For most new blogs, start with a reputable shared WordPress plan and judge it by the renewal price, not the advertised introductory rate. A low-cost plan from Bluehost, SiteGround, DreamHost or InMotion is usually sufficient for a personal or small business blog. Choose managed WordPress hosting such as Kinsta, WP Engine or Rocket.net when you expect heavier traffic, need a hands-off service, or require stronger staging, backup and support workflows.
Introductory prices in 2026 roundups are commonly available only for the first billing term. The amount charged at renewal is the figure that determines your long-term budget. Prices below are figures reported by third-party comparison sites rather than independently verified vendor quotes; confirm the checkout price, term length, taxes, storage limits and renewal rate before paying.

| Use case | Most suitable direction | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New personal blog with modest traffic | Budget shared hosting | Lowest ongoing cost and enough capacity for normal posts, images and a small plugin set. |
| Blog owner who wants a familiar mainstream option | Bluehost | Listed on WordPress.org’s recommended-hosts page and commonly sold with a guided setup, CDN and WordPress-focused tools. |
| Blog that values support and managed features on a shared plan | SiteGround | Offers a WordPress-oriented environment, but its reported renewal price is substantially higher than its introductory price. |
| Long-term cost sensitivity | DreamHost or InMotion | Both have relatively clear entry and renewal figures in 2026 roundups; compare the exact term and guarantee before ordering. |
| High traffic, agency work or minimal maintenance | Kinsta, WP Engine or Rocket.net | Managed infrastructure, operational support and higher-end tooling justify the larger monthly bill. |
| Least technical maintenance possible | WordPress.com | A fully hosted service handles more of the server layer than self-hosted WordPress. |
There is no independently verified speed, uptime or traffic-capacity benchmark supporting a universal winner. Your decision should therefore start with renewal cost, management responsibility, support, backups and the resources included in the specific plan.
What WordPress hosting provides
Self-hosted WordPress consists of the WordPress software running on a web server that you rent from a hosting company. The host supplies the server, storage, database, network connection and control panel. You remain responsible for the WordPress installation, themes, plugins, content and, unless the plan is managed, much of the maintenance.

Shared hosting
Shared hosting places multiple customer websites on the same server environment. The provider spreads hardware and administration costs across those accounts, which keeps the monthly price low. It is a sensible starting point for a new blog whose traffic and resource use are still predictable. The trade-off is less control over server tuning and less guaranteed headroom during traffic spikes. Published plan pages did not establish standardized visitor thresholds, so do not assume that a stated number of websites equals a guaranteed amount of CPU or memory.
Managed WordPress hosting
Managed services take on more operational work, which can include WordPress updates, security monitoring, backups, caching, staging and technical support. They cost more because the provider is selling administration and infrastructure rather than only disk space and a database. Managed hosting is most useful when downtime has a business cost, several people deploy changes, or you would rather pay for support than troubleshoot the server yourself.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fully hosted WordPress
A fully hosted service such as WordPress.com keeps the hosting layer tightly integrated with the WordPress product. This minimizes server decisions and maintenance, but it can impose plan-specific limits on plugins, themes, storage or advanced configuration. Check those limits before choosing it for a blog that may later need custom code or unusual integrations.
Budget shared hosts compared
The following figures were reported by 2026 review roundups. They are not vendor-page quotations and may change with promotions, currency, taxes, billing term or account location. Treat them as a comparison starting point, not a promise of what you will be charged.
| Provider and plan reference | Reported introductory price | Reported renewal price | Term or guarantee detail | What the reports emphasize |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bluehost | $1.99–$3.99 per month, depending on plan and promotion; one report lists $2.99 | One report lists $9.99 per month | Exact term varies by promotion | A $2.99 plan was described as supporting 10 websites, a CDN and AI setup tools. |
| SiteGround | $2.99 per month on a reported 12-month term | $17.99 per month; GrowBig was reported at $29.99 after a $4.99 introduction | 12-month introductory term in the cited comparison | Renewal can be several times the first-term rate, so calculate the second-year budget. |
| DreamHost Launch | About $2.89 per month in one comparison and $2.59 in another | $10.99 per month in one comparison | Reports mention both a standard 30-day guarantee and a 97-day guarantee; verify which applies to your purchase | Conflicting published figures make direct checkout verification especially important. |
| InMotion WP Core | $3.69 per month | $11.49 per month | Billing term not established in the cited summary | Reported pricing sits between the lowest introductory offers and higher-renewal plans. |
Bluehost: a mainstream starting point
Bluehost appears on WordPress.org’s 2026 recommended-hosts page, which describes it as the longest-running recommended host on that page. The same page also lists Pressable and another provider, but inclusion should not be read as a performance guarantee: WordPress.org says its selection criteria are not fully specified and that some listed hosts return part of a referral fee to WordPress.org. Consider the listing one trust signal, then evaluate the actual plan.

Third-party roundups put introductory Bluehost prices between $1.99 and $3.99 per month, with one $2.99 option described as including 10 websites, a CDN and AI-assisted setup tools. A reported renewal figure for that option is $9.99 per month. Confirm whether the advertised number assumes a multi-year prepayment, whether the features are limited to a particular tier, and whether backups or security add-ons cost extra.
SiteGround: feature-rich shared hosting with a steep reset
Roundups report a $2.99 monthly entry rate for a 12-month term and a $17.99 monthly renewal. The GrowBig tier is reported at $4.99 initially and $29.99 on renewal. That spread can make the first invoice look inexpensive while the second year becomes a major part of your budget. SiteGround may fit a blogger who values its managed WordPress tooling and support, but compare the renewal total with alternatives before committing to a long prepayment.
DreamHost: check the guarantee and exact term
DreamHost’s Launch plan appears around $2.59–$2.89 per month in different 2026 comparisons, with a reported $10.99 renewal. The guarantee is also described inconsistently: one source cites the standard 30 days and another notes a 97-day guarantee. Because those are materially different refund windows, read the current terms shown for your region and plan rather than relying on a roundup table.
InMotion WP Core: a middle-ground price profile
InMotion’s WP Core plan is reported at $3.69 per month initially and $11.49 per month on renewal. The available summary does not establish the billing term behind those numbers. Ask whether the price requires annual or multi-year payment, what backup retention is included, and whether staging, email and migration assistance are part of the quoted tier.
Other low-cost names
IONOS and GreenGeeks also appear in low introductory-price searches, but the available information does not establish comparable renewal figures, resource limits or feature details. Do not rank them against the table above without checking those missing variables.

Managed WordPress options for larger or hands-off blogs
| Provider | Reported starting price | Best fit described in 2026 comparisons | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kinsta | From $35 per month | Large or complex projects that need strong infrastructure and managed operations | One review characterizes it as expensive; the higher cost is justified only if the operational benefits matter to you. |
| WP Engine | About $20–$30 per month, depending on the source | Agencies and larger sites | Published starting figures vary; check the current plan, visitor allowance and overage policy. |
| Rocket.net | From $30 per month | Sites prioritizing managed delivery and predictable billing | One comparison says it has no renewal-price increases; verify the current contract and included limits. |
| Cloudways | From $11 per month | Users wanting a managed control layer with multiple installs | One source reports unlimited installs; confirm what the selected underlying infrastructure, bandwidth and support tier actually include. |
| WordPress.com | About $2.75–$4 per month | Readers who want the least server maintenance | Plan capabilities, plugin access and storage vary; select a tier that supports your intended design and integrations. |
When the premium is worthwhile
Paying $20–$35 or more each month can be rational when a failed update, slow incident response or manual backup would cost more than the subscription. Agencies may also value staging environments, centralized sites and support escalation. For a new personal blog with no revenue and modest readership, those benefits are usually unnecessary at launch.
Use PHP 8.4 as your technical checklist
WordPress.org’s minimum requirements page recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS support. The Make WordPress Hosting Handbook recommends PHP 8.4 or later for production. Ask a prospective host which PHP versions are available in the control panel and whether you can switch versions safely. A host that cannot offer a supported PHP release is a poor foundation regardless of its promotional price.
- PHP: Prefer PHP 8.4 or later for a new production blog, while checking that your themes and plugins support it.
- Database: Look for MariaDB 10.11 or later or MySQL 8.0 or later.
- HTTPS: Confirm that an SSL certificate can be enabled for the domain without a separate, recurring charge.
- Backups: Ask how often backups run, how long they are retained and whether restoration is self-service.
- Staging: Useful when you need to test plugin or theme updates before changing the live site.
- Support: Check hours, contact methods and whether WordPress troubleshooting is included or billed separately.
- Resource policy: Read CPU, memory, inode, bandwidth and fair-use language instead of relying on an “unlimited” label.
How to choose a plan step by step
- Estimate the first year and the steady-state year. Multiply the introductory monthly rate by the prepaid term, then multiply the renewal rate by 12. Include domain registration, email, backups, premium plugins and taxes in separate lines.
- Decide who will maintain WordPress. Choose shared hosting if you can update plugins, monitor backups and troubleshoot basic issues. Choose managed hosting if those tasks should be handled or supported by the provider.
- Set a realistic growth requirement. List your expected sites, editors, media storage, newsletter tools, ecommerce features and traffic campaigns. Do not pay for enterprise capacity merely because a plan advertises a large website count.
- Verify the technical stack. Confirm PHP 8.4 availability, a current database engine, HTTPS, a usable control panel and a documented migration path.
- Read the renewal and cancellation clauses. Check when the introductory period ends, whether renewal is automatic, how refunds are calculated after a renewal charge and whether a domain refund is excluded.
- Test support before migrating. Ask a specific pre-sales question about PHP versions, staging or restore procedures. The clarity and speed of the answer are useful evidence about the support experience.
- Keep an independent backup. Before changing DNS, export the WordPress database and copy the
wp-contentdirectory to storage you control. A host’s backup is not a substitute for a copy you can access if the account is locked.
Calculating the real cost
Suppose a plan is advertised at $2.99 per month for 12 months and renews at $17.99. The first hosting term totals $35.88 before tax; a full renewal year totals $215.88. A plan advertised at $3.69 and renewing at $11.49 totals $44.28 for the first 12 months and $137.88 for a renewal year. Those simple calculations often change the ranking more than a few cents of introductory price.
For multi-year promotions, divide the prepaid invoice by the number of months to find the effective introductory rate, but still record the first renewal date and amount. Also ask whether the renewal rate applies to every website on the account, whether a free domain becomes paid, and whether optional security or backup services renew separately.

- Register or connect the domain. Use the host’s nameservers only after you know how to move the domain away later. Keep the registrar account secured with multifactor authentication.
- Install WordPress. Use the host’s one-click installer or upload the official package. Set a unique administrator username and a long password; do not use “admin.”
- Enable HTTPS. Issue the included certificate, force HTTPS redirects and test the homepage, login page and media URLs in a private browser window.
- Configure updates and backups. Turn on automatic minor WordPress updates where appropriate, schedule backups and perform a test restore before publishing important work.
- Install only necessary plugins. Remove inactive themes and plugins, keep every component updated and check compatibility before enabling PHP 8.4.
- Configure caching and images. Use the host’s documented cache or CDN settings, resize large images before upload and avoid stacking several plugins that perform the same optimization.
- Publish a staging test. If staging is included, clone the site, update plugins there and verify forms, menus, search and analytics before applying changes to production.
- Monitor the first month. Review error logs, backup notices, storage growth and support responses. Early evidence is more useful than a launch-day speed impression.
Migrating an existing blog
Migration is more than copying visible pages. Export the database, copy media and theme files, record the current PHP version and inventory redirects, cron jobs, email forms and external integrations. Lower the DNS time-to-live before the move if you control it, but remember that DNS changes can still take time to propagate.

- Create a complete backup and verify that it can be downloaded and opened.
- Build the new WordPress installation on a temporary URL or staging domain.
- Import the database and
wp-content, then update the site’s URL only when the destination is ready. - Check permalinks, redirects, images, forms, scheduled posts, search indexing settings and login credentials.
- Prevent indexing on the temporary copy so search engines do not treat it as duplicate content.
- Change DNS, monitor both versions during propagation and keep the old account active until requests and mail are working normally.
- After the move, renew HTTPS, test canonical URLs and submit the sitemap again if the domain or URL structure changed.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the lowest first-term number
A $1.99 or $2.99 rate may require a long prepayment and can become $10–$18 or more at renewal. Compare total first-term cost and the next 12 months side by side.
Assuming “managed” means every task is included
Managed plans differ. Some update WordPress core but leave plugins, malware cleanup, email or custom code to you. Obtain a written list of included maintenance and paid support before purchase.
Equating a CDN with unlimited performance
A CDN can reduce delivery time for cacheable assets, but it does not remove PHP, database or plugin bottlenecks. No independently verified benchmark establishes a universal speed winner among the providers listed here.
Ignoring backups until after a failure
Ask for retention and restoration details, then perform a test restore. A backup that cannot be downloaded or restored is not a dependable recovery plan.
Installing too many plugins
Each plugin adds update and compatibility risk. Start with the smallest set that provides your required editorial, security, SEO and backup functions, and remove replacements you no longer use.

How WordPress.org recommendations should influence your decision
WordPress.org’s 2026 recommended-hosts page lists Pressable, Bluehost and another provider, and explains that some listed hosts donate part of a referral fee to WordPress.org when readers click through. The page also acknowledges that its selection criteria are not fully defined. This is useful context, not an independent certification of uptime, speed, support or price. WordPress.org separately points readers toward its support forums and local meetup members for recommendations, and WordPress Learn publishes a tutorial on choosing hosting. Use those community channels to validate a host against your own location and site requirements.
A practical decision rule
- Choose shared hosting when the blog is new, the budget is limited and you are comfortable handling routine WordPress updates and backups.
- Choose managed hosting when the site earns meaningful revenue, receives unpredictable campaigns, supports several editors or needs a provider to own more of the maintenance burden.
- Choose a fully hosted service when avoiding server administration matters more than unrestricted plugin and configuration access.
- Delay an upgrade until you can identify the problem a premium plan will solve; moving for a vague promise of speed wastes money.
Bottom line
For a typical 2026 blog, buy the simplest shared plan that meets the PHP, database, HTTPS, backup and support requirements, and budget for the renewal invoice from day one. Bluehost is a reasonable mainstream starting point with official WordPress.org recommendation status; SiteGround offers a feature-oriented alternative but has a notably higher reported renewal; DreamHost and InMotion deserve consideration when their current checkout totals fit your budget. Move to Kinsta, WP Engine or Rocket.net when traffic, business risk or maintenance demands justify managed pricing, and verify every current figure directly before submitting payment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I pay for a multi-year introductory deal?
Only if you have checked the renewal rate, refund terms and cancellation process and expect to keep the blog on that host through the prepaid term. A low monthly equivalent can conceal a large upfront invoice.
Is a free domain enough reason to choose one host?
No. Compare the domain’s renewal fee, transfer rules, privacy options and the hosting renewal price. A first-year domain promotion does not reduce the recurring hosting cost.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo I need managed WordPress hosting for a new blog?
Usually not. Shared hosting is adequate when you can perform updates, maintain independent backups and handle basic troubleshooting. Managed hosting becomes more valuable as downtime, traffic spikes or team operations become costly.
What should I ask support before purchasing?
Ask which PHP versions are available, how restores work, whether staging is included, what resource limits apply and whether plugin conflicts are covered. Specific answers are more useful than a generic uptime promise.
