The best host depends on how your sites are grouped, who manages them, and how much isolation they need. A shared plan is usually the lowest-cost route for a small network. Managed WordPress hosting is safer for business-critical sites, while a self-sized cloud server often gives agencies the lowest cost per client site. Before paying, confirm the plan’s site limit, WordPress Multisite support, wildcard SSL, staging, backups, and resource policy—these details vary more than headline prices suggest.
First decide whether you need WordPress Multisite
“Running multiple sites” can mean two different architectures:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Separate WordPress installations: each domain has its own files, database, plugins, updates, and failure boundary.
- One WordPress Multisite network: a single WordPress installation serves a main site and subsites from subdomains or mapped domains.
Multisite centralizes updates, users, themes, and many settings. That is convenient for a school, franchise, publication, or brand family. It also increases the blast radius of an error: a vulnerable plugin, bad update, or exhausted database can affect every site in the network. Separate installations require more administration but make it easier to isolate clients and restore one site without disturbing the others.
Ask these questions before choosing a plan:
- Will all sites share administrators, themes, and plugins?
- Do individual sites need different PHP settings, deployment schedules, or security policies?
- Must a compromised site be unable to read neighboring sites’ files?
- Will you use subdomains such as
store.example.com, or unrelated domains?
If the answers point to independent ownership or strict isolation, use separate installations even when the host advertises an unlimited site count. If the sites are centrally managed and intentionally share a platform, Multisite can reduce repetitive work.

How the main hosting models charge
| Model | How you pay | Strength | Trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shared, per plan | One monthly plan covers a stated number of sites or an “unlimited” allowance | Lowest entry cost and simple control panel | CPU, memory, database, and neighboring accounts are shared | Small networks and low-traffic sites |
| Managed WordPress, per plan or add-on | Higher base price; extra sites may be added individually | Managed updates, backups, support, staging, and WordPress-focused tooling | Site caps and Multisite features can be gated by plan | Business-critical sites and teams that want less server work |
| Cloud server, per server | One server allocation is sized for all sites | Predictable capacity and a lower marginal cost as the site count grows | You or an agency must manage capacity, security, and more of the stack | Agencies and developers with many client sites |
| Per-site platform | A separate fee for every site | Clear accounting and simple client handoff | Total cost rises linearly with every site | Small portfolios where isolation and billing clarity matter most |
An “unlimited sites” label does not mean unlimited CPU, RAM, storage I/O, or database connections. Read the resource and fair-use language, not just the site count.
Current options for multiple WordPress sites
Prices below are figures reported in search-result summaries available on October 14, 2026. Several are promotional, conflicting, or not confirmed on the provider’s own pricing page. Treat them as comparison points and verify the checkout price, renewal rate, taxes, storage, traffic allowance, and site limits before ordering.
| Provider or tool | Multi-site approach | Quoted pricing or limit | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kinsta | Managed WordPress with optional site add-ons | About $35/month in one 2026 review; an additional site add-on is quoted at $30/month | Billing documentation says Multisite is allowed on all plans except Single 35k visits and Single 20GB bandwidth; another knowledge-base page says support begins at WP 2 and above |
| WP Engine | Managed WordPress Multisite extension | One review quotes Growth at $109/month for 10 sites; official site limits were not established | Multisite requires the product extension and conversion in the User Portal; subsite domain mapping requires Advanced Network |
| SiteGround | Shared hosting, with GrowBig as the commonly cited Multisite tier | Reviews quote $4.99 to $14.99/month; the lower figure is likely promotional | Multisite is enabled in wp-config.php; free Let’s Encrypt wildcard certificates use DNS verification |
| Cloudways | One self-sized cloud server for many sites | DigitalOcean-based figures are quoted from $6.60 to $8.25/month, a conflict that needs confirmation | Capacity is shared across your sites, so sizing and monitoring are your responsibility |
| InstaWP | Per-site platform | Starter quoted at $5 per site | Figure comes from a comparison and is low confidence; check current inclusions |
| CloudPress | Per-site platform | Basic quoted at $12 per site | Figure comes from a comparison and is low confidence |
| A2 Hosting | Shared plans advertised in comparisons as unlimited-site options | Current price and resource limits were not verified | Confirm whether “unlimited” applies to separate installations, Multisite, or both |
| HostArmada | Shared plans advertised in comparisons as unlimited-site options | Current price and resource limits were not verified | Check site caps, inode limits, staging, and wildcard SSL before purchase |
Managed hosts for business-critical networks
Kinsta: strong fit when managed operations matter
Kinsta is positioned as a premium managed option. Its billing documentation indicates that WordPress Multisite is permitted on most plans, with exceptions listed for the Single 35k-visits and Single 20GB-bandwidth plans. A separate knowledge-base page gives a different starting point, saying support begins at WP 2 and higher. Because those statements conflict, confirm eligibility for the exact plan in writing before migration.
Additional sites are handled as WordPress site add-ons. The quoted add-on includes staging and a DNS zone, which is useful when every site needs its own test environment. Kinsta’s Cloudflare integration provides free SSL with wildcard support for verified domains, an important requirement for subdomain-based networks.
The practical trade-off is cost: you are paying for managed infrastructure and support rather than the lowest cost per site. Enterprise custom pricing is reported as starting at $500/month, but that figure is low-confidence and should be treated only as an indication that larger deployments are sales-assisted.

WP Engine: capable Multisite workflow, but budget for the extension
WP Engine requires its Multisite product extension. You convert the environment to Multisite in the User Portal rather than simply flipping a WordPress setting and continuing under a standard plan. If each subsite must use its own mapped domain, the Advanced Network is required.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That domain-mapping dependency should shape your architecture. A subdomain network is simpler; a network containing unrelated customer domains may require the extra networking product, DNS work, and certificate planning. Additional SSL, including wildcard coverage, is described in a separate guide rather than clearly included by default, so obtain confirmation for your domain pattern.
One review quotes a Growth plan at $109 per month for 10 sites, but that is not an official, verified limit. Ask for the current site allowance, Multisite surcharge, staging environments, backup retention, and traffic overage policy in the same quote.
Budget shared hosting for a small network
SiteGround: a practical low-cost Multisite path
SiteGround’s GrowBig plan is the tier most often associated with WordPress Multisite. The published figures found in reviews range from $4.99 to $14.99 per month; the lower number is probably an introductory promotion. Compare renewal pricing and confirm whether the allowance covers separate WordPress installations, one Multisite network, or both.
The setup flow is concrete: install WordPress through Site Tools, then enable Multisite in wp-config.php. SiteGround Optimizer supports Multisite and can force HTTPS for each site from Network Admin. Free Let’s Encrypt wildcard certificates are available, but issuance and renewal use DNS verification only. That means your DNS provider and delegation must permit the required records.

An older SiteGround article said Multisite did not work with newer features. Treat that statement as outdated unless current support tells you otherwise; test the exact plugin, caching mode, and PHP version you plan to use in staging.
Unlimited-site shared plans: verify the word “unlimited”
Comparisons also list A2 Hosting and HostArmada as low-cost unlimited-site choices. Current prices, resource limits, and Multisite behavior were not verified. Before relying on either for a network, ask support for four written answers: the maximum simultaneous PHP workers, database limits, whether wildcard SSL is included, and whether staging is available for every site.
Cloudways-style per-server hosting for agencies
A per-server model changes the cost calculation. Instead of buying a plan with a fixed site allowance, you select a server with a defined amount of CPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth, then place multiple WordPress sites on it. Cloudways is commonly used this way; DigitalOcean-based prices are quoted between $6.60 and $8.25 per month, but the conflicting figures require verification.
This model is attractive when you manage many client sites because the marginal cost of another lightweight site can be small until the server is full. It also makes you responsible for capacity planning. A sudden traffic spike, backup job, or resource-heavy plugin on one client site can slow every other site on the server.
- Set per-site PHP worker and memory expectations before onboarding clients.
- Monitor CPU, RAM, disk I/O, database load, and response time—not just uptime.
- Keep a documented procedure for resizing or moving one site to its own server.
- Separate client credentials and restrict access to only the site each person manages.
How to choose by portfolio size and risk
| Your situation | Most sensible starting point | Why | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two to five low-traffic sites owned by one person | Shared plan with confirmed Multisite or multiple-install support | Lowest administration and monthly cost | Wildcard SSL, staging, backups, inode limits, and renewal price |
| Several marketing sites for one business | Managed hosting if downtime or updates carry a business cost | Central support and safer deployment workflow | Whether the exact plan permits Multisite and how extra sites are billed |
| Unrelated client sites | Separate installations on a managed platform or a properly sized cloud server | Better ownership and security boundaries | Per-site backups, user isolation, migration tools, and monitoring |
| Subdomain-heavy network | Any host that explicitly supports wildcard SSL and wildcard DNS | New subsites can use HTTPS without issuing a certificate one by one | DNS verification method and certificate renewal responsibility |
| Many small client sites | Per-server cloud hosting or a per-site platform, depending on staffing | Per-server lowers marginal cost; per-site simplifies billing and isolation | Who handles patching, incident response, and capacity upgrades |
Set up a WordPress Multisite network safely
- Inventory the sites. Record domains, DNS providers, owners, traffic, storage, email dependencies, plugins, PHP requirements, and recovery contacts.
- Confirm the host prerequisites. Get written confirmation of Multisite eligibility, wildcard DNS, wildcard SSL, staging, backup retention, and the maximum resource allowance.
- Create a full backup. Export every database and copy
wp-content. Store at least one copy outside the hosting account and test that it can be restored. - Install a clean WordPress instance. On SiteGround, this is done through Site Tools. Use HTTPS from the beginning and avoid building production sites before the network decision is final.
- Enable the network feature. Add the Multisite permission in wp-config.php, then open the WordPress Network Setup screen. WordPress will provide additional configuration lines for wp-config.php and .htaccess; copy those exact lines and complete the administrator re-login.
- Choose subdomains or subdirectories. Subdomains suit independent brands but require wildcard DNS and certificate support. Subdirectories are simpler when every site belongs under one domain.
- Configure DNS and certificates. Point the required records to the host, complete DNS validation if the certificate provider requires it, and test the main domain plus a newly created subsite over HTTPS.
- Create a staging copy. Test plugin updates, theme changes, caching, forms, logins, cron jobs, and domain mapping before touching production.
- Set network policies. Decide which themes and plugins site administrators may activate, who can create sites, and how inactive sites are archived.
- Monitor after launch. Check error logs, PHP worker saturation, database growth, backup completion, certificate expiry, and each site’s front end and administrative login.
Security and recovery controls you should require
Multisite concentrates risk, so evaluate controls at the network level rather than checking whether a host merely advertises “WordPress security.” Require:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common failure points and fixes
Wildcard HTTPS works for the main site but not new subsites
Confirm that the certificate actually covers the required wildcard name and that DNS points the wildcard record to the correct endpoint. If issuance uses DNS validation, add the requested record at the authoritative DNS provider, not merely in a secondary control panel.
A plan allows several sites but rejects Multisite
Site count and Multisite support are separate entitlements. Ask whether the restriction applies to the plan, the environment, the domain-mapping product, or the server configuration. If the host cannot provide a clear answer, use separate installations or choose a plan with documented support.
One site slows the entire network
Measure PHP workers, database queries, scheduled tasks, and storage I/O. Disable or replace the offending plugin, add caching where compatible, and move the heavy site to its own environment if isolation is more economical than continually resizing the shared resource pool.
A plugin update breaks every site
Restore the affected version from staging or backup, restrict network-wide plugin activation, and establish a change window. Test updates against representative subsites, including the largest database and the most customized theme.

Mapped domains redirect incorrectly
Check the site’s canonical URL, DNS records, HTTPS state, reverse-proxy settings, and any domain-mapping extension. Mixed HTTP/HTTPS settings can create redirect loops even when the certificate itself is valid.

Calculate the real cost
Compare total operating cost, not the introductory number shown on a landing page. Add:
- Base plan or server fee.
- Per-site add-ons or Multisite extensions.
- Premium backups, staging, malware scanning, or wildcard certificates if excluded.
- Domain registration, DNS hosting, and email service.
- Overage charges for visits, bandwidth, storage, or additional PHP workers.
- Staff or agency time for updates, monitoring, migrations, and incident response.
For a per-site platform, multiply the current site fee by the number of active sites and include any minimum commitment. For a per-server platform, divide the server cost by the number of sites you can safely run at your target resource level—not by the theoretical maximum.
Bottom line
Choose a budget shared plan for a small, low-risk network only after confirming Multisite, wildcard SSL, staging, backups, and resource limits. Choose Kinsta or WP Engine when managed operations and support justify a premium, but verify plan gating, extensions, domain mapping, and current site limits. Choose a Cloudways-style server when you manage many sites and can monitor and resize the infrastructure yourself. If sites have different owners or security requirements, separate installations are usually safer than placing everything in one Multisite network.
