For most sites, Site Kit by Google is the best free starting point. It is Google’s official, open-source WordPress connection for Analytics, Search Console, AdSense, PageSpeed Insights, Tag Manager and related services. Choose MonsterInsights or ExactMetrics when you need guided GA4 reports for WooCommerce, forms, campaigns or affiliate links inside wp-admin. Choose Independent Analytics or WP Statistics when keeping visitor data in WordPress, using cookieless measurement or reducing third-party dependence matters more than Google ecosystem integration.

The right choice depends less on a star rating than on four questions: where data is stored, what consent your visitors require, how deeply you need to measure actions, and whether your team wants reports in WordPress or in an external analytics property.

Quick recommendations

  • Best free, official Google connection: Site Kit by Google.
  • Best for beginners who need actionable GA4 reports: MonsterInsights.
  • Best guided alternative for real-time and ecommerce dashboards: ExactMetrics.
  • Best privacy-oriented, WordPress-native option: Independent Analytics.
  • Best established self-hosted and cookieless option: WP Statistics.
  • Worth considering for GA4, events and ecommerce at a dated comparison price: Analytify.

These recommendations describe different jobs. A publisher measuring readership may need only page and post views. A store needs product views, checkout steps, purchases and revenue. A membership site needs sign-ups and protected-content journeys. A privacy-sensitive organization may prefer local or cookieless statistics even if that means fewer advertising and audience reports.

What to decide before installing a plugin

Where will the data live?

Site Kit, MonsterInsights and ExactMetrics primarily connect WordPress to Google Analytics 4, so Google processes the analytics data in the connected property. That makes Google’s broader reporting and integrations available, but it also creates a third-party data and consent decision. Independent Analytics and WP Statistics are designed to provide statistics within WordPress; WP Statistics is described as self-hosted and offers a cookieless mode. Local storage can reduce external dependence, but you must still check your legal basis, retention, access controls and hosting obligations.

What do you need to measure?

Page views answer “which articles were read?” They do not answer “which campaign produced a sale?” or “where did a checkout fail?” Look for event, form, ecommerce, campaign and affiliate-link reporting if those questions affect revenue. MonsterInsights documents reports for ecommerce conversion, average order value, top products, referral sources, forms, PPC ads, campaigns, source and medium, landing pages, technology, speed, search keywords and affiliate links. ExactMetrics advertises acquisition, real-time visitor behavior and ecommerce reporting for WooCommerce and several membership, donation and learning platforms.

Where does your team work?

A WordPress dashboard is convenient for editors and clients who should not navigate the full GA4 interface. It can also hide detail that is available in Google Analytics. Decide whether a summary in wp-admin is enough, or whether analysts need explorations, custom dimensions, audience building and exports in Google’s interface.

How much configuration can you support?

No-code onboarding reduces tagging errors, but it does not eliminate measurement design. You still need to define conversions, exclude internal traffic where appropriate, test checkout events and document consent behavior. A plugin that promises automatic setup cannot decide which business actions matter to you.

Site Kit by Google: best free official starting point

Google’s WordPress.org listing calls Site Kit “the official WordPress plugin from Google for insights about how people find and use your site.” It is free and open source. Its dashboard can connect Search Console, Analytics, AdSense, PageSpeed Insights, Tag Manager, Sign in with Google, Reader Revenue Manager and Google Ads. You can view whole-site trends and metrics for individual posts, which is useful when editors need a quick answer without opening several Google products.

Requirements

  • A live, publicly reachable WordPress site.
  • WordPress 5.2 or newer.
  • PHP 7.4 or newer.
  • A modern web browser.
  • An available WordPress REST API.

When it is the right choice

Use Site Kit when your organization already operates Google Analytics and Search Console, wants an official connector and does not need a paid reporting layer. It is especially practical for a content publisher: Search Console can show search visibility beside Analytics engagement, while PageSpeed Insights gives performance context.

Important trade-off

Site Kit does not make privacy obligations disappear. If Analytics uses cookies or sends personal data, configure consent and regional controls for your audience, document the purpose of collection and avoid collecting information you do not need. The plugin’s Google ecosystem is a strength for integration and a dependency for data governance.

MonsterInsights: guided reports for business decisions

MonsterInsights is aimed at people who want GA4 answers in WordPress rather than a blank analytics workspace. Its documented reports cover ecommerce conversion, average order value, top products, referral sources, form conversion, PPC ad tracking, campaign and source/medium performance, landing pages, technology, speed, search keywords and affiliate links. That breadth makes it a strong fit for a WooCommerce store, an agency managing several client sites or a publisher monetizing links and forms.

Cost and compatibility

The vendor’s pricing page showed a Plus introductory price of $99.50 per year in a 2026 page capture and stated that renewals are at full price. Budget using the renewal amount, not only the first-year promotion. The same page says the plugin requires at least WordPress 4.9 and works on normal WordPress installations and WordPress.com Business plans.

Use it when reports matter more than raw flexibility

MonsterInsights is useful when a non-analyst needs to answer “which landing page generated sign-ups?” or “which product and referral source produced orders?” without building custom GA4 explorations. It is less compelling if you only need basic traffic counts or if sending analytics to Google conflicts with your data policy.

ExactMetrics: no-code GA4 with real-time and commerce coverage

ExactMetrics describes a no-code setup and a dashboard containing Google Analytics reports, real-time visitor behavior, acquisition sources and ecommerce tracking. Its listed integrations include WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads, MemberPress, MemberMouse, Restrict Content Pro, GiveWP and LifterLMS. That combination suits stores, membership communities, donation sites and online courses that need more than page views.

Scale and evidence

A 2026 page capture reports over 1,000,000 active installs. Treat that as an adoption figure, not proof that it is faster or more accurate than another plugin. A customer statement on the vendor page described configuration as very simple and results as clearly displayed; that is a testimonial, not independent testing.

Choose it for a dashboard-centered workflow

ExactMetrics makes sense when stakeholders want current activity and acquisition summaries in wp-admin and the site uses one of its documented commerce or membership platforms. Verify that the specific events and checkout states you need are supported before relying on a dashboard for financial reporting.

Independent Analytics: privacy-oriented WordPress statistics

Independent Analytics is described in the official WordPress.org analytics category as “a simple, yet powerful WordPress analytics plugin that gives you privacy-friendly stats to grow your website.” The directory’s 2026 capture lists 100,000+ active installations. Its appeal is straightforward: obtain useful content and visitor statistics in WordPress without making Google Analytics the center of the measurement stack.

Best use cases

  • A publication that primarily needs article, author or category performance.
  • A small organization that wants a simpler privacy conversation than a full advertising-oriented analytics stack.
  • A team that prefers reports beside posts and pages rather than in a separate Google property.

Limitations to check

Privacy-friendly does not mean automatically compliant. Review what the plugin stores, how long it retains it and who can access it. If you need advertising attribution, advanced audience analysis or a complex WooCommerce funnel, compare its event and ecommerce coverage with a GA4-based option before switching.

WP Statistics: self-hosted and cookieless reporting

WP Statistics is presented as self-hosted, with historical reporting and a cookieless mode. A Liquid Web comparison listed dashboard reports, partial GA4 support and a free version, while noting no ecommerce tracking in its table. The local-data approach can be attractive when an organization wants to reduce third-party requests or keep statistics within its WordPress environment.

Bot traffic needs attention

The same comparative material cautions that bot counts may need filtering. If automated crawlers inflate visits, do not compare trends or campaign results until you understand the plugin’s detection and exclusion settings. Document any filtering changes so a later drop in “traffic” is not mistaken for a real audience loss.

Who should choose it

Pick WP Statistics for site-level and historical reporting where self-hosting and cookieless measurement outweigh the need for detailed store revenue attribution. For a WooCommerce operation, confirm the absence or presence of the exact purchase metrics you require rather than assuming that page-view statistics cover them.

Analytify and other lightweight alternatives

Liquid Web’s comparison listed Analytify with dashboard reports, GA4, event tracking, ecommerce tracking, GDPR support and a free version. Its table gave Pro a starting price of $59 per year, but that is a comparison-page figure accessed in 2026, not a permanent quote. Verify current plans and renewal pricing directly before budgeting.

Analytify is a reasonable shortlist candidate when you want a conventional GA4 connection with a WordPress dashboard and do not need the broader integrations documented for the larger reporting plugins. The free tier may be sufficient for basic reporting; test whether the events and ecommerce dimensions you need are paid features.

How to install and validate your chosen plugin

  1. Write a measurement brief. List the decisions the reports must support: article engagement, lead forms, purchases, donations, memberships, downloads or campaign attribution.
  2. Check prerequisites. Confirm the plugin’s WordPress and PHP requirements, your hosting resources, REST API availability and compatibility with your commerce or membership extensions. Site Kit specifically requires WordPress 5.2+, PHP 7.4+, a live public site, a modern browser and an available REST API; other plugins may differ.
  3. Install from the WordPress dashboard. Go to Plugins > Add New Plugin, search the exact plugin name, inspect the author and active-install information, then install and activate it. Avoid similarly named extensions.
  4. Connect only the services you need. For a Google-based plugin, authenticate the intended Google account and select the correct Analytics property and web data stream. For a WordPress-native plugin, review storage, retention and administrator-access settings.
  5. Configure consent before collecting production traffic. Align the tracking mode with your consent-management tool and the regions you serve. Do not assume a cookieless setting or a plugin label alone establishes compliance.
  6. Define conversions and exclusions. Mark the form submission, purchase, donation or membership action that represents success. Exclude internal testing traffic where your platform supports it, and record the rule.
  7. Test in a private browser session. Visit an article, trigger a form or test order, and check the plugin dashboard and connected platform. Confirm that consent denial prevents non-essential collection when that is your policy.
  8. Compare after data processing. Google reports can have processing delays; local plugins may show different bot handling or time zones. Compare like-for-like date ranges and document the reporting timezone.
  9. Protect access. Limit analytics reports to roles that need them, update the plugin and review logs for failed API connections or unusual data spikes.

Common failure modes and fixes

The dashboard is empty

Check that the correct property and data stream are connected, the tracking code is present on the public site, consent has been granted in your test session and the date range includes today. For Site Kit, confirm the REST API is reachable and that the site is publicly accessible. Newly collected Google data may not appear immediately.

Numbers do not match between plugins

Different tools can count sessions, users, page views and bots differently. Check timezone, internal-traffic filters, consent behavior, ad blockers, cache layers and whether one tool excludes known crawlers. Pick one system as the reporting authority for each KPI rather than averaging conflicting totals.

WooCommerce revenue is missing

Verify that ecommerce tracking is enabled, the checkout and thank-you pages are not blocked by caching or consent rules, and the plugin supports your payment flow and extension. Run a test order and inspect the purchase event’s value, currency, transaction ID and product items.

Traffic suddenly jumps

Look for bot activity, referral spam, a duplicated tracking tag, a consent-banner change, a campaign launch or a timezone shift. WP Statistics users should pay particular attention to the comparative warning that bot counts may require filtering.

Performance or privacy concerns arise

No independent controlled speed test or unbiased conversion study establishes that one of these plugins is objectively fastest or converts better. Audit your own page weight, requests and consent behavior in staging, then choose the smallest feature set that answers your questions.

Cost planning

Item Evidence and qualification Budget implication
Site Kit Free and open source according to Google’s WordPress.org listing No plugin license, but Google services and consent administration still require operational work
MonsterInsights Plus $99.50/year introductory price in a 2026 vendor-page capture; renewals stated at full price Use the renewal price for a realistic multi-year budget
ExactMetrics Current price not stated in the supplied material Check the live plan and renewal terms before purchase
Independent Analytics $48/year appeared in Liquid Web’s accessed-2026 comparison table Treat as a dated comparison figure and verify
WP Statistics Free version listed in Liquid Web’s comparison Review hosting, storage and maintenance costs for self-hosted data
Analytify Pro $59/year starting price in Liquid Web’s accessed-2026 table Verify current price, feature gates and renewals

Which plugin fits each site type?

Editorial or magazine site

Start with Site Kit if search visibility, page performance and basic readership are central. Choose Independent Analytics when local, privacy-oriented article statistics are more important than Google integrations. Add a guided GA4 dashboard only when editors need campaign, form or affiliate reporting.

WooCommerce store

Use MonsterInsights or ExactMetrics when product, checkout and campaign reports must be understandable in wp-admin. Validate purchase events against order records. A page-view-only or self-hosted statistics plugin is not a substitute for ecommerce attribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Membership, donation or course site

ExactMetrics explicitly lists support for MemberPress, MemberMouse, Restrict Content Pro, GiveWP and LifterLMS. Confirm the events for registration, renewal, donation and course completion that your business actually uses. Site Kit remains useful for acquisition, but it may require additional event design.

Privacy-sensitive organization

Evaluate Independent Analytics and WP Statistics first. Read their current data-storage and retention documentation, configure consent, restrict administrator access and ensure your hosting environment meets your obligations. “Self-hosted” describes location, not a complete privacy policy.

Final decision

Install Site Kit when you want a free, official and broad Google connection. Select MonsterInsights for the most business-oriented guided reports documented here, especially ecommerce, forms, campaigns and affiliate links. Select ExactMetrics when no-code setup, real-time views and a wide set of commerce or membership integrations are priorities. Select Independent Analytics for privacy-oriented WordPress-native statistics, or WP Statistics when self-hosting, historical reports and cookieless measurement are the deciding factors. Use Analytify as a lighter GA4 dashboard candidate, but verify its current pricing and feature limits.
