Microsoft PowerToys Run is the best overall replacement for Win+R on Windows. It is free, open source, activated by Alt+Space by default, and searches applications, files, folders, processes, settings and system commands from one keyboard prompt.
Choose Flow Launcher when plugins and customization matter most, Listary when your work is centered on File Explorer and Open/Save dialogs, or Wox v2 when one launcher must work across Windows, macOS and Linux. Raycast for Windows is worth watching, but the latest cited report (September 17, 2025) described it as a beta distributed through an invitation waitlist, so it is not a dependable primary recommendation until access is confirmed.
Quick comparison
| Launcher | Best for | App and keyboard workflow | Files and folders | Plugins and commands | Explorer or Open/Save integration | Operating systems | Indexing and availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PowerToys Run | Most Windows users | Press Alt+Space, type, and press Enter |
Applications, files and folders | Broad built-in modules for processes, shell, calculator, settings, services, windows, conversions and more | Not specifically documented as a deep Explorer or dialog integration | Windows | Free and open source; PowerToys must be running and Run must be enabled |
| Flow Launcher | Plugin breadth and visual or shortcut customization | Keyboard-driven application and command search | Files and folders through Windows Search or Everything | Built-in and community plugins, command prefixes, calculator, web search, shell commands, settings and browser bookmarks | Not its defining feature | Windows | Free and open source; uses Windows Search or Everything rather than its own index |
| Listary | File-heavy workflows | Launches apps and commands from its search interface | Searches directly in Explorer and Open/Save dialogs | Custom commands and actions plus keyword web searches | Its main differentiator | Windows | Distribution is available through WinGet and the vendor download; licensing details are not stated in the cited material |

| Raycast for Windows | Users already invested in its workflow who can obtain access | Keyboard launcher for apps, documents and files | App, document and file search | Clipboard history, calculator, snippets, window management, extensions and AI features | Not presented as a specialized Explorer or dialog layer | Windows beta | The September 17, 2025 report described invitation-only availability; check access before depending on it |
What an app launcher does that Win+R does not
The Run dialog is a small command box. It is excellent for a known executable, folder path, URL or Windows command, but it does not provide a unified search experience for your installed software, indexed files, clipboard history, plugins or custom actions. A launcher keeps the same keyboard-first habit while adding discovery: you can type part of an application name instead of remembering its executable, search a folder without navigating to it, or hand a query to a calculator, web-search or shell plugin.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The right replacement depends on where your work happens. A general-purpose launcher should open programs quickly and expose useful Windows commands. A file-centered tool should search locations you already have open and work inside file dialogs. A plugin-oriented tool should let you add actions without changing applications. A cross-platform tool should preserve similar habits on each operating system. Those are different priorities, so “best” is a workflow decision rather than a single speed ranking; the supplied sources provide no independent launch-time, memory-use or adoption benchmarks.

PowerToys Run: the best general Windows replacement
Microsoft describes PowerToys Run as “a quick launcher for Windows power users that provides instant access to applications, files, calculator functions, and system commands without sacrificing performance.” It is free, open source and modular, with a broad set of built-in capabilities. For a Windows-only user who wants one documented tool instead of a collection of separate utilities, it is the safest default.
What it can launch and search
- Installed applications, files and folders.
- Running processes and open windows, including window-walker functions.
- Shell commands and other system commands.
- Calculator expressions, unit conversions, time and date lookups, hashes and GUIDs.
- Windows settings, services and settings-search functions.
The modular design means these functions appear as launcher results rather than requiring separate dialogs. Plugin and shortcut settings can be changed, so the default behavior is not permanent.
Set it up
- Install and start Microsoft PowerToys.
- Open the PowerToys settings window and select the PowerToys Run section.
- Turn on the Run module if it is disabled. PowerToys must remain running in the background for the launcher to respond.
- Confirm the activation shortcut. The default is
Alt+Space; change it if another application already owns that combination. - Press
Alt+Space, type an application name, path, calculation or command, then select the result with the arrow keys and press Enter.
Where it fits—and where it does not
PowerToys Run is strongest when your main goal is replacing Win+R with a broader Windows command and application prompt. It has many built-in modules, so you can start productively without assembling a plugin stack. The trade-off is that the cited documentation does not identify the deep File Explorer and Open/Save-dialog behavior that defines Listary, and it is Windows-only. If you regularly move between macOS or Linux, Wox v2 is the more coherent long-term choice.

Flow Launcher: the customization and plugin choice
Flow Launcher is a free, open-source Windows launcher aimed at keyboard-driven users. It launches installed applications, finds files and folders, runs system commands, searches settings and exposes calculator, web-search, shell-command and browser-bookmark plugins. Its plugin store, appearance controls and shortcut customization make it the better fit when the launcher itself is something you want to tune.

- 【Replaceable Switches】Supports any Hall magnetic Switches, with a simple click for calibration.

- 【Custom Screen】The first line of text on the screen can be customized, such as writing your own ID.

How its indexing model affects results
Flow Launcher does not provide its own independent file index in the cited description. It can use the Windows Search indexer or integrate with Everything. That choice matters: file-result coverage and update behavior follow the index you select. If a file is absent from the selected index, changing Flow Launcher’s theme or shortcut will not make it appear; review the indexing source and its included locations first.
Use it as a daily launcher
- Install Flow Launcher and start it.
- Choose a keyboard shortcut that does not conflict with another global hotkey.
- In its settings, select the available file-search provider—Windows Search or Everything—according to the index you maintain.
- Open the plugin store and enable only the plugins you expect to use, such as calculator, web search, shell commands or browser bookmarks.
- Use the launcher prefix or search syntax shown by each plugin, then press Enter to run the selected action.
Flow Launcher is a strong alternative if you want a launcher that can grow with your workflow. The cost of that flexibility is maintenance: plugin availability, prefixes and results depend on the providers you enable, and file searches depend on an external index.
Listary: the best choice for Explorer and file dialogs
Listary’s defining advantage is not simply opening applications; it places search where file work already happens. In File Explorer and in Open or Save dialogs, you can type to find files and folders directly instead of navigating a separate launcher and then returning to the dialog. It also launches applications, runs system commands, supports keyword web searches and allows custom commands and actions.
Why its integration changes the workflow
Suppose an editor’s Open dialog is already on screen and the needed document is several folders deep. A conventional launcher may find the document, but you still have to switch back and select it. Listary’s dialog integration is designed for that exact moment: search from the location where the file must be chosen. The same principle applies when browsing a project in Explorer and jumping to another folder or file without leaving the window.

Install and configure
- Install Listary through WinGet or the vendor’s download package.
- Start it and allow its Explorer and file-dialog integration to remain available while you work.
- In Explorer, type a distinctive part of a file or folder name and select the matching result.
- Repeat the search inside an Open or Save dialog when you need to attach or save a file.
- Add custom commands or keyword web searches only after the basic file workflow is reliable; this keeps ambiguous search terms from producing unexpected actions.
Choose Listary when your bottleneck is locating and selecting files, not when you primarily want calculator functions, service controls or a large built-in command catalog. The cited material does not establish a cross-platform edition or a specific licensing model, so treat it as a Windows-focused option.
Wox v2: the cross-platform launcher
Wox v2 is the clearest fit when the same launcher concept must span Windows, macOS and Linux. Its comparison page describes stable 2026 releases and distinguishes v2 from the older Windows codebase associated with Flow Launcher. The Wox feature list covers application launching, window switching, local file search, clipboard recall, calculator and conversion, web search, folders, URLs, notes, screenshots, timers, dictation, window layouts, bookmarks, shell and system commands, themes, plugin management, hotkeys and cloud sync.
What “cross-platform” changes
A cross-platform launcher is valuable when you move between a Windows workstation and another operating system and want to retain the same mental model: invoke a hotkey, type a short query, choose an action. It does not make every underlying command portable. A Windows system command or shell action still depends on the operating system, and plugin support can differ by platform. Use Wox for a consistent launcher surface, while treating OS-specific actions as separate capabilities.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Build a practical Wox setup
- Install the Wox v2 release for each operating system you use.
- Choose a hotkey that is available on that platform and reserve it for the launcher.
- Enable application launching and local file indexing first.
- Add clipboard history, calculator, converter or web-search features as needed.
- Install plugins from the store for specialized actions, and keep the plugin set small enough that search results remain predictable.
- Use themes and cloud-sync options only after verifying that the resulting settings match your privacy and account requirements.
Wox v2 is the most future-proof choice for a mixed-OS household or development environment. For a Windows-only computer, PowerToys Run or Flow Launcher may provide a more natural fit with Windows-specific commands and indexing choices.

Raycast for Windows: promising, but verify access first
Raycast’s Windows feature set is described as including application, document and file search, clipboard history, calculator, snippets, window management, extensions and AI features. That combination makes it attractive to users who want a polished command center rather than a minimal Run replacement.
Availability is the decisive limitation. A Windows Central report dated September 17, 2025 described the Windows build as beta and accessible through an invitation waitlist. Because beta access can change, check the current invitation and installation status before designing your workflow around it. If you cannot obtain access, select one of the generally available launchers above instead of leaving your daily workflow dependent on an unavailable tool.

Launch speed and keyboard flow
All five options are designed around a keyboard prompt, but only PowerToys Run has a documented default shortcut in the cited material: Alt+Space. Flow Launcher, Wox v2 and Raycast provide configurable hotkeys, while Listary’s value is the ability to search from Explorer and file dialogs as well as from its launcher. No source supplies a controlled speed benchmark, so choose based on how few context switches your work requires rather than on an unverified claim that one is universally faster.
Files, folders and indexing
- PowerToys Run: searches files and folders as part of its built-in launcher capabilities.
- Flow Launcher: relies on Windows Search or Everything; the selected index determines what appears.
- Listary: searches directly in Explorer and Open/Save dialogs, which is especially useful for active file operations.
- Wox v2: provides local file search and indexing across its supported operating systems.
- Raycast for Windows: includes document and file search, subject to the beta’s actual availability and implementation.
Plugins, commands and automation
PowerToys Run offers a wide built-in set of modules, including shell, process, service, settings, calculator, conversion and window functions. Flow Launcher emphasizes a plugin store, command prefixes and community extensions. Wox v2 combines plugins with clipboard, notes, timers, screenshots, dictation and window-layout functions. Listary focuses on custom commands and actions alongside keyword web searches. Raycast’s cited Windows feature list includes extensions, snippets and window management, but access remains the gating factor.

Operating-system coverage
| Need | Best fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Windows only, broad built-in features | PowerToys Run | Documented Windows launcher with many built-in modules and a free, open-source distribution |
| Windows only, extensive plugins and visual tuning | Flow Launcher | Plugin store, community plugins, command prefixes and appearance or shortcut customization |
| Windows file operations | Listary | Direct Explorer and Open/Save-dialog search |

How to choose in five minutes
- Start with your operating systems. If you need Windows, macOS and Linux support, choose Wox v2. If you use only Windows, continue.
- Identify your most common object. For applications, commands and calculations, choose PowerToys Run. For files selected from Explorer or Open/Save dialogs, choose Listary.
- Decide whether indexing control matters. If you already maintain Everything or carefully manage Windows Search, Flow Launcher can make that index the center of your workflow. If you prefer built-in modules without selecting a separate provider, PowerToys Run is simpler.
- Estimate your customization appetite. Pick Flow Launcher or Wox v2 when plugins, themes and custom hotkeys are central. Pick PowerToys Run when you want useful functions with less assembly.
- Check availability before committing. Raycast for Windows should be treated as an optional beta experiment until an invitation and current installation path are confirmed.
Replacing Win+R without losing the old workflow
You do not have to abandon the commands you already know. Keep using familiar executable names, folder paths, URLs and Windows commands inside the new launcher. The change is that the same prompt can also discover an application by name, calculate a value, search a file index or invoke a plugin.
For the smoothest transition, assign one memorable hotkey, practice the same three actions you used most often in Run, and then add one new capability at a time. For PowerToys Run, that means starting with Alt+Space, application names and paths before exploring services, settings or conversions. For Flow Launcher and Wox, add plugins only when a repeated task justifies them. For Listary, practice searching from Explorer and an Open dialog so the integration becomes automatic rather than another window to remember.
Troubleshooting common launcher problems
The launcher does not open
- For PowerToys Run, verify that PowerToys is running in the background and that the Run module is enabled.
- Check whether another application has claimed the hotkey. Assign a different shortcut in the launcher’s settings.
- If the launcher starts with Windows but is unavailable later, confirm that its background process has not been closed.
An application does not appear
- Try the full application name and a distinctive fragment rather than an abbreviation.
- For Flow Launcher, inspect the selected Windows Search or Everything index and whether the application or location is included.
- For Listary, test the search in the specific Explorer or Open/Save dialog where the item should be visible.
- For Wox or Raycast, verify that the relevant file or application-search feature is enabled and that the item is indexed or discoverable on that operating system.
Results are too broad or actions are ambiguous
Use the documented command prefix for the relevant Flow Launcher or Wox plugin, narrow the query with a folder or file extension, and disable plugins you never use. A smaller result set is usually more valuable than installing every available extension.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A plugin or extension is missing
Open the launcher’s plugin management or store, confirm that the extension is installed and enabled, and check the syntax or prefix it expects. If the feature is essential and the extension is unavailable on your operating system, use a built-in command or select a launcher whose documented capabilities include that function.
Raycast access is unavailable
Do not treat the waitlist as an installation error. The cited September 17, 2025 report described the Windows release as invitation-only beta access. Use PowerToys Run, Flow Launcher, Listary or Wox v2 immediately, and revisit Raycast only after current access is confirmed.
Quick Recap
Final recommendation by workflow
- Most people replacing Win+R on Windows: PowerToys Run.
- Power users who want a plugin ecosystem and extensive visual or shortcut control: Flow Launcher.
- Anyone who spends the day locating files in Explorer or Open/Save dialogs: Listary.
- People who need one launcher on Windows, macOS and Linux: Wox v2.
- Users interested in Raycast’s Windows feature set: verify beta invitation access first; do not make it your only launcher until it is generally obtainable.
