The most effective battery-saving setup for a Windows 2-in-1 is to select Best power efficiency, turn on Energy saver, reduce brightness, use a shorter screen-off and sleep timer, lower or dynamically vary the refresh rate, assign ordinary apps to Power saving graphics, restrict unnecessary background activity, and keep HDR off on battery unless you specifically need it. Use Sleep for a short pause and Hibernate for a longer break when Hibernate is available.
There is no universal number of extra hours or percentage gain. Battery capacity, processor, display panel, firmware, Windows release, connected devices, and workload determine the result. The settings below reduce the biggest avoidable drains while preserving a practical touch, pen, tablet, and laptop experience.
Set the highest-impact options first
Apply these changes while the 2-in-1 is unplugged, then adjust individual settings when a task needs more speed, brightness, smoothness, or color accuracy.
| Priority | Setting | Battery-oriented choice | What you trade away |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Power mode | Best power efficiency | Lower peak responsiveness and performance |
| 2 | Energy saver | On now or triggered at a chosen battery level | Windows may reduce activity and brightness |
| 3 | Brightness | Lowest comfortable level | A dimmer image, especially outdoors |
| 4 | Screen and sleep timers | Short on-battery timeouts | More frequent wake-ups |
| 5 | Refresh rate | Lower rate or Dynamic refresh rate | Less fluid scrolling and inking at times |
| 6 | Graphics | Power saving for ordinary apps | Lower graphics performance in those apps |
| 7 | HDR | Do not allow HDR games and apps on battery | Less highlight and color impact in HDR content |
| 8 | Idle state | Sleep for short breaks; Hibernate for long ones | Hibernate resumes more slowly and may be unavailable |
Start at the top rather than changing every option at once. That makes it easier to identify which compromise affects your work or comfort.

1. Choose Best power efficiency on battery
Windows 11 path
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Find Power mode.
- Choose Best power efficiency for unplugged use.
Windows normally offers Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance. Best power efficiency is the correct starting point when runtime matters more than maximum responsiveness. Balanced is the practical fallback when you regularly switch between battery work and demanding tasks; Best performance is appropriate when rendering, gaming, compiling, or using another workload that needs sustained speed.
If the Power mode selector is missing or blocked
Availability depends on the PC’s hardware and manufacturer. A custom power plan can also prevent the selector from working. Microsoft advises opening Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options and selecting Balanced first. Return to Settings afterward and check whether the Power mode choices are available.
Do not interpret Best power efficiency as a fixed battery-saving percentage. Windows changes power behavior according to the platform, and the actual result depends on what the processor, display, storage, radios, and applications are doing.

2. Turn on Energy saver and set its trigger
Enable it immediately
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Turn on Energy saver.
- If Windows presents an automatic option, choose the battery level at which Energy saver should activate.
Energy saver manages system processes and power use automatically. Windows 11 can also lower screen brightness while it is active, so the feature complements rather than replaces the brightness setting.
Choose a trigger that matches your work
A higher trigger gives you more protection against an unexpectedly low battery, while a lower trigger leaves normal performance available for longer. If you spend most of a day away from an outlet, use a trigger early enough to protect the final part of the session. If you need full responsiveness for a presentation or pen-heavy meeting, turn Energy saver on manually after that work instead of allowing it to change the display during it.
Energy saver is broader than the Power mode selector: Power mode sets the general performance preference, while Energy saver automatically applies several reductions when active. Using both is reasonable when maximum runtime is the priority.
3. Shorten screen-off and sleep timers
Set separate on-battery timeouts
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Screen and sleep. On some newer Windows 11 builds, the heading is Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts.
- Choose shorter values for the On battery power options that turn off the screen and put the device to sleep.
Microsoft’s energy recommendations commonly offer three- or 10-minute choices, although the available choices vary by system. Set the screen to turn off first and sleep soon afterward. This prevents an unattended bright panel from consuming power while still giving you a brief window to return without a full resume.

Pick a timer for the way you use a 2-in-1
- Desk work: A short screen timeout is usually safe because the keyboard, mouse, or touchpad wakes the display quickly.
- Reading or recipes in tablet mode: Use a longer screen timeout if you are looking at a page without touching it, but keep the sleep timer shorter than the plugged-in value.
- Presentations: Temporarily extend the timeout so the screen does not go dark between slides, then restore the battery value afterward.
Timeouts save energy by eliminating idle consumption; they do not make an active video call, document session, or streaming task more efficient.
4. Lower brightness and use adaptive controls when available
Find a comfortable minimum
Lower the built-in display brightness until text remains easy to read in the room where you are working. Brightness is one of the display controls most directly tied to everyday consumption, so a small reduction maintained for hours is often more useful than an aggressive setting that causes eye strain and gets raised again.
Use adaptive or content-adaptive brightness selectively
Where supported, adaptive brightness can respond to ambient light, and content-adaptive brightness can respond to what is displayed. These options may be absent on some 2-in-1s and generally do not control every external display. A panel, firmware, or manufacturer utility can determine whether the control appears.
Adaptive behavior is useful when you move between a bright room and a dim one. If it repeatedly changes brightness while you draw or edit color-sensitive work, use a fixed comfortable level instead. On battery, avoid pairing a high manual brightness with HDR unless the visual result is essential.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches5. Reduce refresh-rate power draw
Choose a lower fixed rate
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Open the refresh-rate menu for the built-in panel.
- Select a lower available rate when battery life is more important than the smoothest motion.
Higher refresh rates use more power. The difference is most noticeable on a bright, high-refresh touch panel that is active for long periods. A lower rate can be a sensible default for writing, browsing, and video playback, while a higher rate may be worth restoring for fast scrolling, pen work, or games.
Prefer Dynamic refresh rate when offered
Dynamic refresh rate allows Windows to vary the rate instead of holding the panel at its maximum continuously. Select it in the same Advanced display menu if the display and Windows edition offer it. If Dynamic refresh rate is not listed, the hardware or driver may not support it; lowering the fixed rate is the available alternative.
Touch and pen input still work at a lower rate, but the pointer or ink may look less fluid. Treat this as a task-based choice rather than a permanent rule.

6. Assign ordinary apps to Power saving graphics
Set an app-specific preference
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the application you want to change. Add it if Windows lists it as a desktop app that is not already shown.
- Open the app’s Options.
- Choose Power saving, then save the preference.
Use Power saving for browsers, note-taking tools, office applications, messaging software, and other programs that do not need a discrete or high-performance GPU. Keep a higher-performance option for games, 3D work, video creation, computer-aided design, or another workload that visibly benefits from it.
Why per-app graphics is safer than forcing everything to save power
A global low-power choice can make creative or interactive software sluggish. Per-app assignment lets a 2-in-1 remain efficient during ordinary work while preserving performance for the few applications that need it. If an application behaves unexpectedly after changing its preference, return to its Graphics options and choose the previous or higher-performance setting.
7. Reduce secondary background and radio drain
Limit background activity
Some apps expose controls for running or refreshing in the background. Limit that activity for apps that do not need immediate updates, particularly when you are away from a charger. Leave background access enabled for software that must receive alerts, synchronize work, or support a live meeting.
Turn off radios you are not using
Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when they are not needed. This is useful on a flight, during offline reading, or when a paired accessory is no longer in use. Do not disable Wi-Fi during a call or collaboration session merely to save a small amount of power; a dropped connection costs more time than it saves.
Use Dark mode and a dark background as secondary measures
Dark mode and a dark background are low-effort optimizations. Their effect depends on the panel technology, the applications you use, and how much of the screen is bright. They should follow brightness, refresh rate, and timeout changes rather than replace them.
8. Keep HDR off on battery unless it is a deliberate priority
Use Windows’ battery HDR control
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the HDR-capable display.
- Open Windows HD Color settings.
- Leave Don’t allow HDR games and apps on battery enabled unless you specifically need HDR while unplugged.
Microsoft warns that playing HDR content on a laptop battery can reduce battery life. HDR can also make a panel run brighter, so it is a targeted trade-off: disabling it preserves runtime, while enabling it may be worthwhile for HDR video, games, or color-critical work.
Handle external displays separately
The HDR control is tied to the selected HDR-capable display. External monitors can expose different options, and adaptive-brightness controls may not apply to them. Check the display selected at the top of the Display settings page before changing the battery HDR preference.

9. Choose Sleep or Hibernate for idle periods
Use Sleep for a short break
Microsoft describes Sleep this way: “Sleep uses very little power, your PC starts up faster, and you’re instantly back to where you left off.” It is the convenient choice for a coffee break, a short meeting, or moving between rooms. The 2-in-1 remains in a low-power state and resumes quickly.
Use Hibernate for a longer absence
Hibernate uses less power than Sleep and is better for a longer period away from charging, such as overnight travel or a full day in a bag. Resume takes longer, and Hibernate is not offered on every PC.

Check lid and power-button actions
Configure lid-close and power-button behavior according to the device documentation and your Windows power options. A 2-in-1 that is folded into tablet mode or placed in a case can remain active if its sleep action is not configured as expected. Test the behavior once before relying on it during travel.
| Situation | Recommended state | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Pause of a few minutes | Sleep | Very low use and fast return |
| Long break with no charger | Hibernate, if available | Lower idle consumption than Sleep |
| Carrying the device in a bag | Hibernate or shut down | Reduces the chance of heat and accidental wake-ups |
| Active collaboration or presentation | Stay awake; extend the temporary timeout | Prevents an unintended screen-off or resume |
Battery profiles for common 2-in-1 scenarios
| Scenario | Power mode | Display choices | Other changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long writing or browsing session | Best power efficiency | Comfortably low brightness, lower or Dynamic refresh rate, short idle timers | Energy saver on; ordinary apps set to Power saving graphics |
| Pen notes or drawing | Best power efficiency unless the app needs more GPU power | Use the lowest brightness that preserves pen visibility; raise refresh rate only if ink smoothness matters | Keep the drawing app on the performance option if strokes lag |
| Video or HDR viewing | Balanced if playback stutters in the efficiency mode | Use the brightness and refresh rate the content requires; allow HDR only when its visual benefit matters | Set a longer screen timeout for the viewing session |
| Gaming or creative production | Best performance while plugged in; switch back on battery when finished | Higher refresh rate or HDR only when needed | Assign the specific app to higher-performance graphics |
| Travel or storage | Best power efficiency | Screen off quickly | Energy saver enabled; Hibernate for a long stop when supported |
These are starting profiles, not promises of a particular runtime. A processor-intensive task can dominate consumption even after every display setting is optimized, while a mostly idle reading session may benefit more from timeout and brightness changes.

Power mode or Energy saver does not appear
Check whether the computer is running a manufacturer-specific power plan and use Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options to select Balanced. Hardware and manufacturer configuration determine which Power mode choices are exposed. Energy saver controls can also vary by Windows release.
Dynamic refresh rate or adaptive brightness is missing
Those controls require compatible hardware, firmware, and drivers. Use a lower fixed refresh rate or manual brightness instead. External displays may not expose the same controls as the built-in panel.

Hibernate is not listed
Hibernate is not available on every PC. Use Sleep for short absences and follow the device’s documentation for supported lid and power-button actions. Do not assume that closing the lid has placed the computer in the lowest-power state until you have tested it.
How to balance runtime against responsiveness
Use the following decision rules when a battery-saving change creates an unwanted side effect:
- The interface feels slow: move from Best power efficiency to Balanced before changing display settings, or assign only the affected app to Power saving or higher-performance graphics as appropriate.
- Scrolling or inking feels less fluid: raise the refresh rate for that session, then return to a lower rate for ordinary work.
- The screen is hard to read: increase brightness only to a comfortable level; do not compensate for an overly dim screen by leaving HDR enabled unnecessarily.
- HDR content looks wrong: allow HDR temporarily and accept its battery cost, then restore the battery restriction afterward.
- The device wakes too often: use Hibernate for longer breaks when supported and verify lid and power-button actions.
- Notifications arrive late: restore background activity for the app that needs timely synchronization instead of disabling all background work.
This approach keeps the battery profile conservative for routine work while making exceptions explicit for the task that needs them.

What battery life should you expect?
Microsoft does not publish a universal hours figure or percentage gain for this collection of settings. The result varies with battery size and condition, processor load, display technology, brightness, refresh rate, HDR use, wireless activity, firmware, Windows release, and the applications running at the time.
Compare changes under similar conditions: use the same brightness, workload, network state, and approximate starting charge. A short video call, a high-refresh pen session, and an idle document window exercise very different components, so their battery behavior should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.
For most 2-in-1 owners, the durable setup is Best power efficiency plus Energy saver, a comfortable low brightness, short on-battery timeouts, a lower or dynamic refresh rate, Power saving graphics for ordinary apps, and HDR restricted on battery. Sleep handles brief pauses; Hibernate is the lower-consumption choice for longer ones when the hardware supports it.
