retail configurations also vary. Compare current regional SKUs and verify that the configuration meets your software and organizational requirements before purchase.
