The Technics EAH-AZ80 is the best measurement-based starting point for sound quality under $250—provided you confirm that the current US listing is below $250. RTINGS’ 2026 sound-focused roundup names it an upper mid-range pick and reports more consistent frequency response than the Sony WF-1000XM5. The Sony remains a strong alternative if your phone supports LDAC or you prefer its tuning, while the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 is worth considering when you prefer its sound and need its aptX codec options. None of those models can honestly be called “under $250” without checking a live seller price, because the available evidence does not establish current US pricing or availability.

Quick picks

Earbuds Best fit for Sound evidence Codec information Budget status
Technics EAH-AZ80 Listeners who want the most defensible measurement-led starting point RTINGS’ 2026 roundup reports better frequency-response consistency than the Sony WF-1000XM5 and selects it as an upper mid-range pick Not established in the supplied comparisons Confirm the current US price before treating it as an under-$250 choice
Sony WF-1000XM5 Listeners who like Sony’s tuning or use a phone that supports LDAC What Hi-Fi describes its sound favorably; RTINGS now places the AZ80 ahead in its upper mid-range sound roundup AAC, SBC and LDAC Current US price not established; verify before buying
Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 Listeners who prefer its tonal balance or need aptX choices RTINGS describes its sound preference trade-off against the Sony rather than a universal winner aptX options, according to RTINGS’ comparison Current US price not established; verify before buying

This is a shortlist, not a claim that one tuning is correct for every ear. In-ear seal, music preferences and phone support can change which model sounds best to you.

What “best sound quality” actually means

Sound quality is not one specification. For wireless in-ear headphones, the most useful starting point is frequency-response consistency: how closely the reproduced balance of bass, midrange and treble follows a broadly natural target. A consistent response usually makes vocals, instruments and effects easier to judge across many recordings, but a listener may still prefer a warmer, brighter or more relaxed balance.

Frequency response and tonal preference

RTINGS’ current roundup gives the EAH-AZ80 its edge over the WF-1000XM5 on response consistency. That is a comparative test result, not a guarantee that every person will prefer the Technics. Someone who enjoys a stronger bass lift, a more forward vocal range or extra treble energy may choose differently. Reviews of the Sony and Sennheiser likewise describe preference and codec trade-offs rather than a definitive ranking.

Distortion, detail and recording quality

“More detail” is often a shorthand for a preferred treble balance, cleaner separation or simply a better ear-tip seal. A highly resolving earbud cannot recover information that is absent from a heavily compressed recording. Use several familiar tracks with different demands—bass control, vocal sibilance, acoustic instruments and dense mixes—rather than judging from one spectacular demo.

Consistency across tracks

A good sound-quality choice should remain enjoyable when the playlist changes. Check a quiet vocal recording, a bass-heavy track, a cymbal-rich recording and a busy orchestral or electronic mix. If one range repeatedly draws attention away from the music, that tonal balance may not suit you even if a laboratory measurement looks strong.

1. Technics EAH-AZ80: the provisional lead pick

The EAH-AZ80 is the most defensible first audition for this brief because RTINGS’ 2026 sound-oriented roundup selects it as an upper mid-range option and reports better frequency-response consistency than the Sony WF-1000XM5. “Provisional” matters: no current official US retail listing was published below $250, and the measurement advantage does not make its tuning universally preferable.

Why start here

  • Its response consistency is the clearest documented advantage in the available comparison.
  • It is positioned as a sound-focused choice rather than a feature-count winner.
  • It gives you a useful reference point when auditioning the Sony and Sennheiser alternatives.

Who may prefer another model

If you already know that you prefer Sony’s presentation, require LDAC from a compatible phone, or favor the Sennheiser’s tonal balance, the AZ80’s test result should not override your preference. Ear shape and seal can also alter bass and treble enough to outweigh a modest response difference between models.

2. Sony WF-1000XM5: a codec-rich alternative

The WF-1000XM5 remains a credible sound-quality candidate even though RTINGS’ current roundup replaces it with the AZ80 as its upper mid-range pick. What Hi-Fi’s comparison describes the Sony’s sound favorably and lists AAC, SBC and LDAC support. That makes it especially relevant to listeners whose Android phone and playback settings can actually use LDAC.

When the Sony makes more sense

  • You prefer its tonal balance after listening to the same tracks on both models.
  • Your phone, operating system and music app support LDAC and you want to use it.
  • You find the Sony’s physical fit forms a more reliable seal in your ears.

Codec reality check

LDAC is not automatically active simply because the earbuds support it. The phone must support the codec, Bluetooth settings must permit it, and the app’s output path must not force another format. AAC and SBC remain useful fallback codecs. A stable connection and a good seal are more important than selecting a codec your phone cannot maintain.

3. Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4: choose by preference and codec needs

RTINGS’ review, updated April 20, 2026, presents the MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 and WF-1000XM5 as a preference choice with different codec selections, not as a universal first- and second-place ranking. The Sennheiser offers aptX options, while the Sony offers LDAC among its listed AAC and SBC support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to audition the MTW4

  • Your phone or computer supports the aptX variant you intend to use.
  • You prefer the Sennheiser’s balance on familiar recordings.
  • You want an alternative to the Sony’s presentation and do not need LDAC.

Do not choose from the codec label alone

Codec support describes the Bluetooth transmission path, not the complete acoustic result. The earbud’s tuning, digital signal processing, fit and seal still determine what reaches your ears. Compare the MTW4 and Sony at matched volume with the same source before deciding that one codec is “better.”

How to compare the three without fooling yourself

  1. Confirm the exact model and generation. Check that a listing says EAH-AZ80, WF-1000XM5 or MOMENTUM True Wireless 4, not a similarly named older model.
  2. Use the same source device. Keep the phone, music app, streaming quality and volume unchanged between auditions.
  3. Disable novelty effects for the first pass. Start with each earbud’s neutral or default profile before applying equalization or immersive modes.
  4. Match loudness. The louder option often sounds more impressive. Lower the louder pair until vocals and percussion seem equally loud.
  5. Test a seal before judging bass. Re-seat both earbuds and try the supplied sizes. A weak seal can make any model sound thin.
  6. Listen to several short, familiar passages. Use voice, acoustic instruments, bass, treble and a dense mix rather than one track.
  7. Repeat after a break. A second session reduces the effect of immediate novelty and memory.

Fit and seal: the variable no chart can settle

These are in-ear products, so fit is personal. The available evidence does not establish a particular ear-tip product or a universal fit result for any of the three models. The correct tip is the one that seals both ears comfortably without painful pressure or frequent loosening.

Signs of a good seal

  • Bass does not disappear when you move your jaw.
  • Outside sound is reduced consistently between left and right ears.
  • Vocals remain centered rather than drifting with small movements.
  • You can wear the earbuds for a normal listening session without a pressure hotspot.

Signs the fit is undermining sound

  • The same earbud sounds bright and bass-light compared with the other side.
  • You keep increasing volume to compensate for missing low frequencies.
  • The earbuds loosen during walking, chewing or talking.
  • One side needs repeated adjustment while the other stays put.

Try the manufacturer-supplied sizes methodically, clean the contact surfaces and insert each earbud with a gentle twist. Do not assume a third-party tip will improve sound; compatibility and results vary, and no specific replacement tip is established here as necessary.

Codecs and phone compatibility

A Bluetooth codec compresses and transmits audio between the source and earbuds. The source device and earbuds must both support the same codec, and the operating system may choose a different one when connection quality or settings change.

Codec detail established in the comparisons Relevant model What you need to verify
AAC and SBC Sony WF-1000XM5 Whether your phone and app use the expected codec; both are common fallback paths
LDAC Sony WF-1000XM5 Android/device support, Bluetooth developer or earbud settings, and a stable connection
aptX options Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 Which aptX variant your phone or computer supports and whether it is active
Codec information not established in the cited comparisons Technics EAH-AZ80 Check the current technical specification for your region and exact firmware

On an iPhone, do not buy the Sony solely for LDAC: Apple devices do not provide LDAC output. The practical choice is the tuning and fit you prefer over the codec name. On Android, confirm the codec in the phone’s Bluetooth details while music is playing; menus vary by manufacturer and operating-system version.

ANC, battery and other features: useful tie-breakers

Active noise cancellation and battery life matter, but they should not displace sound quality for this assignment. SoundGuys says its broader 2026 guide collected standardized measurements for frequency-response alignment, noise attenuation and battery life, and its sound roundup used blind testing with a B&K 5128 test head and reference headphones. Those methods help separate acoustic performance from marketing claims, but they do not establish that one model will fit or sound best for you.

Use ANC to protect your listening, not to define the tuning

ANC can let you listen at a lower volume in transport or an office. Compare each model with ANC off and on if you use both modes; processing can change the perceived balance. Treat ANC strength as a tie-breaker after you have selected a sound profile you enjoy.

Treat battery figures as conditions, not guarantees

Battery results depend on volume, codec, ANC mode, calls and temperature. The cited material does not provide a verified, model-by-model battery table for this shortlist, so do not use an unqualified runtime number to separate them. Check the manufacturer’s current specification and independent measurements for the exact mode you plan to use.

How to verify the “under $250” requirement

No reliable live US prices, retailer availability or Amazon listings are established for these models. Price can change by color, seller, refurbished condition, promotion and region. Perform this check immediately before purchase:

  1. Open at least one reputable US retailer and the manufacturer’s US product page.
  2. Confirm the model number, condition and warranty—not merely the product family name.
  3. Record the item price, shipping, sales tax estimate and any required membership fee.
  4. Exclude listings that are used, refurbished or imported if your requirement is a new US unit.
  5. Check the return window so you can test fit and sound safely.
  6. Recalculate the total against $250 on the day you order.

A temporary discount can make a model eligible today and ineligible tomorrow. State the observed price, seller and date if you publish a buying recommendation; otherwise describe the model as a candidate whose eligibility must be confirmed.

A decision framework for different listeners

Choose the Technics first when

You want the strongest available measurement-based starting point, are willing to audition its tuning and find a current US listing below your budget. Its reported response consistency makes it the sensible first comparison, not an automatic purchase.

Choose the Sony first when

You prefer its sound, your device can use LDAC, or the Sony fits your ears more securely. A better seal and a preferred tonal balance can matter more than the AZ80’s comparative response result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Sennheiser first when

You prefer its presentation or your source supports the aptX option you want. Select it because the complete listening experience suits you, not simply because a codec label appears on the box.

Keep shopping when

None of the three seals comfortably, you cannot verify a new US price below $250, or you dislike all three tonal balances after matched-volume listening. The “best” model that you will not wear is not the best purchase.

Setup steps after purchase

  1. Charge and update. Fully charge the case and earbuds, install the official companion app if required, and apply firmware updates before critical comparisons.
  2. Fit both ears. Try each supplied tip size, then run any in-app fit or seal check available for your model.
  3. Set a safe baseline. Start around a moderate volume with ANC off and the default equalizer.
  4. Confirm the connection path. In Bluetooth details, verify the active codec on devices that expose that information.
  5. Save a reference profile. After you decide on a preferred equalizer or ANC mode, keep a neutral preset for future comparisons.
  6. Test real use. Walk, talk and listen for at least one normal session before the return period ends.

Troubleshooting sound problems

Thin or weak bass

Reseat the earbuds and test a different supplied tip size before changing equalizer settings. If the problem follows one ear, check for blockage or debris and compare the left-right balance control. A poor seal is more likely than a missing high-end codec.

Harsh treble or sibilance

Lower volume, disable any treble-boosting preset and compare a familiar vocal recording. If the character persists across tracks, the model’s tuning may simply not suit you; return to the Sony, Sennheiser or Technics comparison rather than forcing an extreme equalizer curve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dropouts while using LDAC or aptX

Move the phone closer, remove competing Bluetooth connections and test a lower-quality or more stable codec mode. If stability improves, the higher-bandwidth mode is not practical in your environment. Codec availability and menu names vary by phone.

Uneven left and right volume

Clean the earbuds, check the source’s balance control and test another device. If only one earbud remains quiet after those checks, use the seller’s warranty or return process instead of compensating with a permanent balance shift.

What the available testing can—and cannot—tell you

RTINGS supplies the key comparative evidence for this shortlist: the AZ80’s response consistency advantage over the WF-1000XM5 and the MTW4-versus-Sony preference and codec discussion. SoundGuys describes blind listening with a B&K 5128 test head and reference headphones, plus standardized measurements for response alignment, noise attenuation and battery life in its broader 2026 guide, updated September 11, 2026. What Hi-Fi contributes the Sony’s favorable sound description and its AAC, SBC and LDAC listing.

Those sources do not provide a universal ranking, a named-person quotation, a verified current US price or a guarantee that any model fits your ears. They also do not establish a current seller or affiliate listing. Use the tests to narrow the audition, then verify price, codec support and comfort with your own device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final buying checklist

  • Is the exact model currently listed new in the US for less than $250 after relevant fees?
  • Does the earbud’s tuning suit your music at matched volume?
  • Can you achieve a stable, comfortable seal in both ears?
  • Does your phone support the codec you actually intend to use?
  • Have you compared ANC modes without mistaking noise reduction for better sound?
  • Is the return and warranty coverage adequate for a fit test?

If the answer to all six is yes, the Technics EAH-AZ80 is the logical first buy from this evidence set. If your ears, phone or musical taste point elsewhere, the Sony WF-1000XM5 and Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 are legitimate alternatives rather than consolation prizes.
