Marvel’s Wolverine is no longer a future release. Sony Interactive Entertainment launched Insomniac Games’ action-adventure worldwide on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026. The best older game to play before, alongside or after it is X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), because it is the clearest previous solo-Wolverine campaign. X2: Wolverine’s Revenge (2003) is a worthwhile historical alternative, while the new PS5 game is the destination for a current interpretation of Logan.
The older titles are tied to Xbox 360-era, PlayStation 2-era and earlier hardware. Their original platform lists do not prove that a current digital storefront sells them, so expect to verify region, platform and condition and, in many cases, look for a used physical copy.

Quick answer: which Wolverine game should you play?
| Rank | Game | Best for | Wolverine focus | Hardware reality |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) | The most direct older solo-Wolverine experience | Dedicated campaign built around Wolverine | Historical releases on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows, PlayStation 2, Wii and Nintendo DS; current availability may mean used copies |
| 2 | X2: Wolverine’s Revenge (2003) | A time-capsule look at an earlier interpretation | Standalone action-adventure in which you assume Wolverine’s role | Historical releases on PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, PC and Game Boy Advance; expect older hardware or used copies |
| 3 | Marvel’s Wolverine (2026) | The current Insomniac and Marvel Games interpretation | Modern action-adventure focused on Logan | PlayStation 5 exclusive; worldwide launch was September 15, 2026 |
If you want one answer, choose X-Men Origins: Wolverine before sampling the 2026 release. Choose X2: Wolverine’s Revenge only if you specifically enjoy older console design and historical comparisons. If you already own a PlayStation 5, go straight to Marvel’s Wolverine; the older games are context, not prerequisites.
How the three games fit different reader goals
You want to control Wolverine in a dedicated story
Both older recommendations put Wolverine at the center rather than treating him as a brief cameo. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the stronger first stop because it is the most direct earlier solo recommendation in this group. X2: Wolverine’s Revenge also gives you Wolverine’s role in a standalone action-adventure, but its 2003 design makes it a historical choice rather than the most convenient modern starting point.
#1 Best Overall
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
- A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
You want the closest preparation for Insomniac’s game
No older title can be presented as a mechanical or technical match for Insomniac’s PS5 production. The useful overlap is narrower: each lets you spend a full game with Wolverine as the central character. That makes X-Men Origins: Wolverine the closest thematic preparation, not proof that its systems, pacing or presentation work like the 2026 game.
You want to compare eras
Play X2: Wolverine’s Revenge first, then X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and finish with Marvel’s Wolverine. This order moves from the earliest of the three interpretations to the newest without requiring you to treat the older games as a continuous story.
1. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009): the best older solo-Wolverine pick
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the clearest recommendation for readers asking, “What is the best Wolverine game?” when they mean a game built specifically around Logan rather than an ensemble of X-Men. Activision’s launch information documents versions across several generations and formats, making it the broadest older release in this comparison.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy it earns the top older-game ranking
- Wolverine is the central playable subject, so the game answers the basic request to play as him rather than merely featuring him.
- It is newer than X2: Wolverine’s Revenge, making it the more natural historical bridge to a 2026 interpretation.
- Its dedicated campaign gives you a focused Wolverine experience before you begin Insomniac’s game.
- It has the widest documented platform spread of the two older recommendations, although that does not guarantee a current store listing.
What the release history tells you
Activision documented retail versions for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows, PlayStation 2, Wii and Nintendo DS. Those are historical release facts, not a promise of backward compatibility, a modern remaster or a currently supported digital download. A listing for one version may not work on another platform, and a disc from one region may have different compatibility from a disc sold elsewhere.
Who should choose it
- Readers who want one older game rather than a survey of Wolverine appearances.
- Players who prefer a 2009-era console or Windows release to a much older PlayStation 2 or Xbox design.
- Anyone looking for a solo-Wolverine campaign before trying Insomniac’s version.
Who should set expectations carefully
This is an older licensed game, so treat it as a period piece. The available evidence establishes its platforms and its role as a solo-Wolverine recommendation; it does not establish a current review score, completion-time statistic, modern technical performance or guaranteed storefront access. If you buy a copy, confirm the exact platform, disc condition, included manual or case, region and whether your console can run that generation of software.
2. X2: Wolverine’s Revenge (2003): the historical alternative
X2: Wolverine’s Revenge is the second standalone option. Activision described it as an action-adventure in which players assume Wolverine’s role. Its value today is historical: it shows an earlier design approach to a full Wolverine-led game and gives collectors or retro players a distinct alternative to the 2009 release.
Why it remains relevant
- It is explicitly a Wolverine-led action-adventure rather than a short bonus appearance.
- Its earlier release makes it useful for comparing how the character was handled before the 2009 game and the 2026 Insomniac title.
- It appeared on several sixth-generation platforms, so retro players may already own compatible hardware.
Documented versions and availability
The historical platform list includes PlayStation 2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, PC and Game Boy Advance. Because these systems are old, a new copy is unlikely to be the normal buying route. Used physical copies, local retro stores, second-hand marketplaces and personal collections are the realistic categories to check, but availability and prices vary by region and condition. Verify that a listing is for the exact platform you own; the Game Boy Advance version is not interchangeable with a console disc.

Who should play it first
Start here if you enjoy archival gaming, own the relevant older hardware or want the earliest interpretation in this three-game comparison. Do not choose it merely because you want the closest modern experience. Its purpose is to show where Wolverine games came from, not to stand in for a PS5 action-adventure.
3. Marvel’s Wolverine (2026): the destination game
Marvel’s Wolverine is an action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games and Marvel Games. PlayStation’s story setup has Logan rejoining Team X after a three-year absence. Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed worldwide availability on PlayStation 5 from September 15, 2026, and Insomniac’s release video states: “Let’s cut to the chase: Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15, 2026.”
What the premise means for your play order
The three-year absence and Team X setup belong to this game’s own story. You do not need to complete either older title to understand that premise. Playing an older game can give you a point of comparison for a solo Wolverine adventure, but it does not establish continuity with Insomniac’s narrative.
Who should start here
- Players who own a PlayStation 5 and want the current release rather than a historical comparison.
- Readers who searched for a game to play while waiting but have not yet updated their plans after the September 15, 2026 launch.
- Anyone who wants the Insomniac and Marvel Games interpretation specifically.
What older games can and cannot prepare you for
They can prepare you for the idea of a game organized around Wolverine as the main character. They cannot guarantee the same combat systems, camera, level structure, visual presentation, performance or storytelling approach. No dependable review score, sales figure, completion-time statistic or benchmark is established here for the older games, so those numbers should not be used to promise how long they will take or how they will run on modern hardware.
Platform and availability guide
| Game | Documented original platforms | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) | Xbox 360; PlayStation 3; Windows; PlayStation 2; Wii; Nintendo DS | Exact edition, region, disc condition, Windows requirements and whether your current console supports that platform |
| X2: Wolverine’s Revenge (2003) | PlayStation 2; Xbox; Nintendo GameCube; PC; Game Boy Advance | Console generation, disc or cartridge format, region and whether the seller has identified the correct version |
| Marvel’s Wolverine (2026) | PlayStation 5 exclusive | That you have a PS5 and are checking the current official listing for your region |
The first two rows describe original releases. They should not be read as evidence that every version is available digitally today, that a console will play a disc from another generation or that a publisher has reissued the game. For older titles, a physical or used-copy search is often more realistic than assuming a modern storefront listing exists.
How to choose in common situations
“I only want one Wolverine game.”
Pick X-Men Origins: Wolverine if you want an older solo campaign. Pick Marvel’s Wolverine if you have a PlayStation 5 and want the current release. X2: Wolverine’s Revenge is the one-game choice only when the historical angle matters more than convenience.
“I want a game before I start Marvel’s Wolverine.”
Use X-Men Origins: Wolverine as a short historical primer on the idea of a dedicated Wolverine adventure. There is no stated prerequisite story connection, so you can also start the PS5 game immediately without missing required background.
Rank #3
“I collect older console games.”
Compare X2: Wolverine’s Revenge and X-Men Origins: Wolverine by the hardware you already own. Confirm the exact edition before paying: a PlayStation 2 disc, a GameCube disc, a handheld cartridge and a Windows release are separate products even when the title is similar.

“I want the most modern option.”
Choose Marvel’s Wolverine. It is the only PlayStation 5 exclusive in this list and the only one released in 2026. The older games remain useful for comparison, but their age is part of the experience.
“I want to understand the character’s game history.”
Play in release order: X2: Wolverine’s Revenge, then X-Men Origins: Wolverine, then Marvel’s Wolverine. This order lets you observe three separate eras without assuming that their stories form one uninterrupted canon.

- Identify your hardware. Write down the exact console or Windows system you intend to use. “Xbox” or “PlayStation” is not specific enough for an older release.
- Match the listing to the platform. Check the title, edition, disc or cartridge format and region. Do not assume that a listing for one generation includes another version.
- Check condition and completeness. For used physical copies, inspect photographs, read the seller’s condition notes and confirm that the disc or cartridge is included.
- Verify compatibility. Consult the console maker’s current compatibility information or the game’s current PC requirements before purchase. Original platform support does not automatically mean modern support.
- Plan for a physical setup. Older games may require the original console, a compatible disc drive, a memory card or a controller appropriate to that system.
- Keep expectations tied to the evidence. Buy these games for their Wolverine focus and historical value, not for an unverified promise about frame rate, resolution, completion time or review quality.
- For the PS5 game, use the current official store page. Confirm your region, edition and any installation requirements at the time you buy.
Recommended play orders
Fastest route to the current game
- Start Marvel’s Wolverine on PlayStation 5.
- Play X-Men Origins: Wolverine afterward if you want an older point of comparison.
Best two-game comparison
- Play X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
- Play Marvel’s Wolverine.
This pairing gives you the clearest contrast between an older dedicated Wolverine campaign and Insomniac’s 2026 interpretation without requiring you to locate the oldest hardware.
Complete historical sequence
- X2: Wolverine’s Revenge (2003).
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009).
- Marvel’s Wolverine (2026).
Use this sequence for historical curiosity, not because one game is documented as a prerequisite for the next.
What is and is not established about these games
The documented facts support a clear ranking by role: X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the strongest older solo recommendation, X2: Wolverine’s Revenge is the historical alternative, and Marvel’s Wolverine is the current PS5 destination. The platform lists are historical release information. They do not establish current digital availability, backward compatibility, performance on modern devices or a guaranteed used-copy price.
No dependable primary evidence here supplies review scores, sales figures, completion-time statistics or technical benchmarks for the older games. A responsible buying decision should therefore rely on the type of experience and hardware you want, rather than a made-up number or an assumption that an old release behaves like a modern one.
Bottom line
For one older game, choose X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). For a deeper retro comparison, add X2: Wolverine’s Revenge (2003). For the game that the original “while you wait” wording was anticipating, play Marvel’s Wolverine on PlayStation 5: it launched worldwide on September 15, 2026, so the decision is now whether to use the older titles as context before or after the Insomniac release.
