The best wired earbuds for everyday listening are the ones that fit your device, stay comfortable for hours and suit how you listen. Check the connector before judging sound: the examples covered here use 3.5 mm plugs, while many current phones and tablets have only USB-C. A compatible USB-C model or a properly supported adapter may be necessary.
For a straightforward, inexpensive 3.5 mm pair with an inline microphone, the Sony MDR-EX15AP is a sensible backup choice. The Panasonic RP-HJE120 ErgoFit is another basic option when supplied ear-tip sizes and a short cable matter. Neither specification sheet, however, proves superior sound; independent listening assessments and your own fit matter more.
Start with connector compatibility
A good-sounding earbud is useless if it cannot connect to your device. Identify the socket on the phone, tablet, laptop, handheld game system or audio player you use most.

A standard 3.5 mm headphone jack accepts conventional wired earbuds. The Sony MDR-EX15AP uses a gold-plated, L-shaped, four-conductor stereo mini plug. The Panasonic RP-HJE120 is described as having a standard 3.5 mm jack. A four-conductor plug can carry stereo audio plus microphone and control signals, but the device still needs to support the relevant headset wiring.

USB-C devices
Some newer phones and tablets have removed the analog headphone jack. You can use native USB-C earbuds or a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter with your existing earbuds. Compatibility is not automatic: an adapter may need its own digital audio converter, and microphone or button support can vary by device and adapter. Confirm support for your exact model before buying.
Wireless-only equipment
The Panasonic RP-HJE120 will not work with equipment that requires Bluetooth audio, and wired earbuds cannot pair wirelessly. If a device has no usable 3.5 mm or USB-C audio path, you need a compatible adapter or a different type of headset.
How the leading options compare
The table separates manufacturer specifications from TechRadar’s independent product assessment. Frequency range, driver size and impedance describe construction; they do not establish that one model sounds better than another.

Choose the fit before chasing sound
In-ear earbuds seal the entrance to the ear canal. That seal affects bass, perceived detail, stability and passive isolation, so a model that sounds excellent in one person’s ears may sound thin or uncomfortable in another’s.
Use the right ear tip
- Start with the medium tip and insert the earbud gently without forcing it deep into the canal.
- If outside sound leaks in or bass seems weak, try the larger tip.
- If the earbud feels pressurized, painful or unstable, try the smaller tip or a shallower position.
- Use the same size only if your ears need it; left and right ears can require different tips.
The RP-HJE120 includes small, medium and large earpads. Sony also lists S/M/L tips for the MDR-EX15AP. Multiple sizes are especially useful when earbuds will be worn for long podcast sessions or commuting.
Comfort checks for daily wear
- Wear the earbuds for at least 15 minutes before deciding. Pressure that seems minor at first can become distracting.
- Check that the cable exits without pulling the shell sideways.
- Walk, turn your head and look down. A stable seal should not require constant readjustment.
- Stop using any tip that causes pain, itching or a blocked sensation that does not quickly clear.
Match the sound to what you listen to
Everyday listening usually includes several formats, so prioritize a balanced presentation unless you know you want a specific emphasis. Bass-heavy tuning can make pop and electronic music lively but may obscure speech or acoustic instruments. A brighter presentation can reveal consonants and guitar attack yet become tiring at high volume.
What specifications can and cannot tell you
Sony states a 9 mm dynamic driver, 16-ohm impedance and an 8–22,000 Hz response for the MDR-EX15AP. Those are useful compatibility and design details, not a sound-quality score. Frequency-response numbers do not show how evenly a driver performs across that range, and driver diameter alone does not predict tonal balance, distortion or comfort.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

TechRadar says its review team evaluates sound quality, comfort, cable design, cable noise and noise isolation, and reports having tested more than 700 pairs of headphones since the publication launched. That is an outlet-reported testing count, not a market statistic or a guarantee that a particular model will suit your ears.
Music, speech and games
- Music: prioritize a secure seal and a tonal balance you enjoy; a poor fit can remove bass regardless of the driver.
- Podcasts and audiobooks: clear midrange and comfortable tips matter more than extreme bass extension.
- Calls: place the microphone where clothing will not rub against it, and verify that your device recognizes the headset microphone.
- Games: low-latency wired transmission is useful, but channel balance and positional clarity still depend on the earbud and source.
Inline microphones and controls
The MDR-EX15AP has an inline microphone and multifunction button according to Sony. A button may answer or end calls, pause playback or trigger another command, but the exact behavior depends on the operating system, app and headset wiring. Do not assume every button works identically on every phone or laptop.
Test a headset before relying on it for calls
- Connect the earbuds fully and select them as the input and output device in your call app.
- Make a short recording and listen for a clear voice without crackle or intermittent audio.
- Place the microphone near your mouth, then move the cable against your shirt to check for rubbing noise.
- Press the multifunction button during playback and a test call to confirm the commands your device accepts.
If music works but the microphone does not, the adapter, plug standard or operating-system permissions are more likely suspects than the earbud driver.
Understand cable handling and microphonics
A wired connection avoids charging and Bluetooth pairing, but the cable can catch on clothing, pull an earbud loose or transmit tapping sounds. TechRadar notes that cable noise can be more noticeable with in-ear headphones while walking.
Ways to reduce cable noise
- Route the cable under a shirt collar or use the supplied clothing clip if one is included.
- Keep the player in a stable pocket rather than letting it swing.
- Use a loose over-under coil for storage; tight knots create sharp bends that can damage the conductor.
- Unplug by gripping the plug housing, not the cable.
- For desk use, leave enough slack that turning your head does not tug the earbuds.
The Sony cord is listed as a 3.94-foot Y-type design, while Panasonic lists a 3.6-foot cable. The shorter cable may feel tidier at a desk; the practical choice depends on where you carry the source device and how much slack you need.
Isolation, leakage and noisy environments
Most wired earbuds in this class provide passive isolation: the ear tip physically reduces outside sound. Isolation varies with tip size, insertion depth and ear shape. It is not active noise cancellation (ANC), which uses microphones and electronic processing.
When passive isolation is enough
A good seal can reduce everyday office hum, nearby conversation and some transit noise without batteries or software. It also helps you hear detail at a lower volume. Because isolation is fit-dependent, changing tips can make a larger difference than changing specifications.

When to avoid a strong seal
Do not block both ears when you need to hear traffic, alarms, coworkers or other safety signals. For walking outdoors, keep volume modest and consider removing one earbud where appropriate. Wired earbuds do not provide a transparency mode unless a particular electronic model explicitly includes one.
Pick by everyday use case
Desk listening and study
Choose the most comfortable tip and a cable long enough to reach your computer without tension. An inline microphone is useful for occasional calls, but check that your computer’s combo headset jack supports it.
Commuting
Prioritize a stable seal, manageable cable and enough passive isolation for your route. Cable rubbing can be more noticeable while walking, so clothing routing matters. Do not mistake a sealed fit for ANC.
Calls on a phone or tablet
Start with connector and microphone compatibility. The MDR-EX15AP is a documented 3.5 mm headset option with an inline mic and button, but Sony’s compatibility language is for devices with a suitable headset jack rather than every adapter combination.
Backup or occasional use
A low-cost 3.5 mm pair makes sense as an emergency spare for a laptop, controller or older phone. TechRadar positions the MDR-EX15AP in this role, not as an upgrade chosen primarily for music quality.
Buying checklist
- Identify the port: 3.5 mm, USB-C or neither.
- Confirm headset support: especially microphone and button functions through any adapter.
- Check included tips: S/M/L options improve the odds of a reliable seal.
- Set your use case: music, speech, calls, desk work, walking or commuting.
- Consider cable length: compare the listed 3.94-foot Sony cord and 3.6-foot Panasonic cord with where you keep your device.
- Decide on isolation: passive sealing is useful, but it is not ANC and may be unsuitable where environmental awareness is essential.
- Check returns and current availability: prices, stock and review rankings change over time.
Troubleshoot common problems
No sound
- Push the plug or USB-C connector fully into the port.
- Confirm the device’s output is set to wired headphones rather than its speaker or another Bluetooth device.
- Try the earbuds with a second compatible device.
- If using USB-C, verify that the port supports digital audio and that the adapter is an audio model.
Sound in only one ear
- Inspect the plug and socket for debris, then reconnect.
- Move the cable gently near the plug and inline control. Crackling that changes with movement suggests cable damage.
- Test another source to separate an earbud fault from a device or adapter fault.
Weak bass or tinny sound
- Try another ear-tip size and reseat both earbuds.
- Check that the plug is fully inserted; a partially connected four-conductor plug can produce abnormal channels.
- Clean the acoustic openings carefully according to the manufacturer’s guidance.
Microphone or button fails
- Confirm the device recognizes a headset input.
- Check app microphone permission and input selection.
- Remove the adapter and test a direct compatible connection, or test a known-compatible adapter.
- Remember that button commands are device- and app-dependent.
Which earbuds should you buy?
Choose the Sony MDR-EX15AP when you need an inexpensive, searchable 3.5 mm backup with documented S/M/L tips, an inline microphone and multifunction button. Its four-conductor plug is intended for compatible headset jacks, not guaranteed universal operation, and TechRadar does not present it as the publication’s leading music-quality choice.
Choose the Panasonic RP-HJE120 ErgoFit when a basic 3.5 mm connection and included small, medium and large earpads are your priorities. Confirm the current US price and stock before ordering, and do not buy it for a Bluetooth-only device.
Choose a USB-C earbud or a tested USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter when your device lacks a headphone jack. Verify audio, microphone and control support for the exact phone, tablet or computer; connector shape alone is not enough.
For most people, the buying order is simple: make the connector work, obtain a comfortable seal, confirm call controls if needed, then judge sound and cable behavior. That sequence prevents paying for features you cannot use and makes everyday listening more reliable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are wired earbuds better than wireless earbuds for everyday listening?
They avoid charging and Bluetooth pairing and can offer dependable low-latency playback, but they require a compatible port and involve cable handling. The better choice depends on your device and routine.
Will a 3.5 mm USB-C adapter always support the microphone?
No. Adapter designs and device support differ. Confirm headset-microphone compatibility for the specific adapter and device rather than assuming that stereo audio support includes the mic.
Do the Sony MDR-EX15AP specifications guarantee good sound?
No. The listed driver size, impedance and frequency response describe the product’s design. They do not predict tonal balance or prove that it will sound better than another earbud.
Can wired earbuds provide active noise cancellation?
Some specialized wired models may include electronics for ANC, but a conventional passive pair does not. Fit-based isolation and ANC are different technologies.
