There is no single best wide-angle lens for every Sony camera. Start by matching the lens mount and sensor format, then choose between an ultra-wide APS-C zoom, a full-frame zoom, or a fixed-focal-length prime. For a powered 16–35mm full-frame zoom, consider Sony’s FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G; for a brighter 16–35mm range, the FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM trades added weight for its wider maximum aperture. APS-C owners looking for an ultra-wide zoom can consider Tamron’s 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD.
Check your Sony camera’s mount and sensor format first
Sony identifies E-mount as its lens system for APS-C and full-frame E-mount cameras. That does not mean every lens has the same field of view on every body: Sony says a full-frame lens used on an APS-C body has a narrower angle of view than it does on a full-frame camera. Confirm compatibility for your particular camera and lens using Sony’s compatibility guidance before buying.
Then decide which format you are shopping for. The candidates below are explicitly labeled: the Tamron 11-20mm is an APS-C lens, while the Sony FE and the cited Sigma and Tamron 17-28mm options are full-frame lenses. A full-frame lens may be used on an APS-C E-mount body where compatible, but its framing will be narrower than on full frame; do not compare focal-length ranges as though the angle of view were identical across formats.

For a full-frame zoom with powered operation
The Sony FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G covers a useful 16–35mm range and has a powered zoom, which can be relevant when smooth zoom operation matters. Sony lists its weight as 353 g. Sony calls it “the world’s lightest full frame F4 wide-angle power-zoom lens,” but that is Sony’s claim based on a March 2022 survey of constant-F4 wide-angle zoom lenses for 35mm full-frame sensors—not a current, independent ranking of every lens on the market.
For a full-frame 16–35mm zoom with a wider maximum aperture
The FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM covers the same nominal full-frame range as the F4 G and has a maximum aperture of F2.8 rather than F4. Sony lists it at 680 g, compared with 353 g for the powered F4 G. This is a clear aperture-versus-weight trade-off; the specifications alone do not establish which lens will produce better results for your work.

For an APS-C ultra-wide zoom
Tamron’s 11-20mm F/2.8 Di III-A RXD is explicitly an APS-C Sony E-mount lens. Tamron lists F2.8, a weight of 335 g, and a 67 mm filter size. Its 11mm wide end makes it a format-specific option to evaluate for APS-C framing; do not treat its range as directly equivalent to a full-frame 11–20mm view.

For a compact full-frame prime
The Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G is a fixed-focal-length full-frame E-mount prime. Its F1.8 maximum aperture and lack of zoom make it a different choice from the 16–35mm zooms: you give up framing flexibility in exchange for a single focal length and a wider maximum aperture. Sony’s wide-angle guidance highlights it for landscapes, night scenes, and starry skies, and notes quiet autofocus and close-up capability for video. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative tests.

For a third-party full-frame F2.8 zoom
The Sigma 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is listed at 450 g in Sigma’s March 2026 catalogue. Tamron’s 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD is a Sony E-mount full-frame option listed at 420 g by Tamron. Their ranges are shorter than 16–35mm, and their stated weights are product specifications, not evidence of image-quality or autofocus rankings. Check whether either model is currently sold in your region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use wide angles deliberately
Sony’s wide-angle photography guide describes wide lenses as useful for expansive landscapes and starry skies. A wide field of view can also emphasize depth and perspective: a narrow room may look more spacious, while a tall building can appear taller. That effect can help communicate scale, but it also makes composition less forgiving. Check the edges of the frame for distracting objects and decide deliberately what belongs in the image.

A practical decision checklist
- Confirm the camera and lens mount. Check the exact body-and-lens compatibility information rather than relying on a general mount label.
- Identify sensor format. Choose APS-C or full-frame framing intentionally; a full-frame lens on APS-C gives a narrower angle of view than it does on full frame.
- Set the widest view you need. Compare the lenses’ wide ends only with format in mind, then consider whether the rest of the zoom range is useful for your subjects.
- Decide how much aperture matters. F2.8 or F1.8 provides a wider maximum aperture than F4, but the cited candidates differ in focal range, form, and weight as well.
- Choose zoom or prime. A zoom changes framing without changing lenses; the FE 20mm F1.8 G is fixed at 20mm.
- Account for weight and operation. The listed weights range from 335 g for the APS-C Tamron 11-20mm to 680 g for the Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM. The Sony FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G is the powered-zoom option among these candidates.
