The best Windows settings for a handheld gaming PC depend on whether you are playing on battery, plugged in, using a controller from the sofa, or trying to reduce latency in a particular game. Start with Balanced or Best power efficiency when unplugged, switch to Best performance only when extra power use and heat are acceptable, and treat features such as windowed-game optimization, Xbox mode, Auto SR, and HDR as conditional options rather than universal upgrades.
Windows 11 settings interact with the handheld maker’s own power and thermal controls. A setting that is useful on one model can be unavailable or behave differently on another. The guide below gives the documented Windows choices, their limits, and a practical way to select them without promising a fixed battery-life, frame-rate, or temperature gain.
Choose a profile before changing anything
There is no single best configuration for every handheld. Decide which constraint matters most for the session, then change only the settings that address it.

Apply one change at a time when diagnosing a problem. That makes it possible to identify whether a missing option, visual change, heat increase, or game regression came from Windows or from the handheld’s own control utility.

Set power mode for the way you are playing
Use Best power efficiency or Balanced on battery
Open Settings > System > Power & battery and inspect Power mode. Windows 11 exposes Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance, although the choices shown can vary with the hardware and manufacturer.
Best power efficiency is the conservative choice for an unplugged session. Microsoft describes it as limiting background activity, so it is most useful when you are not trying to extract every possible frame from the system. Balanced is the sensible default when you want a compromise between responsiveness and runtime, especially for games whose frame rate is already stable.
Neither option guarantees a particular number of extra minutes. Display brightness, refresh behavior, game workload, wireless radios, background applications, firmware, and the handheld’s own wattage profile all affect the result. Treat the mode as a direction for Windows’ power policy, not as a measured battery-life promise.
Reserve Best performance for a deliberate trade-off
Best performance tells Windows to prioritize performance. It is appropriate when the device is connected to power, when a demanding game is not holding its target frame rate, or when you have decided that higher consumption and a warmer chassis are acceptable. Microsoft explicitly warns that this mode uses more power and can make a laptop warmer; the same trade-off matters on a handheld because the battery and cooling system are physically close to your hands.
Before selecting it for an unplugged session, consider whether the game actually benefits. A lightweight title, an emulator with a capped frame rate, or a game already limited by its own settings may gain little while still drawing more power. If the handheld’s control application also has a performance or thermal profile, avoid assuming that the Windows selection overrides it. The two layers can interact, and the exact behavior is model-specific.
Check Energy Saver and efficiency recommendations
The same Power & battery area includes Energy Saver, brightness controls, screen-off and sleep timers, and Windows efficiency recommendations. Enable or review them according to the session rather than copying a fixed recipe. A short screen-off timer can prevent wasted charge when you pause, while an aggressive timer may interrupt a game or download.

The recommendations displayed by Windows depend on device capabilities and whether the handheld is plugged in. Read each recommendation before applying it. A recommendation that limits background activity may be useful on battery but unnecessary while installing a game on external power. Check the page again after a major Windows update or a change in docked or undocked use because the available controls can change.

Optimize compatible windowed and borderless games
Know exactly which games are covered
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in a window or in borderless-window mode. It is not a blanket optimization for every API, every fullscreen mode, or every handheld.
For a compatible title, Microsoft says the feature moves presentation to a newer model. That can reduce frame latency and make features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate available when the game and display support them. The feature does not establish a guaranteed frame-rate increase, and it cannot add variable refresh to a panel that does not support it.
Enable it and restart the game
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the control for Optimizations for windowed games and turn it on.
- Close and restart the game. The change is not reliably applied to a title that was already running.
If a particular game becomes less stable, shows visual corruption, or feels worse, return to the Graphics page and use the per-app adjustment for that title. A per-game exception is preferable to disabling the feature globally when other compatible games work correctly.
Make controller-first use optional with Xbox mode
Check the requirements first
Microsoft documents Xbox mode for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, in supported markets. The handheld must also have an installed supported gaming home app that Windows can offer in the Xbox mode settings. Availability is therefore conditional on the Windows version, region, device, and installed software.

- Open Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode.
- Select an installed supported gaming home app when Windows presents the choice.
- Decide whether to enable startup into that full-screen experience. Startup is optional.
- Launch the mode and test navigation with the built-in controls before relying on it for a travel or living-room session.
Microsoft says enabling startup can limit background processes while gaming. That may make a controller-first interface feel cleaner, but it is not a universal performance fix and should not be treated as one. The full-screen environment can also make some applications behave differently. Keep ordinary Windows desktop access available when you need launchers, utilities, file management, accessibility tools, or troubleshooting windows that are not designed for the full-screen experience.

When to leave Xbox mode off
Leave startup disabled if you regularly switch between several launchers, use desktop applications, or need to inspect Windows settings before launching a game. You can still use the handheld’s controls and a supported home app without making the full-screen environment the default. If Xbox mode is missing, first verify that Windows reports version 24H2 or later and that you are in a supported market; a missing control is not evidence that another setting is broken.
Use Auto SR only when the hardware and game qualify
Automatic Super Resolution is not a general setting for Windows handhelds. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance identifies eligible Copilot+ PCs and the ROG Xbox Ally X, along with device and game requirements. A handheld can run Windows 11 and still lack the feature.
Check the device’s current Windows and manufacturer documentation before looking for the switch. If the option is absent, do not try to force it through registry edits or third-party utilities. If it is present, verify the game’s compatibility and follow the game’s own resolution or upscaling requirements. Auto SR should be evaluated as an optional rendering feature for an eligible combination, not as a universal way to improve every game’s image or frame rate.

Confirm the display is HDR-capable
HDR only makes sense when the handheld’s display supports HDR. If it does, Windows provides an option to allow HDR games and apps on battery. The wording and placement can vary with the display and Windows build, so look in the display’s HDR controls rather than assuming every handheld exposes the same toggle.
Choose visual quality or longer unplugged runtime
HDR can reduce battery life while gaming unplugged. Enable HDR on battery when high-dynamic-range presentation is important to you and the shorter runtime is acceptable; disable the battery allowance when preserving charge is the priority. This is a visual-quality decision, not a performance setting. HDR support also depends on the game, so a display that can show HDR does not make every title an HDR title.
When troubleshooting washed-out colors, unexpected brightness, or a sudden change in runtime, test the game once with HDR disabled and once with it enabled under the same power mode. Keep the setting that matches your display and the way you actually play instead of leaving it on by default.

Reduce avoidable background work without debloating Windows
Review startup and background apps
Microsoft’s general performance guidance recommends reviewing startup and background apps. On a handheld, close or disable only applications you recognize and do not need while gaming: for example, a synchronizer, updater, or launcher that is not part of the current session. Keep input, graphics, security, accessibility, and manufacturer-control components unless you know exactly what they do.
Make changes in small groups and restart before judging the result. A startup item may provide overlays, controller mapping, cloud saves, or firmware notifications. Removing it can appear to improve idle activity while quietly removing a function you still need.
Do not blanket-disable services
The documented guidance does not support disabling Windows services wholesale or installing a third-party debloat tool as a generic handheld optimization. Such changes can break updates, security features, input, networking, sleep, or the manufacturer’s control layer. If a background process is using resources, identify the application, confirm that you do not need it for the current session, and use its own settings or Windows’ startup controls rather than deleting system components.
Account for the handheld maker’s control application
Windows power mode is only one layer. Handheld manufacturers commonly provide their own control application with power, thermal, fan, display, or frame-limit profiles. The collected Windows documentation does not establish model-by-model recommendations for those tools, and the same label can have different wattage or fan behavior on different devices.
Use the maker’s profile deliberately:
- Record which profile is active before changing Windows power mode.
- Avoid switching several power and thermal controls simultaneously when diagnosing a problem.
- Watch for a profile that resets after sleep, reboot, docking, or a firmware update.
- Use the manufacturer’s documented defaults as the recovery point if a custom profile causes instability.
If a Windows setting appears ineffective, check whether the control application is applying a more restrictive or more aggressive policy. Conversely, a Windows change that looks harmless can still increase fan noise or heat if the device profile allows the extra power.

Practical setup recipes
Recipe: an unplugged travel session
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery and choose Best power efficiency or Balanced.
- Review Energy Saver, brightness, screen-off, and sleep timers for the length of the session.
- Leave Best performance off unless the game genuinely needs it and you accept the battery and heat cost.
- Allow HDR games and apps on battery only if HDR is important and the display supports it.
- Close recognized startup or background apps that are not needed for the game.
- Keep the manufacturer’s thermal profile consistent while testing so that you can tell which change affected the session.
Recipe: a plugged-in demanding game
- Connect reliable power and confirm the handheld is not merely connected to a charger that cannot sustain the selected profile.
- Choose Best performance in Settings > System > Power & battery if the extra power and warmth are acceptable.
- Use the device maker’s performance or thermal profile only after checking how it interacts with Windows mode.
- For a DirectX 10 or 11 game running windowed or borderless, test Optimizations for windowed games and restart the title.
- Keep HDR and Auto SR decisions separate from the power decision; each has its own display or hardware requirements.
Recipe: a controller-first couch session
- Confirm Windows 11 is version 24H2 or later and that your market supports Xbox mode.
- Install a supported gaming home app, then open Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode.
- Select the home app and enable startup only if you want the full-screen environment every time.
- Test launching, closing, and returning to Windows before putting the handheld into a dock or television setup.
- Disable startup again if desktop utilities or alternate launchers become difficult to reach.
Troubleshoot by symptom
A setting is missing
Check the Windows edition and version, the display’s capabilities, the device’s hardware, the market where the device is being used, and whether the manufacturer has replaced or hidden a control in its own application. Xbox mode requires Windows 11 24H2 or later and a supported market; Auto SR requires eligible hardware and games; windowed-game optimization requires a compatible DirectX 10 or 11 windowed or borderless title; HDR requires an HDR-capable display.

The game feels worse after enabling windowed optimization
Close and relaunch the game first. If the problem remains, use the per-app adjustment in Settings > System > Display > Graphics for that title. Keep the global feature enabled for other compatible games if they do not show the same behavior.
The handheld is hotter or loses charge faster
Check whether Best performance, HDR on battery, or the manufacturer’s performance profile is active. Return to Balanced or Best power efficiency, review Energy Saver and background apps, and compare behavior under the same game and brightness conditions. No documented setting in this guide guarantees a fixed temperature or runtime, so use your own normal session as the comparison.
Xbox mode changes how an app behaves
Return to the ordinary Windows desktop for applications that are not designed for the full-screen environment. Disable automatic startup while keeping the mode available on demand if you need both controller-first gaming and unrestricted desktop access.
Auto SR or HDR does not appear in a game
Recheck eligibility rather than assuming Windows is malfunctioning. Auto SR is restricted to specified Copilot+ hardware or the ROG Xbox Ally X and supported games. HDR requires a capable display and game support, and allowing HDR on battery is a separate battery-use choice.
A safe order for changing settings
Change the setting that matches your immediate goal, then test one representative game for a complete launch, play, suspend, and resume cycle. If the result is worse, undo the last change before touching another layer. This order keeps troubleshooting manageable:
- Set Windows Power mode for battery or plugged-in use.
- Check brightness, Energy Saver, and timers.
- Review recognized startup and background apps.
- Test windowed-game optimization only for a compatible title.
- Configure Xbox mode only when its version, market, and app requirements are met.
- Evaluate HDR and Auto SR separately, using the display and hardware requirements as the gate.
- Finally, compare the Windows result with the handheld maker’s own profile.
The practical rule is simple: use efficiency or Balanced for unplugged play, Best performance when power and heat are acceptable, and enable specialized gaming features only when their documented conditions match your device, display, Windows version, and game.
