For most PS5 players, the best choice depends on the connection you need: choose PULSE Explore if you want true wireless earbuds, PULSE Elite if you prefer an over-ear headset with a boom microphone, or a third-party headset that explicitly includes a PS5-compatible USB wireless adapter. Standard Bluetooth earbuds and headphones do not pair directly with a PS5 for game audio.
This guide focuses on confirmed connection methods, microphone and phone-audio features, battery claims, portability, and practical setup. It does not present a universal tested winner: the available evidence is primarily Sony, PlayStation Direct, and manufacturer compatibility information rather than independent side-by-side measurements.
Quick verdict: which PS5 wireless option fits you?
| What you want | Best-fit option | Why it fits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact earbuds for PS5 or PlayStation Portal | PULSE Explore | PlayStation Link through the included USB adapter, three ear-tip sizes, dual microphones with AI-enhanced noise rejection, and simultaneous supported Bluetooth audio | Sony rates the earbuds for up to five hours per charge, with up to 10 additional hours from the case; comfort and fit remain personal |
| Over-ear design and a retractable boom mic | PULSE Elite | PlayStation Link, Bluetooth for a supported second device, quick charging, AI-enhanced noise rejection, and Sony’s stated 30-hour battery claim | No independent sound, comfort, durability, or microphone measurements are established here |
| Another maker’s features or a headset you already own | Confirmed PS5-compatible USB wireless headset | Many gaming headsets use a dedicated USB adapter for console audio and chat | Compatibility is model- and revision-specific; Bluetooth support for phones does not prove PS5 support |
| Reuse ordinary Bluetooth earbuds | Third-party Bluetooth adapter workaround | May allow a regular Bluetooth headset to connect | Sony does not guarantee compatibility or performance, including latency and other behavior |
| Wait for Sony’s next announced models | PlayStation Pulse or Pulse Edge | Both are planned to use PlayStation Link and support simultaneous connections to supported Bluetooth devices | As of October 13, 2026, Pulse was scheduled for select markets from holiday 2026 and Pulse Edge for early 2027; exact prices and dates were not supplied |
If you are buying today and want the least ambiguous path, start with a PlayStation Link product or a headset whose exact model page confirms PS5 operation through its USB adapter. Do not choose on the word “Bluetooth” alone.
How wireless audio actually works on PS5
Ordinary Bluetooth is not a direct PS5 audio connection
Sony’s UK support guidance is explicit: “First things first: pairing your Bluetooth headphones with the PS5 won’t be possible.” The console does not accept ordinary Bluetooth earbuds or headphones as a direct game-audio device. Sony cites potential latency and bandwidth problems. A pair of earbuds that connects normally to a phone therefore is not automatically a PS5 headset.

- 【Wide Compatibility with Gaming Devices】Setup the perfect entertainment system by plugging in 2.4G USB. The convenience of dual USB work seamlessly with your PS5,PS4, PC, Mac, Laptop, Switch and saves you from swapping cables.
This distinction explains many failed setups. A headset can advertise Bluetooth for a phone, tablet, or computer while using a completely different radio and protocol for PS5. Look for PlayStation Link or a console USB wireless adapter in the product’s PS5 specifications.
PlayStation Link
PlayStation describes PlayStation Link as “a technology that provides lossless, wireless connection.” PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite are PlayStation Link devices. With Explore, the PS5 connection is made through the included PlayStation Link USB adapter. Supported PlayStation Link products can also maintain a Bluetooth connection to a compatible phone at the same time, allowing console audio and supported phone audio to coexist.
PlayStation Link is not a universal Bluetooth converter. A PlayStation Link USB adapter is intended for compatible PS Link devices; plugging it into a console does not turn any generic Bluetooth headset into a PS Link headset.
USB wireless headsets from other manufacturers
Many gaming headsets use a USB transmitter or dongle. Sony’s support instructions tell you to insert the headset’s USB adapter into the PS5 and verify the model’s compatibility. Sony’s PS5 FAQ also says third-party support varies and recommends checking with the headset maker.
That verification matters for more than sound. A model may produce audio but lack supported microphone chat, sidetone, button controls, wireless range behavior, or another advertised feature on PS5. Check the exact model number, hardware revision, included adapter, firmware requirements, and regional product page before buying.
Wired and adapter-based alternatives
If wireless is not essential, Sony lists a 3.5 mm cable connected to the DualSense controller as an option when the headphones support that connection. It avoids wireless pairing and adapter uncertainty, although the cable reduces freedom of movement.

- Hear your Voice Level with Variable Mic Monitoring
- Low-Latency 2.4GHz Wireless plus Bluetooth 5.2 Connectivity
- Amplified 40mm Drivers for Powerful Spatial Audio
- QuickSwitch Button for Seamless Wireless to Bluetooth Switching
- Four Turtle Beach Audio EQ Modes
A third-party Bluetooth adapter is another possible workaround for regular Bluetooth headphones. Sony does not guarantee compatibility or performance for that route. Treat it as a way to reuse existing hardware, not as the simplest or most reliable recommendation for a new PS5 purchase.

Connection and supported devices
Sony lists PULSE Explore as compatible with PS5, PlayStation Portal, PC, Mac, and mobile devices. For PS5, use the supplied PlayStation Link USB adapter. The earbuds’ Bluetooth capability is useful for supported mobile devices and can operate simultaneously with PlayStation Link, but Bluetooth alone is not the PS5 game-audio path.
What Sony specifies
- Two microphones with AI-enhanced noise rejection.
- Three included ear-tip sizes for adjusting the seal.
- Up to five hours of battery life from the earbuds.
- Up to 10 additional hours through the charging case.
- A compact case designed for a pocket or bag.
The battery numbers are Sony’s “up to” claims, not independent measurements. Actual runtime can change with volume, microphone use, radio conditions, and other settings. The three tip sizes help with the starting fit, but official specifications cannot establish whether the earbuds will be comfortable for your ears during long sessions.
Who should choose Explore
Explore is the most direct answer for someone who specifically wants earbuds rather than a headband headset. It is also the natural fit for players who move between PS5 and PlayStation Portal or want a small case for travel. Simultaneous supported phone audio is useful if you need to monitor a phone connection while playing, but confirm that your intended phone and audio behavior are supported before relying on it.
Choose a different form factor if you need a retractable boom microphone, prefer the passive isolation of an over-ear headset, or dislike in-ear tips. Those are fit and usage decisions rather than claims about which product sounds better.

- Charge the earbuds and case.
- Insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into an available PS5 USB port.
- Remove the earbuds and follow the console’s pairing or output prompt. If the console does not switch automatically, use its current sound-output controls to select the connected PlayStation Link device.
- Make a short party-chat recording or voice check before a long session so you can confirm microphone pickup and positioning.
- Pair Bluetooth separately with your phone if you want the supported simultaneous connection; do not substitute that Bluetooth pairing for the USB PlayStation Link connection to PS5.
PULSE Elite: the current first-party over-ear option
Connection, microphone, and battery
PULSE Elite uses PlayStation Link for PS5 and also includes Bluetooth for a supported second device. Sony describes a retractable boom microphone with AI-enhanced noise rejection. PlayStation Direct lists a 30-hour battery figure and quick charging.
Rank #3
- Compatible with PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, PC & Mobile Devices Only
- Mappable Wheel and Mode Button for Customizable Functions
- QuickSwitch Button for Seamless Wireless to Bluetooth switching
- Flip-to-Mute Mic with A.I.-Based Noise Reduction
- Multiplatform, Low-latency 2.4GHz Wireless plus Bluetooth 5.2
The 30-hour number is a Sony-published claim, not an independently measured result. Runtime depends on use and settings, so treat it as a ceiling supplied by the manufacturer rather than a promise for every session.
Why an over-ear headset may be the better fit
Elite is aimed at players who want a conventional headset around both ears, physical boom-mic positioning, and less dependence on in-ear tips. The over-ear format can be preferable when you regularly use voice chat or want a headset that stays in place without an earbud seal.
Official pages in the available evidence do not establish measured sound quality, comfort, clamp force, long-term durability, or microphone superiority over Explore. Make those decisions from your own fit requirements and return policy rather than treating the battery or form factor as a sound-quality ranking.
Who should choose Elite
- Players who prefer over-ear headphones to earbuds.
- People who want a retractable boom microphone for party or team chat.
- Users who value Sony’s stated longer battery claim and quick charging.
- Anyone who wants PlayStation Link plus a supported second-device Bluetooth connection in a single headset.
Third-party wireless headsets with PS5 USB adapters
When this category makes sense
Choose a third-party model when you prefer another manufacturer’s microphone, active-noise-control approach, controls, ear-cup design, battery system, or existing ecosystem. It is also sensible if you already own a headset whose documentation confirms PS5 support through its supplied USB transmitter.
PlayStation Direct’s US listings identify third-party models such as the Razer BlackShark V3 Pro and Audeze Maxwell 2 as PS5-compatible. Those listings include vendor feature claims, including microphone or noise-control details for the Razer listing and a long battery-life claim for Maxwell 2. Treat those statements as retailer or manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative tests. The exact model, revision, regional listing, included adapter, and current availability must be checked at purchase time.
Compatibility checklist before buying
- PS5 is named explicitly: “Bluetooth compatible” by itself is insufficient.
- The correct transmitter is included: verify that the USB adapter shown in the package is for the advertised wireless mode.
- Chat is supported: confirm that the microphone and party-chat functions work on PS5, not only on PC.
- Features match the console: ANC, equalizer controls, sidetone, app settings, and button mappings may require a PC or mobile app and may not all operate on PS5.
- The model number is exact: similarly named generations can use different adapters or firmware.
- Firmware instructions are available: check whether an update is needed before first use.
Typical setup path
- Read the manufacturer’s PS5 instructions and identify the transmitter mode intended for console use.
- Connect that USB adapter directly to the PS5 rather than assuming a phone Bluetooth pairing will work.
- Power on the headset and wait for the adapter and headset indicators to show a connection.
- Confirm game audio and microphone input using the PS5’s sound controls or a short party-chat test.
- If audio works but chat does not, consult the exact model’s PS5 support page for a firmware update, mode switch, or microphone permission setting.
Do not infer universal support from one successful USB headset. Sony’s own guidance is to check the maker’s instructions for each model.

Upcoming PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge headsets
On September 15, 2026, PlayStation announced two additional models: the PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset and the Pulse Edge Wireless Headset. Sony says both use PlayStation Link and can connect simultaneously to supported Bluetooth devices. Both are described with AI-enhanced microphone noise rejection.
PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset
Sony said Pulse would launch in select markets starting in holiday 2026. The announcement did not provide a final price or exact launch date. As of October 13, 2026, it is an announced future product rather than a confirmed current purchase.
Pulse Edge Wireless Headset
Sony said Pulse Edge would launch in early 2027. The announced feature set adds active noise cancellation, a detachable boom microphone, a carrying case, a 3.5 mm jack, and game-audio/chat balance control. Exact pricing and dates were still pending on October 13, 2026.
These announcements are useful if you can wait, but they should not replace a current buying decision. Recheck launch timing, regional availability, firmware requirements, and final specifications after Sony publishes them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between earbuds and a headset
Fit and wearing comfort
Earbuds place the critical decision inside the ear: tip size, seal, pressure, and stability. Explore includes three tip sizes, but that does not guarantee a comfortable fit for every listener. An over-ear headset avoids an in-ear seal and offers a boom microphone, yet it adds a headband and ear-cup weight. If you play for several hours, choose the form factor you can wear without repeatedly adjusting it.
Microphone needs
Explore uses two built-in microphones with Sony’s AI-enhanced noise rejection. Elite adds a retractable boom microphone and the same stated AI-enhanced noise-rejection approach. A third-party headset may advertise ANC or a different microphone design, but verify that the feature applies on PS5 and not only through a companion PC application.

Phone audio and device switching
Supported PlayStation Link products can maintain a PS5 connection while also connecting to a supported Bluetooth device. This is different from using Bluetooth as the PS5 audio link. If you need calls, alerts, or music from a phone while playing, check the manufacturer’s instructions for simultaneous-device behavior and controls.
Battery and charging
Explore’s quoted endurance is split between the earbuds and charging case: up to five hours from the earbuds and up to 10 more from the case. Elite’s listed figure is up to 30 hours. These numbers come from Sony and PlayStation Direct, not an independent laboratory comparison. For third-party products, compare the exact manufacturer claim and whether it changes with ANC, microphone use, or a particular wireless mode.
Portability
Explore’s case is designed for a pocket or bag, making it the more travel-oriented choice. Over-ear headsets generally need more room, although some models fold or include a case. If you use PlayStation Portal away from home, account for the USB adapter and the charging case or headset itself when planning what to carry.

The PS5 does not detect the headset
- Remove and reinsert the USB adapter directly into the console.
- Confirm that you are using the adapter supplied for that headset or the official PlayStation Link adapter required by the product.
- Power-cycle the headset and check its pairing indicator.
- Try another PS5 USB port if available.
- Check the product’s support page for a firmware update or a console-mode switch.
Audio works but the microphone does not
- Confirm that the headset is not muted with its hardware button or boom position.
- Check the PS5’s selected input device and microphone level.
- Verify that the model’s PS5 documentation promises chat support, not just stereo playback.
- Update the headset and transmitter if the manufacturer provides PS5 firmware instructions.
The earbuds connect to a phone but not the PS5
That is expected when the earbuds are operating only in ordinary Bluetooth mode. Use the PlayStation Link USB adapter for PULSE Explore, or use the dedicated USB transmitter for a confirmed third-party headset. Phone pairing does not authorize a direct Bluetooth connection to PS5.
There is delay or unstable sound with an adapter
Sony does not guarantee third-party Bluetooth-adapter performance. Move the adapter away from obvious sources of interference, keep the headset charged, and confirm that the adapter supports the headset’s intended codec and mode. If latency or dropouts continue, a PlayStation Link device or a PS5-confirmed USB wireless headset is the more predictable solution.
Prices, availability, and what to verify at checkout
A comprehensive, current multi-retailer price and inventory comparison is not established here. Prices, stock, regional bundles, firmware, and product revisions can change. Treat any amount shown by a retailer as time- and region-specific rather than as a permanent reference price.
Before ordering, verify:
- The exact product name and model number.
- Whether the package includes the required PlayStation Link or USB wireless adapter.
- Explicit PS5 compatibility, including microphone chat if you need it.
- Regional availability and return terms, especially for in-ear products.
- The manufacturer’s current battery claim and charging requirements.
- Whether a future model is actually shipping rather than accepting a notification or preorder.
For a current purchase, PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite are the clearly documented first-party paths in this comparison. The announced Pulse and Pulse Edge should be treated as wait-and-see options until Sony publishes final dates, prices, and regional availability.

Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- Pick the form factor: earbuds for compactness and portability, over-ear for a boom mic and conventional headset fit.
- Confirm the wireless path: PlayStation Link or a model-specific USB adapter, not generic Bluetooth alone.
- Check chat support: make sure the microphone works on PS5.
- Match your device routine: verify simultaneous supported phone Bluetooth if you need it.
- Read battery figures correctly: “up to” numbers are manufacturer claims and may vary with settings.
- Check the exact listing: region, revision, included adapter, firmware, stock, and return policy all matter.
- Test the essentials immediately: game audio, microphone pickup, comfort, and any simultaneous-device behavior should be checked while a return is still possible.
