There is no single best wired headphone for every listener. Open-back models usually provide a more spacious presentation but leak sound and offer little isolation; closed-back models are more practical for shared rooms, recording, editing and travel. This guide focuses on wired over-ear headphones and matches each recommendation to a listening situation.

Quick recommendations

Best for Model Design Why it stands out
Shared rooms and less leakage Sennheiser HD 480 PRO Closed-back RTINGS’ current closed-back wired over-ear pick, with some passive isolation.
Quiet-room listening Sennheiser HD 560S Open-back Generally flat presentation and an open soundstage; limited low bass is noted by RTINGS.
Editing and monitoring clicks Sony MDR-7506 Closed-back Bright character can make clicks and pops easier to hear, with some passive isolation.
Detachable cable and professional use Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Closed-back A practical closed design with a detachable cable; reviewer conclusions about sound and comfort are subjective.

RTINGS said its guide was checked for stock and accuracy on September 4, 2026. On July 23, 2026, it replaced the Focal Azurys with the Sennheiser HD 480 PRO as its closed-back pick. Availability and recommendations can change, so verify the current listing before buying.

Choose open-back or closed-back first

Open-back: best for a quiet private room

Open-back ear cups allow more interaction with the room. The result can feel less enclosed and more speaker-like, but people nearby may hear your music and outside noise remains audible. The HD 560S is therefore better suited to a quiet room than an office, commute or recording booth. Its reported sound is generally flat, although RTINGS notes that low bass is somewhat limited.

Closed-back: best when isolation and privacy matter

Closed-back cups reduce outward leakage and provide some passive isolation. They are the safer choice for shared offices, late-night listening, tracking vocals, editing in a busy room or preventing your playback from reaching a microphone. Isolation is passive rather than active noise cancellation, so loud environmental sounds will not disappear completely. Closed designs can also sound less open than open-back alternatives; RTINGS specifically makes that distinction for the HD 480 PRO.

Model details and trade-offs

Sennheiser HD 480 PRO

RTINGS identifies the HD 480 PRO as its best closed-back wired over-ear option in the current guide. Its category fit is straightforward: choose it when leakage and some passive isolation matter more than an open, speaker-like presentation. The recommendation is a reviewer judgment, not a universal ranking for every genre, head shape or amplifier.

Sennheiser HD 560S

Sennheiser lists the HD 560S as an open dynamic over-ear headphone with 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm connectivity, a 6 Hz–38,000 Hz stated frequency response, 280 g weight and dimensions of 198 × 111 × 300 mm. The package includes a 1.8 m cable with a 3.5 mm plug and a 3.5-to-6.3 mm adapter, so connecting to a standard headphone jack or larger amplifier socket does not require an adapter purchase.

The manufacturer describes the model as a neutral reference design. Product manager Jermo Köhnke calls out accurate bass response, clarity above 10 kHz and a natural soundstage; acoustics team leader Kurt Mick attributes the design to a new 120-ohm transducer and a polymer-blend diaphragm. Those are manufacturer statements, not independent measurements or proof that every listener will hear the same result.

Sony MDR-7506

The MDR-7506 is a long-established studio-oriented closed headphone. Sony’s specification sheet lists dynamic closed construction, 40 mm drivers, a 10 Hz–20 kHz frequency response, 63 ohms impedance, 106 dB/W/m sensitivity, a 9.8 ft cord and an 8.1 oz weight. The box includes a protective pouch and a gold-plated 3.5 mm/6.3 mm Unimatch adapter.

  • Compatibility: Pro-10 wired headphones work exclusively in wired mode and are compatible with a wide range of devices, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, desktop computers, audio interfaces, DJ mixers, amplifiers, and any device that features either a 3.5mm or 6.35mm audio jack.
  • Share Audio Port: With a shared audio port, easily connect another pair to share music or videos—no splitters or special cables needed.

RTINGS says its brighter sound can help editors detect clicks and pops, while the closed construction supplies some passive isolation. The long fixed cable is useful at a workstation but less convenient for portable use than a detachable cable.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50x

RTINGS characterizes the ATH-M50x as a closed-back headphone for audiophile and professional use and notes its detachable cable. That makes replacement or alternate-length cables practical. In RTINGS’ comparison, the ATH-M50x is the more leakage-conscious tool, while the open HD 560S performs better on the publication’s reported PRTF comparison. Sound and comfort impressions remain reviewer judgments rather than guarantees.

How to choose for your room and source

  1. Identify who can hear the headphones. Select open-back only when leakage is harmless and the room is quiet. Otherwise start with a closed-back model.
  2. Set your listening priority. Choose the HD 560S for an open presentation and generally flat balance; the HD 480 PRO or ATH-M50x when isolation and reduced leakage matter; or the MDR-7506 when editing detail such as clicks and pops is central.
  3. Check fit and comfort. Headband pressure, ear-cup depth, clamp and heat matter more over long sessions than a specification-sheet frequency range. If possible, confirm the retailer’s return policy.
  4. Match the plug and cable. Confirm whether your device accepts 3.5 mm, 6.3 mm or needs a suitable adapter. The HD 560S and MDR-7506 include adapters; the ATH-M50x’s detachable cable simplifies replacement.
  5. Confirm your equipment can drive the load. The MDR-7506 is rated at 63 ohms and the HD 560S uses a 120-ohm transducer. Many computers and interfaces can produce useful volume, but maximum loudness and headroom vary by source.
  6. Check current stock and model variant. Wired headphones often have regional bundles or revised listings. Verify the exact model, included cable and return terms before ordering.

What the specifications do—and do not—tell you

  • Frequency response: A stated range such as 6 Hz–38,000 Hz describes the manufacturer’s specification, not a guarantee of equal loudness or preferred tonality.
  • Impedance and sensitivity: These help indicate source compatibility, but they do not by themselves predict sound quality.
  • Weight: The HD 560S is listed at 280 g; Sony lists the MDR-7506 at 8.1 oz. Perceived comfort also depends on clamp, padding and fit.
  • Cable design: Detachable cables can be replaced or changed in length. A fixed 9.8 ft cable, as on the MDR-7506 specification sheet, favors desk use over mobile carrying.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the Sennheiser HD 480 PRO if you need a current closed-back recommendation for shared spaces. Choose the Sennheiser HD 560S for private, quiet listening where an open presentation is desirable. Pick the Sony MDR-7506 for a proven closed studio tool and long cable, especially when bright detail helps editing. Choose the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x when a detachable cable and closed professional format are priorities. Your room, fit and preferred tonal balance should decide the final choice rather than any universal “best” label.
