The best starting setup is deliberately simple: select the soundbar under Output, select the detachable microphone under Input, test the microphone in Windows and then in your game or chat app. Leave enhancements and spatial processing off until basic playback and voice capture are clean. Processing is device-dependent, and there is no single setting that is best for every soundbar, microphone, connection or game.
Set the soundbar and microphone separately
Windows treats playback and recording as different choices. Making the soundbar your output device does not automatically make the detachable microphone your chat input. Configure both in Windows 11 before changing tone, enhancement or spatial-audio options.
1. Connect and power both devices
- Connect the soundbar to the PC or its wireless receiver and turn it on.
- Connect the detachable microphone, attach it securely and check its physical mute switch.
- Wait a few seconds for Windows to enumerate the devices.
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
If a device never appears, reseat the cable or receiver, try the device’s other supported port, check its power and confirm that any hardware mute control is not engaged. A missing device cannot be fixed by an enhancement or spatial-sound setting.
2. Choose the soundbar under Output
In Settings > System > Sound, find Output and select the soundbar by name. You can also open the taskbar’s sound selector and choose the preferred playback device there. Play a familiar system sound or a short game clip to confirm that audio comes from the bar rather than the monitor, laptop speakers or another headset.

For a quiet or apparently silent bar, open Volume mixer from the Sound page. Check the master level, the individual application level and mute controls. Also verify the soundbar’s own volume, input selection and physical connection. Windows can show a selected device even when the bar is switched to a different hardware input.
3. Choose and test the detachable microphone under Input
Still in Settings > System > Sound, go to Input and select the detachable microphone. Open its properties and use Start test. Speak at your normal gaming distance, choose Stop test, then play the recorded sample. This reveals whether Windows is receiving your voice before a game adds its own voice-activation, gain or noise filters.
Use the microphone’s Input volume control only after listening to the sample. Raise it if normal speech is barely audible; lower it if ordinary speech is heavily distorted. Recheck the microphone’s mute switch and connector if the test is silent. A clean Windows sample is the reference point for later app troubleshooting.
4. Test in the actual game or chat application
Open the game’s audio or voice-chat settings and explicitly select the detachable microphone as the input. Select the soundbar as output if the application has its own playback selector. Speak while watching the app’s input meter or local test feature.
If Windows records the microphone but the app does not, check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Microphone access, access for apps and access for desktop applications must be enabled as applicable to the game or chat client. Then restart the app so it re-enumerates the device. Do not assume that changing the Windows default is enough for an application that stores its own device choice.

Establish clean levels before adding processing
Processing cannot repair a disconnected cable, a muted device or an application pointed at the wrong endpoint. Use this order whenever you change hardware or switch games:
- Confirm the soundbar is the Windows Output device.
- Confirm the detachable microphone is the Windows Input device.
- Play a known sound and check Windows and application levels in Volume mixer.
- Run the Windows microphone test and listen to its sample.
- Run the game’s or chat app’s own input test.
- Only then compare enhancements or spatial sound.
Keep the same speaking distance and the same game scene while comparing settings. Otherwise, a change in your voice position, game mix or application volume can look like an improvement when it is only a level difference.

Enhancements: use them as a troubleshooting choice, not a rule
Windows audio enhancements can alter loudness, equalization, noise handling or other processing, and some devices behave poorly with them. Distortion, crackling, pumping volume, unexpected quietness or a metallic microphone are reasons to test with enhancements disabled. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance treats disabling enhancements as a diagnostic step; it does not establish that every device should permanently run with them off.
How to compare enhancements
- In Settings > System > Sound, open the selected soundbar’s properties.
- Find the device’s Audio enhancements control and choose the off or disabled option when available.
- Play the same game scene or test recording at the same Windows and application volume.
- Listen for clear dialogue, stable levels, crackle and unwanted pumping.
- Restore the previous state and make the same comparison with enhancements enabled.
Keep the state that is clean and intelligible on your hardware. If the control is missing, the driver or device may expose processing elsewhere, such as its own utility or firmware; do not substitute a random Windows control and assume it is equivalent.
| Enhancements off | Enhancements on |
|---|---|
| Best first diagnostic state when sound is distorted, crackling or unexpectedly quiet. | Worth testing if the unprocessed signal is harsh, uneven or difficult to understand and the device provides a known, usable enhancement. |
| Usually gives you a neutral baseline for comparing the soundbar and microphone. | May change tonal balance or level; judge it with the same material and volume rather than by a louder result alone. |
| Does not guarantee ideal sound on every model. | Does not guarantee better quality and can introduce artifacts on some combinations. |
Spatial sound: an optional listening test
Windows exposes spatial-audio choices for a selected playback device. Microsoft specifically documents Windows Sonic for Headphones, so its name and guidance are headphone-oriented. A soundbar can produce a result that differs from headphones because speaker placement, room reflections and the bar’s own processing affect the final image.

Additional choices may include Dolby Access and DTS Sound Unbound when their software and licensing are installed. Their presence does not prove that a particular game or soundbar will benefit. Some games already apply their own surround or binaural mix, so stacking processing can reduce positional clarity.

- Keep the same game, scene, master volume and soundbar mode.
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the soundbar.
- Open the spatial-sound control and note the current off state.
- Listen with spatial sound off for footsteps, dialogue, music and effects.
- Enable one available mode, return to the identical scene and listen again.
- Keep the mode only if location cues and speech are clearer without distortion, echo or unstable volume.
If the soundbar sounds hollow, voices become difficult to locate or the level changes, return to spatial sound off. “On” is not inherently better, and a headphone-labelled mode should not be treated as a guaranteed soundbar recommendation.
Bluetooth soundbars: settings and failure modes
For a Bluetooth bar, first confirm that the bar is the selected device under Output. If it is paired but absent from the list, disconnect it from another host, put it back into pairing mode if required by its instructions and restart Bluetooth before repeating the selection.
Use the two-channel format as a diagnostic option
Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance includes trying a two-channel, 16-bit, 48 kHz format. Treat that value as a diagnostic setting, not a guaranteed optimum for every Bluetooth product. If changing to it restores stable playback, keep it while you test the game and microphone; if it makes no difference, return to the format that the device exposes and handles reliably.
Format controls are found by opening the selected Bluetooth device’s properties from the Sound page. The exact label can vary with Windows and the manufacturer’s driver. Do not apply this Bluetooth procedure to a wired, USB or non-Bluetooth connection as if it were relevant.

Why Bluetooth can become mono when the microphone is active
Bluetooth must carry both game audio to the soundbar and microphone audio back to the PC. Stereo playback while the microphone is active is conditional for Bluetooth LE Audio; it is not a general promise for every Bluetooth connection.
| Requirement or condition | What it means |
|---|---|
| Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer | The stereo-while-microphone capability described by Microsoft requires this version or later. |
| Factory-integrated PC LE Audio support | The PC’s Bluetooth hardware must support LE Audio; a later software update alone does not guarantee it. |
| Suitable manufacturer drivers | Drivers must expose the required LE Audio behavior to Windows. |
| Compatible LE Audio peripheral | The soundbar or microphone-side accessory must support the matching LE Audio feature. |
| Format when microphone is active control | If Windows does not show this control, Microsoft says the system does not support the stereo feature; audio may remain mono when the microphone is in use. |
When the compatible control is present, compare stereo and mono during an active microphone session. Prefer stereo if it remains stable and intelligible. If stereo glitches, drops audio or causes the bar to disconnect, select mono as the recovery choice; reliable chat and game sound are more useful than a nominal channel count that fails in play.
These LE Audio requirements do not apply to wired or USB microphones and should not be generalized to ordinary Bluetooth implementations that do not expose the relevant control.
Game and chat settings that commonly override Windows
Many games and chat clients remember a device by name instead of following the Windows default continuously. After changing hardware, visit each application’s audio page and verify both selectors:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Output device: the gaming soundbar, not a monitor, controller or previously used headset.
- Input device: the detachable microphone, not a webcam or laptop microphone.
- Input mode: push-to-talk or voice activation as intended.
- Input level: high enough for normal speech but not clipping when you speak loudly.
Use the app’s local test, if available, while leaving the Windows microphone test sample unchanged. If the app offers separate game and chat output sliders, set them after the device selectors are correct; otherwise you can mistake a chat-balance setting for a hardware problem.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Checks in order |
|---|---|
| No sound from the bar | Check Windows Output, the bar’s power and input, Windows and app mute states, Volume mixer, and the physical or wireless connection. |
| Sound comes from the wrong speaker | Re-select the bar in the taskbar sound selector and in the game’s own output setting; close and reopen the app if it cached the old device. |
| Windows cannot hear the detachable mic | Choose it under Input, check its hardware mute, reseat the connection, run Start test and adjust Input volume only after confirming a signal. |
| Windows hears the mic but the game does not | Enable microphone access under Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone, select the mic inside the app and restart the app. |
| Crackling or distorted playback | Turn enhancements off as a test, check levels for clipping, confirm the physical connection, then compare spatial sound off before trying another mode. |
| Bluetooth sound turns mono when speaking | Check whether the connection is LE Audio, whether Windows is 24H2 or newer, whether the PC and peripheral support LE Audio, and whether Format when microphone is active exists. If stereo is available but unstable, use mono. |
| Bluetooth audio is intermittent | Confirm the bar is the selected output, remove competing Bluetooth connections, try the two-channel 16-bit 48 kHz diagnostic format and test with enhancements and spatial sound off. |
| Voice is too quiet or too loud | Play the Windows test sample, adjust the microphone’s input volume, then check the game’s input gain and voice-activation threshold separately. |
A repeatable test routine after updates or hardware changes
Use this short routine whenever Windows, a Bluetooth driver, a game or the soundbar firmware changes:
- Restart the PC and power-cycle the soundbar and detachable microphone.
- Open Settings > System > Sound and select the soundbar under Output.
- Select the detachable microphone under Input and record a Windows Start test sample.
- Set enhancements off and spatial sound off for the baseline.
- Play the same game scene and verify game output and chat input independently.
- If Bluetooth is involved, test playback with the microphone inactive and active; note whether the channel mode changes.
- Change one option at a time, repeat the same scene and keep only changes that improve intelligibility or stability.
Changing one variable prevents a new driver, a louder volume and a spatial mode from being credited for the same result. Keep a note of the working output, input and Bluetooth mode so you can restore them quickly after an update.
Recommended starting profiles by connection
| Setup | Starting configuration | What to test next |
|---|---|---|
| Wired soundbar with detachable mic | Soundbar as Windows output, mic as Windows input, enhancements off, spatial sound off. | Compare enhancements and any spatial mode only after Windows and the game pass their input/output tests. |
| USB soundbar or USB audio interface with mic | Select the soundbar or interface output and detachable mic input explicitly; verify each in its own properties. | Check application-specific selectors after every reconnect because some apps retain an older USB endpoint. |
| Standard Bluetooth soundbar with separate wired or USB mic | Soundbar as output and the separate mic as input; use enhancements and spatial sound only as controlled tests. | If Bluetooth playback is unstable, try the two-channel 16-bit 48 kHz diagnostic format. |
| Bluetooth LE Audio soundbar with microphone over the same Bluetooth system | Confirm Windows 11 24H2 or newer, PC and peripheral LE Audio support, and the active-microphone format control. | Compare stereo and mono while speaking; select mono when stereo glitches or loses audio. |
The profiles are starting points, not claims that one mode sounds best on every model. Your room, bar placement, game mix and device firmware can change the result.

When replacing the microphone is reasonable
Consider a replacement only after Windows can see the current microphone, the Windows test is silent or unusable, and the target game has been checked for privacy and input-device selection. A generic USB gaming microphone can be easier to select and test because Windows exposes connected microphones as input devices, but compatibility still depends on the PC’s available ports, the soundbar arrangement and the applications you use. Confirm those details before buying rather than assuming any USB model will solve an application-specific configuration problem.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- The soundbar is selected under Output in Windows and, where available, in the game.
- The detachable microphone is selected under Input and passes the Windows recorded-sample test.
- Windows microphone privacy access is enabled when an app cannot see a working microphone.
- Windows and application levels are checked before changing processing.
- Enhancements are off for troubleshooting distorted, crackling or unexpectedly quiet sound.
- Spatial sound is treated as an optional comparison; Windows Sonic is documented as headphone-oriented.
- Bluetooth troubleshooting uses the two-channel 16-bit 48 kHz format only as a diagnostic option.
- Bluetooth LE Audio stereo during microphone use is attempted only when the Windows version, PC, drivers, peripheral and format control support it.
- Mono is chosen when Bluetooth stereo becomes unstable during active microphone use.
