For most individual WordPress site owners, Wordfence is the best starting point in 2026: its free plugin combines a firewall, malware scanning and login protection with two-factor authentication. Choose Sucuri when you need a cloud-delivered web application firewall and hands-on cleanup, Solid Security when guided hardening is your priority, or Patchstack when vulnerability intelligence and virtual patching matter more than malware scanning. The right choice depends on your threat model, technical skill, number of sites and response needs—not on a single ranking.

Quick picks for different WordPress sites

Best fit Plugin Why it fits Main limitation
Most individual sites Wordfence Local firewall, malware scanner, login security and a usable free tier Free-tier firewall rules and signatures arrive later than premium updates; one secondary review cites a delay of up to 30 days
Cloud protection and incident cleanup Sucuri Cloud-based WAF and plans centered on monitoring, response and cleanup Reviewers report that core WAF protection requires a paid plan
Beginners who need guided hardening Solid Security Step-by-step security configuration and server-side protection No cloud WAF; its firewall operates on the WordPress server
Developers and agencies tracking plugin vulnerabilities Patchstack Vulnerability intelligence and virtual patching for known issues It is not a general-purpose malware scanner; free-tier site limits need confirmation because published descriptions conflict

What a WordPress security plugin actually protects

“Security plugin” covers several different technologies. A local firewall runs inside WordPress and can block suspicious requests before they reach vulnerable code. A malware scanner compares files, database content and behavior against known indicators. Login controls add two-factor authentication, brute-force limits and password policies. A cloud WAF filters traffic before it reaches your hosting account, which can absorb attacks that might otherwise consume server resources. Vulnerability services watch plugin and theme advisories and may apply a virtual patch while you prepare a real update.

These layers solve different problems. A scanner can find an infection but cannot prevent a volumetric attack from exhausting your server. A WAF can block malicious requests but cannot restore a deleted database. Virtual patching can shield a known plugin flaw, but it does not replace updates, backups or administrator access controls. Before comparing features, decide which gap is most dangerous for your site.

WordPress security plugins compared by protection model

Plugin Primary model Core capabilities described for 2026 Best suited to Free or entry-level caveat
Wordfence Local firewall and scanner Firewall, malware scanning, login security and two-factor authentication Individual owners, small businesses and administrators who want one broad control panel Free tier is available; premium firewall rules and signatures are delivered faster
Sucuri Cloud WAF and security service Cloud traffic filtering, monitoring and cleanup-oriented services High-traffic sites and owners who want external filtering or post-incident help Core WAF protection is described by reviewers as paid
Solid Security Server-side hardening and firewall Guided hardening, account and login controls, and a firewall with virtual patching in the Pro plan Non-technical users who prefer guided setup No cloud WAF; Pro pricing starts at $99 per year for one site
Patchstack Vulnerability intelligence and virtual patching Alerts and protective rules for known WordPress plugin vulnerabilities Developers, agencies and teams managing many client sites Free-plan site allowance is inconsistent across published descriptions; verify the current plan before deployment

Wordfence: the broadest first choice for one site

What the free plugin includes

The free Wordfence plugin combines three controls that many site owners would otherwise configure separately: a firewall, a malware scanner and login security that includes two-factor authentication. That combination is why reviewers commonly describe it as the default recommendation for an individual WordPress site.

The important qualification is update timing. Premium customers receive new firewall rules and malware signatures sooner. One secondary review cites a 30-day delay for the free tier, while the exact schedule should be checked in Wordfence’s current documentation before you rely on a specific number. The free plugin is still useful, but a newly disclosed vulnerability can leave a longer window in which your site depends on other controls such as prompt plugin updates, least-privilege accounts and hosting-level filtering.

Premium and response pricing

Offering Published price What the figure means
Wordfence Premium $149.00 USD per year 2026 product-page snapshot; each site requires its own licence key
Wordfence Care $590.00 USD per year 2026 pricing-page snapshot; a higher-touch service tier
Wordfence Response $1,250 USD per year 2026 pricing-page snapshot; includes 24/7 incident response with a one-hour response time

The vendor states that Premium increased from $119 to $149 per year effective 5 December 2024. Treat all prices as snapshots: renewals, taxes, regional currency and promotions can change the amount you actually pay.

When Wordfence is the wrong fit

A local firewall still consumes resources on your hosting account, and a scanner cannot substitute for a clean backup or professional remediation. If your site regularly absorbs large attacks, or if you need someone else to handle cleanup, compare a cloud WAF and a response service instead of assuming a plugin alone is sufficient.

Sucuri: cloud filtering and cleanup-oriented protection

Sucuri’s distinction is architectural. Traffic is filtered in the cloud before it reaches your WordPress server, rather than relying only on code running inside the site. That arrangement can reduce the load from hostile requests and is attractive for busy sites or organizations that want security operations outside the WordPress dashboard.

Reviewers describe the core WAF as a paid feature. The published Website Security Platform snapshot lists Basic at $229 per year, Pro at $339 per year, Business at $549 per year and Junior Dev at $999.98 per year for two to five sites. Separate firewall plans are listed at $9.99 per month for Basic and $19.98 per month for Pro.

Discount pages have shown lower promotional figures—$199.99 per year for Basic, $299.99 for Pro and $499 for Business with promotional codes. Those offers may expire or apply only to a first term, so do not use them as a recurring-budget assumption. Sucuri is most compelling when external filtering and post-incident assistance justify a recurring service cost; it is less suitable if you only want a free dashboard plugin.

Solid Security: guided hardening for less-technical administrators

Solid Security focuses on hardening WordPress settings, accounts and login behavior through a guided setup. Reviewers describe its protection as server-side rather than a cloud WAF, so it does not provide the same upstream traffic-filtering model as Sucuri.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Solid Security Pro is listed at $99 per year for one site, with higher tiers based on site count. The Pro package includes a firewall with virtual patching supplied by Patchstack. SolidWP’s own comparison says its listed feature set is available for $99 versus Wordfence Premium at $149; that is a vendor comparison, not an independent test or industry-wide finding.

Documentation indicates the product may be becoming “Kadence Security,” but that change is not established here. Check the current product name, migration instructions and renewal terms before buying or automating deployment.

Choose Solid Security when guided decisions—such as login protection, user checks and hardening tasks—are more valuable to you than a cloud WAF. If your requirement is edge filtering or large-scale attack absorption, use a service designed for that purpose.

Patchstack: vulnerability intelligence and virtual patching

Patchstack is aimed at a different security question: “Which installed plugins or themes have known vulnerabilities, and how can I reduce exposure before an update is available?” Its virtual-patching model can block exploit techniques associated with known issues while developers test and deploy a permanent fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes Patchstack especially useful for agencies and developers managing many sites, but it should not be mistaken for a general malware scanner. You still need file and database monitoring, backups, account protection and an incident plan if an attacker has already gained access.

2026 price comparison and what the numbers do not tell you

Product or plan Published price snapshot Billing basis Key qualification
Wordfence Premium $149.00 Per site, per year Separate licence key for each site
Solid Security Pro $99 Single site, per year Higher tiers vary by site count
Sucuri Website Security Basic $229 Per year Platform plan; promotional pages may show different first-term prices
Sucuri Website Security Pro $339 Per year Platform plan
Sucuri Website Security Business $549 Per year Platform plan
Sucuri Junior Dev $999.98 Per year Listed for two to five sites

Sucuri Firewall Pro $19.98 Per month Firewall-only listing
Patchstack Developer $79 monthly or $69 monthly on annual billing 25 sites Additional five-site blocks listed at $12.50 per month

These figures are not directly interchangeable. Wordfence and Solid Security quote a per-site annual licence, Patchstack emphasizes a monthly price with a site bundle, and Sucuri separates platform packages from firewall-only plans. Add the number of sites, expected renewal price, taxes, support level and cleanup coverage before comparing totals.

How to choose the right plugin

Choose by your primary risk

  • Undetected malware or suspicious file changes: start with a scanner-led product such as Wordfence, then maintain tested backups.
  • High request volume or attacks that threaten server capacity: prioritize a cloud WAF such as Sucuri.
  • Known vulnerable plugins across many client sites: prioritize Patchstack’s vulnerability alerts and virtual patching.
  • Unclear settings and limited technical confidence: use Solid Security’s guided hardening workflow.

Choose by site count and budget

For one site, compare the free Wordfence tier with the $99 annual Solid Security Pro entry price and any paid WAF you genuinely need. For an agency, calculate the cost of every site under its own licence rules: Wordfence Premium is priced per site, while Patchstack Developer bundles 25 sites. A low per-site figure can become expensive if the plan has a small allowance or charges separately for response work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose by who will respond to an incident

If you or your administrator will investigate alerts, a plugin dashboard may be enough. If downtime or compromise requires an external team, examine Sucuri’s cleanup focus or Wordfence’s Care and Response tiers. Confirm what “cleanup,” monitoring, response time and after-hours coverage include; the product name alone does not define the service level.

Installation and first-day configuration

  1. Take a verified backup. Export the database and WordPress files, store a copy outside the hosting account and confirm that you can restore it before changing security settings.
  2. Update the foundation. In the WordPress dashboard, open Dashboard > Updates and apply current WordPress, plugin and theme updates. Remove inactive software you no longer need.
  3. Install only from a trusted source. Open Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for the exact plugin name and check the author, active-install information and update date before installing. Upload a vendor-supplied package only when you can verify its origin and licence.
  4. Run the guided setup. Complete the plugin’s onboarding checklist rather than accepting every option blindly. Record changes to login limits, IP allowlists, country rules and XML-RPC or REST settings so you can reverse an accidental lockout.
  5. Enable administrator two-factor authentication. Enroll at least two trusted administrators, save recovery codes offline and test a second login session before ending the first one.
  6. Run an initial scan or vulnerability check. Let the first scan finish, review each finding and distinguish a confirmed malicious file from a changed-but-legitimate core or custom file. Do not delete files automatically without a restorable backup.
  7. Set alert routing. Send high-severity alerts to an address that is monitored outside the WordPress site. Test delivery, because an alert stored only in a compromised dashboard is not a dependable notification.
  8. Document the recovery path. Write down hosting access, registrar access, backup locations, emergency contacts and the steps for disabling a rule that blocks legitimate visitors.

Hardening measures no plugin replaces

  • Use unique administrator passwords stored in a password manager, and remove dormant administrator accounts.
  • Give editors and contractors the lowest role that lets them do their work; do not share administrator credentials.
  • Keep WordPress core, plugins, themes and PHP within supported versions, and remove abandoned extensions.
  • Use automatic updates where you can test them, and schedule manual review for payment, membership and heavily customized sites.
  • Keep at least one backup isolated from the production server and perform restoration tests on a schedule.
  • Protect hosting, database, registrar and email accounts with two-factor authentication; a plugin cannot secure an email account that can reset WordPress access.
  • Use HTTPS, restrict server administration, and ask your host about malware isolation, web-server logs and rate limiting.
  • Monitor unexpected new users, scheduled tasks, outbound email spikes and changes to theme or plugin files.

What to do when a scan or alert reports a compromise

  1. Record the alert, affected paths, timestamps and the account that triggered it. Preserve logs before rotating or deleting anything.
  2. Put the site into a maintenance or read-only state if practical, and stop forms, checkout or other functions that could expose customer data.
  3. Change hosting, database, WordPress, SSH, FTP, registrar and email credentials from a clean device. Revoke unknown sessions and application passwords.
  4. Compare files and database content with a known-good backup or a clean package. Remove unauthorized code only after preserving evidence needed for investigation.
  5. Patch the vulnerable plugin, theme or WordPress version, or temporarily remove it. A virtual patch is a containment measure, not proof that the underlying flaw is fixed.
  6. Restore to a clean environment when integrity cannot be established, then rescan and monitor outbound traffic, new users and file changes.
  7. Notify affected users or regulators when your legal obligations require it. Keep a written timeline for hosting support and any professional response service.

Common buying and configuration mistakes

  • Choosing by a feature-count list: a local scanner, cloud WAF and virtual-patching service address different failure modes.
  • Assuming “free” means identical protection: Wordfence’s free tier has slower rule and signature delivery, Sucuri’s core WAF is described as paid, and Patchstack’s free allowance is not consistently stated.
  • Comparing monthly and annual prices without normalizing them: convert billing periods and include every site, renewal and support charge.
  • Installing two aggressive firewalls without testing: overlapping rules can block administrators, caches, APIs or legitimate crawlers. Stage one change, test key workflows and keep a recovery route.
  • Ignoring false positives: investigate blocked requests and scanner findings before deleting code or allowing a broad IP range.
  • Relying on a plugin as the backup: keep independent, restorable backups because a compromised administrator can alter anything inside WordPress.
  • Leaving an abandoned plugin active: no security product can make an unmaintained extension safe indefinitely. Replace it or remove it.

Bottom line

Start with Wordfence if you run one ordinary WordPress site and want the widest free baseline of firewall, scanning and login controls. Pay for faster rules or response help when the site’s risk justifies it. Select Sucuri for cloud WAF filtering and cleanup-oriented support, Solid Security for guided server-side hardening, and Patchstack for vulnerability-focused protection across developer or agency portfolios. Re-check every price, site allowance and service promise on the vendor’s current page before purchase, because the figures above are 2026 snapshots and several plans change by billing period or promotion.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
